    As a kid we free flew flocks of 40 or so rolling pigeons. I only seen one or two pigeons get taking. They roll with clapping which was and still is beautiful. Imagine a flock of 40 beautiful birds rolling down from the sky then catching themselves. Then they also respond to specific whistles. They always flew hungry so they always came home with the feeding whistle.

    You two inspire me so much! I've learned so much from watching your videos. I've successfully target/touch trained my cage bound cockatoo (that hated everybody) while inside the cage. It took months before he would even come out (I've had him less than a year). Now I can target him outside onto a perch and back inside or wherever I want him to go! He gets really excited when he sees the target stick and is rarin' to go. We are still working on step ups onto me but I'm sure we will be successful. We are taking our time and I won't push him. I can't wait for the day he let's me scratch his head. Cockatoo's are SUPPOSED to get head scratches :) My rescue cockatoo and I thank you! Hugs and Coo's

    Hi Guys, I see on RUclips how one gentleman is saying a way to stop birds from screaming is to set up a strobe light (not aimed at the cage but in the same area) and when the bird screams you activate the strobe for a few seconds with a remote control so you can do it even when not in the room. He purports this works with 99% of birds. I wonder what your thoughts are on this matter? He says it just re-sets the birds brain to think of something else for a second. This being a kin to the Dog Whisperer using his foot to nudge the barking dog to break his attention cycle on what is causing them to bark. Sounds okay but you guys are the experts please tell me what is the right thing to do. Thanks!

    • @kasandramckenna6221
      @kasandramckenna6221 4 года назад

      Not an expert just a thought I had to this practice. You could be teaching the bird that if they scream they get to see the strobe which if they like it might actually teach the bird to scream. Also if you’re not home all the time you can’t use the strobe light remote and then what do you?

    Jamieleigh and Dave, I cannot begin to thank you both for all your hard work, advice and tutorials. You've helped me tremendously with my galah, Banjo. I moved from the US to Australia 7 years ago and I've always loved birds, and when I first saw a flock of galahs flying the only way that galahs can (which is crazily!) I was instantly head over heels with them. About 2 years ago I found your videos and blogs and watched and read everything I could that you had on training to better prepare myself for owning a bird. About six months after that I came across one of many local ads of someone selling a galah for $30. So we got a nice big cage and had it set up and ready and picked up Banjo. He was absolutely terrified of people and hands in particular. The girl I bought him from said that she knew she didn't have the time to put into him and he needed a better home. Because of your clicker training videos I got him to step up within 3 weeks! And off the total seed diet that he had been on and on to a much more well balanced diet. Now he dances with me in the shower and he says all sorts of things like "G'day, mate!" (my hubby taught him that one) "Banjo's a good boy, SUUUUCH a good boy!" "Joshua what are you doing?" (Josh is my son, and that's a common question in our house!) and several other things. He's also very good at waving, spinning, nodding his head yes to questions, retrieving smalls toys that I've rolled across the floor, doing the big stick 'em up, and rolling over on the carpet (though sometimes he likes to hold onto my finger before he'll roll). Several things you said in this week's video rang true for me. In particular about the free flight training. We do fly Banjo inside the house, and he does it very well. He's recently started navigating doorways and turns from room to room. I feel it's a big accomplishment since when we got him his little muscles were so atrophied that he couldn't get himself two feet off the floor. He did seem to teach himself ascending and descending though, and he does it quite effortlessly. Sometimes flying in circles in the family room he'll dip and dive and fly back up again, calling out in what I assume is just from the sheer joy of flying. I'd love to free fly him outdoors one day. My biggest concern is that he'll fly off after the flocks of native galahs that fly over all the time. (Funny...one day he was outside in his cage getting some vitamin D, and a flock of galahs flew over calling out in their typical triple yell which Banjo returned, then they called back and he responded with "Banjo's a good boy!") I've got the name and number of a well-known bird trainer when we're ready to start free-flying him, though. At the moment I know he's not ready, and neither am I! The other thing you talked about that really rang true with me was about the screaming. Sometimes Banjo will be hanging upside down and making himself swing while he's got his wings spread and he just screams his head off in what I think is just him having so much fun. I know he's having a blast and it doesn't bother me. The trouble is it bothers everyone else in the house. Apart from that I've come to understand certain calls. His "alarm" call as Jamie put it, there are a couple of different ones. If I'm in the kitchen and it's getting near dinner time, I know he's calling because he's hungry. If I'm simply out of sight, I know he's calling to make sure someone is still here and he's not alone. Banjo does scream for attention now and then, and we think we know who the culprit is. A certain family member who indulges his screaming by going over and singing and dancing for his entertainment! So we'll have to try to put a stop to that. But we've really enjoyed all your Tuesday videos (though we don't get them till Wednesday in Australia) and there's so much helpful information. Thank you both so much!!

    I took on a female ringneck 1 1/2 years ago. They told me I better have a lot of peanuts because that was how they kept her quiet. Essentially they rewarded her every time she screeched. They even named her Peanut lol. It's been hard to get my family to not react to her screeching by banging on the cage or yelling. She's come a long way and rarely screeches. She still lunges and nips, she will step up. I'd like to add a Umbrella Cockatoo who needs a more active home but I'm concerned about how the birds will get along.

    My gcc is driving me insane with the attention screams. The second she hears me up she starts and doesn't stop even when I roll her cage out into the common area. I've tried training but this is my first bird and feel I am making mistakes in evem that. She has gotten randomly aggressive at 7 years old and will lash out whenever she can feel it's time to go back into her cage.. I don't even know what to do anymore.

    Stumbled upon your videos, and fell in love with them! Wondering though if you've ever had a bird that does NOT know how to play with toys??? I have a 5 yr old quaker parrot, hand raised/fed prior to her coming home with us. loves human company, however when in her cage she has no clue how to self entertain with any toy I've ever put in with her, so it leaves me with a very vocal bored bird when she can't be out. I'm unsure where to go or what else to try to get her to show interest in bird toys, sitting down and having very silly fun with her toys has so far done nothing but earn me some long " are you crazy?" side looks from not only Cosmo, but my family too lol

    We have a problem we really fell into.
    We got a Senegal and intentionally got her before she was weened so we could finish the weening for bonding. The bond and trust was amazing. The bird was quiet and enjoyed lots of family time. At about 2 months old she was playing in her cage and fell. Nothing she hadn’t done before but this time the last three feathers on the tip of her wing hooked on the cross bar on the way down suspending her by those feather. No doubt this was extremely painful and she launched in an ungodly fit of distress screams. It got our attention and we rushed to her aid. Now we knew to ignore unwanted sounds but this was a cry for help and a valid one.
    Now she does that ALL the time. Sometimes she even flaps her wings frantically as she did on that day.
    She is 5 months old now. The screaming has forced us to move her out of our living room to a part of the house we don’t go and surround her area with special sound proofing blankets to help us ignore her screaming. We bring her out with us when she’s quiet and at the first scream she goes back until she’s quiet for an hour or so and then try again.
    She’s not getting out much now and I hurt for her. We’re ignoring her but she’s not getting it. Help!

    Jaime, I have a Greenwing in the den in a BIG cage. He will wake me up about 7:30 or so screaming, screaming. I ignore it till I get up to see why he is. He will stop and while I feed the dogs, cats, and myself. When I sit to eat he starts up again, I will call to him and say Mykonos I'm right here. He has toys, 2 foraging toys, I have put nuts in a piece of newspaper wadded up to see if he will try to find it. But he screams every morning but not at night. So don't know what to do with him. He has been in the house since the first of the year. When I first brought him in he didn't do it. Just started a month ago. Nothing has changed at all! Thanks for any help with him. I so enjoy your videos so much it has helped me a lot with the birds we have.

    One of the things I've been thinking about is if the key to good dog behavior translates the same with birds: exercise. You play with your dog an hour or two (depending on breed) twice a day, and they are chill inside the house. Does the same principal apply to birds, like you do an hour of flying indoors and they are chill for a while after that?
    However, that would conflict with your note on training for 2-5mn only. Maybe it's different for flying?

    Keep doing Birdtricks Tuesdays. Your videos are interesting and full of useful advice. I wish they existed 15 years ago when my bird began screaming. Nothing worked until I came up with a fairly clumsy method. After initially checking to make sure there was no physical reason for screaming, I would cover the cage when screaming began, and uncover it 3 hours after screaming stopped. Took a month to kill the screaming, and about a year to train the bird to complain in non screaming ways........pretty ugly year, gotta admit. Anyway please keep the videos coming.

    I wish there could be something done for the Macaw at the Central Dakota Humane Society in Mandan. He yelps like a dog and it is PIERCING! Every time he makes that sound, it startles everyone in the area. I jump five feet every time. I don't know much about that bird though. One story I heard was his old owner died and hasn't been able to be re-homed due to the fact that he makes that noise all the time for seemingly no reason and so, as a result, has become a permanent resident at the shelter. But I don't know his full and true story though. All I know is he seems to only know how to make that yelping noise though I think he did say 'hello' once but it's been ages since I last visited.

    So ignoring my Quaker parrot when he screams after I leave the room doesn’t work. He will continuously scream for up to 30 minutes, with almost no pauses long enough for me to reinforce the silence. Other than this, he’s the perfect bird - I just don’t know what else to do!

      So, we just got our 5 1/2 month old Quaker female 20 days ago. She had no training other than hand weaning by the lady we got her from. The first week she never made a peep. Just trying to figure out where the heck she was, who are these new people and what happened to all the other birds. Then she found her voice! I trained her step ups the first day home, next day trusted me enough to preen her pin feathers. Day three gives kisses on command and take a bath. Sounds perfect right? Until I left the room and Lordy you’d think she’d been shot with her screaming (or oinking like a guinea pig.) my daughter suggested a loud clap of my hands from other side of the room and say No to distract her. Worked like a charm. She still tries to screech when I walk away (it’s usually when I’m making noise in the kitchen). But now she knows what no means. When she quiets down, I reward that with a sliced almond. The screaming is less now, and more chattering and giggling (she has my laugh now) and trying to form words, and kissing sounds. I adore her!

    How do you discipline a bird? I once held a parrot and it was attracted to my jewelry and kept biting at my earrings, then my necklace, then the button on my shirt. I was in a pet store. How do you deal with that? Another question is do your birds ever fight with each other and how do you resolve that? Thanks!!

    It’s really interesting how you often mention that you don’t spend a lot of time with your birds, only a short, select session per day with each bird. Whereas a lot of the bird youtubers I’ve seen in the past say to never leave your birds “caged” for hours on end. I guess it is the difference between a trainer for behavior and specific tasks (ie flight) versus a person who considers their bird a companion/member of the family. I actually passed on getting a bird because I felt like I didn’t have enough time for the bird and felt bad at the idea of having it caged for 9 hours a day while I’m at work.

    We had a previously owned sun conure. The poor guy had horrible abandonment issues an had to be in your face and get attention 24/7, the second you turned your back to him he would scream incessantly.
    We tried to give him tons of toys, but he wouldn't even look at them. So you had to stimulate him all day.

    How long do you find extinction behaviour lasts? I have a Blue Fronted Amazon, he's 11 years old and I've had him since he was 10. He screams for attention. Since I've had him I have ignored his screaming and reinforced him whistling for my attention but the extinction behaviour has persisted for a long time now. Thanks! Nayla.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  9 лет назад +2

      Nayla Cirik It's much harder to break bad habits than make new ones. So I would work on teaching a replacement behavior if I was you, to be working on two things at once. That way you aren't just ignoring unwanted behavior but you are giving attention (rewarding) desired behavior. So your bird can feel more in control for how to obtain attention through methods of not screaming. www.birdtricks.com/store/flocktalk.html

    My conure only screams when it sees me and stops when i leave the room. Am I supposed to ignore it when it starts screaming when i enter the room? It never stops screaming unless its falling asleep. Then when i come closer to the cage It screams again. Its only a baby so I guess I am at a perfect time to teach it manners(?) I keep watching your videos and im super afraid I will mess something up. Another thing is its still is a bit afraid of the enviroment and spends all the time out of the cage on my hand (which makes it hard for me to move around). I have a perch where I put it and try to reward it for getting off my hand. But before she even finishes the treat shes back on my hand. I know I need to be very careful so that I dont make mistakes. I feel like me and her are both learning.

    Oh *thank you* for the "feed before the event"-idea.
    I've done all the others consistently. My biggest problems with my (rescue) macaw are: visitors accidently enforcing screaming-for-attention (despite repeatedly being told not to) and a screwed up neighbour (same app. building) who screams/howls at all hours (esp at night) and sets of the birds (and I am so *not* feeding that sociopathic creep! ;P )
    Sooo: maybe do a video about training visiting humans?? (if you havent already!! I've been watching birdtricks for ages, but probably not seen them all :D )

    Hello Bird Tricks, I took your advice with clicker and touch training and I could not believe the results! I have four budgies and only one of which will willingly step up. The other three only will with food. So I thought I would go back to basics and use your advice and within minutes I had all of them moving to where the stick was to touch it for a treat. Day one success now just for a break and get back to it later. I know you mostly work with bigger birds but I would love to see some budgie training videos as most videos on the internet for budgies are taming ones not training ones (same thing different meaning). Do you have any suggestions as to make what I have done better. My goal is to have them all hand tame in a month and maybe towards the end work on some recall. I was thinking of replacing the stick with my finger to speed up the process but I know its a set back in the long run because it means that my hand equals food haha. I love all your videos and I hope the show goes well for you.

    Thanks for this video. I have a pearly (f) and green cheek (M) that scream constantly. I’ve had a crazy year and moved twice to two different states. They have been together in the same cage together for 5 years (always upgrading). I’m thinking it’s time to separate them and see if that helps. I’m just concerned my lifestyle is stressing them out. Working on buying a home for that aviary and stability. For now we’re in an apartment and I need them to stop calling for me. It’s difficult because they aren’t interested in the toys they have. Should I separate them? Would this help with the toy situation?
