    I think the IR2 is meant to be used with other pedals, whereas the pod express is more an all-in-one solution. Both great pedals

      yeah they are definitely in different segments. IR-2’s rivals are amp sims like Iridium, UA Dream, and many of pedal-sized preamps. On the other hand, POD is a compact multi effect pedal that’s competing with Zoom MS-50G+, Hotone Ampero mini, etc.

    I have both units, and they each serve different purposes in my home studio set-up. The Boss IR-2's stereo effects loop makes it possible to integrate the pedals I already have into the signal chain, so I can have an elaborate pedal board running into it. The Pod Express looks complicated, but once you figure out the way the knobs work, it is great to just plug, play, and tweak to your heart's content for jamming and songwriting. It's super plasticky, and so better suited (for me) as a desktop, direct recording device, while the Boss IR-2 is well built and made for stomping on a pedal board. The Pod Express sounds awesome (to my ears), and I much prefer the user interface when it comes to changing tones on the fly. I'm having a blast with it, but I'll keep the IR-2 on my pedal board. I have tried putting various drives and fuzzes in front of the Pod Express, and it sounds great. In fact, I prefer using my own drives rather than the ones built in to the unit. But with without an effects loop, I can't integrate my ambient pedals into the signal chain in a way that sounds good to me. However, the built-in ambient effects are in stereo, and they sound great.

    I have the IR-2 and it's meant to be an ampless rig and an interface. I like the fact I can replace the stock IRs with something better. I don't use the onboard reverb.
    I finally used the IR-2 in a band setting last night as part of my small pedalboard and ran it thru a Fender FR12. Nobody knew I was not using a real amp. You could not tell it was a IR sim and it takes pedals without issue.
    I am curious about the Line 6 primarily for a simple all in one practice unit. From what I had heard in demos, I wasn't wowed by some of the effects. That is something that needs to be heard in person to really sus it out.

    Can't wait to hear you do a sound comparison. I think the lack of 3rd party IR loading would be a deal breaker for me on the Line 6, but if the preloaded amps/cabs sound great, that may not be such an issue. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸

    One key evaluation criteria missing from the review: EQ (e.g., tone knob(s), adjust bass/treble, mid(s)), along with ease of adjustment (e.g., menu deep dive, push/hold/scroll).
    I have the pocket pod express (from way back when), and the lack of a tone adjuster makes some amps unusable, primarily when used as a headphone amp.

    Hi Leo. Going over this video again. Looking really hard at the IR2 for an amp less pedal board solution. I love that it's converters are 32/96 and that it has such a nice effects loop that I can add in a couple delays or an Eventide micro pitch to get that Steve Vai at the crossroads movie tone for fun and for playing out during a solo. Maybe someday I will be as good as a guitarist as you are kind sir. ❤. You're guitar playing is outstanding and your music writing is even better. That's a combination that is rare today with most artists. You have a gift from God with melody and writing I believe. You would have been right at home with Beethoven I think 😂❤. I really do enjoy your music and need to buy the digital version of your latest work. Maybe you can tell me where I can buy and download sir using my android phone ???
    Great video Leo. As always. If I want to really study these things as us guitar nerds do , your channel has the best comparisons and reviews bar none on RUclips. Thank you for the detailed comparison Leo. I'll be buying the Pod Express for both Guitar and Bass as I'm already a heavy user of the HX Stomp XL and Pod Go, and it will be convenient for me to have the same sounds in a small unit for portability. I have mimicked the amp and cab settings that will be on the Pod Express by building presets in my HX Stomp that match the same amps and cabinet selection. The Pod Express amps and cabs should match HX 3.7 and Pod GO 2.0. I find these sounds to be pleasant and acceptable to me. But for buyers who are new to Line 6, I might recommend perhaps waiting for a bit or trying one to see if you like the sounds. I can foresee Line 6 adding a software editor with IR-loading functionality eventually, but I think this might take at least one year or more than that. Can't wait for you to get your hands on the Pod Express, I think you will make great music with it!

    Line6 officials have stated that the actual consumated current of the POD Express is about 150mA which gives you 6 hours of battery life. The figure in the manual is for legal compliance.

    • @dheranYT
      @dheranYT 6 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, I said this too in the comparison between the zoom G2four vs Nux MG400. Zoom, the same as Line6, states a current draw in the manual which is only related to the official power supply that each brand sells. That's not the same as the real consumption of the units, which usually is way inferior than the value stated in the manual.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr

    Great video kind sir. I like the IR2 better because the effects loop inclusion.. I will have to have an Eventide Micropitch pedal in the effects loop or a TC electronics delay with the 2290 feature with ducking delay. ❤.. Also, an SD1 as a boost and any other pedals I want would go great as a small travel and recording pedal. board with the IR2.. Plus, and I think this really matters is that the Boss Aird technology feels more like a real amp when using just breaking up Plexi tones.
    I still feel like for home practice Boss Katana Amps are better because of less expense and you get a real guitar speaker in the room even if at low volume and they have great tone. Maybe not as good as a high end tube amp, but great no matter. With a modeler you must also use a computer interface and studio monitors or a FRFR speaker if not headphones to hear yourself. I still like both though. ❤

      @@LeoGibsonGtr You are welcome kind sir. The katana is really very good. Very good, but the Roland blues cube hot is outstanding. It feels and sounds like a tube amp. I'm 62 and grew up playing tube amps, mostly combos from Fender, Peavey, Marshall, and more, and the blues cube hot would be my choice for a recommendation of an amp to gig with. I would probably not recommend it for Marshall only sounding amp, because it's a Fender tone amp by design.. I think Roland / Boss does make Marshall and Vox cube amps as well though.

    I see the Pod express as either a practise rig OR as an FU rig. Don't want to pay me a decent amount to play the gig? Fine! you're getting the cheapest guitar I own, thru the Express directly into the PA system. I call it the 10x protocol, I multiply whatever you're paying me for the gig by 10 and that's how much gear I bring. Guitar rig, mic, stand/cable: the lot. I give it everything performance wise and make no compromises there because that's what the audience deserves but you're not getting me to bring 5k worth of gear to your establishment to make 50 bucks. Also, wouldn't a Valeton GP100 be a better choice and considerably cheaper than either of these two?

    yeah I think the two unit are not exactly in the same category. the line6 is a complete yet simplified solution while the boss it's essentially just an amp simulator. the similar size and price is misleading.

    How about using the effects on the POD thru the Amps/cabs on the IR2?

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  6 месяцев назад

      Yes, it is possible, but I think in this way you cannot use the distortions of the POD as they would be after the amp sim of the IR2.

      So maybe an overdrive/distortion pedal into the main input on the IR2 and the POD Express in the IR2 loop for Mod/Delay/Reverb effects?

    No Line in is a deal breaker esp for the Line6 as you can't use it to learn songs or practice with a backing track. Maybe you can use the FX return on the boss? But the Line6 no.

      In the theory Amp Academy is much better but in real life is not (what makes me sad because I would like to buy the Amp Academy). There is no video or forum about that without complains against the bad/bugged software or updates, some functions not working anymore and so on.

    Many cons of Pod you mentioned are the result of you NOT being the target audience of the unit - even Line6 in their FAQ quite clearly says why it exists - it is not for you ;)

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  6 месяцев назад +7

      Thank you for sharing! I don't think I have highlighted many cons...I have just pointed out differences with the IR2. The real cons (in my opinion) is the missing possibility to load IRs...the rest is the fruit of Line 6 choices, and maybe also their "desire" to create something very different from the IR2 even if with almost the same form factor and similar price.
      Thank you!

    • @Searchio
      @Searchio 6 месяцев назад

      I would mention the 500mA. They're definitely a con to consider. Not all power supplies have that output option. I'm sure it comes with its own supply, but in a setup with your own dirtpedals in front you might need two sockets instead of one. That is a mostly a con.
      Greetings Leo.
      As always, good work.

      @@Searchio Line6 officials have stated that the actual current consumption of the POD Express is about 150mA which gives you 6 hours of battery life. The figure in the manual is for legal compliance.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  6 месяцев назад +3

      Let me add the in the user manual it is stated "500mA minimum current, and 4.5W minimum power".... I mean...they wrote MINIMUM current...at least they could have written "maximum"....very misleading...

      @@LeoGibsonGtr I fully understand however IRs can be like a rabbit hole. If this thing sounds good out of the box the simplicity and immediate gratification are its main selling factor. Not tweakability and tons of features. This is why I understand their approach and I'm sure they'll find many who will appreciate the philosophy, too 😉
