Bushcraft Canoe Trip in Sweden, Part Two. Illness in Camp.

  • In this video series, Andy (Kent Survival) and I head off to the Swedish Wilderness for a five day canoeing and bushcraft adventure inspired by Dave Bliss’ book ‘Paddles and Polar Bread’. Paddling along the massive lake Stora Le, we experience all the weather Sweden can throw at us, from glorious sunshine, to snow and strong winds whipping the lake up into a raging turmoil of waves and spray. We take all our equipment and food with us in our aluminium Linder canoes and camp in Dano huts or wild camp along the way.
    This video is episode two, an unexpected day of remaining in camp while Andy recovered from illness. After a hearty breakfast of pancakes and syrup, I take the opportunity to explore further up the shoreline of the lake and battle with strong cross winds and rain to cross over the lake to check out some cliffs on the other side. In this episode, I also go through my clothing load out for the trip.
    I hope you enjoy the video and please tune in for the next episode.
    Thanks for watching!

    You with that hood on reminds me of Bruce Willis in Unbreakable. That doesn't mean you need to be an everyday hero or anything ...but, an everday hero stands by his friends when the chips are down. Kudos.

    Nice to see you in my old huntinggrounds, i was working as a Dano Ranger for 4-5 years taking care of all campsites to bring wood and digged holes for the toilets. It was the best job i ever had and still are But i had a kid and the pay was not that Good. But its fun to see you there doing a report of the area. I Hope it can bring some english outdoorsmen to the area and not only danish and germans. Respect the nature and it Will respect and provide for you. For future reference, a nice strong tea made from scratch or pine needles would help him feel better. Adding the Willow bark to the tea would bring down his fever too.
    Willow is what aspirin was originally derived from.
    Don't underestimate the power of plants as medicine. Many, if not most, of the medications we get from the pharmacy came from plants.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 лет назад

      I think we would all benefit from using more natural remedies that can be found around us - didn’t know about the fever reducing properties of willow bark - thank you!

    Simon, greetings from Massachusetts in New England. I thoroughly enjoy your videos of paddling, hiking, camping, baking bread and so forth. It makes me a little anxious when I see you paddling off with only a single paddle in hand. We have a saying that defines extreme bad luck: "Up s--- creek without a paddle." Here we always carry an extra paddle in case one gets dropped or broken. I wouldn't like to think of you out in the middle of Stora Le in a gale without a paddle.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  4 года назад

      I always paddle with a spare, however, in Sweden the canoe hire only included one per person - glad I wasn’t alone, just in case!

  • @billyaitken1713

    You're spot-on with mittens Simon. Having your fingers all together means they share their warmth & get colder at a much slower rate than isolated fingers in gloves. My wife struggles with cold hands so I made her get some leather-palmed mittens for Japan's winter, they keep her hands warm & the leather palms mean added grip & wear/tear resistance. Ever see a polar explorer wearing gloves? Nope. They always have mittens😎👍

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  4 года назад +1

      I can’t wear gloves, I’ve never found a pair that actually keep my hands warm - I’ll use them for moving pots around in the fire etc or rough work to protect my hands, but for warmth - mitts every time! 👍

    Such a Fine Example of how grand it can be to have a friend along when there's an illness or trouble. I'm a 100% Solo Venturer 100% of the time. I experienced life threatening injuries going over 3 water falls in close secession after loosing footing tracking a Bear that I had reason to believe had crossed the River. "Huge Story." I was saved by my dog in isolated country. Without his help I would have never made it up the river embankment. Looking forward to next segment. Thanks Simmon, .. Mike.

    You and Andy make a fine team of outdoor adventurers: this bit of adversity only adds to the evidence. Andy posted earlier, so I admired his positive outlook and willing to get back into things. Your opening was wonderful videography! The lighting, colors and framing were first rate! I always liked to stay in clean 'Adirondack' lean-tos in Massachusetts and Vermont so the Dano hut looked a fine home with plenty of shelter. Not so much head room but up off the ground and solid walls on three sides. Plus heavy duty roofing. Tall fellows like you look good in Tilley hats...I always looked like a short, fat mushroom. Watch caps suit me well. Truly appreciate the veteran loadout advice!

    Love your videos. I live in Minnesota and have made many trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. About 40 years ago we used to just scoop up water from the middle of the lakes (the water is crystal clear), but after getting really, really sick we have since that time either boiled our water or used water treatment tablets. Water in the wild is never really safe no matter how clear and pure the water appears. The sad part is, with some of the water born bugs you can get you can get recurrent illness for several weeks.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 лет назад

      That is certainly true for most places in the world, but many of those big Swedish lakes are perfectly safe to drink as is - a combination of many factors - climate, lack of agriculture, size of the lake (dilution), very little human impact etc. The water in Stora Le is probably more pure than store bought mineral water. 😁👍💦💦💦

    Great video, this country your traveling in looks very similar to northern Minnesota in the US. Thanks for the video. I am also a hammock camper for about 15 years.

    Beautiful! Interesting to see your clothing strategy, well prepared and redundancy. Hope Tour friend will recover and your paddle adventure turns to the bright side! Subscribed 💪🏻👍🏻

    15:23 - I love that the weight concern was about the luggage allowance and not the capability of the canoe or occupant.

    Great Tour Simon. I have allready seen the first part. Beautyfull country sweden is. Illness or a cold is very bad on hikes. Good path and stay healthy. Alex from the Lower Mountain Range the Eifel.
    So, now I keep on watching the video.. (-:
