I’d say that only really applies to funny valentine when it comes to the examples in this vid. If Tenma killed someone then Johan would have won since Johans most chilling quote was "the only thing all humans are equal in is death" and if Tenma killed him or another person, it would have reinforced Johans beliefs that one of the purest people he has met can take a life. Anti-hero figures have denial, it is a strong trait with them. The other name that they are often called are vigilantes, while that may be true the consistency is that of their denial. Unlike heroes who seek to contain life and villains seek to liberate, another trait is that heroes often need love while villains require Fear/force a dicey understanding but the opposite of love if fear which is force or perceived force. Anti-heroes exist in this gray area where they either care or don't really care at all. For one thing is though they are consistent in chaos or order. A few examples and you do not have to believe me on this are Batman, Punisher, Gatsu, Griffiths, and next to many of batman's villains. The hardest part in classifying them is their actions and how they think. Which can be difficult because many times they have overlapping traits from other categories. Often the Hero themselves is just the main protagonist or main hunter of the story. WAR HERO DESTROY CREATE The bottom two are anti-heroes but are difficult reads when they overlap or are paired with the other two. For example Eren wanted to kill all the titans, and in that moment he would classify as WAR, but he also wants to save humanity so he is also the HERO in the same breath. So he's either going to have to choose one action to destroy or create or at the same time both because as one destroys something they also create at the same time.
Me neither, and I'm really digging the pacing. It starts off as annoying if you aren't interested in slow paced manga, but once you piece things together things get from 1 to 100 real quick and I love it

Oh yes...And the paradox truth was that he was right, but was already doomed to fail due to his personality and the whole system. Kinda funny. The real villain of the series always was the Sybil- System and it will be there unless someday we will see an "antagonist" with the same goal as Shougos, but with a different way of doing it. If their ideology is relatable and justifiable ,wouldn't that make them less of a villain and lore of an anti hero who does the wrong actions but with the right goal? For me I prefer pure evil, irredeemable villains with no sad backstory
@@azaka3720 I don't think so. An anti-hero usually takes vicious means to acheive a genuinely good end. Antagonists, because of some warped idealogy, take vicious means to acheive a vicious end. I mean, Thanos committing mass genocide to acheive "peace and prosperity" and yet leaves a culture in social ruination with a fuckton of trauma and issues--at the end of the day, is not an antihero. Sure, he sought to embetter the world, but instead of putting in actual work to help structure society in a meaningful way, he just killed everyone then fucked off and left the remaining few to deal with the backlash of his thoughtless actions. An antihero, on the otherhand, may be more moralistically grey, but they do have some sembalance of a moral compass that allows them to mainly side with good actions. Lisbeth from "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is a good example of this. As well as Jude from "Cruel Prince". Both have questionable moral alignments, but ultimately we can say that their end-goal is thoughtful and "good".
I enjoy the mystery of Aizen, like Johan he just looks empty but you know that there is a lot behind that lifeless body. For hundreds of episodes he was able to plan out almost everything. I love how Aizen was always one step ahead and that he was impossible to read
I've been loving Shigaraki from My Hero Academia. Laugh all you want if you've only watched the anime, but you HAVE to read the manga to see why he's become such a great villain. Either that, or wait until season 5 of the anime, because it will cover an arc wherein Shigaraki is essentially the protagonist and the antagonist is the leader of another villain faction. We get to see Shigaraki's "origin" per se, and why he parallels Deku so well. The other members of the League of Villains get time to shine too. Big Phantom Troupe vibes.

I also am a big fan of the "anti-villain" archetype that you sort of brought up, when the antagonists have noble intentions in mind (that happen to be morally grey).
@@Grayson-Winchester Not really, he's more of a neutral character later on. He has his own plan with Eren. Plus Zeke's definitely no villain if you read further in the manga.
The only RUclipsr i saw that was talking about Griffith like someone neutral that actually enjoyed the Masterpiece Of Berserk! And not some grown ass Fanboiist. Respect and ofc subscribed.

Suppose that you were sitting down at this table. The napkins are in front of you, which napkin would you take? The one on your ‘left’? Or the one on your ‘right’? The one on your left side? Or the one on your right side? Usually you would take the one on your left side. That is ‘correct’ too. But in a larger sense on society, that is wrong. Perhaps I could even substitute ‘society’ with the ‘Universe’. The correct answer is that ‘It is determined by the one who takes his or her own napkin first.’ …Yes? If the first one takes the napkin to their right, then there’s no choice but for others to also take the ‘right’ napkin. The same goes for the left. Everyone else will take the napkin to their left, because they have no other option. This is ‘society’… Who are the ones that determine the price of land first? There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role… Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the ‘losers’. In the case of this table, the ‘eldest’ or the ‘Master of the party’ will take the napkin first… Because everyone ‘respects’ those individuals

That's a fucking brilliant idea. Imagine an antagonist who used to be friend with the protagonist but turned to villainy because of the protagonist. That would make for an interesting dynamic.
For me a good antagonist is one who can be terrifying, but in a way, relatable As many ppl say, the antagonist and the protagonist are two sides of the same coin So having a protagonist that can feel human, that can feel like something or someone who in a way, could exist in the real world, makes it almost perfect Take Kira Yoshikage for example, he's just a normal man who just wants to live a quiet life But one single flaw makes him the bad guy, his weird fetish for severed hands That shows us that everyone is just one slip away from becoming an antagonist themselves, one single bad day can make you the " villain "
The thing is an antagonists doesnt always have to be this deep and morally grey person like you said. They can just be evil but well written enough to be evil (i.e Madara, Doflamingo, Frieza, e.t.c) That's all I wanted to add on. This video is extremely well made!
For me one way to tell you have a good character is when people question their motives. Take Askeladd for example, many people think he is an Antagonist when really he is just a bad person and in some cases he is the protagonist.
@@surajkarki3511 I don't mean to say that he is more of an protagonist than Thorfinn (which is why I said "in some cases") but in parts of the prologue, especially towards the end of it, he is the main focus where as Thorfinn is somewhere in the background.
@@dorkknight7225 Simple explination is: Protagonist-Main Character Antagonist-Opposing force Protagonists don't need to techincally be "good" and the antagonist doesn't need to be "bad". I will say this person's use of the word is incorrect, although the point they're making is sensible and valid. There can be multiple protagonists (or, more promptly, secondary protagonists) but usually the story revolves around one person.
11:42 This is why the elites are in my opinion some of Superman’s best antagonists. While most of them are underdeveloped as individual characters besides the leader, they dominate Superman not by power, but by social status. Their method of just killing the bad guys with no remorse makes the population start to root for them over Superman, and tensions between them escalate as they try to solve the same problems. Sure Superman could easily kill them, and he almost does, but he’s challenged to win, and be pacifistic to show the world that the elites aren’t in the right.
Incredible video! I love video essays, so I'd like if you did more in the future. Only one point: Doflamingo didn't directly make Luffy achieve 4th Gear. Luffy was capable of doing it since the time skip, but he likely didn't want to use it until the right moment (knowing the risk). Doflamingo was that moment. I love that the Strawhats were so strong after the timeskip that they were kinda just breezing through the Fishman and Punk Hazard arcs, and then Dressrosa hit, and that's when they realized the _actual_ level of the New World.
What I’m getting is that there are two steps to making a great villain: 1. Putting in the work of creating in depth characterization, rooting their actions in meaningfully explored philosophy truly inspected even if it is morally wrong. 2. Making them so fucking hot, oh my god 🥵
Pucci: Literally kills the entire cast of his part in order to bring a peace of mind for the entirety of humanity based on his warped ideologies that stem from horrific coincidences that occurred early in his life, causing him to fall from grace as a priest and progressively become more antitheistic in his thoughts and actions. His character forcing us to ponder, that if something is fated to happen, do we at all need to accept any responsibility? Funny Valentine: rapes kids, loses to a cripple flicking fingernails at him, hahah america go brrrr
Yet Pucci failed at killing a little boy. Sure, two Joestars sacrificed their lives for him, but still. Pucci could control gravity to such a wide and precise scale that he could reset the universe, but he got his soul erased to some O2. The main cast even got to lead better lives smh what a fool, checkmate, Catholics, shouldn't believe in God or the past 40 something years get irreversibly changed. At least it's only the past 40 years.
Madera from Naruto and zukos dad sorry I forgot his name but and freiza and my number favorite antagonist is makima from chainsaw man those are my 4 favorite antagonists
A great antagonist is if they feel like an actual person with realistic emotions that absurdity change who they are, as a example Griffith. Griffith was a simple knight with a band of people but his intentions was to simply gain power for whatever means necessary, this led him to become a fucking human raping demon that torments Guts for satisfaction due to Guts was being praised and was a better leader than Griffith. I think that’s an amazing example. Edit- the complexity of the character and how they can change the element/atmosphere of the story when he’s in the picture.
Never really got the Hype of Demon Slayer, Tried it but I was already ready to give it up at episode 2 but I just TRIED a little more but in the end I gave up at episode 7. I really don’t get the hype.
11:43-12:04 Alright, I’m just gonna say that GOOD GUY SUPERMAN is not boring. Superman’s main conflict stems from his origin and who he is. His body may be alien, but his mind and soul are human, which leads to some very interesting dynamics. The issue is, most writers don’t take advantage of this, and write the same old boring stuff. If you want an example of a good Superman series, please read All-Star Superman and Superman: Red Son!
Rachel from Tower of God really encompasses the opening quote. The only thing she has going for her is her goal. She has nothing but a goal and even with nothing she still is one of the most intriguing antagonists I've seen. But Kira Yoshikage is still my man.
For me, the best villain is Blackbeard from One Piece. Driven by what he wants rather than just being an obstacle for the hero? Absolutely. His introduction? He gets three, first with us learning his name and the awful things he's done, then we're introduced to a character who looks and acts like a comedic side-character but has the complete opposite tastes to the hero, establishing him as a foil. And finally the third introduction where the name and reputation are added to the person we've met. Pushing the narrative? So far his impact on the world has been much bigger than that of the heroes. Yes sir, I do like Blackbeard.
Small suggestion: make the volume of the intro and other sounds match the volume of your voice. Having an intro noticeably louder than your voice can dissuade people, especially those with sensitive hearing, from watching the video
• Dragon_Flame _ right now he is an antagonist. We don’t see him since chapter 123 (except 130) and we follow Mikasa & co trying to stop him. He is the ultimate threat of the manga so I guess we can say that he is an antagonist.

@@Mepphy99 fax, that’s my biggest flaw with him. He’s made out to be a perfect man basically. That’s why I think itachi being incorrect on how the aftermath of his death would turn out gave depth to his character. Even geniuses can’t predict everything
@@Mepphy99 Aizen and Yhwach are the goats. Aizen is my fav antagonist honestly. I dont understand the super villain of the series argument, makes no sense as the villains benefit the aspects of the story like no other imo. Perfect antagonists imo.
What I learned during my publishing writing days, is that good villains are built in the same cloth as the protagonist, meaning they have their own drive, passion and reason for doing what they do, and it's something people can understand in both a simple and deeper level. One trick our senior writer taught is that should you flip the story, the antagonist should work as a hero.
I agree with a lot of what your saying…… accept the part about Superman. When you have a character like Superman, you don’t just challenge his power. That’s what most writers usually go for, showing off his feats of strength and power, but it makes the story kinda devoid of emotion and weight. So you don’t just challenge his power…. you challenge his morals and ideals. Antagonists like Lex, Darksied, Braniac, etc. constantly do this and try break his character and see it the way they do. That’s what makes great Superman stories, so when characters that are equal to his power finally show up, it’s that much more satisfying. Btw I’m kinda tired of evil Superman. It’s kinda gotten stale for me since it’s so overused.
I think a good antagonist is one that constantly pushes the protagonist and the story further resulting in the protagonist reaching new heights... or lows.
But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?~Mark Twain I hope you understand why this quote is relevant to this video
Crazy when u think about. It really forces u to look at the reasoning behind people and their actions, versus just dumbing it down to they do bad so they're a bad person end of story.
On a side note there was a saint who prayed for Satan's salvation and claimed to have been visited by him. Satan told him to stop it as god was the one in the wrong. Truly one of the greatest written antagonist.
@@raziel69sin Sorry to say Its been years since I heard about it. I remember it was some form of orthodox priest who was talking about it. I tried searching it just now but google has given me a mess of different things and even more rabbit holes lol If I find out who it was I will post.
This is actually very well explained not only for what makes a good villain in anime, but a good villain in practically everything (stories, movies, video games, etc.) In a comic series of mines, I feel more compelled towards the antagonist of an arc rather than the true main villain of the entire series. Sure, the main villain is the big OG, but I first wrote him as a kid so I didn't make a *deep deep* backstory for him(I kinda did when I got older). But the one I'm currently focusing on was one that I barely wrote about as a kid and I was able to construct him to be a formidable force against the protagonist because his story relates to the hero(just in a genocide-like route), is the protagonist of his story and feels that people should honor him more than the protagonist (since the protagonist is the pacifist version of him and obviously gains attention for his good deeds), and turns to the main villain to help him gain power far more than that of the hero. My protagonist obviously loses to this encounter and is aware that he needs to be on his level in order to be equal in terms of power(before he and everyone dies technically) So yeah, you did a great job explaining what makes a good villain 🙂👍

I really like how you talked about antagonists. Also can you talk about anti-hero figures in a future video?
WAR
HERO
DESTROY
CREATE
The bottom two are anti-heroes but are difficult reads when they overlap or are paired with the other two. For example Eren wanted to kill all the titans, and in that moment he would classify as WAR, but he also wants to save humanity so he is also the HERO in the same breath. So he's either going to have to choose one action to destroy or create or at the same time both because as one destroys something they also create at the same time.

@@azaka3720 Humm I respect that , what I said in the last comment was purely my subjective opinion

I have such a big problem with making antagonists. I keep growing to love them, so then I make them more loveable and then I end up redeeming them.

Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?~Mark Twain
I hope you understand why this quote is relevant to this video

This is actually very well explained not only for what makes a good villain in anime, but a good villain in practically everything (stories, movies, video games, etc.)
In a comic series of mines, I feel more compelled towards the antagonist of an arc rather than the true main villain of the entire series. My protagonist obviously loses to this encounter and is aware that he needs to be on his level in order to be equal in terms of power(before he and everyone dies technically)
So yeah, you did a great job explaining what makes a good villain 🙂👍
Step 1: Be blonde
Step 2: Be evil but understandable (optional)
Great video about antagonists! This is probably the only video on antagonists mentioning superman instead of the joker :D (valid point, though!)
