Bought the refurbished Fire HD 10.1 regular or 2021edition due to how impressed I was with the older Fire Tab 8. This FireHD 10.1 is worth all that. Out performing my LenovaM8 , Samsung Tab E and a few others off more money by half. I'm running the media stream 12 hours a day past week since buying for 74$ and so far no issues. The best test to test a tablet s worth is to go far away from wi fi like I have and run every tablet to see how much it will lag or studder. The other Tablets studder every 20 minutes and lose signal every 8 minutes while the FireHD10.1 2021 model is not even stuttering and yet to lose signal since using far away from wi fi module, and this is refurbished but it's like brand new condition and the ADs only on wake up screen but not annoying , rather cool to see the resolution of ads as it is true HD 1080p which not too many small screen devices use , even TV s of 32inch and lower. Tablet should be Best Buy Tablet of the year.
It has been a couple of months since buying the 🔥 HD10.1 of testing the tablet on 10 to 12 hrs straight of streaming and using apps. Tablet passed this test with no issues 😁. I have 5 other brand tablets and the 🔥 is the one I use overall so don't be shy to buy, you can always return it on the 30 day return if tablet don't fit your needs of using. Im using it a lot as I'm preparing to watch the NFL ticket season via tablet.
32gb version is down to $90 for prime day! Snagged it along with a 3 year accident warranty for under $120. Beside it being my "dad tablet," I figure the kids can hook this up between the headrests in our van, connect it to the stereo, and then we have a diy entertainment system for our basic van. They have their own tablets already, but theres just something about a movie with surround sound that really keeps their attention.
For PS1 use the standalone versions of either ePSXe, FPse or Duckstation (this one particularly do upscaling very well). For GC use the custom Dolphin MMJR.
Yeah. I bet the standalone Duckstation works really well on this. It is supposed to work well on lower ended hardware and this is hardly low end. If N64 runs great, the PlayStation emulators should run great. It sounds like there is hardware acceleration considering the android games run so well. Unfortunately, there is no HDMI out on this tablet. There does seem to be a way to mirror the display onto a TV through streaming. Amazon does not support it for some reason. I hope it does not have significant lag. It is really irritating that they did that. This could have been a great alternative to the Raspberry Pi.
Yes, a high end tablet review would be interesting. I've got an old Nvidia Shield K1 that I've been dabbling with but it's showing its age now. It would be interesting to see emulation performance on a newer Galaxy Tab
this was awesome! great job and your video is way more informative than I expected. Not only did it give great retro gaming content but also showed me how to setup my Fire 10Hd 👍
I’m watching this on Thanksgiving day 2021 because the Fire HD 2021 is $75 and HD+ is $105. For that kind of value, I’m all in. Russ put out a community post to alert the RGC squad of this deal and linked this video. What a bro!
Retro games that were made for CRTs don't look so good on big LCD screens. I feel like 5-6 inches is the optimum LCD size for picture quality and visibility.
I've been researching tablets for emulation and just to take some wear off my phone and this video popped up. Great video. I subscribed to your channel.
Do you think the ipega PG-9167 would work ? I was thinking of getting a Steam Deck. But after seeing this video I'll save more money and have fun. Thank you for making these video.
Word of warning, I've repaired lots of older fire tables. They wouldn't last a year, mainly due to the charger ports being extremely weak. I would replace a lot of the charging ports which require micro soldering. Now I've only done the older fires with micro USB, so the new USB C ones might be better but I'm not sure. Just a warning if they randomly won't turn on or stop charging.
This one has wireless charging too, something else to consider. Whether it fails or not, just an extra variable. I kind of want to wait until they get thinner bezels. I think that may be a while.
Have an Nvidia Shield K1 that's still running without issues, but you're right - the charging port is a little stiff so its a weakness. Decent in its day and similar internals to a Switch but few games are optimised for the Tegra processor now, and the battery life sucks. A lack of RAM makes it laggy , but I still have a soft spot for mine
@@acumenium8157 Sorry to hear you've had such a shitty experience with the Shield. I have to admit, I don't use mine much for gaming so haven't pushed it hard enough to encounter the overheating but it sounds like a worry. As you say, the CPU is unbalanced versus the GPU, and I really think it needed more RAM. I've found most Android tablets (had an ASUS Transformer before this) to be very laggy and requiring regular factory resets. I always put this down to bloatware and a lack of tablet hardware optimisation, but maybe newer Android versions/hardware are better. My son's 2019 Fire tablet runs butter smooth by comparison
@Timon: I don't know.... a lot this may just be down to rough handling from users and their kids..... I've had a Fire 10 HD for the past 3 years at least and it's still perfectly fine with charging (it's always been painfully slow though!!), and works as it should..... I hardly use it now; just keep it charged-up, as I prefer my iPad Pro 11" for general use when I'm not using my MacBook Air (2015). The Fire tablets seem pretty robust and well built, and I'd guess that breakages are from people jamming the micro-USB connector in upside down, and maybe their kids doing likewise... USB-C on these newer versions will remove a lot of these dumb user issues...!! You can't make everything idiot-proof, but USB-C may help... ;-)
FYI, Fire Toolbox will not work with the latest version 7.3.2.2 of the Fire OS. If you want to do this make sure you disable the wifi on your tablet as soon as you get it to stop it updating.
I've been told a couple times that this is the same music, it's a happy coincidence! I didn't ever listen/watch the old show, although I read a lot of Engadget back in the day. The only podcast I really listened to back then was the Joystiq podcast, that was a lot of fun.
You definitely get more power for the money. I use my 8bitdo arcade stick with Bluetooth. I never liked gamepads anyway going back to my NES days to now. I prefer this combination for portable purposes and travel.
I actually got the Fire HD 10 during the black friday sales (albeit as a low budget graphics tablet) and wondered what you could game on there. I had been using Parsec for over 2 years now to play games with friends but never came up with using it to stream my screen onto a different device of mine. It really works great but the tablet gets a little warm overtime. I hope that's normal and that I can still use it for a good while then
If you have an old fire, i found out it's the perfect 16bit emulator. It does run some ds and n64 games, but they're really slow and clunky. Definitely would recommend for gba and below.
I've used the Kindle Fire Tablet 7 (2019) for almost 2 years. It plays all the games up until Dreamcast with little hiccups. Unfortunately, the issue is carrying and extra controller and the tablet. Also trying to play games using the touch screen as a controller. Too much. I bought an RG351P last month and never touched my tablet since. Conclusion, better to have a device, with both a screen and controller in 1 for portability. Love my kindle, but without a controller than the games won't be as enjoyable (except maybe RPG's).
RGC: Worried about shutting off amazon ads on tablet, didn't want to do anything illegal Also RGC:Illegally downloads hundreds of game roms to play on tablet
I think if you need a tablet for other reasons and you happen to have a controller, the this is a great solution for portable gaming. Unless, of course, you gave other portable consoles. But with prices on some of the portable retro consoles out there that are less than 50, it's hard to say that carrying around a tablet and a controller and awkwardly placing both to play games is really ideal in any shape or fashion. Good to know that this option exists though.
As of yesterday, my brand new Fire Tablet 10hd plus 2021 cannot use Firetoolbox. It came pre-installed with a version of Fire OS that they have not cracked yet
I have this tablet and I tried N64 emulation and was really surprised it runs it well. I know the limitations of this tablet and I honestly thought it wouldn't be able to run it.
Great review as always, thank you! I like the tablet and have one that's a gen or two back now...can't remember but it's older and showing it's age. What's wild is my iPad Mini 4 destroys this across the board and because I got it used (3.5 years ago now) I didn't pay much more than this thing cost new. I really wish Apple would allow emulation because their chipsets are amazing.
Idk if anyones will see this but i got a fire hd 10,11th gen at a thrift store. I was able to get Nethersx2 up and running ps2 games with ddips to 40fps. Pretty neat for a $20 find
It's a shame that Amazon didn't upgrade the processor in this new version. Still the exact same processor that was in the 2019 model... MT8183 is pretty slow...
@@tippingdipping4657 you can download fire toolbox on your pc, connect your tablet, open up fire toolbox and there is a setting on there to disable over the air updates.
Hey, any plans on doing a review of the fire hd 8+ variant? it has 3gb memory and I wonder if that's enough for smooth gameplay. As these will mostly be bought for kids, the 10" display might be a bit too large and heavy for continous gameplay of small kids, assuming it's without a controller (until they grow up a little more)
@5:53 Amazon is a billion dollar company and utilizes its tech to listen, record, and surveil our every purchase/action through their devices. Yeah I disabled ads, and felt no remorse.
Did something similar to my Galaxy Tab S3. More expensive, but I already had it laying around. Playing DS games with the stylus pen is an amazing experience Edit: ePSXe is preferable to running PS1 through Retroarch, just imo
thank you for this great video! I was thinking about streaming my xbox series x on this. Two questions: is it possible to stream developer mode? ...and can you connect two controllers for co-op play? Keep up the great work!
Dead easy to do, just contact Amazon via the web and say you bought the wrong one , they will remove the ads for free ,after a little conversation, say that it’s a hassle to return it and that it’s a gift for your elderly mother , works a treat
Russ, thanks for the very informative review! Pardon my potential noob questions; have you attempted casting to a FireTV device and have you attempted any of the multiplayer emulators on this device?
I travel a fair bit for work (potentially spending all but 20-30 days in 6 months in a hotel) so something like this combined with leaving my computer on at home seems like a better alternative than having tro spend £500+ on a gaming laptop to take with me
If I could find a quality telescopic controller I could attach to a tablet this size and it would run off of the tablets USB connector I would definitely buy one for my retro gaming device.
I want to get a tablet for portable retro gaming more than a handheld device because it's going to be a lot better for 2-4 player gaming. I want to get a nice case that holds the tablet, a stand, and all the accessories I need + controllers. Pop-up arcade!
@@TheComemnter the Wii was innovative. Perhaps Nintendo's only intelligent and entertaining console, for the rest nothing new, in fact they have been making money from Mario for 40 years.
I think it needs to be at Fire HD 12 to be able to be perfect for the games that won't work great unless they are lowered. I find it great that N64 and Dreamcast wotk great but i think you lowered the resolution if I remember correctly. People like me need plug and play with everything automatically knowing how to naturally run at the correct speed and resolution which should be at 1080p. 720p is even great. If the next version can do all of that and play pc android games without needing internet then I would buy it. Can you do me a favor and see if Haunt the house terrortown works on this or tell me what handheld will play it perfectly. I don't know how to do any of this and have no computer. I just need someone to set it all up for me and fully test it and then sell me it. Nothing complicated.

You don't need to run PSP games at 3 x resolution when performance takes a hit.
Just stick to 2 x and that would be enough
Just got me a plus model for prime day can’t wait to test it out
32gb version is down to $90 for prime day!
You sold me with that psp performance.
Love the work you do. I would love to see an emulation "stress test" on a higher end tablet like the Galaxy S7
Yes, a high end tablet review would be interesting. I've got an old Nvidia Shield K1 that I've been dabbling with but it's showing its age now. It would be interesting to see emulation performance on a newer Galaxy Tab
Me, with the samsung galaxy s7, the PHONE. Hmmm high end, yeah
Picked one of these up on a lightning deal for $109.99 a little over a year ago. Amazing value!!
this was awesome! great job and your video is way more informative than I expected. Not only did it give great retro gaming content but also showed me how to setup my Fire 10Hd 👍
Great video; I'm sold on it being my replacement for my broken Galaxy Tab.
Love your content, Russ. Would you consider branching out and covering SBCs, mini PCs, and Android TV Boxes since they are also used for retro gaming?
Thank you for testing Nights into Dreams. How any device can handle that game in particular tells me everything I pretty much need to know.
I’m watching this on Thanksgiving day 2021 because the Fire HD 2021 is $75 and HD+ is $105. For that kind of value, I’m all in.
Russ put out a community post to alert the RGC squad of this deal and linked this video. What a bro!
Same I might buy it
Retro games that were made for CRTs don't look so good on big LCD screens. I feel like 5-6 inches is the optimum LCD size for picture quality and visibility.
Oh buddy! I’d love to see more content on this one. Thanks, Russ! Have a great weekend.
I use duck station for PSONE and have zero issues so far
Thanks for this dude, you totally vindicated my purchase!! Merry Christmas!
I've been researching tablets for emulation and just to take some wear off my phone and this video popped up. Great video. I subscribed to your channel.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for the video exactly what I was looking for! The non plus version is on sale here now for £80 so hard to go wrong
I bought this recently....i would say its the best value tablet for your money
I agree, it's got a lot of nice value to it!
Do you think the ipega PG-9167 would work ? I was thinking of getting a Steam Deck. But after seeing this video I'll save more money and have fun. Thank you for making these video.
Also, thanks for the bonus Playstore tutorial! Wasn't even expecting that... I smashed all your buttons.
PlayStation emulators does not work on tablets.
Thanks, bud, you just convinced my lady to pick me up one on fire day ;)
Word of warning, I've repaired lots of older fire tables.
I think that may be a while.
i feel like that's micro usb in general.....these usb c ports are a lot more reliable
You can't make everything idiot-proof, but USB-C may help... ;-)
I picked this up for my son as a trade in for $50. Have to send his 2018 HD 10. I think that's a good deal. He plays minecraft and Roblox mostly
finally a 64-bit processor!!
FYI, Fire Toolbox will not work with the latest version 7.3.2.2 of the Fire OS. If you want to do this make sure you disable the wifi on your tablet as soon as you get it to stop it updating.
The 10 Google Stadia users left are probably delighted to hear they can use it with this tablet
ha
Such a neat and tidy and informative review keeping it real and intelligent. Very well done
Thanks so much!
The old Engadget show theme gets me every time
I've been told a couple times that this is the same music, it's a happy coincidence!
I hope that's normal and that I can still use it for a good while then
Very viable. It’s not just for gaming but everything else.
This is the exact video I Truly needed to see
Glad it helped!
@@RetroGameCorps you know how to turn off auto updates ?
If you spend an extra £20 at purchase you can get it without ads.
Prime day is coming up and it could be on at £/$100.
Thank you for this video!! New subscriber!
Nicely done sir! Subbed.
If you have an old fire, i found out it's the perfect 16bit emulator.
It does run some ds and n64 games, but they're really slow and clunky. Definitely would recommend for gba and below.
Black Friday Baby!!! $104.99 Woot!! Woot!!
I will say it's surprised me on how well it performed
It's quite a steal for its price, really. 2021 is pretty awesome in some ways :)
RGC: Worried about shutting off amazon ads on tablet, didn't want to do anything illegal
Also RGC:Illegally downloads hundreds of game roms to play on tablet
you know how to turn off auto updates ?
🤫🤫🤫 Now the price will go up!
Ssshhh, the scalpers can hear us.
You can connect it to a monitor/tv via hdmi with no trouble, just get the right cable.
Unfortunately it's not the cable. The port/board itself is not capable of video out.
You better not turn off those ads! WINK WINK
It is your civic duty to get root on all subsidized hardware.
I have this tablet and I tried N64 emulation and was really surprised it runs it well. I know the limitations of this tablet and I honestly thought it wouldn't be able to run it.
Oh, someone installed Lineage OS on the amazon tablets! I'd look into doing something like that for a little better performance.
3ds is the system I wanted to see!!! ARRHHG!
thank you for the video.
No doubt they're milking the upgrades. But the extra memory is a good start.
you know how to turn off auto updates ?
@@tippingdipping4657 you can download fire toolbox on your pc, connect your tablet, open up fire toolbox and there is a setting on there to disable over the air updates.
@@OOICU812 Compared to the 2017 one its a night and day difference. Regardless it scores 5000+ on geek bench 4 that's solid.
Hey, any plans on doing a review of the fire hd 8+ variant? it has 3gb memory and I wonder if that's enough for smooth gameplay.
As these will mostly be bought for kids, the 10" display might be a bit too large and heavy for continous gameplay of small kids, assuming it's without a controller (until they grow up a little more)
Great video, interesting device!.. thanks ✌️😁
I just bought a HD 10 Plus 4 GB and it was $99 with a discount trade in of $20 on a 8" Fire because it would no longer boot.
Excellent review. Subbed.
@5:53
Amazon is a billion dollar company and utilizes its tech to listen, record, and surveil our every purchase/action through their devices.
Yeah I disabled ads, and felt no remorse.
Use an Ipega bluetooth telescopic controller and make a large screen hand held.
Did something similar to my Galaxy Tab S3. More expensive, but I already had it laying around. Playing DS games with the stylus pen is an amazing experience
Edit: ePSXe is preferable to running PS1 through Retroarch, just imo
I did the same with mine! Sure, it can’t play the latest mobile games well, but it can surprisingly emulate N64, Gamecube, and even DC games.
thank you for this great video! I was thinking about streaming my xbox series x on this. Two questions: is it possible to stream developer mode? ...and can you connect two controllers for co-op play? Keep up the great work!
If I own the device, then I have the right to remove ads regardless of the EULA.
Great video what's the controller called
Great video, thanks. So would you say that the 64gb option is unnecessary and that an SD card can do the same job for cheaper?
There may be reasons to upgrade to the 64, but for my situation , think it’s totally necessary. I got the 32 and a microSD for extra storage.
I travel a fair bit for work (potentially spending all but 20-30 days in 6 months in a hotel) so something like this combined with leaving my computer on at home seems like a better alternative than having tro spend £500+ on a gaming laptop to take with me
I think Yaba Sanshiro only recognized the internal memory, so you can't put the ROM on SD card.
I wonder if older versions of Yaba Sanshiro allow external storage. From what I gather, it's an Android 11 thing but this tablet run Android 9.
If I could find a quality telescopic controller I could attach to a tablet this size and it would run off of the tablets USB connector I would definitely buy one for my retro gaming device.
That would be awesome, but unfortunately I don't think there's one available yet.
I tend to be particular about my drawer style.
I want to get a tablet for portable retro gaming more than a handheld device because it's going to be a lot better for 2-4 player gaming. I want to get a nice case that holds the tablet, a stand, and all the accessories I need + controllers. Pop-up arcade!
Just a warning: You can't get any Nintendo consoles from GameCube and above.
PlayStation 2 is also not available.
@@TheComemnter not a big loss.

@@paullawson3558 I liked the Wii console. That’s about it.
@@TheComemnter the Wii was innovative.
Perhaps Nintendo's only intelligent and entertaining console, for the rest nothing new, in fact they have been making money from Mario for 40 years.
I have a Chuwi HiPad X with the same CPU, I have to use my Snapdragon 720G phone to play some GameCube games.
I hope the next HD 10 Plus will have 6GB or 8GB RAM running on Android 12
This still works as of the end of 2023. Note: skip the custom launcher step, it's pointless.
Wish they would slim those bezels down, not seen bezels that big since the blackberry playbook.
