    The last few review ETA did on Fire HD tablets unfortunately left out some crucial info or were even kinda incorrect in places: Models since 2018 have had their firmware locked. This means "we cannot fully block OTAs, use custom launchers without Fire Launcher, lockscreen ads can no longer be permanantly removed, and some system apps can't be disabled." (quote from dev of Fire Toolbox). This theoretically even means that any day Amazon could push an update that cannot be fully blocked and that might make all the things Fire Toolbox can do, not work anymore. And one more info that I wish someone had told be before buying: The damn thing can only do FAT32! You can't even play a video file of over 4GB on it. The screen and sound really blew me away, but those things are too much of a hassle and risk for me to really recommend it tbh.

      I got the exact same model last year and I had the ads removed and PlayStore installed through the device, all I needed was wifi. It took me about five minutes.

    • @TheEgoBizarro
      @TheEgoBizarro 6 месяцев назад

      @@ringwe Yeah, you can still do that (at the mercy of Amazon until they decide to push an update to kill fire tools completely), but some things you can't do anymore (see quote above). E.g. you cannot remove the Fire Launcher anymore, you can only basically display another launcher over it (which produces a lot of little annoyances, though).

      It does say ads cannot be permanently removed, but since the last time I updated firetoolbox, my hd10+, and removed ads again, I haven't had them reload since. It used to reload ads every time wifi connected after going to sleep, but it's been about 3 months now with no ads coming back.

You should do some reviews on budget tablets such as doogee, Teclast, Blackview, or some really out there rebranded rebrands like this "POWMUS" tablet I just picked up off Amazon for $110. It appears to be a rebranded blackview running android 13, 1080p, t606, 8GB RAM+7GB swap, 128GB internal which tested at 750MB/s read and 350MB/s write, SD slot claims it's good for 2tb, 1tb confirmed.

Like i said, for wjat I use it for - RUclips, Netflix, Prime, etc. it works grest. I also really like reading comics on it which was a selling point for me. This was all on the prior model. I did buy a 23 version on monday for the $80 price tag which is again, good.

    I wonder why they abandoned the Fire 10 Plus in favor of the new form factor Fire Max 11. The chassis can hold a bit larger battery, but the increased resolution is going to drop it right back down. I have the 2021 Fire 10 Plus that has 4GB of RAM and I've liked it quite a bit. It plays the couple of games I want, streams video fine and can playback 720/1080 H.264 10-bit video with subtitles just fine via VLC. It does feel sluggish during some web browsing, but that's rarely something I do on it.
    I know it was built down to a price, but a couple features I'd appreciate for future models would be a decent speed fast charge option like most modern portable devices offer, and USB 3 or 3.1 speeds for the data port. If I'm loading up the SD card with media, I can save a lot of time by removing the card and putting it in a faster card reader which is just a hassle. Wifi 6/6e would be nice, but that's probably coming as the Fire Max 11 has it.
    Fire OS does worry me a bit though, as they never offer the newer versions for older hardware, and they're based on older versions of Android. These newer ones on Fire OS 8 are based off of Android 11 and the older ones on Fire OS 7 are based on Android 9 which isn't maintained any more. It's not a problem immediately, but it's possible that newer apps and games in the near future won't install as the OS dropped off the supported range.
    Still, we're talking about an $80-100 10" tablet with decent specs and even cheaper if you have an older Fire tablet to trade in, so all the stuff above is "grains of salt" rather than critical flaws that will concern most folks... but something I'd want to be rectified fore more expensive hardware.

    I really do think that if Amazon would bump up the RAM just a little and switch to more of an Android skin instead of the FireOS fork they've been doing, these tablets would be some of the best you could get (though if the rumors are true their own non-Android OS is coming soon and destroying all hope). My Fire HD 8 from 2022 is awesome for the most part, but the 2GBs of memory cause random app crashes and make using a password manager a real hassle. You can't really complain because the price is so good, but I can't help but wish I had something with a bit more juice.

    For secondary tablet for kids or parents/elderly relatives I really recommend looking at Certified Refurbished HD 10 2021 model which sells for 65-68$. It's basically the same performance wise ( -has 1GB less RAM- and slightly weaker CPU) but for media tablet it doesn't matter that much. 2021 model handles h265 10 bit encoded videos smoothly (unlike HD8 2020) - that's the main benchmark for me personally, since this encoding becomes more and more popular.
    Nevertheless, 80$ for a new model is a good deal.

    • @cryengine_x
      @cryengine_x 6 месяцев назад +6

      except the cpu isnt slightly weaker in that last gen model it's significantly weaker. about half the geekbench scores for example.
      shame this couldn't squeeze in 4gb ram but i get it for 80 dollars.
      also i think youre confused. hd 10 2021 on a quick google had 3gb ram, same as this new 2023 model. you might be thinking of the fire Max 11, which has the same more powerful CPU as this HD10 2023, but has 4GB RAM instead of 3GB, metal construction, but costs more.
      in summary: Fire HD 10 last gen=crappy old Helio P60T CPU+3GB RAM, Fire HD 10 2023=better G90 CPU, still 3GB RAM, Fire max 11=G90 CPU, 4GB RAM.
      BTW for ETA if he reads this, I believe the word is Amazon is developing their own OS, not Android based, for their fire products and everything they make. What that will mean for Google play store sideloading support, I dont know but I would assume theres no chance of it. Which would probably make Amazon happy as it's more money for them as all purchases would have to go through them.

    • @sarmatiko
      @sarmatiko 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@cryengine_x you are correct about the same amount of RAM. As for the "crappy" CPU - as I said, it's mainly a media tablet, focused on media content. 2021 handles it well and that is all that is required. Even with G90, 2023 is still not a gaming tablet (and I'm pretty sure parents who will buy it as such will disappoint their kids).
      Personally I don't see any reason to upgrade from previous models, but if Amazon in six months will add refurbished listings with 2023 model for ~65$, then sure, why not.

      A few years ago I repented to God then begged for help, "I was until then an Atheist."
      I then had a dream of Jesus coming before God and he spoke of the Tabernacle in perfect context, "A word I didn't know existed.", and what I felt from Jesus when I held him was unlike anything I've ever felt before - A lifetime of Love every second - It brought me to sobbing and it changed my life, forever.
      I've had Many experiences since, "Several witnessed", one was seeing a bright orb of light pass across my face in the dark, hours before a major surgery the second I gave up in my heart.
      Know that God and Jesus ARE real and that they Love us deeply. Let go of your hatred and Imagine yourself holding the people who've hurt you. Tell them you Love them.
      Always have hope, I believe that prayer, following God's laws & Love is the answer, and through that, Truly becoming humble, merciful, welcoming, giving, gentle, respectful, compassionate, patient, kind and forgiving, To All.

    I wish you'd have tested PS2 emulation with AetherSX2. On paper this Fire Tab Gen 13's Mediatek 8186A SoC compares pretty evenly with the Unisoc Tiger T618 that's found in a number of recent handhelds. The Tiger can run a decent chunk of the PS2 library, so why not this SoC too?
    Both SoCs use a 2+6 configuration. However; this Mediatek uses newer "big" cores compared to the Unisoc. The 8186A has A76s per this video vs. A75s in the T618, clocked at around 2GHz on both units. Meanwhile the 6 "small" A55 cores here are clocked 200MHz higher than the T618's. Now when it comes to Mali GPUs, admittedly, I don't know much. However, both are running variants of the Mali G52, so, I'd assume there's not that much difference between the two.
    Is there any reason why this can't run Aether? I know one shouldn't go buy this tablet for higher end emulation any more than you should buy an Anbernic RG405 or Retroid Pocket 3+ for the same thing. However; comfirmed abilites to do some PS2 at a high level would've been an extra feather in its hat, just like it is for those aforementioned handhelds.
    As it is; this was still a very useful video because I thought Amazon was still rolling with the 12th gen Fire 10. I learned something new today. Thanks again, ETA. Your coverage of "value priced" items is a large part of why I stay subscribed to this channel.

      I have the Fire Max 11 which has a better processor (A78 vs A76 or A75) than either the Fire 10 2023 or the T618 it also has a better GPU (MC57MP2 vs MC52MP2) and yet games (android or emulator) run about the same or WORSE than the T618! This is especially noticeable on the Citra emulator. The emulator says the game is running at 60fps at 1x and full speed yet it runs like molasses. The same game on the supposedly weaker T618 runs silky smooth even upscaled! I think it's a GPU driver issue (hopefully it's not throttling!) and we all know Amazon doesn't care about those fixes. They only 'update' to block any attempts at using third party apps to remove ads or customize the launcher. The IPlay 50 Pro fullsize or mini is the MUCH better deal and the best tablet(s) you can get right now under 200 USD.

    I think that Fire Devices are a waste of $$ at any price. You get an outdated version of Android and the tablets can be slow. Having to use the Fire Toolbox is just another negative. That said, I can understand why people get one, like to give to the kids or to use for uses like a Kiosk where these breaking is not a concern due to price. For me, I would rather have something else because the only things of note you can do with one is Music, video, eBooks, and web browsing. Another issue I have is that Amazon sells both an ad supported discount version and a more premium version without ads. MAKE SURE if you're getting a Fire Tablet that you do the one without ads.

    $80 feels like the RRP it ought to be. Android 11 base seems a little odd now that 14 is here. But going into 2024 there is one feature that should be present on all touch screen devices, video out. When you have options like Samsung A7 at a similar price but much better performance, for me that’s the better option. Additionally you actually get android OS and not Amazon’s rubbish gui, and PlayStore without jumping through hoops, so native access to all apps, not just the ones Amazon chooses.
      On my sons Kindle 8HD that I bought last year, it is so slow, that even I want to through it out the window when I need to access it for parental controls. Games constantly crash or are laggy. It’s just a rubbish device sold really cheaply so people then think it’s acceptable, but of course there are subscriptions to then pay if you don’t want to be bombarded with ads or want any device control.
      I bought 2 of these for my kids for this Christmas, but think I’ll return them and get the A7’s instead, when I think about it.
