best album "ever made". No, don't think so. Sorry. GREAT? Yes. One of the best debut albums of all time? Yes, top 10 best debuts. But not the best ever made. Sorry. IMO
@michaelschey1084 I've been collecting rock/pop/Metal albums since 1970. This album is #1. There are a few other albums that are a distant 2nd, and then there are the rest. Obvioulsy music is subjective. IMO this is the masterpiece that will most likely never be surpassed. Near perfection.
Ridiculously catchy song. How many hooks can you throw into one rock track? And the mix of acoustic and spacey electric guitar is just killer. Deceptively dark lyrics underneath the bright shiny veneer of this tune: "Now you're climbin' to the top of the company ladder Hope it doesn't take too long Can't you see there'll come a day when it won't matter? Come a day when you'll be gone."
I grew up in Pittsburgh during the 1970s/1980s, a dismal place and time (I moved to Boston after college in 1989) but was blessed with the most amazing radio station 102.5 DVE, every weekday at 6pm the DJ (Herschel!) would do "the side at six" where he'd drop the needle at the beginning of an album side and just play it through (I was one of many who'd be standing by the stereo cassette deck ready to record the whole thing, lol)...THIS album side was the one he played most often...ah, good times!
This album came out when I was 15! In 1976! I still have the vinyl album and every single song on it is a hit! I’m 61 now and this music never gets old! That’s why we call it classic rock! Love your channel!!
Look up the vid of Tom Scholz visiting the house where he recorded most of this album! The little lady living there at first didn't realize the significance of the house she is living in. They go into the basement where he recorded. He remembered having to duck his head going into the basement. there was still masking tape on the door frame that Tom put there years ago. It's a great vid to watch.
In '76 I was 17, bought the album because More Than a Feeling hit the radio. Took the album home, put on my headphones, gently set the needle onto the vinyl and was completely mesmerized by what I heard. Now, it's headphones and an iMac, but the experience is the same. Incredible, 47 years later.
The feel gpod rock of Boston epitomized growing up in the 70s for me. This music defined amd framed my youth. Im instantly transported to being 17 and crusing town in my Chevelle. At the party. At home with the headphones. Hanging with my girl. Road trips with friends. Washing the car on a Saturday afternoon. At the pool. Its all in this music. What a great time. What great music. I'm glad you young guys get it too!
My favourite Boston song. The guitar harmonies are beautiful and just waaay ahead its time - only they and Thin Lizzy did it back then on such scale, even before Iron Maiden etc. Great energy, good message and that Boston sound.
This album was a monster when it came out. In fact from '75-'77 there were a batch of records that were phenomenal. Man it was great to be a teenager back then!
Ya, I've been saying how great it was to be a teenager back then as well, and yes, I also took all that great music for granted. Didn't really appreciate what I was listening to because I just couldn't wait to hear what was coming up next! But I do appreciate it all now! @@suebee3490
Was 16 when this came out, it was mind blowing. We had NO idea how good we had it as far as music back then. Between 75-80 >Boston, Frampton Comes Alive, Aja from Steely Dan, Rumours from Fleetwood Mac, Songs From The Key of Life from Stevie Wonder. Along with Styx, Foreigner, Springsteen, Band On The Run from McCartney, The hits never stopped!
Saw these guys with Eddie Money, Cheap Trick and Kansas at the Oakland Coliseum in 1976. What a great show. Boston's debut album was and still is some of the best music that came out of the 70's. Brad Delp (RIP) was right up there with Plant, Daltry, Ozzy; a very distinguished group. Sex, drugs and rock n' roll. Can I get an amen? Keep them coming guys.
I can recall driving my 1967 Chevy Impala east on Irving Park Rd. towards the city of Chicago, through the suburbs blasting this album on my 8-track player. I was soooo happening!! hahaha. I was 16 when this lp came out.
“The trademark sci-fi theme of the record cover was Scholz' concept: "The idea was escape; I thought of a 'spaceship guitar. ' " The original spaceship was designed in 1976 by Paula Scher and illustrated by Roger Huyssen with lettering by Gerard Huerta for Epic Records.”
The entire writing, production, playing, vocals, laying down of the tracks, are incredibly fantastic, this is one of the all time greatest albums EVER made.❤❤❤❤❤
I saw them in junior high in 1977 and they were headlining and the ticket price was $7.50, including all the extra fees and stuff, wow. They sounded awesome and the harmonies were great and everything about it was just fantastic.
Listened to this album in car on the way home today (before I knew you were doing this). Heard this a Million and two times - never gets old!!! This song is guitar driven!!! Brad's range is ridiculous!!!!! Knowing Tom S. did the arranging of the instruments - it could not be complete without Brad's vocals!!!! At 8:15 it does that thing where it goes to the sky to go back down, like in Long Time. The 4 part guitars is my absolute favorite(10:16)!!! When they come in one at a time! Whew!!!!! "Makes you so happy". Noticed they do always fade out... Keeps you wanting more. Ryan does not realize what a gift it is that he gets to listen to these songs for the first time!!!! He may not see it that way, but it is. 😊 All of them are good ( I do usually skip "smoking" but it's structure is totally Boston). Good message - be happy with what you have! I embarrass people at the end of the son... Always put one finger up for the first guitar (goes around twice) the two fingers and so on!!! Can't help it.
There's so many reaction sites are you too but I enjoy you guys the best I don't really watch the others I am 64 years old and I was listening to the song from the first came and pretending I was in the band and on stage making eye contact with a pretty girl those were the days you youngsters keep it coming
Boston is one of my favorite groups of the 70's, they were the most popular in the late 70's and in 1977, my senior year in high school. I love all of their songs. Please react to some Bob Seger, his best was "Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser."
I remember when this album came out...everybody went nuts. They were studio musicians & they were perfection in the performance & recording. I played that album over & over. It was SO great! His voice was amazing...
Tom Scholtz created the album in his basement. He wrote the songs and played all the instruments. There was not a band until after there was a contract.
Since you're in the 502, maybe City Lights, "now you've gone away". A local group named after the night club they were also part of. Like late 70's-early 80's. It's a good song, probably should have gotten them more national spotlight. Song's on RUclips. Don't know why I thought of it.aybe 'cause this is a 502 group, and it makes me think of them.
I first heard Boston when they played a demo of "More than a Feeling" on the King Biscuit Flour on a Sunday in 75. I was an instant fan. Even told my friends about them on Monday. I saw them live in 77 at Madison Square garden! I still have the concert program from that night! (Along with an ELO concert program from 78 also at MSG. Just 2 of my treasures!!!)
OMG - LOVE that ya'll are all SMILIN'!!! HOW CAN YOU NOT???!!! That high vocal: "YEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!": AMAZING!! Just MAKES ya SMILE!! HUGS, GUYS!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The greatest debut album of all time - there are some competitors (The Cars, Led Zeppelin I, Van Halen I, etc.) but this is it - where do you go from perfection? That was the question Boston couldn't answer because this was a perfect album.
Tom is a genius, no doubt, but when this first came out --- what CLEARLY set Boston apart was Brad. Lots of prog-rock guitar geniuses in the 70s, but Brad was a once-in-a-generation talent. Brad's voice got people interested in Boston.
Great song from a classic album. I played the cassette to death in my car, when the album debuted. BTW, the guitar/spaceships each have domes on top, with a different city from Earth underneath each one, as the ships are escaping an exploding Earth, with the city of Boston leading the way in the foreground. ❤✌
I was 11 when this album came out. We'd visit my Aunts house every Sunday and my cousin Tom was a Boston fan. He had this album playing all the time. Great memories. Been a Boston fan since. Great reaction guys ❤❤❤
This album was mixed and engineered so well, it was what I used to set my car stereo EQ with. Pretty amazing when you consider the bulk of it was recorded by Tom Scholz at his Massachusetts home.
As far as being more upbeat, to me that song on this album is Smokin', followed by Rock and Roll Band, and then Let Me Take You Home Tonight at least the later part of it, and it closes out the album.
~ Wow...thanks guys!! This song is awesome and your take on it was spot on! 🥰 There were elements of it that reminded me of "China Grove" by the Doobie Brothers, which isn't a bad thing. 😉
Wife Speaking.., I was born in the late 70's, my Parent's had this on 8 track...I've been jamming to it since..!!!..Boston is "Perfection" perfectly stated guys!!
Great song choice! “Smokin’” is good too! It’s good to see you guys getting back into some arena rock. Boston, Journey and REO Speedwagon are always welcome! Check out Journey’s “Line of Fire.”
Paula Scher was the Art Director at CBS records and upon Scholtz talking about his vision for the cover art, she and her team came up with this masterpiece. As with everything Boston and Scholtz, anything less than perfection was simply unacceptable.
This album was HUGE in my high school when it came out, seriously huge. There’s not one weak song. All bangers! Plus, I never thought about it before, but do you think the Van Halen’s were influenced by Tom Schultz’s wall of sound? I just picked up the possibility listening to this video…
Such a brilliant track off a great album. That breakdown toward the end with just Toms guitars, man, you know it's coming and still, just perfect... i know the debut album tends to get the majority of the love, deservedly so, & it's a tough one to follow, but i love the first three albums a lot. I count myself lucky to have seen them live with Brad still in great form in the 80s.
Just tuned in. Missed some of the reaction, but it appears y'all like the song. No surprise there. Look forward to watching the entire video. Edit: Hitch A Ride trumps the rest on Boston's 1st album. The guitar solo is mind boggling. But as you guys said, every song is good.
Yep...no more words left to describe the awesomeness of this album. This is a great one but "More Than a Feeling" is still my all-time favorite. (Yep, one of the few albums you can just hit shuffle & get bangers the whole way through. I'll say "Breakfast in America" is another that comes to mind). Keep bringing some classic rock guys, really enjoy your reactions.--- Oh, not sure if you have but have one for y'all; "I'd Like to Change the World" by Ten Years After. Be interested to hear your opinions.
Most albums from this time run (about): 28-36 minutes. ...I don't know the run-time off the top of my head (by any means!)! ...but: It's, definitely, under 40 minutes. Depending on how long your trips are/were, you could, easily, listen to 2 albums (plus) on one leg. -The "runtime"was decided by: the fidelity that one could achieve by cramming fewer songs onto one side of an album (The more songs you have on a side, the closer one has to cut the grooves. This reduces the "headroom" or maximum amplitude for any note or sound, period. Once you have too many, you degrade the overall sound of the album, in its entirety. ...It could, even distort. I believe that the "established standard" (for length of an album side)- which was decided upon by mastering engineers, audio engineers, musicians and cutting-lathe operators, as well-...I don't know who, exactly, or where or when.\ Probably, multiple groups of individuals looked at this and listened.--It wasn't as if there was "a grand get-together" and some "assigned board" "decided" what the acceptable album run-time/length of a side was 'going to be' "for everyone," everywhere!🙄🙄🤦 Of course not!! -but there were standards and (slightly) differing beliefs ...yet, everyone, (mainly) still, closely mimicked one-another/agreed in most ways. (with a slight "push-pull" on numbers [time]) was: 13-15 minutes (per side). You could, of course, have/use LESS and you MIGHT (COULD, but were, often, discouraged from doing so) be able to push, slightly, more; even...but: in general: there was a "length decree" -of some form- {"in house"} and if you went over that (by, even 30-40 seconds, or something!), often someone was asked to edit the 2-track (stereo) master, down! SO: until about 1987: there were few albums which exceeded 35-36-37 minutes (or so).! In the late '80s (with new formulations for platters and better cutting machines), the "60 minute album" became a reality. ...although most things of that length were cut onto 2 platters (still!)! Def Leppard's Hysteria had a hugely long running time (I think, like 56 minutes??) (for THE DAY, I mean!) -on a SINGLE platter! ...Metallica's [ill-fated] ...And Justice For All (despite its removal of bass frequencies and all of the other issues, sonically, with it!), was slightly over an hour and came as a 2 disc. album/'platter set.' Only.
An amazing backstory on one of the greatest debut albums ever. My favorite tune from this album, which came out at a time of my young adulthood when I needed to hear it.
That guitar sound invented by Scholz, bought by many players in the Rockman device. And thing for me, that first album sounds more raw and less compressed than the later offerings.
I’ve been watching you guys reaction videos and I really enjoy your chemistry. I think I have a song that you guys would really enjoy. Smoke From A Distant Fire by Sanford Townsend
I've been listening to Boston for almost 50 years. It will never get old.

Best Debut album of all time period.
No Doubt About It…!!
Another good Boston song!
It doesn't matter if it's the 1st, 10th, 50th or 100th time you've listened to a Boston song, you will rock out with it. That's how great they were.
Absolutely 👍

Daltry and Ozzy? They are nowhere NEAR Brad's talent. Popularity is one thing. Daltry was not a singer.
I can recall driving my 1967 Chevy Impala east on Irving Park Rd. towards the city of Chicago, through the suburbs blasting this album on my 8-track player. I was soooo happening!! hahaha. I was 16 when this lp came out.

(with a slight "push-pull" on numbers [time])
was: 13-15 minutes (per side).
Guys, do next these other's greatest songs, from them : "I Need your love" , "Livin for you" & "hollyann"

This is S+ tier music. It's amazing as humans we have already made the best music and it was years ago!
An amazing backstory on one of the greatest debut albums ever. My favorite tune from this album, which came out at a time of my young adulthood when I needed to hear it.
Good song, good music. The whole album is good
Thanks for reacting to this one...your comments were spot on!
