  • It's been six months since powerful quakes struck south-eastern Turkey and parts of Syria, causing unprecedented destruction. They hit in the early hours of February 6 and were followed by violent aftershocks. In Turkey, over 50,000 people died, according to official figures. Millions were left homeless.
Rebuilding costs will be in the billions of dollars. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to "heal the wounds" of earthquake survivors. But many find it difficult to see a future. Our correspondent Julia Hahn reports from Hatay, one of the worst-hit provinces.

It's almost 4 years since the quake in my city Durrës, Albania. There are still so many buildings waiting to be demolished.

‘’Turkey struggles to rebuild’’, no it doesn’t DW. You are just showing what you want to show. Thousands of new apartments are currently under construction and many are almost finished already. All the people there got more than enough food, water and other suplies and live in new houses already. Hence why the ended up voting for Erdogan again. You should consider changing your name to ‘’anti-Turkey’’.

I just hope this time around they actually build good homes
The fact that these homes are built so quickly smells like corruption.

@@Orangecatenergy none of the newly build earthquake resistant TOKI apartments collapsed during the earthquake. So yeah, not corruption at all.

UN should enforce grain from Ukraine, building materials into turkey...they'll be needed later for the aforementioned, so turkey is better on its feet. Seems a win win, plus a brilliant opportunity money wise.
Feeding people and building homes is something even Russia shouldn't be able to veto.

Ukraine needs building materials and Turkey does not need more food.

Turkey should build houses and not weapons against its neighbors
      who helped during the earthquakes

nobody is preventing building materials from being brought to turkey. they probably are being prevented from reaching some affected parts of syria though, in large part by turkey.

Welcome back BND, we have missed you for a while. I guess someone woke you up because of coming local elections. Comparing the floods in Germany back in 2021 Turkiye is doing a lot better than you considering the size of the area effected by the quakes is like half the size of Germany. You surprised me by not having any experts btw.
