Poseidon never used his 100%, he was soooo arrogant and full of himself (he wanted to win by only use brute force to demonstrate that just that was what he needed to win the scanner of sasaki, he was so proud that for him using too much force for a human was a sin, a human don't deserve full commitment from a god) i really liked that, poseidon is the "avatar" of the superiority complex of the gods, and that's a huge weak point, if you act like that you can lose even of you have all the means to win

Sasaki literally goes through hundreds if not thousands of scenarios with how the start of the fight would go and died in all of them except the one that he decides would at least give him the highest probability of survival, if Poseidon had started the fight immediately with an attack he would probably have won, but Sasaki had gotten quite a bit of data from the time they took just standing where they were at the start of the fight, all of that and what you and the other people here wrote ended up being his downfall

Okay something need to be said about Poseidon he is not arrogant, at least in his eyes. His attitude his outlook and disdain for the majority of his fellow gods is to him the most natural state of being for he is a god. He despises his fellow gods and call them filth because they admire and rely on him and to do that is to admit in some capacity that you are lesser. And a god should not be lesser. He shal never look someone in the eye and let them live for to do that is to see them as an equal and a god has none. No need for support schemes or struggle if he wishes then so it shall be for such are the gods. I dont think predictability is a valid factor to judge the fights by. For starters, you can draw from the themes and tropes to accurately predict the outcome of each fight. While this one might be *more* predictable, it is not the only predictable fight by any means in terms of the final result. The only thing that's truly unknown is how we're going to get there. A story's job is not to "be unpredictable". It's like sex, the goal is to bring about a satisfying climax, not make you go, "Oh I really didn't expect that..."

Playing with the predictable is something that Better Call Saul is great at, especially if you watched Breaking Bad. We know the outcome of this one character, Saul, but before Saul he was Jimmy. How did he got there as Saul is the entire narrative of the prequel but made in a way that hooks you.
Predictability is not bad, it's the execution which matters.
Sasaki vs Poseidon executed the path to the outcme, perfectly.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE FIGHT IN THE SERIS

  • @matheusteixeiralemos2771
    @matheusteixeiralemos2771 4 года назад +234

This was my favorite fight so far. The lack of unpredictability of the result is made up for by the unpredictability of how that result will come to pass. We know Sasaki will win. It makes sense from a narrative perspective, but we also know his style is to learn about his opponent and then figure out how to defeat them via gruesome repetition, and that will simply not fly in this fight. He only has one shot.
On the other hand we have Poseidon, who is the epithome of godhood. A being so far above humanity that he does not even acknowledge Sasaki's presence for a good portion of the fight. We are told he is close to Zeus in power and then shown that he can even one-shot other gods. Not only that, Poseidon is feared enough amongst his peers that when he says someone never existed, everyone agrees.
During the fight itself, every time we think Sasaki has finally gotten the upper hand, Poseidon just doubles down and starts pushing harder. It gets to a point that the promissed victory just does not seem plausible anymore, and we start to accept that it might just be 3x0 for the gods.
And therein lies the beauty of this fight. We know Sasaki will win, we know he MUST win, but we simply cannot see how. Knowing is not believing, and when we see how much of a disavantage Sasaki is in, it's hard to have faith in humanity's greatest loser, so when he finally pulls through, it is cathartic. It feels like all the hard work and desperate efforts of humanity have finally bore fruit.

      @rrteppo 4 года назад +31

Honestly I want to see how this author makes other things because they seem to have a wonderful ability to tell a story. You get this tournament against gods where humanity has to win so you know how some of the fights are going to go from minute one because there is going to be a finals. Spoilers
It started off with a loss which is somewhat unexpected because it writes the author into a corner. Then Adam loses, but the author has set up the plot for a turn around after only the second fight. He then uses the underdog card to make the post Adam fight we all know should be a win into an interesting story. Then follows it up with a character we don't want to win so the readers can't tell anymore again, and when he does win then we are 2-2. That means going into the next fight we again have no clue. He has written this in a way that the readers will never be sure who wins in a tournament arc and the one guy who we do know was foreshadowed super hard in the previous fight and had a really interesting story.

I, too, would rank this fight as the third best out of the four official ones we've seen so far. However, I think it's importance of a fight is not thought about enough (at least, in my opinion). The gods are portrayed as these undefeatable beings, and humanity is portrayed as plain mortals who have no chance of saving themselves. In this fight, we are represented by Sasaki, a man who, despite failures after failures, picks himself up and continues to learn and grow. He is an example of that characteristic of humans that keeps us growing, improving, and advancing as individuals and as a species the same way Jack the Ripper is an example of humanity's dark ability to discard morality. The fact that such a man is able to defeat a god who is the epitome of a cold-hearted god shows that humans are beings who don't give up. We are beings who will get back up and save ourselves, even if salvation feels so far away. Yes, I agree that this fight was trapped under the shadow of Adam vs. Zeus, but the importance of this fight for humanity is not something that can be ignored.

  • @personagrand5674
    @personagrand5674 3 года назад +6

Sasaki vs Poseidon is thematically an amazing fight.
The first two fights were represented by two of the biggest names in human history in the eyes of the manga’s universe, The Strongest in the Three Kingdoms and the World’s First Man. Those were power moves that no one really expected to lose, but they did. Brynhildr was struggling to choose at this point, only for Sasaki Kojiro to volunteer himself.
Kojiro was not just the World’s Greatest Loser, but he was just an ordinary swordsman in a world where the likes of Raiden Tameemon and Adam exist. In terms of swordsmanship, Okita Souji was arguably a more obvious pick than him. He’s not a gifted genius, nor is he a famed warmonger. He is a man, who picked up a drying pole and thought it was fun.
And he was against Poseidon, the only other Greek God as known as Zeus. In the manga, he’s considered the most “Godlike” of gods. Whatever he said, goes, even if it was something like erasing his older brother from history. He does not even acknowledge the presence of anyone above or beneath him, because he is a “God.”
So the fight was between the most Godly of Gods and the most Human of Humans. And what won Kojiro his fight was the most powerful aspect a human has in their disposal, the ability to learn from their mistakes.
As Japan’s biggest loser, Kojiro had the time and experience to evaluate how he can win his fights over and over, hence his “ultimate scanner” ability. He’s always making decisions, reading those decisions and finding where he dies and how he lives. He paid attention to his opponent, while Poseidon took a while to even look at him. Sasaki’s ultimate reason for winning was because he never stopped learning from his mistakes and his opponents. He continues to age even after his death because he always learns, never reaching his peak.

I would love to watch you cover Thor vs Lu Bu, mainly because it gets a lot of flack for being the first fight and being kind of simple, even though I believe it works to its charm. Also, another thing that I really liked about this fight was the contrast between Posidon's and Sasaki's backstories, how one had everyone behind him, while the other had no one, how one treasured the bonds he forged with his opponents, while the other disregarded them and called them trash. How one looked down on all life while the other wanted to never stop looking up.

    • @crisisanagram3916

I have this theory that the overall result will end up with humans winning only the underdog fights. Highlighting questionable morality, gaining strength through losses, and so on feels as though the author is working towards a message that essentially is "The good thing about humanity can be found when looking at the bad things about humans". Humans will win, while proving that their inferiority to the Gods paradoxically is what makes them superior.

Well, the thing is Adam’s loss was a setup for the idea behind humanity’s victories so far. Even though Adam could match Zeus blow for blow, punch for punch, he was still less durable. Humans are flimsier than the gods. Even someone as ridiculously badass as Adam can’t win in a contest of strength. If humanity wants to win, they will have to fight smarter, not harder. Sasaki wins by being more flexible than Poseidon, more adaptable, rather than taking him head on as Adam and Lu Bu tried to.
Sasaki’s fight had to be the third (and thus somewhat predictable in its outcome) so that humanity’s dire straits are clear to the viewer. Going toe to toe with the gods is impossible. Jack won by being sneaky, devious, and treacherous, for example. He was smart enough to realize he has no chance against Heracles, and so controlled the fight from beginning to end through other means.
Well, that’s how I interpret the intent behind the way things have turned out so far, at least. I could very well be wrong.

The moment a man trains his strength and technique to the point he finally managed to cut the heavens.
The moment the father of all mankind, blind and beaten, catch a god by the hair to keep on fighting.
The moment humans as a whole, the amalgamation of all our experience and learning in the art of the blade, manages to draw first blood on the gods.

I feel like this fight had the deepest contrast in ideology of the series so far. Poseidon detested imperfection to the point that killed his brother as he was not worthy to be a god. Sasaki rose the level of gods by learning from his losses and constantly improving. Being a perfectionist was reflected in Poseidon's cold and stern personality, while Sasaki was shown to be very easy going as he was able to except failure and not get hung up on his flaws. The point of the fight was to show the we are not perfect gods and obsessing over failure will wear down on you and turn you into a bitter person. However, using your failures as lessons to help you grow is how maximize your human potential and prevent you from sulking over failure.

Round 1 has Thor being challenged but not really having to use any effort and just winning somewhat easily
Round 2 while Zeus wins, Adam keeps pace and shows even the God of Gods that humans can put up a fight.
Round 3 rides off that idea and finally solitifies humanity's first win, showing the gods they can't take humans lightly.

I just recently watched the anime of Sasaki Kojiro vs Poseidon.. and.. I don't really like how Sasaki is portrayed.
The fight shows a very deep meaning but it should be understood using the real portray of Sasaki and Musashi.
Sasaki was a master swordman, not really the underdog who never won anything, he was one of the best duellist of Japan, and he mastered the Nodachi and upon his skills he created a new school of fighting.. he was nicknamed "The Demon of the Eastern Provinces" he wasn't a random underdog..
On the other hand Musashi started trying to master a katana but then he found himself fighting with katana/wakizashi and he started mastering the art of the 2 swords.
both of them never lost a duel until that fatal day on the beach where Musashi killed Sasaki using his own style of weapon, the greatsword.
Now.. I wan't to point out a crucial thing, Musashi was the master of the 2 swords, Sasaki of the Greatsword. During the duel, Sasaki couldn't keep up with Poseidon using his signature style weapon, but than Hrist splitted herself in two gifting him the same two swords the one who killed him mastered, and during the final part, Sasaki's students mimicked the kata/cut of one sword but Musashi himself saw that the true potential and skills of Sasaki could be achieved with his own fighting style.
The fact Sasaki won using Musashi's way of dueling is a crucial point based on historical records, and for me that was the best moment of the duel. I do hope the writers will find a way to let Sasaki and Musashi to talk about this, Sasaki understanding why two swords are better than one for a Samurai.

the thing is, sasaki in the series is a master swordsman, but due to him constantly searching for stronger opponents, his talent wasn't realized as people just knew that he kept losing, not realizing it was because he actively wanted to keep losing.

It could have been something greater. There was a moment when Sasaki and Poseidons' eyes met and his eyes lit up, I though the author would make it so that Poseidon slowly start to Enjoy the fight, maybe he would be moved by Sasaki, maybe have him talk a little more. Poseidon was damn silent for the while duration of that fight with most of the inner monologues belonging to Sasaki. But Nope, nothing happened, his eyes went back to being blackholes the next pannel. IT'S A DAMN SHAME.
Edit: And because Sasaki was such an inspirational character, with many good quotes. I had hoped that some of it would've gotten through to Poseidon.

Poseidon is perfect. In his writing, mannerisms, minimalist dialogue. He's the other side of Thor.
Every little word Jab that Sasaki makes, the better he understands Poseidon. Even his fighting style is just... Power and speed, he doesn't do anything fancy, he's swatting away a fly, never giving it recognition, the exact opposite of Thor. Its fun, because apart from every 2 fighters in a fight being some sort of Ying vs Yang, you can notice even more details and parallels. I'm slowly becoming afraid of how well this manga is written.

This is easily my favorite fight so far. I went in knowing the outcome and was still moved by the triumph. I think the key is that the fight doesn't overshadow Sasaki's journey. It is enough to show that he has learned from his opponents, inherited the art of the sword, and honed it to the point of rivaling a god's perfection. The journey built his character, and the fight against Poseidon was the test that proved it. It's a little disappointing - why put all that water around the stage if you're not going to use it? But the decision makes sense. Too many fancy maneuvers from Poseidon risk detracting from the theme.

The coolest part of this fight is when it plays on a common knowledge of who Sasaki Kojiro was in real life. I assume that title of "the world biggest loser" comes from the fact that IRL he was a last opponent of legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi and everybody who researched this topic know Kojiro only as "last opponent of Musashi who lost (in a super anime way at that)"
Some other cool parts of the fight is that:
He arrived at the duel on a boat. Just like Musashi did on the duel with Kojiro.
When his volund broke he re-bankaided it into two swords and started to use Musashi's "Niten Ichiryu" which made Musashi in the arena to lose his shit.

You didn’t mention how one of Sasaki’s rivals in the crowd mentions something about if you lose both hands in a fight, use your mouth to hold your sword. This is perfectly mirrored by Poseidon’s desperation at the climax when he does everything in that quote, step by step.

Sasaki never truly gave up. Humanity's ultimate ability in this manga is the ability to continue to grow. Lu Bu, a man who fought tooth and nail for all of his strength, got Thor to enjoy a battle and smile like a maniac. Adam inspired ALL OF HUMANITY and fought even AFTER his death, refusing to allow his family and humanity to lose hope, refusing even in death to take a knee to his opponent. Sasaki LEARNED from his mistakes and with every single battle he "lost", he became stronger, combining dozens of swordsmen's styles and abilities and created the ultimate sword style that not only held its own against a god, but it also cut him down AND evolved further when he absorbed Posedion's speed. Jack AND Heracles proved that no matter if you strive for justice or evil, we all are human and we can always be redeemed. Our color may change, but Heracles proved that it is possible to fight with love in your heart and that you may change even the evilest man in history. The gods may be "perfect" but humanity has the ability to grow and exceed perfection. In fact, their IMPERFECTION is what made them all so strong. They never stopped striving to improve and grow, and as the manga states, the tip of the blade of humanity may touch the deep

So far this is my favorite fight. Sasaki represents humanity's ability to adapt and survive no matter the odds and become stronger than ourselves and come out better for it. I think Poseidon works because he's less of a character and more of a natural disaster. He feels nothing for the people he fights against, because things like that are beneath him. He's uncaring and torrential like a hurricane that destroys cities. It's a story of humans vs nature and how we've come so far, but still have places to go. That's just my take on the fight.

I think his greatest character development was that he stopped being selfish.
He stopped thinking “it’s good enough to beat him in my mind” and actually went ahead and fought to win on the first try

Poseidon never loses his composure, he's an overbearing antagonist. When his hand is sliced off, he doesn't even wince, he catches it, crushes it, and proceeds into his next attack. I'd say Poseidon was composed, he as a god, looked down on Kyojiro, even after losing his arm, looked down on him. The world's greatest loser never stopped trying nor ever doubted the capability of his opponent. Every fight in this show is amazing

I love this fight a lot more then most people (I personally put it above Adam vs Zeus and under jtr vs herc) and that’s mainly because going into the fight I felt like humanity was gonna lose every fight until they have to win and with the pressure they will get through it so I thought he was going to lose until I saw his backstory and then I realized this gonna be the first dub and it was great from there

I think there is another message to the fight that a lot people seem to be missing and i believe it is the reality of skill. What i mean by this is that what we know about poseidon is a bit vague and i might be wrong but it seems to suggest that it is water abilities that poseidon is the best at. This is significant in that it suggests that he has no real skill with his Trident and used it because he simply didn't think he needed his water powers. In comparison sasaki spent his entire life dedicated to the art of the sword and even after he died kept training. This is the exact opposite to poseidon and is why sasaki was the perfect opponent for poseidon.
