Ian Bremmer's Quick Take: Hi everybody. Ian Bremmer here and responding to what is certainly a very dramatic turn of events in my country, the United States, with former President Trump at a rally appearing to have been shot, an apparent assassination attempt, and he's okay, but certainly didn't have to go that way. It looks like he was at least hurt, a minor injury, grazed, blood on his ear, got back up when the shots stopped, and again, appears to be fine. But that cannot be said for the state of American democracy.
This is a very grave turn of events in a country that is very deeply polarized, in a country where a great many Americans do not believe that their democracy is healthy or particularly functional, and where a large majority of Americans believe that the domestic political opposition is out to destroy that democracy. This is the worst sort of event that can happen in that environment, and I deeply worry that it presages much more political violence and social instability to come. This is the kind of thing that we have seen historically in lots of countries facing instability. It frequently does not end well. And the US, of course, is far more powerful; its institutions are resilient, but they have been under stress and eroding an attack for decades now.
Lots of things to say about this. Maybe the first, about the campaign itself, is that image of Trump standing up with blood on his face and injured and with his fist raised up and the Secret Service all around him, and it was he's saying fight, fight, and there's a flag above him is an iconic image. I suspect it is an image that will become very, very important for the remainder of this campaign. It makes it more likely that Trump wins. The fact that President Biden and his serious vulnerability is his age and that he's seen to not be physically robust, that he's frail, that he will, and we saw that with the debate, and everyone's talked about it for two weeks. This is the opposite of frail, and I don't know if it was adrenaline or instinct or what it was that got into Trump after someone tried to shoot him, but that response and being caught on tape is, I think, going to be a rally for his people for a long time. And I expect it to lead all the headlines on this issue as people across the world see it over the coming hours and days. So, that's the first topic.

All well and good to try to take the high road and be bigger, but some times there are extreme cases where the individual is responsible at every level, from justices appointed to legislation, to being given leeway in courts, to taking money from gun lobbyists and dictators while praising them openly. He advocates for violence all the time, even protestors standing between him and a photo op with an upside down Bible in front of a church he never attends.
If there were ever a case where we'd say assassination gets an exception we always say "someone should've killed Hitler before the holocaust" as if that was more obvious than Trump's case for such an exception...
Seriously, think about. If ever there were a case for assassination, in a country where a school is shot up every single day every year for a decade, on average. If ever there were a morally reasonable target of gun violence, would it not be this one individual?

Can you recall that in the media they had calling nazi, racist, or fascist to Donald Trump since 2016 and still going on and on ? . Can you call it on that "reconciliation" ?
The case was stayed as Supreme Court decided on presidential immunity. Following their (unfortunate) decision, there is a 25-day hold per SCOTUS rules, until the district judge receives the case back and can then decide which of trump's indicted acts were "official" vs not.
And many of us in America agree that Jan. 6 has not been dealt with sufficiently. Now this assassination attempt feeds trump's twisted narrative: that the prosecutor is a persecutor, with Biden the one who arranged it all (not even remotely true).
This is truly terrifying.

We need shows of unity & but we also need a long term solution: educating our citizens. We do not do that anymore & as a result people don’t have the skills to screen out BS anymore. It’s what’s driving this polarization & tribalism. We have to stop coddling & making excuses for people & expect more from them so they can contribute to the Body Politic. It use to be people were more level-headed & accepting of results in the context of voting in a democracy. This is the overarching problem. I’m frequently aghast at how little a person knows from counting change to knowing who is president & how many stars are in our flag. It’s stunning. I remember a better world & I want it back. I saw the opportunity to change the road we are on early on with Trump bc he is not a creature of Washington & doesn’t pull punches worrying about future consequences-to a degree. He’s a thinking adult that didn’t get us into a war. I see the authoritarian proclivities but I also think our long-lived institutions can blunt those tendencies & we will get the change in direction we need. There is a radical difference between political assassination attempts, whether they target a democratic leader vs an authoritarian one. During democracy, if a leader that threatens democracy, a potential autocrat, gets murdered, all that happens is the threat is removed and, at worst, postponed. If such a leader is removed while in power, there are better chances for autocracy to unravel. Now, if if it is a democratic leader that gets murdered in a democracy, it is an attack on democracy and a political loss, but democracy should not be at risk. No democratic leader or project is there forever, nor the nature of government absolutely hinges on them. People are not, in practice, irreplaceable. If a democratic leader is murdered under autocratic rule, then it gets more serious, because then yes, it is often the case that singular leaders are key, and their assassination is likely to depress, scare, and weaken dissenters, therefore decreasing chances of democratization.
But the US still remains a democracy. Therefore, while we must condemn political violence, we mustn't forget that violence coming from one side does not mean exactly the same as violence coming from the opposite side, when sides aren't equivalent, when one side threatens democracy and the other is just democratic.
Besides, it is always authoritarians that bring violence, whether they are in power, using institutional violence to keep everybody else out of power, or they fan and use violence, verbal and eventually physical, to get in power.
If violent people suffer violence, who are contemplating and using various forms of violence for the sake of power, thus attacking people's rights, it is not at all the same as if peaceful democrats, citizens at large, or even activists fighting for freedom, endure authoritarian violence. Not the same at all, even though all blood is red the same.
The US and all of humankind face again an existential threat coming from authoritarians across the world. We, i.e. this 66 million-year-old biosphere, including our species and, likely, close to 90% of all species alive, just cannot afford another round of world madness, conflict, and assorted tyrannies. Democracy must fight and prevail NOW, if we are to survive at all over the remainder of the 21st century and into the next. Otherwise we might, in the luckliest of scenarios, just survive as a stone age Homo sapiens, only worse than in the Pleistocene, and without any chance ever again to develop an advanced industrial civilization.

If you are really serious about addressing democracy, then we must address the narcissism epidemic that has got us here. Im not suggesting everyone is personality disordered, but most of us aren't the nice people we like to think of ourselves as. There is a LOT of good evidence to suggest that problematic narcissistic traits have gone through the roof. A big part of that process means an honest look at ourselves. Narcissism is not and US vs THEM issue. A great many people need to grow up. Blame is for children. Responsibility is for adults.
