Do Wireless Chargers Degrade Your Battery Health?

  • So I saw a bunch of comments on a recent video of mine about wireless chargers degrading battery health. And in this video I explain whether or not wireless chargers degrade your battery health or damage your battery or is it just a myth. Since wireless or induction charging has gotten to a point where almost every upper mid range to high end smartphone has it, people have started using it more frequently thanks to its easy of use. Apple's iPhone battery health monitoring system which allows you to see how much your iPhone's battery health had degraded has started to cause people to wonder how their iPhones battery health has degraded and how they can stop it, and a main suspect is usually wireless charging as phones overheat while wireless charging. The popularity of Belkin Wireless chargers, Anker Wireless chargers and Apple MagSafe chargers have seriously pushed the technology into a serious and useful feature on modern smartphones. But some people have asked, do wireless chargers degrade battery health? or are wireless chargers bad for your phone?..reasonable questions for a technology as such. So lets answer the questions of whether wireless chargers ruin your battery health or damage your battery! #WirelessCharging #MagSafe #FastCharging

    I just brought a 15-watt wireless duo charger from Samsung 2 days back. I'm using a Samsung note 20 ultra phone. The wireless charger comes with a 25-watt wall charger adapter just like my phone which even out of the box has a 25-watt wall charger adapter to plug in. Due to the Usage of the Samsung wireless charger Will degrade my phone's battery or not? Since it's manufactured by Samsung do I need to worry? One more doubt is for a 15-watt wireless charger why does Samsung give 25-watt wall charger adapter?

    I have purchased an aftermarket wireless dock, but still using my 5mAh charging brick from apple store. Don't think I get the full 15w fast charging, but it still charges pretty fast. Think I'll test with cable, but I doubt I can get the full 15w charge using this brick so I think I'm technically not "fast-charging" the phone. Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong. Actually Magsafe already tried to solve alot of these problem. Thats why they are little slower than other solution from Android world because they dynamically change the charging wattage based on temperature of both the phone and charger, another thing is they also add magnet to align the coils to reduce the waste of power.

    My coworker bought an iPhone 12 Pro Max, which she has on a wireless charger all day, about six months ago and her battery health is now at 92% which to me seems kind of low for a phone that old. Another coworker who has had an iPhone 12 mini for about four months and who uses the cable to charge has 100% battery health.

    • @mocha6315
      @mocha6315 2 года назад +21

      That is a very unreliable claim because battery health is also dependant to the user’s usage and his/her charging habit. If you use a lot of performance heavy apps, the phone will heat up very easily hence it will degrade your battery health much faster no matter which charging option you go. There are a lot of combinations we can do here but the optimal usage is most probably using low performance dependent apps and also constantly using low power wireless charger between 20 - 80% because you will easily hit 100% when using the cable, unless you have a complete confidence that you will always pull out your cable before 90%.

Your claim is absolutely stupid and not worth to take note for.

    Interesting thanks. Quick question though: does it impact taking the phone off and on the MagSafe charger ? I use the MagSafe thing as a holder for the phone. If I go to the kitchen or feed the cat I remove the phone from it. So over a day I probably ‘start’ a charge about ten times. Does that impact battery life ?

      @pureby 2 года назад

      @@pureby could you explain why because charge cycles confuse me

    • @pureby
      @pureby Год назад +2

      @@wajih228 Without getting too technical: rechargable batteries "rest" at 50%. 0% and 100% are the two most stressful states. Think of a battery as your stomach -- you won't feel good after eating 3 portions of food in a row, neither will you if you have eaten nothing for the full day. But you feel perfectly fine somewhere in-between lunch and dinner.
      Besides, going to 0% triggers chemical processes which facilitate battery degradation. Going to 100% produces extra heat, which too degrades battery.
      The best practice is to charge your batteries at least 10-90 instead of 0-100. This can literally make your battery last years longer.

    2:21 - charge cycles isn't just about going from 0-100. It is any time the battery cycles from charging>use/discharging>charging. That's why older NiMH/NiCd trickle chargers destroyed Li-based batteries, because it continually tops out the battery as soon as "charge" is spent or lost. So a wireless charger repeatedly charging your phone from 100%>99>100>99 eats up charge cycles... and so is placing it on the dock, using it for a minute, placing it back on the dock, check your text, place it back, etc.

Yes discharging a battery from 80% to 30% twice equates to a complete cycle, but it is way easier on the battery than going from 100 to 0%. The amount of cycles on a battery is only a portion of the impact on longevity, excessive heat and being in the upper and lower 20% are two big things that degrade lithium batteries much quicker.
