A gain control is not a volume control. When using them it may seem like they do the same thing, but they're very different. Gain controls are always on the input of a component and volume controls are always on the output. The main thing you need to know is only a gain control can distort or overdrive the signal. Volume controls don't alter the signal in any way. They just attenuate.
This would probably work well enough for me because I coil split my Duncan Distortion for cleans on my strat using a number 2 position tone. I never expect humbuckers to clean up as much as single coils.
@6:40 there are only 7 built in presets all in the white bank the other 14 slots in the yellow and purple banks are left blank for you to program in your own custom presets, and of course you can also overwrite the 7 presets in the first (white) bank if you want to , i know because it kinda freaked me out at first because all the reviews said there are 21 preset slots , but neglected to tell you that 14 of those are deliberately left blank , i had to actually read the user manual (something i almost never resort to haha) to find out this is how its supposed to be
Those dual-function pots always drive me mad. The one good thing about a potentiometer is that you know what the setting is just by looking at it. But when it just writes a value into memory while you turn the dial, the actual setting becomes much harder to gauge (once you have done an adujstment of the alt setting). Therefore in a multi-mode layout like this is, I much prefer a small display+an infintiely turning encoder wheel.
The lack of a software editor is a big plus for me. I don’t like having to plug things into a computer to access features. I like the feeling that I have a complete unit in front of me. I totally get why a lot of people feel differently though. The cleans distorting does seem like an odd problem though. I know the IRs can be turned off, so you’d be able to run it into something like the boss IR or into your DAW and use the IRs there.
Hmm, I haven't had any trouble with the clean tones with mine, and my guitar has SD Black Winters in it. After adjusting the gain and amp volume, did you try adjusting the master volume on the side of the unit?
There's another volume control called something like preset volume. You hold the tap and alt button then dial the delay knob to adjust it. You can do the same with the reverb knob to adjust amp presence.
It’s the amp encoder knob in the middle that you turn while holding alt and tap to change preset volume. There are a whole bunch of alternative settings like presence and noise gates that you can control this way with the other knobs
The problem in the video is there's too much gain somewhere in the signal path. A volume control can't alter the signal, so whatever the fix it, you'll need to alter gain to do it.
I actually like the lack of software and simple UX. I love having the physical thing rather than sitting infront of my keyboard and clicking endlessly. True plug and play.
Sounds really good. These young kids need to go back and find a Pod Bean, Johnson J Station, or a Zoom 505 to really appreciate what is available these days.
I think the reason you weren't getting a clean tone is because you had the overdrive on. The DIST knob has to be turned all the way off to disengage the overdrives completely. And once you were on the "SPECIAL" amp setting, which is more of a "Dumble" style amp, which are almost always used for "edge of breakup sounds." Stick to the CLEAN amp with DIST all the way off, and I think you will get a decent clean tone. BTW, I have a POD Express and love it. I've recorded the guitars for my last 6 or 7 videos using it exclusively.
Some other guy commented here that there is a way to increase volume without the gain. He increased the gain. That's why it's distorted. On a regular amp you would just increase the output volume, not the gain. There are other combinations there with the buttons and the toggles for this.
The idea of this unit is to Plug and Play and most important to use your ears! many time we so much base our desicions on what we see on a screen, and thats a big mistake
Plug and play, minimal tweaking, good tone and at a GREAT price @ $179. 👌 What's not to like? There's a reason these things have sold out already and retailers are waiting to restock. They are incredible bang for the buck little units. I've ordered one and am waiting on mine to arrive. 🤠👍 I'll pair this with a TC Electronic Nova System and dual footswitch that I can mount onto a mini pedalboard. Throw the pedalboard in a backpack and go jam anywhere. My Kemper Rack & Profiler Remote will go outside when it's time for heavy lifting 😏 (pun intended)
You can change cab models as well by holding Alt + TAP +turning the amp model knob. I would go back and try adjusting the Master Volume (Alt + TAP + Delay knob) to get a better output without clipping. Theres even adjustments for the noisegate threshold and decay, and presence, all by using different buttons. Once you get the hang of it its super easy to dial in and allows you to get much better tones fairly quickly.
For the pricepoint and mobility, also, it’s super light and runs on AAA.. it’s a great practice/bedroom platform. You can add an ext foot switch to control del/mod/verb. It’s pretty flexible for its stock amps&effects
I had the Boss Ir-2 too, but I like the metal sounds of the Line 6 better and it is better suited as an all-in-one solution with a foot switch. I play it for practicing on an Everse 8 speaker and for mini rehearsals
Here's my question. You've selected an amp. You've adjusted the bass, treble gain and mid settings to your liking. You then change the amp. Do those bass, treble gain and mid settings you made carry over to the "new" amp you've selected or do you have to go through bass, treble gain and mid settings all over again for that amp?
Great playing! I got the POD Express after owning several Helix products. I actually like the lack of editing it's just plug and play. I bought it for the crunch channel really and it's solid straight into the DAW. For $179 it's worth it.
The lack of a computer editor would be fine if the editing user experience was OK, but good god, that is way too many features crammed into way too few controls. "The distortion knob controls the type of distortion, but if you hold Alt mode, it's an EQ and on Thursdays it's something else..." Just... no. No thank you.
i hate that there hasnt been a new format for effects. the first ones had the footswitch and 1-2 knobs you set and forget. now we have these super complex ground pedals be it a helix, quad cortex or even this pod noone could possibly operate with their feet alone. this line 6 even has a shift button you need 2 hands for. having to hunch over constanly when experimenting kills my back. but the alternative would be having a music stand on stage but that doesnt look right.
The problem of not having clean tones is because you don’t read the manual. There’s a command that allows to set the initial gain of the amp. If you set that too loud, it doesn’t matter how clean the amp is.
Kinda hard to demo something new and slightly more complex than your average pedal if you don't learn how to operate it. Read the manual next time. This just feels half-assed. Very disappointing video and I don't even like Line 6.
@@OlaEnglund He still had output with the preamp all the way down, you didn't (as I remember) so might be a setting!? (don't think its because of pickups, thats too weird I think,,,

Hmm, I haven't had any trouble with the clean tones with mine, and my guitar has SD Black Winters in it. After adjusting the gain and amp volume, did you try adjusting the master volume on the side of the unit?
