Agreed. 2020 and i'm watching in search of a new UPS. Quick funny story, 8 years ago around 22 yrs old, i bought a $135 UPS. When I couldn't stop it from beeping, I thought it went dead or was damaged. So i threw it away. Now i realize I simply needed a new $30 battery...smh. foolish youth lol.
I would say the "Cyberpower is garbage" narrative isn't true anymore, though. I've got a pure sine-wave, line interactive one from them, and it's protected me from many brown-outs and two black outs over the 1.5 years of ownership. I have three more in my home. My game consoles and TV run through one, the living room TV and AV equipment run through another, the networking equipment run through the third, and my computer and monitors run through the fourth. Not a single failure or issue with them at all. They've stepped up their game.

Kudos to your coverage of UPS. It's not common to see enthusiast PC channels covering UPSs, yet this is a very important device to have, with the appropriate size also (VA or watts I mean,) as important as the PSU.
The very first component I purchased for my build was actually an APC UPS with 1400 VA. Even before I had finished deciding all the parts I was going to use in the build, that UPS was already in transit.

Thanks for an important video topic and expert advice. I live in the Northeast. I also use battery backup on my cable modem and wireless routers. Keeps everything up and running during power blips and coastal storms. I have tested my setup and it lasts just under 8 hours. In my area area the cable utility is still active unless lines are actually broken. I do have generator backup power but power blips were driving my cable modem/routers crazy. Several times I had to call the cable company and have them reset the connection on their end. Since installing my backup power on the cable gear I have had zero issues with my cable connections.
Probably the most defining & detailed informative video about UPS I've come to find.

Your video inspired me to purchase a couple large APC UPSs for my network equipment, work, and personal computers. There was recently a large storm that fried multiple surge protectors in my house (equip was OK but surge protectors were dead), but all my IT equipment is safe even after multiple minutes of electrical noise, thanks to those UPSs. And the UPSs are still fine! I really like the AVR Automatic Voltage Regulation. If you ever revisit the subject, I hope you talk about that.

Well presented info that consumers should know. Power surges kill computers, and a lot of power issues occur that people may not even notice. UPS's are not a luxury but a necessity. And in all the years I have used them APC has proven to be reliable. Others not so much. Good job with this important info.
Had a battery backup a long time ago and decided to get a new one for my expensive build. I just went and bought a cyber power. Had no idea about the usb and software download. Just checked my box and sure enough there’s the usb and instructions to download the software. Thought the usb was for data pass through , lol now I’m checking to see if I had to connect the damn battery. It’s always said it’s at 100% charge so I don’t think I did. Had this thing for a year. I know about the warranty but I had no idea it was as big a deal as it is. Reading the manual now. Thanks to you. Might get an APC next time.
This is and will continue to be a intelligent and well articulated video that describes the use needs for various types of PC profiles people use. I have and certainly will reference this video for the future.
I've had the 1500 unit for the past 3 years. Just now have to replace the battery (and I was searching around and stumbled on this video). Great unit, I used it to keep my WiFi / Ethernet connection going while we lost power as well as a Intel NUC that I had running a web server. Great unit for that and kept everything up for more than a few hours. (Now I'm using it to keep the WiFi / Ethernet connection up, but a Raspberry Pi.)
Very well organized and systematic presentation regarding the benefits (necessity) of having a UPS. I was looking to upgrade a unit that's getting long in the tooth and to meet my current system's higher power needs. So, much of the info here wasn't what I was seeking... but, a very useful primer for someone not familiar with the very low cost 'insurance' it provides to protect a computer investment. But, his very full throat-ed endorsement of APC and rejection of other brands did effectively let me eliminate other options. Great video on the topic.
Very sensible video. I worked at a computer repair store for 4 years. And everyone of those 4 years we had customers and clients bring in UPS units that were fried or have fired computers. We seen about 10 a year. The least seen were APC units.

I too was wondering for a LOOONG time to get a UPS. I did not know that they can be connected to the computer to have it to auto shut down when I'm away from the computer so that it'll be worry free. Thank you very much for this video. Keep up the great work for some of us un-informed buyers like me.
I want to thank you for this video. Everytime a friend or family member buys a new computer or tv; I recommend a back-ups. When they ask why, I send them to this video for an explanation. Then they buy one on the spot.

A UPS is one of the best things I ever bought, 100% agree with what you're saying. I've got my NAS configured to automatically power off if it's running off of the battery power for more than a minute, it's saved me a few times.
How'd you do that? Does the NAS or UPS need to have this function. I've just bought a DS918+ by Synology but yet to build my new PC. Thanks. Maybe you only have the NAS set to turn off. I was hoping that my PC and NAS could be powered off.
My UPS has a USB cable that I can plug into the NAS, the NAS then recognizes it and there are various settings that you can configure when the UPS reports that it's running off of the battery. You can do the same thing with a PC, but you'll need to install software in Windows to get it working.
Jarrod'sTech Thanks for the reply. So, it can only shut down one or the other? Is there any problem with the NAS shutting down improperly seeing as the PC will be powered off by the UPS so there'll be no major file ops taking place to corrupt the data.
My particular UPS only has one USB port, so I only have it going into the NAS, not sure if you could also have a PC off the same one with some kind of hub, I haven't tested that, or looked to see if any other UPS units come with multiple USB ports.
From my understanding, with what I have I'd either have the UPS plugged into the PC or NAS to shut one of them down, I think that's a limitation of the unit I've got, so I only have it plugged into the NAS as that's more important for me, it runs 24/7 even when I'm not here while the PC is only on while I'm at home, so I'll be using it and can shut down the PC myself whereas the NAS needs to shutdown potentially any time I'm not around.
I don't think the NAS shuts down "improperly", it goes through the usual shutdown procedure, so it can take a few minutes to complete which is why I kick it off as soon as I can, after 1 minute running on battery, so it has the best chance of safely shutting down before the battery runs out.
Jarrod'sTech when I said improperly, I meant when there's a power outage. I was looking for one with two USBs but I think there's ones out there (above my budget though).
I'll maybe email APC to see if a hub would work.

Great video and great advice. I managed to snag a 900W CyberPower unit during Black Friday for about $120. FAR more power than I need currently, but hopefully I'll be upgrading my computer long before I need to replace it.

Thank you for the video. It was very informative. I'm a computer newb and just built my first computer...within hours the power supply blew up. I really won't know the extent of the damage until the power supply comes back or even why the power supply went south, but I do know that I'll have a ups the next time I plug in my system.
I have the Back-UPS Pro 1500 from APC, and it's been running very reliably for the past year or two since I bought it. I love how many features its software provides, such as self-testing the battery and the integrity of the device, a date on when it should remind you to replace your battery. As much as ~860Watts of total power is a bit overkill, that's okay; I have other electronics running on this thing, such as my HEPA air purifier, which I run all day, every day, to reduce the amount of airborne dust since I have allergies to excess dust and I'm sensitive to poorer air quality. The only essential computer equipment I have plugged into the battery are my main monitor and my computer; the speakers are plugged into the surge protected portion of the UPS, and my secondary monitor is on a different power socket and powered via power strip. I may end up routing the power cable to the UPS if there is enough cable length to get to the other side of my desk.
This thing saved my computer from immediately losing power and ending up having the risk of corrupt files and probably dead components (at the worst case scenario), since I know that my circuit breaker tends to be very touchy with a certain load of electrical usage on a specific circuit, and we have the rare severe thunderstorm that may put the whole neighbourhood on a power outage. Also it's helped keep my PC on when we recently had a blown transformer (causing a brownout, which results in an area-specific undervoltage, which is not good for a lot of AC powered electronics). Of course, being the smart person I am, I made sure it was turned off safely during this incident that took several hours to replace it with a new transformer. This UPS is designed to not supply AC power when it detects a significant undervoltage, which I'm glad it does that, because it's protecting your devices from potentially becoming ruined by the severe undervoltage, and instead continues to supply clean, reliable power and voltage from its battery, which I prefer to use my HEPA air purifier on the whole time, since it draws less power than my PC at idle.
What the heck does your HEPA filter have to fo with your ups? Is your brain imbalanced?
@@Tracker5111 He has his HEPA filter connected to his UPS, hence it's relevant (he just is listing all the things his UPS has plugged-in).

Always look out for the ones with AVR, automatic voltage regulation. It can prolong the battery life
i just ordered a true sinewave UPS from CyberPower, for today's PFC power supplies you get better protection with a true sinewave one and CyberPower has been great for me for so many years

I've been using a Cyber Power one for a few years and it hasn't broke. it's been working great
I have been using a APC Back-UPS Pro 1000 for close to an year, it was reliable for most part. But the Battery started failing last week, I raised a ticket with APC, and sure enough , they sent a technician within two days and replaced the battery for free.
Really seamless support, you don't have to break your head proving you case , and that too India.
Needless to say I am a loyal customer of APC. :)
I prob wont have use for a UPS for now but i still watch this video because of getting more knowledge.

Thanks for this, had my computer fried in a storm despite being plugged into a surge protector (it was only like a 20 dollar one in fairness) and there are frequent power outages in area so I picked up one of the heavier duty APC UPS’s for my next rig.

This is another one of those videos that pushes your channel over the top--practical tech. I'd gather a lot of people spend a lot of money on computer equipment and spend hours picking out the right components and tweaking for maximum performance and don't have a UPS or a sufficient one at least.

I just bought my APC battery back and surge protector and finished hooking it up while watching this video. I was working on a huge project and left my computer on when there was a flash of lightening and a power out! My computer suddenly shut off, hopefully, that won't happen again. I've been using one for my aquarium for years.

I've used a UPS for around 15 years, always APC. I have had one APC fail during that time. My latest APC is similar to the smaller unit shown. I have it for more than 6 years, and its on it's third set of batteries. I should be OK for about 3 more years before having to replace batteries.
I use it mainly for the modem, router, VOIP adapter and the house cordless phones.
Back around 2000 I had a cyber power unit with Line Conditioning 24/7. The place I lived had spotty electrical with the old time fuses connection all the units in the building (we weren't independent from one another) that power supply saved my system more tan once. It is defiantly worth the money.

After having so many corruptions from swap files and sudden power loss, I finally got a cheap UPS backup. I lose power a lot. Even if it only gave me five minutes, that's plenty enough.
The midlevel unit you recommended has been known to catch fire. I went with the amazon basics model.
I think these are a must. Depending on the amount of money spent on a pc it makes no sense to not protect it. I use the APC 1500 VA to protect almost $5k in equipment from power surges so I don't have to worry ever.

Most of these will last about 10 minutes if they are sized properly... 20 minutes if you step up one level...
My i7-8700K streaming PC, on the 1500VA unit, has about 20 minutes of runtime when actually gaming.

Ok, 1. I love this video, I was very on the edge about an UPS and now I totally know that I need one. 2. Could you do a review of the Cougar Panzer Max or the Cougar Panzer Evo? I love the looks of the case and everything that comes with it but at the price I am very conflicted about it. I have found some reviews for it from some sketchy low view channels and I do not trust them very much. I trust your opinion very much and really want to hear what you have to say about it. I bought a Cyberpower 1500 because of the Pure Sine Wave output form. APV is a stepped sine wave.

One thing I don't think you mentioned is that these units also protect against low voltage and high voltage. Unless you run a device like this which monitors the voltage, most people do not realize how much your house voltage can vary. It will surprise you.
Pretty much everything electronic I own is protected by a UPS... even my fish tank. My network equipment is protected by a SMART-UPS, and all my computers have the the larger units like the one you showed. I consider it to be cheap insurance. The only one I didn't buy new was the one on my fish tank, found it at a thrift store for $3, and put a new battery in it lol
I've had three APC UPS. My main one was the APC Back-UPS 1500VA and it lasted several years until the batteries went dead and I didn't replace them for one reason or another. I recently pulled it out of my garage was considering getting new batteries for it but there are a LOT of people on their website that unhappy with the software that comes with these to shut down the PC. This didn't seem to be the case with Cyberpower. There were also a lot of people dissatisfied with APC's customer service. Now, since this video was posted just over 4 years ago, I guess it's possible that the customer service has gone downhill and maybe upgrades to the software have been outscored to outside developers who can't code. Since APC was purchased by Schneider Electric in early 2007, I wouldn't expect this to be a reason for these recent issues.
The other 2 I had were the APC Back-UPS ES 325. When we had a power failure with one of them, this one actually didn't protect my GFI plug for my Xbox that I had plugged into it. When I reached out to APC's customer support asking why this would happen, they weren't very helpful.
I probably would have purchased another APC if it weren't for these reported problems.

I have a beast one and it gives me like 15 mins underload. Make sure you get a pure sign wave one though as some PFC power supplies will complain on a non PFC ups
