  • Wireless charging is all the rage these days. Unfortunately, it's not quite up to par. It turns out that most chargers are actually wasting tons of electricity - and they're not exactly easy to use, either. Join for me for a look at yet another wireless technology that leaves a lot to be desired...

The main issue with strictly wired charging is the issue of wear and tear. They make these connectors and ports as tiny and delicate as they can, knowing full well the phone is effectively trash once it fails to charge, and then to top it off they seal the battery that's GUARANTEED to die no matter how gingerly you treat the phone inside so you can't even replace or charge the battery through other means. It's so disgusting and disheartening. So much for the free market driving innovation.
The phone makers and vendors hold all the power and they dictate to their captive customers what _they_ think is best and then all collude together to cut off any viable alternative that people might have actually wanted. Then we all just try to choose the least shit option (except for Apple users who prefer shit) and act like it's ok for these companies to be coercing us into replacing our $700 phones every time their $10 battery dies or their needlessly thin screen glass breaks.
If they cared at all about making things green they'd design phones to be robust and user serviceable, with standardized parts so that we could decide for ourselves when it's time for a new device. It's really not up to the consumer at all what kind of environmental and socioeconomic impact the devices we use will have. Hell, we have to fight for the right to even repair our own shit. How fucked up is that? We're getting sold broken shit by a broken system. We need to stop buying into it.
Dammit now I'm all upset. Thanks a lot Scottie.

You should check the power adapter you are using and make sure it's rated for fast charge, preferably from the manufacturer you got the phone. Alot of third party chargers will only charge at 5v 2a at USB 1 standard usually this is not enough to keep up especially if you are using the phone with the screen on.

I stopped using my wireless charger because my phone (LG V30+) kept warning me of getting too hot while being charged. The phone suggested that I should not be running any apps while charging, but nothing of any consequence was running. It was the wireless charger as the phone was quite warm to the touch after charging (my guess about 40 deg C) . This heat did not happen with a wired charger. I packed away the wireless charger and now only use wired, not wanting to push my luck on reduced battery life.

I spent about a week looking into a charger that I thought would work with both my phone AND its case (it also fast charges). I've used wired forever and hated old wireless chargers. I finally found one that had more good reviews than bad (don't think I saw any bad reviews on the first page of reviews--it did have some, just not the first page which was rare to find).
I ordered it and it works with my phone in its case and has a spot for my earbuds to charge as well. Aligns due to it being a stand for the phone and a clear circle for the buds (a second phone can also be charged there).
The main reason I finally wanted wireless was because I'm a business owner (LMT) and need to constantly grab my phone to see if the notification is a client or possibly a new client. I also used to be a dog-worker and still do a lot of dog sitting for my old clients from my old business, so dogs have, many times, managed to snag my cords because I need them longer to avoid constantly having to unplug or plug in my phone.
Today, I'm spending the day monitoring the heat it creates on the two devices to ensure there's no dangerous overheating.
You definitely make a lot of good points and, having spend a number of days reading charger reviews, most of them are on point. Many cheap chargers are both useless and dangerous due to overheating. Really be aware of what you're buying if you do get a wireless charger.

one of the big reasons I read about the wireless on why, is because of sealing the phone complete to be submerge into water or to be water resistant anything that has holes will limit this from happening, also wireless charging is getting better and better. its actually good enough to remove all wires from here on out. Even though im not a fan of the wireless, its convenient to have that option if your shooting footage out in bad weather or if you happen to fall into a lake or somewhere dangerous to be able to make a emergency call without a dead phone can save a life.

I really don't like wireless charging or ultra fast charging. I've noticed that it makes my battery drain quicker, it builds up too much heat which isn't good for the battery, and it takes just as long to wirelessly "fast" charge my phone as using an old iPhone charging block. I'd rather it take it's time and prevent the battery from degrading too quickly.

oh how hard it is to align two similar sized rectangles to each other.
On my old phone with a wonky micro-USB socket it was a great solution.
Of course boosting power usage to a certain point would need another powerplant to jump in - which is an economical loss.
But guess what, power plants don't scale to the Watt, they overproduce at any given time, and there is huge waste of energy. How to solve that economical? Use green energy.
Wireless charging shouldn't be the all around solution. Fast charging via cable is a very good thing. But certain appliances would be great for wireless charging:
It needs to be absolute waterproof? Don't have any sockets and openings! Usewireless charging.
You ruin your battery pack with fast charging over night?
Have a slow inductive charger, use it while you're asleep and pick up your phone in the morning without any accidental cord rupture.
Inductive charging will never be as efficient as a high-grade cable, but that isn't its selling point in the first place.
"A disaster in waiting" would be explosions, heart attacks, fast aging of cells and techs. Not a cupple wasted Watts. Old or very cheap USB-Wall-charger do that, too.

The issue here is that wire way of charging poses two issues for cell manufacturer. 1. the most common problem is failure of charging port, biggest problem; by introducing wireless charging this goes away. 2. by eliminating charging port they can substantially increase battery space and make the phone much easier waterproof + many other things. Both big benefits for manufacturers.

Well, 'they' say all sorts of things are safe when they're not necessarily... But in any case, it should be fine to use such a phone and charge it via the cable. The phone's wireless charging mechanism should emit basically nothing. Even if it does, it will be very, very tiny compared to the microwave or millimeter wave RF being emitted so it can do all its phone-y stuff.

Isn't this how electronics gets blown up? I know the amount of voltage induced is dependent on the number of turns of the coil. So what happens if you accidentally put your wireless charging phone over a live power cable (say 110 or 230V). If the coil was 10 turns, would it induce 1100 or 2300V with the power cable being 1 turn ?

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  3 года назад +1

Transformers can step up/down the voltage/current, but a simple coil won't. The other trick is that the coils in the charger and phone are tuned to each other - sort of like an FM radio tuner. Throw in a few components to protect the coil from stray EMFs that do couple (weakly) to the coil, and it works.

The main reason i end up replacing a phone or other USB devices (like lighters) is the eventual damage of the charging port, i try to be careful, but sometimes a cord is pulled or a phone is hastly picked up while still plugged and little by little the charging port is damaged... liked a lot the old Xperia Z magnetic charging ports and i started using magnetic tipped usb cables... but they are more expensive than normal cables and very succeptible to catching up metal dust if you are not extra careful, i once dropped my cable on the street and found it filled with small particles of rust.... So wireless charging does not sounds like a bad option to me , perhaps not as the main power source but as an option when your cable gets damaged ant to avoid some wearing of the usb port

But, if people want to wirelessly charge their Device, that's fine. i'd rather have a Wired charger which is not only cool, but very good at preserving energy, also to add one final Thought, Phones do not like heat.

The problem is micro-usb ports fail -- my current phone doesn't charge anymore unless I fiddle with the cable. So they need a better connector!
The USB-C might be better...or even worse with more pins to connect with. The old laptop power plug was more reliable, and even that we had to replace on a couple laptops. So a better solution is needed, although the phone companies just want you to get a new phone every year anyway, so they don't care if the ports fail after 2 years.

  • @blatantmisconception
    @blatantmisconception 2 года назад

Which is worse? Wasted power when charging, or having to build a whole new phone to replace one with a dead port? They're mostly irreparable to most people. Then there's the energy cost to recycle your old phone? Oof, and the components need built, transported, built into that replacement, trucked to a port, sent over seas to western markets, trucked to a warehouse, distributed to retail locations or to the purchaser... It's gotta be close.

My Wireless charger will quick charge my Galaxy Note 9 from %0 to %100 in about the same time as when charging via the charging cable (Less than 3 hours). It's a cheap one I got on Amazon for $12 but it does have the problem of the charging cutting off and back on if I don't find the Sweet Spot on the charging pad, so it seem to be like you said, you have to line up the coils just right to get it to work reliably but it could also be that it's a cheap poor quality charger.
Al though the Wireless charger I got at Big Lots that is not a Fast Wireless charger but just a regular wireless charger did not have the problem of cutting off and back on the charging.
I stand Corrected, it takes longer (Wired will take 1 and 49 minutes from %0 to %100) but still less than 3 hours isn't bad for wireless.

I use wireless chargers for my phone and magnetic cables for my gadgets
It's really good. Sure, it wastes a bit of energy, so instead of charging my phone for 2 bucks a year it costs 3. Sure, it is much slower so if I need to top up my phone for half an hour I will plug it in. And, of course, I need to align my phone perfectly and in the summer it may overheat and stop charging.
But it's very convenient. My phone is at my desk at full charge. If I need to go to the bathroom or for a coffee or for a call I just pick it up. When I'm done I just place it on the charger again and it tops up.
I never have to worry about whether it's worth it plugging the phone in or for the durability of the connector. I place it on the pad and it charges.
If I cared about the extra electricity I wouldn't have bought the charger anyway (since it cost 20$/it's a waste product). I also would have other priorities, like reducing my electric heater bill, since it consumes 200-300x the electricity.

The real reason wireless is here to stay is aesthetics. Designers and people in general just prefer not to see wires.
Wireless charging could probably be a good future solution for large scale application where time is a factor. Imagine a future where trucks are electric but instead of needing huge, efficient batteries capable of taking them cross country, you have wireless charging built into highways. I'm obviously talking about some significant technological advances and it will require a stable electrical grid, so not one dependent on "renewable" energy.

Mercedes never said that their wireless charging system was 10% more efficient than the normal wired method.
They said their AirCharge system was _* 10% LESS*_ efficient.
What Mercedes actually claimed was: *_"...an efficiency rate of more than 90 percent for transfer of electricity from power source to car..."_*

Right. Since 90% efficiency is higher than what you normally get with plug-in electric cars (82% they claimed), that's more efficient than other (wired) solutions. Of course, the topic of the efficiency of Tesla's Superchargers for example could be a video all it's own... I've seen numbers ranging from 33% (unlikely) all the way up to 98% (also unlikely). LOL!

Sorry, I dont buy it… For one thing, it’s not too much work to plug in your cell phone, Qi charging is a convenience. If it costs less than $1.00 per year to charge your cell phone and if the Qi charger is taking 50% more, even on a grand scale, I can live with it. Lining up a phone on a Qi charger is no super human feat. You set it on and it charges. I’ve been using a Samsung fast charge wireless charging stand for years and have never had any alignment problems.

I would highly recommend you do your own research. There are always going to be naysayers for everything. I got a wireless charger for my Note 8 and it was only around 10% less efficient than the standard wall charge at the same exact charging rate on my phone. I have a phone stand type wireless charger and you sit it on and it always charges at 100%. My USB-C connector quit working about a year in, so I'm pretty thankful I have this. The convenience is worth a couple cents of electricity a day. As to everyone's total extra energy usage, this is laughable compared to just legally requiring double-pane windows in all new construction.
