I agree but I doubt it'd happen sadly

I don't see why they didn't map it like a controller for gaming. Stick some buttons on the grips, maybe foot pedals for your triggers, and you have a pretty neat twin-stick design.
Not sure about now, but when steam big picture launched couple of years ago, it used a similar system for typing using the controller sticks

They're not going to sell too many of these compared to a regular keyboard, so the costs for design and tooling of even "cheap" plastic are going to be spread over a much smaller number of keyboards. Okay I understand this is for people with disabilities but for $400 thats the cheapest plastic shell ever. It looks like it cost $20 dollars to make at most. Honestly the build quality is horrendous. I wonder what kind of margins this company is nabbing.
Probably a lot of cost due to development and loans that goes in to the price.
That is a price you pay when you cant sell something to the general public even as novelties (Most as seen on tv products). the more niche a product is the more it will cost and the more likely it is to remove access to it for those who need it most.
@LacroiX well you know a GTX2080ti is just a circuit board with fans on it
Plastic moulding is incredibly expensive at low volumes
Since this product helps a person with a disability communicate, insurance will most likely cover it. Considering that it's pretty flimsy and does not have many moving parts unlike a keyboard, it costs very little to make. There was software to be written for the product but that goes for any HID, and the cost of a patent to ensure only you can make them. That's how specialty medical products and pharmaceutical companies make a lot of money. It's pretty smart.
*Costs $400*

Shut the fuck up twitter user
@@somebody700 It's expensive because people with disabilities are a small minority, and as such the per-unit cost of manufacture goes up, so they have to charge more to cover their costs. That's the reality of market capitalism. If more able-bodied people bought and used them however, this larger market would theoretically incentivise companies to develop cheaper alternatives, competition blah blah blah you know how economics works. Crippling arthritis, missing fingers/hands or those that use full limb prosthetics, muscle paralysis in the hands and fingers, certain types of autism that register hand movement better than finger movement, mild to moderate parkinson's disease, brain injuries that mess with motor control, etc. Could potentially make it easier to learn for partially to fully blind people combined with voice controls since hand position is easier to learn than finger position, and you can't lose your place as easily.

When developing the computer mouse Xerox found that test subjects actually had greater acuity with a foot pedal based controller. It was inspired by the ease at which people control the functions of an automobile with their feet. Less demand due to less buyers.
+
qantj vulpis Demand is supposed to have the opposite impact on price...
Usually, but less people likely to buy it means they need a higher price to get the same amount of money. They are operating in a niche and can charge much higher prices than otherwise.
If you think 400 is that overpriced for a unique recnetly released effective niche keyboard, then I take it you have never had to deal with buying things made for peole with disabilities...
Brand new unique designed products are always way more costly, add in that the deisgned is not gonna appeal to most people, the price goes up even more.
Personally I don't think 400 is that much, when I had my stroke, the wheelchair I had to get was theb etter part of 1k. If I had to get an electronic one, it owuld have costed thousands. High end software for disabled software for diasbled ppl can cost hundreds or more too. This deisgn seems like it would make it invaluble for ppl with partcular disabiltied, making it so they can type as fast or faster than the avg person
In fact I owuld be surprised if an avg person ends up tpying faster with this than with a nroaml keyboard. Yeah, don't bother. Keep your $400
Devas JJH I actually had something quite similar to this and it worked for me.
Yeah. I'm autistic and this thing just boggles my mind. Granted I'd have to try to be sure but I see no point as I've never had any problems using a standard QWERTY keyboard.
Though saying that, autism is a spectrum and if this works for someone else, that's all that matters.
Ethereal Psyche yeah. I'm kinda on the lower end of the autism spectrum so it may help for the higher end of the spectrum. Still though
It intrigued me, honestly. I'd love to try, but not with that price tag.
Whats next, a 3000$ useless slab of tech thats counts sheep?
Oh i forgot, we have Apple for that...
Mister_Greek very true
Lmao
Don't forget the *new* mobile $1000 version!
Mister_Greek Omg i love you know
hehe
Arguably the Orbitouch isn't a keyboard as it is a specialized interface device for people with severe RSI or arthritis.
This keyboard was secretly made by members of the furry community so that they could cosplay while in Discord.
And from sarcasm, sometimes brilliance is born.
Know who else could really use a keyboard like this, if it were built in a more durable fashion? People working in extreme or dangerous climates - no mittens or hazmat-suit gloves are going to cause fat-fingering with that keyboard. And yes, it will likewise make online flirting easier for furries. :)
Theoretically it could also be put in places where emergency help can be summoned, as an aid for those with hearing impairments or whom are mute - instantly accessible keyboard, that's pretty easy to figure out, even if you've never seen it before.
Plus, I bet that if kids were raised on that thing, they'd be able to get incredibly fast by 1st grade. Manual dexterity plays almost no role in how quickly your words move from your mind to the page. They could pretty much learn to write at the same pace they learn to read.
I really hope this idea goes further.
I've been in car accidents that were more relaxing than watching someone type on that.
Lol
