This is why I'm waiting to turn on my June 2023 updated 8.3 Kindle HD 10. Nabbed it from work. Its in the tablet graveyard until I can hack it into a regular android tablet. The bloatware is incredible. Thats fine for sheeple but not for people who like to control the content of the devices they use. Not to mention the RAM being eaten up by the bloatware and ads SIGNIFICANTLY reduces performance on these tablets. Such a shame.

For those that find there way here. This is a very well done tutorial, albeit a little dated, but still mostly relevant. There are a few changes / updates. The Fire Tool Box still works like a charm, now updated to V30.2! It now has more features, more launchers, etc. AND you can get rid of alot more Amazon installed "stuff" that's installed by default. And you can customize more also. For example the whole navigation (you know the buttons at the bottom of tablets), can be 100% Android look AND feel. You can even customize the nav to Apple feel, if you're an Apple OS kinda person. A Last note, if you are doing this for the first time.. DONT BE AFRAID to do these steps or even play around with different launchers and customizations, you WONT BREAK anything. This tool will allow you to go back and make changes to "things" you've done easily. In about 15 mins I have my Fire HD 10 looking and working just like my other Android tablets without ANY hint of Amazon on it.
I agree. this was a good turorial! however, I followed all of the instructions and i saw that there are some changes with the new V30.2 which weren't too troublesome, but the next day I had a bunch of amazon apps back on my homescreen after it automatically did some update. Under settings/developer options/ I have "Automatic system updates" turned off. Any ideas on what i may have missed or done wrong?
I bought four of the previous Fire HD 10's when they were on sale for $100 for myself and family. Great budget, tossable devices, especially for media consumption. The XDA community has really been great for this line of tablets. Can't wait for these new ones to drop in price like the previous ones did!
Can you answer a quick question for me please , I have always done most of this manually and never used this tool before and I never debloated , so if you use the standard option in the debloater does it disable/ break the hands free Alexa or show mode features? basically I want to get rid of everything except Amazon app store, Alexa hands free, and show mode and the smart home control menu in the nav bar will this tool do that?

I was disappointed when I bought them the Amazon tablets and found that I could not download the app. With this upgrade they have them on their tablets and we can take our walks with a little entertainment. Just went through your tutorial, much better than most. The only problems I had was the OS level did not let me a few things like the the ad blocker. The Fire tool version was a bit different, but they gave you links to work a rounds. Thanks for your handy work.

@@pickleeggs3340 i have an iPad Air 2 here, and because i love sideloading and have no extra papers to pay for apps, i’m piss by this shit os as well, sideloading is mostly temporary because the apps once got their certificate revoked are gone, i’m on the 14.6 version too which mean i can’t fucking jailbreak without a computer, and trust me if i have a computer this iPad is going to the dump

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! Finally, a step-by-step procedure that actually works. There are so many BS videos where the menu options do not even appear on the tablet because they are designed for older versions even though they falsely claim the work on the Fire 10 (11th version). I was finally able to install and use Google Maps after watching several worthless videos.

yeah I second that, sure it wasn't easy but the videos are well put together... Only wish I could get there some day but I have a hard time grabbing peoples attention but I will get better sooner or later. It fun to make videos, I have always like being creative and my current 9 to 5 doesn't give me the opportunity. I got distracted from what was important to me, let graphic design get pushed to the side and I miss creating so I am trying to snap back! Glad to see other succeeding because it gives me the confidence to keep trying.

If you bought a Fire Tablet during Black Friday 2021 or after, do not connect it to WiFi or allow any updates to happen before running the toolkit. The newest version is not yet supported by the toolkit (read the forum's last few pages too see a lot of people talking about this).
@@tosvus do a factory reset and then follow the steps on the toolbox page. I did the same thing and it wouldn't work, I factory reset it and followed the steps and it works fine.
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU! I was going crazy because my Fire HD 10 wasn’t being detected on the Fire Toolbox. It’s because I was using the usb cable that came with the Fire. Again, THANK YOU!!!
I did the initial tablet configuration using Fire Toolbox using another USB-C cable because I had read this, but I successfully did a subsequent adjustment using the included USB-C cable and was successful. At 4:21, ETA PRIME says, "... we're going to plug it in using the included USB type C cable."
Maybe a stupid question what did they do to it to make it only work as a charging plug? I have never seen any USB-C cables that say they are just for charging only.
Just a suggestion, but you may want to add that after you enable usb debugging, some users may have to also choose "Default USB Configuration" and choose "File Transfer" as well as use a c-type cable that is a charging AND data cable, not just a charging cable ( usually the more expensive ones for like 10 bucks or so or it will say "data" on its packaging. The reason I mention this , is because usb configuration by default, is set to "No Data Transfer" which will cause some pc's the inability to read the device connected to it. This information was SO HELPFUL!! I got a new Fire Amazon 10 and didn't realize it didn't come with Chrome or Google Play! I was panicking because the apps I needed to download can only be downloaded in Google Play. I had a little bit of challenge downloading the app, but it's because my options on my desktop didn't look exactly like yours. I figured it out and walla! I got er done! Thank you SO much!
OMG Thank you!!!! I hated the set up with the Fire Tablet. I love my Android set up so this was a no brainer. It was also so simple and you were precise in your instructions and made it super easy for beginners.
2023 sadly this guide no longer works, the interface has changed and so have permissions and Fire Tablet firmware. However, I managed to get Google Play and Book store installed. I picked up a white Certified Refurbished 10 inch tablet for £135 I was tempted to wait another eight days to see if they went down in price, but because the white version was limited stock, I decided to go and order, and then wait for Prime day and if they go down in price, then I can send this one back and buy another cheaper, but the white versions might have all gone. I just tried one ebook which is the reason why I wanted the tablet for and it is fantastic. So much better than trying to read on my Pixel phone. You can get cheaper tablets same size for a lot less, but some of the bad reviews put me off buying one, as one review said about the charger blowing up in his daughters face when she turned it on. I have just tried RUclips and I used Costa Rica 4K and the quality is (swear words) fantastic, I also had to go old school and play Tiffany I think we are alone now and the sound quality is very good, not tinny as some people say it is. I was looking at the new Google tablet, but at £700 so £566 more expensive, this is well worth it, especially if you can it in a colour that you want. I am sick of just black devices which is why I brought this one, white tablets matter, take the knee people.
Bought my daughter the HD8 for christmas. Followed the steps and it worked, thankyou ! Had a few issues with DL'ing the google services but after a few restarts it worked fine.

Got the same tablet, followed the steps and when I get to connect tablet to pc (Windows7), cant download drivers, Usb only charge the tablet. KFONWI device with question Mark in device manager... Tried few ways to install it update, no chance. Nothing.. Is there anything I could do to Fix sort it?
Amazon Prime Day is coming up in 3 weeks (June 21) and Amazon will often have their tablets on sale sometimes the day before even. The HD10 was $150 and dropped to $80 last Prime Day
i tried this on my fire 7 tablet 2019 version and it works my advice dont update and dont sign in your amazon account it works like a android tablet thanks for this ETA prime
@Clarissa 1986 that is the risk, for sure. Just like using ad blocker on RUclips... However, I'm willing to bet (with my literal money) that Amazon would never do this. What's also important to remember is that, you bought the hardware that "is" the tablet. It's your hardware to do what you want! Amazon takes a risk by using hardware that they did not engineer to build a tablet to run their software (which is also on the backs of open source Linux software). Trust me, they get enough people to put up with ads to continue putting out fire tablets. Interesting concern though, I have thought about it :)

Can someone tell me, is this supposed to reboot to the Nova Launcher? On my Fire 10 +, I basically have to run the Nova Launcher as an ap all the time. And if I close apps I have to be careful not to close the nova app or it closes to Amazon home. This seems bloaty .. is this what is intended? Or is something not working with Fire 10+ launcher overriding amazon?

additionally you can root it (some models can be rooted) and install lineageOs on it, which would provide a 100% pure android experience and remove all amazon related crap
yeah but only 2017/2018 models and before, until today you cant root or free the bootloader to install other OS. You can root some models but is temporal but very unstable.

Really appreciate this! Fire tablets are quite capable but I hate how they lock it down. Trying it now. My followup comment will be I either screwed it up or it worked beautifully!
Thanks for all of this info! One issue I ran into....After following all of the instructions here, I was unable to open any of my Kindle books on my Fire HD 8. Everything else functioned just fine. I attempted a restart, a manual shut down, and a 'hard restart' (holding down the power button for 40 seconds) none of that helped. So I went back into the Fire Tool, went into "Manage Amazon Apps" and selected to restore all of Amazon apps. That seemed to do the trick. I'm not sure which of the apps that had been removed killed my books, but something did. LOL! Just thought I'd share in case that happens to anyone else!
The Kindle app might be the one you're looking for. I say this because Kindle is the name given to the devices that's singular purpose was for the reading of e-books. But that was back in the day when iPhones only played music we were all so two thousand and late.
The amazon home screen still pops up first. I have the Nova launcher installed and it does work when I select the app. How do I get it to just be my main screen? I disabled when installing

Fire Toolbox is up to V28.1 and there are now limitations: • Custom Launcher - Launchers can no longer be set as default, and the homekey re-route method must be reapplied after rebooting or shutting down the device. • OTA Updates - OTAs can no longer be disabled. • Lockscreen Ads Remover - Ads can no longer be removed from the lockscreen. • Manage Amazon Apps - Some system apps can no longer be disabled.
Thanks man, it wouldn't hurt to make a new video since they simplified it a bit and the website changed quite a bit since this video. There's nothing that this video didn't explain that couldn't be done since fire box explains it. I really appreciate this video, this tablet has been sitting with my belongings for a few years now collecting dust. I've been thinking about using it as a drawing tablet to learn a bit I guess, I only found out that I could do this cause I couldn't find an app I wanted to try cause the fire store sucks (Also I couldn't download the legitimate youtube app, lol). I was able to install google play, and remove all the amazon apps, but whenever I click disable OTA updates it says disabled but is still enabled and no matter what I do, I cant disable the fire launcher, it says disables in the toolkit but it still runs in the background behind the new launcher. It also freezes when trying to install Google assistant. What am I doing wrong?
everything worked except the google play store - its says failed to install because files are corrupted - all four parts of it say that - don't know why only that doesn't work
This helped out a lot .. mines a 5th Gen and looking over the guide at first it says it's not compatible but it still worked much appreciated I now have me a security camera tablet!!
Does Nova Launcher work on older tablets including the 10" 2017 model? I am still seeing either downgrading the fire launcher or the Hijack app as the only options. Not what you are showing. Wasn't sure if this option is exclusive to the new version.
don't upgrade your tablet or the toolbox will not fully work. You can still install google services and google play but you can't disable amazon launcher anymore. not terrible for me but I would have preferred to disable it.
This no longer works. Amazon forces you to update the firmware BEFORE you even go through setup for the Fire Tablet. Once it's updated, the Fire Toolbox will NOT let you disable updates. Therefore, you'll be stuck with the ads on the lock screen. So I sent it back.

For those that find there way here. This is a very well done tutorial, albeit a little dated, but still mostly relevant.
There are a few changes / updates. The Fire Tool Box still works like a charm, now updated to V30.2!
It now has more features, more launchers, etc. AND you can get rid of alot more Amazon installed "stuff" that's installed by default. And you can customize more also. For example the whole navigation (you know the buttons at the bottom of tablets), can be 100% Android look AND feel. You can even customize the nav to Apple feel, if you're an Apple OS kinda person.
A Last note, if you are doing this for the first time.. DONT BE AFRAID to do these steps or even play around with different launchers and customizations, you WONT BREAK anything. This tool will allow you to go back and make changes to "things" you've done easily.
In about 15 mins I have my Fire HD 10 looking and working just like my other Android tablets without ANY hint of Amazon on it.
I agree. this was a good turorial! however, I followed all of the instructions and i saw that there are some changes with the new V30.2 which weren't too troublesome, but the next day I had a bunch of amazon apps back on my homescreen after it automatically did some update. Under settings/developer options/ I have "Automatic system updates" turned off. Any ideas on what i may have missed or done wrong?
@dawgboy binley I had this too. Before novalaucher would stay on but it remains as an app? So if you close all apps if reverts back to the fire os
I bought four of the previous Fire HD 10's when they were on sale for $100 for myself and family. Great budget, tossable devices, especially for media consumption. The XDA community has really been great for this line of tablets. Can't wait for these new ones to drop in price like the previous ones did!

Used the toolkit on my son's 2019 HD 10 and it worked so much better and easier than the old school method.
It isn't as good as being able to sandblast put a fresh install of liniage on with root access, but damned if it isn't close.
Curious to know if he's good any ebooks on it before & after. Did the install wipe them?

Can you answer a quick question for me please , I have always done most of this manually and never used this tool before and I never debloated , so if you use the standard option in the debloater does it disable/ break the hands free Alexa or show mode features?

Just went through your tutorial, much better than most. The only problems I had was the OS level did not let me a few things like the the ad blocker. The Fire tool version was a bit different, but they gave you links to work a rounds. Thanks for your handy work.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! Finally, a step-by-step procedure that actually works. There are so many BS videos where the menu options do not even appear on the tablet because they are designed for older versions even though they falsely claim the work on the Fire 10 (11th version).
I was finally able to install and use Google Maps after watching several worthless videos.
Thanks again for this tutorial, really helps me out several times now. Btw, I can confirm that the latest Toolbox V37 works on the 2024 Fire HD8. Been enjoying tinkering with my new toy, this afternoon!

Only wish I could get there some day but I have a hard time grabbing peoples attention but I will get better sooner or later. It fun to make videos, I have always like being creative and my current 9 to 5 doesn't give me the opportunity. I did it the hard way, by installing the four Google play store APK's individually. It's a Fire 10 HD ver. 13. It works great now!
Ran into a little bit of trouble installing the Google Services, but after a quick search online I stumbled through getting it to work. Thanks for this. all-star video.
If you bought a Fire Tablet during Black Friday 2021 or after, do not connect it to WiFi or allow any updates to happen before running the toolkit. The newest version is not yet supported by the toolkit (read the forum's last few pages too see a lot of people talking about this).

@@tosvus do a factory reset and then follow the steps on the toolbox page. I did the same thing and it wouldn't work, I factory reset it and followed the steps and it works fine.
Keep in mind that the USB-C cable that comes with the Fire tablet is for charging ONLY. Make sure to use one that's also for data transfer.

I did the initial tablet configuration using Fire Toolbox using another USB-C cable because I had read this, but I successfully did a subsequent adjustment using the included USB-C cable and was successful. At 4:21, ETA PRIME says, "... we're going to plug it in using the included USB type C cable."
I used the charging cable that came with it and it worked fine tbh
Maybe a stupid question what did they do to it to make it only work as a charging plug? I have never seen any USB-C cables that say they are just for charging only.
Just a suggestion, but you may want to add that after you enable usb debugging, some users may have to also choose "Default USB Configuration" and choose "File Transfer" as well as use a c-type cable that is a charging AND data cable, not just a charging cable ( usually the more expensive ones for like 10 bucks or so or it will say "data" on its packaging. The reason I mention this , is because usb configuration by default, is set to "No Data Transfer" which will cause some pc's the inability to read the device connected to it. Also Happy Easter and sub'd!

I was panicking because the apps I needed to download can only be downloaded in Google Play. 2023 sadly this guide no longer works, the interface has changed and so have permissions and Fire Tablet firmware. However, I managed to get Google Play and Book store installed. I picked up a white Certified Refurbished 10 inch tablet for £135 I was tempted to wait another eight days to see if they went down in price, but because the white version was limited stock, I decided to go and order, and then wait for Prime day and if they go down in price, then I can send this one back and buy another cheaper, but the white versions might have all gone. I just tried one ebook which is the reason why I wanted the tablet for and it is fantastic. So much better than trying to read on my Pixel phone. You can get cheaper tablets same size for a lot less, but some of the bad reviews put me off buying one, as one review said about the charger blowing up in his daughters face when she turned it on. I have just tried RUclips and I used Costa Rica 4K and the quality is (swear words) fantastic, I also had to go old school and play Tiffany I think we are alone now and the sound quality is very good, not tinny as some people say it is. I was looking at the new Google tablet, but at £700 so £566 more expensive, this is well worth it, especially if you can it in a colour that you want. I am sick of just black devices which is why I brought this one, white tablets matter, take the knee people.
Bought my daughter the HD8 for christmas. Followed the steps and it worked, thankyou ! Had a few issues with DL'ing the google services but after a few restarts it worked fine.

Got the same tablet, followed the steps and when I get to connect tablet to pc (Windows7), cant download drivers, Usb only charge the tablet.

@Clarissa 1986 that is the risk, for sure. Just like using ad blocker on RUclips... However, I'm willing to bet (with my literal money) that Amazon would never do this. What's also important to remember is that, you bought the hardware that "is" the tablet. It's your hardware to do what you want! Amazon takes a risk by using hardware that they did not engineer to build a tablet to run their software (which is also on the backs of open source Linux software). Trust me, they get enough people to put up with ads to continue putting out fire tablets. Interesting concern though, I have thought about it :)

Can someone tell me, is this supposed to reboot to the Nova Launcher? On my Fire 10 +, I basically have to run the Nova Launcher as an ap all the time. And if I close apps I have to be careful not to close the nova app or it closes to Amazon home. This seems bloaty .. is this what is intended? Or is something not working with Fire 10+ launcher overriding amazon?

additionally you can root it (some models can be rooted) and install lineageOs on it, which would provide a 100% pure android experience and remove all amazon related crap
yeah but only 2017/2018 models and before, until today you cant root or free the bootloader to install other OS. You can root some models but is temporal but very unstable.

Thanks for all of this info! One issue I ran into....After following all of the instructions here, I was unable to open any of my Kindle books on my Fire HD 8. Everything else functioned just fine. I attempted a restart, a manual shut down, and a 'hard restart' (holding down the power button for 40 seconds) none of that helped. So I went back into the Fire Tool, went into "Manage Amazon Apps" and selected to restore all of Amazon apps. That seemed to do the trick. I'm not sure which of the apps that had been removed killed my books, but something did. LOL! Just thought I'd share in case that happens to anyone else!
The Kindle app might be the one you're looking for. I say this because Kindle is the name given to the devices that's singular purpose was for the reading of e-books. But that was back in the day when iPhones only played music we were all so two thousand and late.

The amazon home screen still pops up first. I have the Nova launcher installed and it does work when I select the app. How do I get it to just be my main screen? I disabled when installing

• Custom Launcher - Launchers can no longer be set as default, and the homekey re-route method must be reapplied after rebooting or shutting down the device.
• OTA Updates - OTAs can no longer be disabled.
• Lockscreen Ads Remover - Ads can no longer be removed from the lockscreen.
• Manage Amazon Apps - Some system apps can no longer be disabled.

I really appreciate this video, this tablet has been sitting with my belongings for a few years now collecting dust. I've been thinking about using it as a drawing tablet to learn a bit I guess, I only found out that I could do this cause I couldn't find an app I wanted to try cause the fire store sucks (Also I couldn't download the legitimate youtube app, lol).

Honestly expected some long drawn out method to do this. But, I was pleasantly surprised!
I was able to install google play, and remove all the amazon apps, but whenever I click disable OTA updates it says disabled but is still enabled and no matter what I do, I cant disable the fire launcher, it says disables in the toolkit but it still runs in the background behind the new launcher. It also freezes when trying to install Google assistant. What am I doing wrong?
Start everything brand new. Factory reset the tablet and redownload the tool kit. Run it back again
New versions of fire os have patched disabling updating and changing the launcher
everything worked except the google play store - its says failed to install because files are corrupted - all four parts of it say that - don't know why only that doesn't work

Does Nova Launcher work on older tablets including the 10" 2017 model? I am still seeing either downgrading the fire launcher or the Hijack app as the only options. Not what you are showing. Wasn't sure if this option is exclusive to the new version.
YEs. Just did it on an old 2017 Fire HD 10
don't upgrade your tablet or the toolbox will not fully work. You can still install google services and google play but you can't disable amazon launcher anymore. not terrible for me but I would have preferred to disable it.

If you use older version of HD8(4 core A53) , don't try this, it will get very laggy. I tried.
I tried it on a pair of HD7s and the launchers glitch out after a few hours. Makes them near unusable. Everything else seemed to work fine though.

This no longer works. Amazon forces you to update the firmware BEFORE you even go through setup for the Fire Tablet. Once it's updated, the Fire Toolbox will NOT let you disable updates. Therefore, you'll be stuck with the ads on the lock screen.
So I sent it back.
