Those are some big twists. But there's a huge swerve that you missed. It comes from a much smaller film than any on this list. The Killer Is Who? Salvage (2006) In this movie, Claire is a college student who works nights at a gas station. When she gets off work one morning, she's picked up in her boyfriend's truck by a man she's never net. After some cat and mouse stuff, the stranger kills her. Then, she wakes at the gas station. Thinking it was a dream, Claire goes on with her day. What follows is a grim version of Happy Death Day. This time, she's been alive long enough for everyone to start turning on her. For her part, Claire is scared and doesn't know what is going on. Finally cornered by the killer, again, it's revealed that Claire is actually the guy who has been killing her all this time. Turns out, the killer's final victim was Claire and he's in hell, reliving her final hours over and over.
So many people pass or downplay Identity because of the "it was all a dream/in his head" trope. But it was really well done and keeps you guessing all the way to the last minute, even after the multiple personality twist is revealed. Solid performances from most of the cast. It's one of my favorites.

I watched Fight Club for the first time a few months ago with my mom and sister. I knew that there was supposed to be some plot twist at the end but I could’ve remember what it was. When I actually watched the movie I was blown away! It was so good!
I remember my dad taking me to see the Empire Strikes Back when it was first released. When Darth Vader revealed his secret, the whole cinema gasped and it was all anybody was talking about at school for days.
So, Edward Norton TWICE played characters with some kind of multiple personality/ schizophrenia and Kevin Spacey TWICE played criminals who got the better of the authorities investigating him. The "husband kills (or seems to kill) the wife" story has been used a lot too, always with some level of amnesia or ignorance.
For me the best part about Bodies Bodies Bodies is the way that it makes you completely believe there's a killer among them and you don't even notice throughout that they're killing each other and no-ones being offed one by one in the shadows as per the standard of these kinds of movies. A very fun flick.
Bodies x3 was fun and I honestly thought that there might have been some slasher esque killed who took out David and then they started to kill each other due to paranoia. Needless to say the actual ending was way better than my initial assumptions. I like that gen z was lambasted in a way, but not looked looked down upon throughout the film.
i didnt expect that ending but figured either something was up or figured the writing may just turn out to be contrived but despite suspecting something i was still pleasantly surprised with the twist.
The guy who plays Adam in Saw said in an interview that he didn't know tang the body in the room was a real person. Just a life sized, realistic doll. The shock we see on Adam's face when Jigsaw stands up is real.
Se7en is one of my most favorite films ever and one of the darkest endings I’ve ever seen. I’d also like to submit the ending of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Not necessarily a twist ending but…. Horrifying nonetheless
The Sixth Sense is one of my favorite movies. I remember when I first watched it and when the ending happened I was (like a lot of people) pretty confused but then my mom explained it to me better and I understood. Then it made me just want to watch the movie again. When I did rewatch the movie it is insane how you really never see Malcolm interact with another person other than Cole. I remember when we were watching it with my now ex stepsisters the oldest one was so mad at the wife because she seemed so horrible. Then at the very end she just felt bad for her 😂 Which that’s honestly true. She seems like kinda a bad wife but then you figure out that she’s just trying to move on from her murdered husband 😭
Psycho is another movie that I saw for the first time a little less than a year ago. It was so good and the twist was amazing. I thought it was weird that you never actually saw the mother. It reminded me of a Criminal Minds episode where a guy had multiple personalities but whenever the other personality spoke you never saw them. So the fact that you never see Norman’s mother kinda made me wonder if she was even there. And given the fact that Norman seemed to have an….interesting relationship with his mother it wouldn’t have shocked me if he had created another personality that was her. But the ending was still so good and very shocking
as someone with DID (formerly known as MPD - multiple personality disorder), i love this theory! usually i hate media that uses this disorder and further stigmatizes it but sometimes the plot idea is just too good to not let a pass.
@@agnessofiacastrocarvalho774 No I knew he at some point had a mother but I just thought it was strange that we NEVER saw her considering how much Norman talked about her. We heard her but we never saw her which I just found strange
That’s the thing with the film Psycho. You had to see it young or when it first came out. The concept has been done to death so many times that I can understand someone kinda sorta predicting/feeling out the twist at some point be cause it has been referenced and spoofed so many times. I’m however still happy that you got enjoyment out of it! It’s definitely a classic for a reason.
@@LaFlor718 Exactly. Even if I kinda figured out the ending it didn’t take away the fact that movie was a masterpiece of a film and the ending was executed extremely well. And Anthony Perkins acting (both as the more normal yet clearly disturbed Norman Bates and the psychotic, killer Norman Bates) was so good. His performance really is what sells the creepiness of the movie. Without it the whole movie wouldn’t be the iconic and creepy film it is today!
Old Boy is an amazing twist on the idea behind "The Count of Monte Christo", begging the questions what constitutes innocence and in turn, what constitutes justice. And that's still just the tip of the iceberg. A masterpiece of a movie!
It's high time WatchMojo expanded their library and started including newer or obscure entries into their lists. Anybody who has been watching this channel for a while already knew entries such as Psycho, The 6th Sense, Planet of the Apes etc. would be on it. Some of the other darker twists include: Incendies A Pure Formality The Tenant The Machinist Orphan Mystic River Prisoners Goodnight Mommy The Uninvited Audition Chinatown Haute Tension Spider ...and many more I am not remembering now.
Yes, Mystic River deserves an honorary mention at least, because of how absolutely realistic and grounded that concept is of actually killing the innocent man who was telling the truth this whole time.
yeah i used to be a fan of the channel but ended up watching less and less before eventually unsubscribing since on some of these lists you can predict the entries if not the order based off the title of the video alone since they tend to mainly pick and order their choices based off how famous and critically acclaimed the film is so they end up with a ton of the same films appearing again and again and again. They fall into the same trap as some sites like Ranker where it's not quality or relevance that gets a movie to the top of a list but how popular it is.
I am surprised Logan Run is not on this list, with 2 examples, 1 finding out that they have been using the runners that made it to a certain point for food, and 2 there is no sanctuary.
Going into The Sixth Sense, I knew two things about it: it was about a boy who could see dead people and there was a big plot twist at some point. I spent the whole movie trying to figure out what the twist was going to be, and when I got to the end, and there hadn't been a twist, I was really confused and disappointed. I later learned that the "plot twist" was supposed to be the revelation that the character Bruce Willis played was dead the whole time, but honestly that confused me even more, since the movie starts by showing how he died.
Not gonna lie but the 1st time I ever seen Planet Of the Apes, I thought he was just really upset that they blew up the Statue Of Liberty. I was so confused as to why the movie ended with this dude having an existential life crisis over a statue when there was still killer apes trying to kill him.
@@barry4649 the hero's father is Darth Vader what you mean ? maybe it isn't for you because with todays standards it's not but back then ppl went crazy
The darkest plot twist in Barbarian isn't the monster- its that the monster is a baby raised in darkness who is a result of the owner kidnapping women, SA-ing them, and then having the children SA each other as well as him SA them........
depressing part is theres a few real stories like that, although the "underground" part isnt always true since those weirdos often end up viewing the whole thing as less of a incestuous sex slave harem and more of a "family". Often the presence of children as tools for extortion keeps the moms in line and once Stockholm syndrome sets in the slaves lose the will or even desire to escape making a dungeon more trouble then its worth, which if anything is even more fucked up.
@@arthas640 Stockholm syndrome isn't a real thing. The case that names it was the result of the police being so incompetent that the hostage-taker was genuinely more reassuring and basically all other cases are either the same shit or victim-blaming. There is no actual mental disorder there, at most it's a temporary reaction to appease someone dangerous and more likely it's a dismissive attack by the media at people who are too frightened to run away.
@@damelon7667 maybe it was huge for me because I didn't see it coming. I was involved in the Creature aspect of it, then that scene shows up and I was like "Whoa!"
@@damelon7667 You saw it coming that the village was set in modern times and the people basically went Amish to protect their kids from the big bad world? I call shenanigans - everyone get your broom.
15:57 - THIS is the scariest moment in Psycho; that crazed, deranged and excited look on Norman's face whilst baring his upper teeth is extremely unsettling and far more scary than the shower stabbing. It is such a departure from his normal, calm and kind demeanour that you can barely believe he is the same person as in this scene.
Most of these twists are amazing but I saw the 6th Sense twist a mile away. I was getting mad watching the movie, actually, saying to myself, "The twist better not be that he's dead." I mean -- he was shot at the beginning and then through the entire rest of the movie NO ONE but the kid talks to him. Come on! It was pretty obvious.
One of the best WatchMojo videos. I got spoiled once or twice but i dont care, i absolutely love endings of this kind... Thanks. Shutter Island and the 6th sense were spoiled by 'friends'. I still remember, but shutter Island is one of my favourite endings of all time
Am I the only one who didn’t find _”What’s in the box?”_ that big of a twist?! Doe had planned everything, down to the last detail…Mills & Somerset knocking on his door probably fast-tracked his plan a bit, but he allowed Mills to live- must have been for a reason! Memento was such a good movie, though predictable from the start. Leonard was never made out to be a psychopath, so someone else had to be pulling the strings. Identity is kinda underrated…I don’t think it got great reviews?! I especially loved that the kid was left in Malcolm’s mind- firstly, b/c it’s not a typical “happy ending” & second, you knew there wasn’t a sequel planned, so it ends with the murderer on the loose. In hindsight, I was pissed that I didn’t see DID coming! I was writing a paper & did a presentation on DID just before this movie came out 🤦🏻♀️
I think that "Incendies" (2010) should be a number one on this list. Unfortunately it doesn't seem very famous but it's a great movie. One of the best but also one of the most shocking movies I've ever seen.
The skin I live in- that is a movie with a dark twist, the doctor that has a female prisoner in his mansion who he rapes every night, is actually a man that has undergone drastic cosmetic and gender changing surgery that the doctor did without consent and is also the rapist and murder of the doctor’s dead daughter. That movie is just as wild as it’s twist.
As the mom to someone has actual DID (Multiple Personality Disorder), these movies cause people who have DID a lot of issues because most people BELIEVE that people who have these disorders have a "violent/murderous" Personality, causing those with DID to constantly have to explain that THIS IS A COMPLETE AND TOTAL MYTH. It causes mistrust- especially with employers- because this mythical portrayal in movies/shows is so impacted in our media that they take it as a given truth.
This!!!! Thank you, I was gonna comment something similar because I just hate hearing about the moive that do it. I get they are just movies and everything but I wish it was portrayed differently at least. I think there are some really fun and interesting ways to have movies, even horror movies be bacsed or have a character with DID but sadly the bad representation with the one “crazy” personality is all I ever see
But such is the case with all personality disorders. Psychopaths and sociopaths are not synonymous with murder. If you’re a murderer, the likelihood of you being a psychopath or sociopath is higher but you can absolutely have one of those disorders and not be violent whatsoever. It’s just an extreme being used for conflict because that’s what film is all about. Take it with a grain of salt.
Great list. Most of these movies I've seen and loved. Glad "Identity" is on there since I always thought that movie was underrated/overlooked. Anyway watchmojo lists are always spot-on!
When they're in Bill's Leather Shop, you can see someone looking in watching them from outside. That's John Doe stalking them. Also, Pitt had actually gotten hurt in the scene he's chasing Doe in the alley. The cast and sling he wears had to be written into it. There's some awesome BTS and Easter eggs to be seen.
Momento is similar to Silent Hill 2. Both of the main protagonists, James (Silent Hill 2) and Leonard (Momento), are two amnesiac widowers who learn about the status of their respective wives. In James's case, he eventually learned that his wife died and in Leonard's case, he learns that his wife was already dead. However, they both eventually learn through a horrifying truth that THEY were responsible for killing their respective wives. What's more, Momento came out in the year 2000 and Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001. Very convienent for the fan that got access to BOTH contents around such time.

Isn't the person who played Adam one of the producers/ writers of the film? It was him and James Wan?😂
@@zombiemon115 yeah. They came up with the idea of Saw together.
How do you not feel stupid typing this?
Adam, Leigh Whannell, the writer of this film played you a second time apparently!
Forgot The Skeleton Key(2005). Awesome twisted ending.
It still boggles me to this day how John Kramer just casually hung out in a bathroom with two dudes fighting for their lives
Barbarian was dark, fun and wierd.
P.S. Thank You for likes and have fun.
That movie was crazy, but I love it
Actually a really good movie
The perfect movie to watch with your wife or daughter because the actress made mistake after mistake. This movie is all about what not to do 😂
It was overrated
That movie was an ABSOLUTE trip. I’m still trying to process it
Se7en is one of my most favorite films ever and one of the darkest endings I’ve ever seen. I’d also like to submit the ending of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Not necessarily a twist ending but…. Horrifying nonetheless
True. Seven was disturbing , but Boy in The Striped Pajamas was heartbreaking.
@@sarahwagner2739 especially since not only is the movie so realistic, if anything it was _less_ dark then reality.
Old Boy definitely had one of the most disturbing and gross twists ever.
I was worried the entire time that Oldboy wasn't going to be #1, but my worries were relieved.
For me it was that oldboy won't be on this list
Same here. I was just 2 second close to type
Old boy left the chat
Same here. I even wrote the same before looking at the comments.
Primal Fear is one of my favorites. I actually never saw that ending coming. Same with Sixth Sense.
Agree. Primal Fear was one of my favorites. When he stutters to mock Richard Gere…
I discovered the book series before I saw the movie. I wasn't sure it was the same story, given Gere's track record for strange movies.
The thing with Primal Fear is that even if you saw the twist there's still the secondary twist too.
I’ve been watching your videos for a long time. I’m talking years. I love it here ❤. Keep up the great work guys.
Why d'you mean? Are you implying that Norma Bates NEVER actually existed? Because evebody's got a mother, but you already know that... so wdym?
Some of the other darker twists include:
Incendies
A Pure Formality
The Tenant
The Machinist
Orphan
Mystic River
Prisoners
Goodnight Mommy
The Uninvited
Audition
Chinatown
Haute Tension
Spider
...and many more I am not remembering now.
Yes, Mystic River deserves an honorary mention at least, because of how absolutely realistic and grounded that concept is of actually killing the innocent man who was telling the truth this whole time.
@@Defqonsigliere Mystic River was brutal all around. Great movie but don't think I could watch it anymore. Just absolutely gutting.
yeah i used to be a fan of the channel but ended up watching less and less before eventually unsubscribing since on some of these lists you can predict the entries if not the order based off the title of the video alone since they tend to mainly pick and order their choices based off how famous and critically acclaimed the film is so they end up with a ton of the same films appearing again and again and again. They fall into the same trap as some sites like Ranker where it's not quality or relevance that gets a movie to the top of a list but how popular it is.
Angel Heart
I’d add :
The Others
The Ring
The Prestige
Great List!
I love that they added Identity !!!!!
Think Saw has my favourite movie twist of all-time. Don't think it will ever stop being absolutely genius.
I am surprised Logan Run is not on this list, with 2 examples, 1 finding out that they have been using the runners that made it to a certain point for food, and 2 there is no sanctuary.
‘Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back’ is still one of the top 5 best Star Wars movies of all time.
Had The Sixth Sense ruined for me by The Big Bang Theory. Lol.
If you watch it again, the movie does NOT cheat. It's all in the up and up.
Very overrated movie in my opinion. Stir of Echoes is much better
@@michaelsutliff6817 It really doesn’t! I remember the second time I watched it and really payed attention it all did add up.
Amy from Gone Girl was ABSOLUTELY INSANE.
Not gonna lie but the 1st time I ever seen Planet Of the Apes, I thought he was just really upset that they blew up the Statue Of Liberty. I was so confused as to why the movie ended with this dude having an existential life crisis over a statue when there was still killer apes trying to kill him.
For the last nearly 3 decades, I can’t see the ending of Planet of the Apes without picturing Troy McClure yelling those words.
RIP Phil Hartman
_Primal Fear_ is Edward Norton's best performance, in my opinion.
No doubt about it.
Darth Vader being revealed as Luke Skywalker’s father is the greatest cinematic reveal ever, should have been number 1.
Agreed
It’s not dark at all though
@@barry4649 the hero's father is Darth Vader what you mean ? maybe it isn't for you because with todays standards it's not but back then ppl went crazy
Great list but two spanish movies are missing here. 2016 AND 2012. Those movies blew my mind away because i never saw the twists coming. Materpieces!
So many people I know missed the real twist in shutter island of “which is worse, to live a monster or die a good man” line.
What about " The Village?"
That plot twist was huge.
Same with "Signs" and "Unbreakable", but it's become 'cool' to hate on M. Night so only Sixth Sense gets any love anymore.
Meh... not really. The movie itself was average and everyone already new the "trope" at that point. It didn't really change the movie at all
@@damelon7667 maybe it was huge for me because I didn't see it coming. I was involved in the Creature aspect of it, then that scene shows up and I was like "Whoa!"
@@damelon7667 You saw it coming that the village was set in modern times and the people basically went Amish to protect their kids from the big bad world? I call shenanigans - everyone get your broom.
@@smgdfcmfah Learn to read please.
You forgot Angel Heart, one of the most unexpected plot twists ever
🎯
bull's eye
Barbarian is pretty good!! So is Seven and Get Out!! 💗♥️💗 Would You Rather is also one of my favorites!!
I never forgot Jacobs Ladder. Cried like a ten-year-old at a Justin Bieber concert. That ending was just too much to bear- haunting and gut wrenching.
I hope "Upgrade" makes it kuz the ending to that FLOORED me. I just got chills remembering it
Such a damn good movie
No mention of the twist in Chinatown is pretty surprising.
Definitely
Oh yeah, that's a wrenching one.
I loved the plot twist of Stonehearst Asylum it is similar to the shutter island in a lot of way but it is in my opinion well done
Agreed!
Is it worth watching? It's free on RUclips and pops up in my recommendations a fair bit but I've never given it a go.
Really good stuff. Good list probably add Inception, and new comer Sleeping Dogs.
You need to include "The Others", a 2001 movie starring nicole kidman. Its has dark and clever twist
Awesome list 👌 thanks
I think there are some really fun and interesting ways to have movies, even horror movies be bacsed or have a character with DID but sadly the bad representation with the one “crazy” personality is all I ever see
Watch Moon Knight. That's the best and positive representation of DID patient
Wow can't believe Kevin Spacey had been a part of 3 insane and dark twists 😃
Too bad he's a predator
@@KimBlaQue That was the third twist, he's a monster
Gotta love a good plot twist if done right.
Skeleton Key > Get Out
They did the exact same plot first and far more believable 🤨
And much better, in my opinion!!!!
Great list. Most of these movies I've seen and loved. Glad "Identity" is on there since I always thought that movie was underrated/overlooked. Anyway watchmojo lists are always spot-on!
Seven was such a dark and twisted movie that was very well executed. Sadly it is underrated. That ending made me so uncomfortable
the whole movie makes me uncomfortable, i love the actors and its so well done but its hard for me to watch all the way through
It’s such a dark movie - but it’s so smart. And the soundtrack… 🖤
This was awesome!
Barbarian was one of the best, completely unexpected twists I've seen in a very long time.
19:57 now i know where Alex the Lion got that line from.
That line when Melman accidentaly burn the Liberty Statue that Alex built and he say:.....
Can anything really top "WHAT'S IN THE BOOOOX?"
that up to you to decide
That was the most memorable one for me definitely!
Every time I get an Amazon package I say “what’s in the box.”
I absolutely loved BARBARIAN. It’s one of my favorite horror films of the last decade.
I also love the plot twist in Where the Crawdads Sing. Was not expecting that at all
Also The Mist should 100% be on this list
“Incendies” has such a dark and gritty plot twist. Should be on here!
16:35 Fan theory: *7* is a prequel to *12 Monkeys* Brad Pitts character in both movies are the same, he went mad in *7* & later appeared in *12 Monkeys*
Jacob's Ladder was weird for sure.
A lot of great films on this list. I really enjoyed Jacob's Ladder and Identity.
Ah what’s in the boxxxx?!😂 That one and shutter Island are two of my most favorite horror movies. God just the thought of loosing two loves of your life (both wife and baby) is gut wrenching. Saw franchise has a bunch of plot twists by now as well, but with so many movies at this point it’s kinda expected for them to have a plot twist.😂
Chinatown had a pretty shocking twist for its time. "She's my sister and my daughter"
Surprised Ash being a robot/corporate spy from Alien wasn't on this list
Nobody mentions "Frailty" that move is underrated...
The movie 23 with Jim carry had a good plot twist
When i clicked, i had hoped primal fear was included and was pleasantly surprised when it was. Incredible plot twist.
