Being a teenager in the seventies we got to hear some of the best music for the first time.
Boston, Aerosmith, Zeppelin, Peter Frampton, Cheap Trick, ZZ Top and many, many others. We also had some leftovers from the sixties as well.

You could drive, walk, run, be on a boat and go any place in that city and I guarantee you'd here songs from this album. Of course, I was very proud of this band for blowing up skyhigh! I feel like people gave Boston too-heavy criticism back in the day because they "couldn't re-produce their music live." It was considered a studio creation, and therefore somehow "fake," and not pure rock. First of all, everyone I know who heard Boston live thought they were amazing. Second, if you can lay tracks by the same versatile musician/s, kicking ass on every different instrument or layer of an intelligent and rocking arrangement, and you end up with this? There is nothing more pure than that. Boston will always be a favorite of mine.

One of the biggest issues live was that it was impossible to recreate Brad's voice in multi part harmony and to get an acoustic guitar, an electric rhythm guitar, twin leads, and keyboards with only 5 people on stage. They were kind of Beatle-esque in the studio.

Actually Tom Scholz recorded most of the album in his basement studio in Watertown, Massachusetts. The singer, Brad Delp, recorded the vocal tracks in LA and so did Sib Hashian, the drummer. Tom started writing the songs while he got in a band after answering an ad for a keyboard player. That band was called Freehold and included Barry Goudreau, Boston's guitarist, and Jim Masdea, who played drums and who both helped with the early Boston demos. This was around 1970.
After about a year the band's name was changed to Mother's Milk and Tom asked Barry if he could also play guitar in the band and Barry agreed. Barry took Tom to a club in Revere, Massachusetts to hear Brad sing and they hired him for the band.
Tom started sending demos out of the songs he had written and they kept getting rejected. About a year or so before the album came out, Tom decided to stop playing gigs and concentrate solely on the demos and getting a record contract. Brad, Barry and Jim continued to help him with the demos, but the bass player for Mother's Milk quit the band.
Epic finally gave them a recording contract, but said they had to change the drummer and have a band ready to play. So I think it was Barry who suggested Sib Hasian for the drummer, though it might have been Brad because they both knew him. And Sib suggest Fran Sheehan for the bass.
Epic wanted every thing recorded at a studio in LA, but Tom wanted to record it in his home studio. They finally allowed him to do most of at the Watertown basement studio, with the exceptions I alresdy mentioned. They sent a producer there, but the producer gave Tom pretty much complete control and co- producer credit. Tom also managed to sneak Jim Masdea's drum track from one song on the demo into the album (Rock and Roll Band).
That's the short version of how it came about.
      After about a year

With Tom's own invention, the Rock Man, he was able to create, with his guitar, a thunderous wall of sound that blended in beautiful melodies that he used to caress the brilliant vocals of Brad Delp. This song is so impeccably produced as is all the other songs on the album, but this song reaches into your soul and grabs you, and brings on a ride like you've never been on. The guitar solos are epic and a tribute to the pure genius of one Tom Scholz.

Also underrated and unappreciated is the other guitar player in this album a guy named Barry Goudreau. Yes Tom Scholz did most of the heavy lifting with everything, but Barry was highly instrumental in the dual lead guitar stuff As far as Melody and arrangement.

Once you're done with this album, the second album ("Don't Look Back") is worth a listen. Not quite as extraordinary as the first album, and covers a lot of similar ground, but not a bad song on the album and some really good ones. I'd start with the title track (a song with special meaning to me, and a good banger). A slower but powerful song you could listen to next would be "A Man I'll Never Be."

Are you ready for this - Tom Scholz lead guitarist wrote every song and performed every instrument on the album including Drums, bass and lead guitars,he even sang but hated how his voice sounded so went looking for a singer to go on tour with and found Brad Delp ! Picked up a Bassist & Drummer and the rest is history !

Guitar tone is everything just like Queen you knew it was Brian May before you even heard vocals. Boston had a sound like no other band.

I would play this album so loud, with my floor speakers, that the bass would make the needle skip. Fun reaction you did, too.

Top to bottom it is almost the perfect rock album. Got to remember he was a early tech bro leaving a high paying job at IBM to chase his dream that is what this song has to be about. Probably would have ended up wealthy either route he took.

Those "laser" effects are actually pretty simple. He's scraping the edge of his pick down the strings, and then there's a bunch of echo and other effects on it.

Brad's vocal performance on this is impeccable. Sort of a redundancy, though, as Brad's vocals are nearly always impeccable . . .
