It took immense willpower from Brad to abstain from Joy for the sake of his friends and his daughter, he suffers from horrible withdrawals and hallucinations because of it, and the people who he does it for... Doesn't give a shit.

"No, I swear, I quit, you have to belive me"

That's the way people are, sadly. No one ever sees you, they only see the image of you they made in their heads. And for a lot of people, probably the majority of people, that means firmly believing you're still making the same mistakes. Sometimes years after you've changed, they'll still see you that way. They don't know you changed, they didn't see any change. Because they weren't there to see anything, so they just fixate on who you were when they knew you and believe you never changed.

I think the coolest thing about this that it makes you think: If nothing in the story changes, then what is the point of not taking joy? Just take the thing for it's benefits, right? But that's where the beauty is, since it means Brad tried, knowing it likely wouldn't change anything at all, except making his life substantially harder, which shows how good of a person he really became through his efforts. He did this solely to become a better person, EVEN IF the world wasn't gonna reward him for it, ever. That's just fucking badass.

In the game, you get Ajeet Mandeep as a reward. In a way, this does alludes to real life: if you have a principle and you stuck by it in spite of your temptations and the world not acknowledging and if anything demonizing you, but in the end you managed to pull through, there will be people who with resonant virtue who are willing to stand up for what they believe is right.

Thats also what makes Disco Elysium so special as well. The short-term drawbacks of drug use are *vastly* offset by the benefits, and theres no real change to anything to the story if you do choose to use them.
However, you still have the choice to never take drugs despite the benefits, even outright refusing to indulge the urges in your head. You can even unlock a perk that all it really does is cause drugs to no longer even *give* a positive effect. The only difference is right at the end where you can proudly state you stayed clean during the whole investigation, but even that doesn't change much beyond a personal sense of accomplishment.
Its things like that that so many so-called RPGs miss nowadays. Sometimes the *point* of something is to play a role. And if you decide you want to see this broken man try to put himself back together and go clean despite the drawbacks it would give you, then you can

Gotta feel bad for Brad. Man does everything in his power to vlean up his act and stop taking joy, yet in the end he still remains a monster to everyone he crosses paths with and his prior failings villainize him in the eyes of the few people he could confide in, with even Buddy dehumanizing both herself and him and distancing herself from Brad just to feel some semblance of freedom and control.
It's a tragically futile effort to stop embracing the joy, yet one that's worth pursuing nonetheless just so Brad can go out with one good notch on his belt.

There's a little story I have with this: once I played this game, I already knew taking Joy at any point in the game changes ending (or maybe achievements spoiled it for me, not really relevant) and deliberately abstained from using it to see it. Didn't really think this would change some dialogues, only learned it now, man, what a breakthrough that game was back in the day.
There's more to it, though. As I got stuck on Hallucination of Sticky, no other moves worked, so, after 5+ tries (and sloooow moving through cutscenes before the fight) I decided to Joy Brad, to see if it would affect things that much.
I got Buzzo dialogue about taking Joy without Brad telling him that he quit AND I got the dialogue after the epilogue (and the achievement, to boot) of the Joyless ending somehow. Maybe a missed moment, or maybe using Joy in a hallucination doesn't count, except for the fact that Brad realises that, were things to be more desperate, he would fall for it easily, and doesn't try to deny Buzzo because of it. Such a gem of a detail, really.

Memes aside, I like this kind of "all roads lead to one end" storyline. In the end, it doesn't really matter if Brad took the joy or not. He'll lose some potential allies, he'll have slightly different conversations, sure, but he'll become a mutant anyway. By not taking joy, however, no matter how hard it gets, no matter how alluring it may be, he's fighting it. Him resisting the addiction, doing his best to be better than what people say about him, is worth more than just taking the easy way out. He may have been doomed, but he at least tried.

In a typical Telltale game, none of your choices really affect the ultimate ending that much. "All roads lead to one end" as you said. There's lots of "He'll lose some potential allies, he'll have slightly different conversations" too.
The choices you make mostly only affect how the central NPCs perceive your character, or even how the player character perceives themselves. But the end is usually pre-determined, although it's always built-up and doesn't come from nowhere (even if you hope otherwise). But as you said again, who your character chooses to be in their linear journey is what makes the games great.
Unfortunately, Telltale Games markets and introduces their games that choices DO affect the story. I mean, they do, but not in any significant way. And some of their games coincided with the game 'Until Dawn', where the choices you make DO matter in how the game ends.
So there, the brief summary of Telltale Games. I like their games, especially the stories they tell, but I understand the hate that people give them for lying about the choices stuff.

I remember playing this like 6 years ago, thinking "what is the point of not taking joy if like nothing changes??? It's probably just for those masochist hardcore players."
I now realize this portrays drug addiction so damn well - so much effort, for practically no reward.
Every day feels debilitating, especially knowing there's an easy way out, but you keep on pushing.
Why? - Who knows? Maybe it's to be better, to fit into what is considered good, maybe it's for those you care about, perhaps the combination of all above - one thing remains certain, it's practically impossible staying sober every single day, yet you have to keep on pushing, and you're never 100% sure it's even worth it, but there are some things in life that don't have to be absolutely rational and justified to, you know, be worth it.
Sometimes it's just thinking about someone you care so much for, someone who cares so much about you, which makes every single day of your life, knowing you'll never ever be able to feel as good as you could, be worth it.

Ajeet's coding is fucked in such a way that he only recognizes you've taken joy if you've taken exactly two pills over the course of your playthrough. Yado was developing Joy for one of two reasons. It could either have been as a weapon, which failed to be accepted by the military. Enraged by his failure, he used Joy to control the populace of Olathe after the Flash. How much Yado had to do with the Flash itself is not ever explicitly divulged, I think.
The other possibility is that Yado was planning his own personal apocalypse from the start, and developed Joy under the guise of it being a weapon, until he was able to manufacture enough to go all out.

you know it really does suck being a drug addict, this is very realistic, the mental struggle and pain it takes to push through your addiction, and then for people to not even believe you regardless of how hard you tried, kinda makes you WANT to take drugs after that, needless to say i know some of you who are addicts trying to detox are reading this message and many of you have felt what i have felt, it hurts so much to work on improving yourself just for people to see the same trashed up you, but don't threat, they might not believe you but we fellow addicts do, don't fall back, it only gets easier overtime.

    • @brashtakks7473
      @brashtakks7473 Год назад +94

if you want to get REALLY specific info about the changes with the ending:
      - There are (3) ending dialogues you can get, they're over a black screen after brad turns to a boneless boy-wonder
      - The ONLY thing that influences these dialogues (which all have their respective achievement tied to it) is whether you used joy or not, and if you beat the game on 'Pain Mode'
      - IF you beat the game on 'Pain Mode': You will ALWAYS get the pain mode ending dialogue
      - OTHERWISE, the dialogue is based on whether or not you did joy EVEN ONCE (not counting cutscenes)
the dialogues are somewhat important to understanding the characters and story more (moreso in joyful), but joy REALLY doesn't affect a whole lot during the game which kinda blows

I refused to kill those soldiers on the mountain where the firebombs were, because I didn't have to. None of my men were kidnapped. Not on my watch. I spared my old friends even when they betrayed me. I had one arm by the end; selling all my gear beforehand and buying "midlife crisis" hats and then reselling them later. I had one last motorcycle ride by the beach. I cried when I had to kill my own men in the final battles. And I decided Brad deserved a hug.
