With everything that happens between the Master and the Doctor, it's easy to forget that they were friends once.
Elfdaughtergames They still are in some respects. Missy finally recognised that. However the Doctor will never know that she stood by his side.
I have a theory that the master was his partner on galiffrey before the war hit and killed there children
@@madwoots well, one of them anyway, don't forget about Patience. now that missy has spoken of having a kid I like to think it was made by her sitting some of the Doctor's DNA and looming one. but no one really knows.....not yet anyway. lol
@@gabbeskillz6262 First of all, that's homophobic.
Second of all, timelords can change gender when they regenerate. And the first version of the Doctor we see isn't actually the first regeneration of him. Plus the Master could of been female in the past.
Also how have I only just realised the timelords seem to have their own name-titles. It's weird. The Doctor, The Master, if any other timelords were left they might have name titles as well.
I love how The Master was being all cocky about dying in refusing to stay with The Doctor but when he asked if the drumming would stop even after death only for The Doctor to say nothing, he was legitimately scared

Even though The Master has been his nemesis for 40 years, it doesn't mean he doesn't care or that it doesn't hurt, the two last Timelords in existence. They have a bond, whether they want to admit it or not.

Liam Catterson WELL DUH! HE PUT HIS HEART AND SOUL INTO HIS ACTION IN THIS SHOW, after all, he grew up with Doctor Who anyways!
What is interesting is here, he refused to regenerate to not be imprisoned by The Doctor, and in season 10, that is where Missy ended up! Was a cool call back
I disagree.
I think he refused to continue living because he achieved his lifelong goal of conquering the Earth, and building a galactic empire....
But, in the end, he could not handle it.
He could not keep everyone on Earth from overthrowing him by working together!
To someone as fiercely obsessive and ambitious as the Master, that must have been a horrible disappointment, and proof to him that his only dream in Life could not come true because of his own personal inadequacy.
That would be enough to drive a human to suicide, or at least to not care if they live or die. 😢
Doctor Who and Thor: The Dark World. See simliar it is now?!
@@Phoenix-tk7dv Why do you keep commenting that?
@@MisterUnknown707 Well It's a long story
But if he died here, refused to regenerate and got cremated, how can Missy exist?
This scene is made all the more powerful when you realise that the Doctor believed he was personally responsible for the destruction of the Time Lords and regrets that action. Finding out that the Master was the other "survivor" replaced his hope of redemption with purpose - reforming the Master (the Doctor makes a go at this about 1000 years later in his lifetime, resulting in Missy being conflicted between siding with her past self and siding with the Doctor). The Master refusing to regenerate hurts the Doctor 3 times;
1) It's an insult - the Master has the option of regenerating and living as the Doctor's prisoner or dying. In choosing to not regenerate (I didn't know regenerating was a choice until this scene), the Master is implying that death is preferable to a life under the Doctor's supervision - the idea of such a life openly disgusts the Master.
2) The Master dying would leave the Doctor alone (as the last Time Lord) once again - the Doctor's hope of redemption would have been replaced with regret for his actions in ending the Time War.
3) The Doctor still considered the Master to be his friend, despite them being rivals. He's watching his friend die, and that is one of the worst things a person can experience.
This scene becomes all the more powerfull when you realise that the doctor only wanted to keep the master so that eventually one of them would regenarate into a woman and they could repopulate the Time Lord species. I understand why the master refused to regenerate, he probably would've been some sort of sex slave in a pregnancy cult. This is the real lore I refuse to believe the Doctor wanted him to live because he was "the last of the timelords", the Doctor was hiding his true intensions behind that phrase. Naughty

Even though Matt Smith is my favourite *doctor,* nobody can argue that David Tennant's era (2006-2009) is simply the most solid, and the peak of New-Who. Such a brilliant three partner this. Loved Utopia!
Totally agree! There are fantastic moments throughout all of New Who, but the RTD/Tennant era has always been the greatest, by a long stretch. I hope Chris Chibnall can match RTD, or even improve upon him!
Yup I agree!! I really want Chibnall to raise Doctor Who up again

The last of the Doctor’s kin, his childhood friend, his one of the greatest enemies but still the only friend he got in the end, dying in his arms and his last words were him winning the game. One of the few moments I really felt that I was watching a time lord’s adventures.
Whenever people think that Missy is the last incarnation of the Master because she died in The Doctor Falls, I point out this scene. The Master never stays dead
also, the number of times the Master 'died' on screen. I think Missy even said it was something like 83 times she had 'died' in front of the Doctor. (ill have to re-listen to the story to get the exact number.)

Even the Master can't keep the Master dead
And then came 2020...
Why cut out the awesome bit with Martha’s Mum and the gun?? It showed real character development for her, listening and putting trust in The Doctor, it’s a great scene!
I believe (though I may be wrong) that that moment was cut from the BBC America broadcast for time - that part's also cut from the episode on Netflix - maybe this clip's taken from that version. Or maybe they cut that bit so they could keep this clip to 4ish minutes while still keeping the context of the start of the scene. Either way, you're right, it's a jarring bit to cut when you know what's missing
Yeah I remember it being cut on Netflix, but I didn't think they'd cut it on the official RUclips channel too! It's a shame.
Wait why on earth would they cut it? It ruins the whole experience and people who've never watched the full episode are missing out!! :(

Btw why has the part with Martha's mum pointing the gun at the Master in an attempt to kill him and then being prevented by the Doctor been cut from this version? The original version showed such character development and impact as it showed Martha's mum to be able to do the right thing even after enduring the hell the Master put her through. :)

When John Simms went deaf in his right ear!
It's weird, I know, but I can't help imagining this scene with Jon Pertwee holding Roger Delgado. It's THAT brilliant.
This scene was so emotional,
I think it was the first time we saw the doctor so affected by someone's death. Even for Rose he was not in that state!
Few shows can have the line, "You're not dying, don't be stupid, it's just a bullet."
Even fewer can be serious at this time.
This one manages both.
😂
I love this scene. David Tennant and John Simm's performance made me become an actor. Powerful stuffs man.
It’s really tragic that the Doctor had been dying internally over believing he had killed all Timelords only to find his childhood friend then somewhat lead him to his death.
I love how tragic the character of the Doctor was during Russel T. Davies' era. Always alone, constantly losing even when he won (in the first season he died, in the second season he lost Rose, here he lost what seemed as his only chance of not being the "last Timelord", fouth season he lost Donna and finally he died again).
This scene was so heartbreaking!! You can tell that the Doctor cares so much about the Master... even though he did terrible things. Doctor Who really knows how to mess with your emotions! *cries*
Back here 5 years later and getting all emotional again
I loved Missy, and her lines was funny as hell. But, this will always be my favorite Master. He just had this fun-loving, but scorched-Earth personality. That thumbs-up after "You're insane!" was the epitome of his character.
This scene broke my heart 😢💔 cause he was actual kinda happy not being the only time lord, and having someone to care for that wouldn’t “wither and die” and it would be even better because it was someone he grew up with, someone he knew, someone he truly cared about, and then he died right in his arms and the doctor had no way to stop it, no control over any of it and knowing him he feels like it’s all his fault. Then there’s the fact of no one would like to burn their childhood friend because their dead. For real. Heart. Has. Been. *SHATTERED* 💔💔💔
I really loved this episode! Always when the Master/ Missy is in a story, it makes it so much better.
LL T I know right!
This scene is so.... I fell in love with John Simm. Such a wonderfully twisted, broken, passionate character. Beautifully portrayed. That need to frustrate the Doctor even if it cost him his life as well as being at peace while dying in his arms. Uff. Tennant I already was in love with, so no change there. If an actor could get an award for a scene, this is it. For John Simm. And Tennant, because I just like him.
2:44 onwards. Amazing music
where am i it’s this is gallifrey
0:34 Looking back I'm really happy Moffat let 12 live out this dream even if for only a short while. 12 decided to guard and care for Missy (and teach her to be good) in the Vault. He settled down at the university and (initially) stopped going off world for her (and we’re suggested through bill that this lasted at least 70 years). He even started to change her and she joined the TARDIS crew for a while (that was AMAZING, I still wish we got another series of 12, Bill, Nardole, and Missy as a team). Series 10 never explicitly said this, but 12 must have been so happy to “keep” Missy. I wonder how happy 10 would feel to know he’s able to make this happen eventually (albeit over a thousand years in his future).
2:05 David's acting makes this scene better tenfold. I miss this old era of doctor who (no disrespect to post season 4+)
The music, the acting, the writing, the emotion, the chemistry. It all just bloody brilliant. Tennant was peak doctor who
When the Doctor say "Were the only two left" I hear "Please don't leave me alone".
Such an emotional episode.................the master will always be one of my favorite villains.
And Anti Hero
It's scenes like this that made me fall in love with the show. As a kid, I couldn't really appreciate the history between the two characters, but seeing the bad guy lose - and die - just to spite our hero, and that being portrayed almost as bad as a defeat to us is such a powerful representation of the Doctor and Master's relationship.

How come Francine's been cut from this scene? Her pointing a gun at the Master, only to break down into the Doctor's arms is an amazing bit of writing and acting.

Might I point out that The End of Time puts this into a new context: the Master knew he had a cult ready to resurrect him. So he wasn't just doing this to spite the Doctor but because he knew he'd come back in the future when the Doctor least expected it.
WarGrowlmon18 Well, not JUST to spite the Doctor.
Are you sure he didn't sincerely want to die?
Conquering Mankind and then the rest of the Galaxy had been a _burning ambition_ for most of his life!

I'm eternally grateful that Moffat picked up that thread about the Master being 'kept', a concept which fascinated me, and on which terms they'd accept it.
Though uh... I don't remember it being this heavy on the extreme close ups. Laying on the subtext rather heavily there. Like... more than usual between the Doctor and the Master.
When "This Is Gallifrey" starts playing, my heart hurts. This is probably my least favorite of the RTD-era finales, but the Doctor holding the Master in his arms and sobbing... what a moment.

Why did they cut out the scene where Mrs Jones picks up the gun and tried to shoot the Master?
The doctor really is a great guy, even after everything the master has done to him and the ones he loves, deep down he still cares about his old friend

Let's not pretend we don't notice the glaring hole that has been edited out where Martha's mum threatens the Master with a gun. Wonderful acting by Adjoa Andoh. It's missing from the Netflix versions of Who as it had to be cut down to accomodate adverts.

The Doctor Yeah, that's the choice 12 and 1 had in Twice Upon a Time. They didn't need to let themselves regenerate, they could have chosen to die.
The Doctor The Master was resurrected in End of Time. He's been resurrected and swapped bodies multiple times in Doctor Who history because he's wasted his regenerations. The first time we see him in the Classic series with the Third Doctor is him on his last regeneration.

David’s run was the best as you felt basically every emotion to its fullest
when things was sad you felt like crying
When things was happy you felt really happy
This scene really solidifies how the Master is the Doctor’s antithesis.
The Doctor holds the Master in his arms, begging him to regenerate and live on despite the things he’s done. While the Master refuses, simply because he knows that dying in the Doctor’s arms, leaving him truly alone on the universe, would mean he would get the last laugh.
The Doctor sat there crying, while the Master died smiling.

David Tennant is My Favourite as The Tenth and Fourteenth Doctor in Doctor Who
Mine too
Family of Blood: kill at most 10 people. The Doctor Imprisons them for all eternity
The Master: Decimates the human population. The Doctor "ah lets keep him around"
To be fair, the Family of Blood got to live. The Racnoss straight up got genocided. Just to confirm, the Doctor _dislikes_ genocide, right?
That's because the Doctor has a history with Master, and as far as he knows, they are the only two of their kind left. He hates the things the Master has done, but has love for him in spite of it all.
This is my favourite moment in the Tennant era. And it shows off how great the Doctor/Master relationship is post-Time War.
The Doctor is ready to forgive him for all the terrible things he's done, if only for the sake of having his old friend back and so he's no longer alone.
However, The Master is too far gone and what started out as a rivalry in the Pertwee/Delgado days, turned into a full on war by the Davison/Ainley era. And The Master sees no reason why he should change just because the Time Lords are gone. He's pretty much free to do what he wants and The Doctor doesn't have the guts to beat him as easily anymore.
I know there's a lot of shipping between these two, but this Master HATES The Doctor. He makes it his business to make him suffer as much as possible. Whether leaving him stranded at the end of the universe, making him watch as he decimates the Earth, torturing him and his friends with no intention of letting him die, turning everyone on his favourite/surrogate home planet into copies of himself, Cyber converting his companion or refusing to regenerate so he can live out the rest of his days alone.
That's pure, petty hatred. That's The Master right there.
And yet, when he came back, the Master couldn’t help but return the favor to save the Doctor when the Doctor didn’t shoot him regarding the whole thing with Rassilon
i've had a dream long time ago where i watched this scene but he regenerated

In The End of Time, the Master is reborn, but is sent back to Gallifrey where he was supposed to die with other Time Lords (& Time Lady)...
Skip to The Day of the Doctor, and 11th, 10th, and War Doctors save Gallifrey instead of burning it, which means that the Time Lords & Ladies survived INCLUDING The Master. He then regenerates sometime there, and finally, in season 8, we meet Missy, the regenerated female form of The Master.

I imagine he waited days, weeks even in the TARDIS staring at his corpse, hoping that at some point he'd change his mind and come back. That he's so much more composed at the pyre because he's been crying so long already.
My god, one of the most heartbreaking scenes in all of New Who. Thanks for the upload!
Brilliant acting from Tennant and Simm
2:51 Return of the Jedi was always my favorite Doctor Who episode.
I'm sorry, but I just can't see them bettering or even equally matching this doctor, this writing, this enthusiasm. And the supporting cast are incredible in this era. Everything is perfect. Of course I will watch the new series with the female doctor and give it a neutral, fair try but they ain't beating this.
Craig Warner that's your opinion. Mine is that it was filled with emotional beats and the plot came second. This meant that sometimes it didn't even make sense but the audience were distracted by dem feels that it didn't matter. For example, just a couple minutes before this scene, the doctor magically deages and flies across the room and time gets reversed.
When did you think it's a competition? Every season is a completely different feeling all together. No write of doctor who would actually use this as a template like obviously the story is completely different.
I am more enticed by Capaldi, I have to say. Tennant's emotional developments were incredible though.
I felt that same way about about the 12th Doctor, and then Peter Capaldi absolutely rose to the occasion. Even though we're going into a new era or Doctor Who, I believe Jodie will surprise a lot of people. It's funny, I strongly disliked Capaldi during those first few episodes, and it took Clara getting that phone call from the 11th Doctor, where he basically said he's scared, he needs you, give him a chance, for me to realize that I should give him a chance. I'm glad I did. Now, I'll give Jodie an honest chance.
ObiWan Kenobi I agree moffetts era just got way too complicated. Way too Americanised. Tennant's era with Russell T was when it was still a British show, not over the top, great drama, understated. Everything was just right.
At that point the Doctor knew that he was truly alone in the univers

I love how once he 'died', the song 'this is Gallifrey, our childhood, our home' started playing
How dare they cut off the end of Murray’s score!
Another thing that makes this scene tragic: You've got to remember that the Master isn't _just_ the only other Time Lord left, The Master and the Doctor were FRIENDS. They grew up together. The Master wasn't just a random Time Lord that survived, he was the Doctor's best friend. Imagine that. Your entire race is dead, and then you find out that not only is someone else still alive, but it happens to be your childhood friend. And all this was wonderfully brought back with Missy's incarnation.
Another thing Chibnall ruined.
He didn’t want to regenerate because Missy would’ve came thru and stole the show 😂
The master has "died" so many times before this. And AFTER this for that matter lol
This was an epic finale, definitely on my top five.
Imagine that someone who was once your friend decides to die before spending a lifetime with you. Just to get on your nerves, no wonder the Tennant Doctor gets more tired and emotional which each season.

1:23 And don't forget The Autons, The Nestene, Sea Devils, Kronos, Cybermen, Ogrons, Bok The Gargoyle, Azal, and The Keller Machine.
The Doctor was PLEADING with the Master to stay. Just imagine being the last of your people and you lose one more making you truly alone…
I still hate that they cut out the bit with Martha's mum AGAIN
I swear these videos have already been uploaded onto the channel
Oliver Linklater right
You probably saw them on the "TheOncomingStorm" channel.
One of the best clips of David's reign as the doctor.
I had the chance to meet Anthony Ainley at a very small con and he was the nicest man. But alas, even though he told me I was lovely and handed me his champagne while on stage.... Simm is my favorite. Though Michelle as Missy did win me over after thinking she was just going to be another woke joke. She is a close second to Simm.
Master: "Always the women.."
Enter Missy seven years later, killing people on whim.
David Tennant was such a brilliant actor as Doctor. I fear noone will ever get even close to what he did with that character. When he was gone from the show I could never watch it from there on.
To face death out of spite.
Isn't stopping Regeneration basically the same as trying to stop yourself from breathing? AKA impossible? I mean, I'm pretty sure that in the Classic series the Doctor Regenerated at least a few times while unconcious, and once while he was declared clinically dead for crying out loud :/
catxborsuq1 Here , after this scène , he regenerated , because Missy in season 8-9-10
He regenerated into Missy for totally different reason
He was ressurected, avoiding going to prison and wasting a regeneration.
Cunning Smile It' not my point. Whether he had really planned this or not (and the way its portrayed suggest he didn't), my point is that you cannot stop Regeneration
Did you WATCH Twice Upon a Time? 😳 A Time Lord CAN control their regenerations. They hold back the energy with everything they've got. Prolonged activity while holding back the energy tell a the body they choose to keep going.
0:15 The Master acting like he didnt keep the Doctor in a cage for years💀
Why did the cut the whole scene of Marthas mum holding the gun at the Master?
It took a while, but the Doctor kept his promise of keeping an eye on the Master.
