The way johan is connected to every character and you don't realise until after, he just snakes his way through everyone and even manipulates us as an audience.
Which is why he is made a villian tho.
Just brilliant writing, how everything wraps up in the very last chapter is amazing man, and without plotholes, shit that's crazy
@@BeeruzChrysler Have you ever watched an horror movie? Like, an actually good one like the OG Alien or Halloween? Or maybe Suspiria?
Just go rewatch Alien.
When do you think the Xenomorph is at its scariest: when it is on screen and you can see it, and the characters can defend themselves, or when it's offscreen, hinted yet hidden and never fully shown? When it's a sound in the dark, a movement in the corner of your eyes?
When it's behind you and you don't know it, just to turn around as it lunges at you, killing you in an horrific way before you can react?
Johan is written like a killer or monster from Horror cinema.
When you see him in the flesh, you see Johane Liebert, the human, the mortel.
When you hear about his actions and see the result of his actions, he is a Devil, a corrupting force of absolute Evil that can make people dance at his whims and change things as if he is 30 steps ahaed.
The story teases you with answers being possible: a human or actually a Monster?
The fact that people don't get it's absurd.
@@BeeruzChrysler You missed the point so wasting time is useless but i'll try.
The two comparisons don't work, period.
That's a sudden kinda plotpoint kinda plothoel, Johan is ESTABLISHED to be such over and over. And we also know his modus operandi, actually.
He is simply crazy good at reading people and their motivations and even better at acting.
That's... Really it. When he wanted to look like a random assistant, he did it.
When he wanted to get a group of neonazi to believe he is the new Hitler, he did it.
He can talk 5 minutes with a child and make them jump down a roof.
He can destroy the life of an established surgeon simply by killing a man in front of him and making him feel guilt and regret.
That's the point. We have enough to understand his methods, and our imagination feels the blanks with the scariest shit possible.
And any fucking way, "trying to make an horror" with goddamn marvel superheroes shouldn't even belong to the same sentence as ACTUAL horror cinema.
Not the endless deluge of trash, the actually scary or at least interesting ones.
The Hills Have Eyes isn't scary because of the cannibal with a chainsaw, but because that cannibal live and acts in broad daylight. Not hidden in the night and shadow, he will just overpower and butcher you.
It was legit a novel horror concept in the 70s.
If you are a child and need to see stuff on screen... Well that's your bad, really.
A great strength of Urasawa writing is exactly this mastery in showing JUST ENOUGH, but not more than that.
When in 20th century boys there is an actual psychic, you don't suddenly turn the story into an hard magic system to explore the implication. He simply uses it to imply to the reader that Friend being ACTUALLY supernatural is a possibility.

Johan truly scares me. He scares me because of the fact that he can exist. Monster is very much grounded in realism. Redefine the meaning of a Monster in your mind. The philosophy of the show. The psychology of characters. The characterization of the entire show is amazing. The pacing of the anime is slow at start, and the animation is pretty decent. But it was made in 2004. Also, the anime redeems itself in the end. This is why Johan is my favorite anime character and Monster is one of my favorite anime series and manga.
Another monster novel soldified my fear of johan. The fact that people like him will exist no matter what generation and era, there would always be a monster.
Well said

@@_stylish.b0y394 1. Doesn’t matter if you are on his side or in opposition. If you are in his calculations you most likely be dead.
2. No remorse whatsoever.
3. He can exist as your best buddy.
I find Johan relatable, do you think you are worthy of watching the final scene?
Kid Johan is just so creepy. He is scary and dangerous all through out the series but the kid version of him gives me shivers.
Yeah, like what the hell was up with him. It's almost like the only emotion he felt was bitterness
Well it was his most troubled phase in life, evil kids are often used in many horror settings the reason is simple, they represent two opposite forces colliding in one being, kids supposedly known for their innocence and purity used as a catalyst to represent evil. What Johan went trough was a phase of confusion that started with never getting a name, losing or better yet never acquiring an identity, robbed of that he’s an empty shell wich only purpose is bringing upon destruction and end existence. But if he has a common emotion to us I think it’s the pain and trauma deriving from the experiments he went trough
Craziest thing about Johan is that the ending proves he's still human.
Why is that the case according to you ?
@@pinkmatter8488 When he reveals to Tenma that his mother almost casted him away, to me it felt like he's still just a scared child that felt unloved. Throughout the series there are multiple children that were on the brink of going psycho, but someone would always save them. Someone would always make them feel loved. No one tried to save Johan, and that's the saddest part about him.

How is he human? Actually throughout the whole story you wonder if this guy is supernatural or not. Because the events made him sound like something beyond human. 🔥🔥“The Nameless Monster” story Can explain the Author’s logic; like a Sharingan Artists have the ability to use many styles at anytime. However Johan’s character in Monster’s plot does not require any “World Building” his philosophy is that no matter how grand a structure is: it can come apart from the inside. His character serves to deconstruct the world around him. So if anything if time went on the world around Johan would have been empty’ just like at the end of “The Nameless Monster” tale’. the Masked Man has done an excellent job of explaining the 2 perspectives with 1 story.🔥🔥🔥

I have always seen monster as (one of the) best manga to delve into the topic of good vs evil, and nature vs nuture. Johan is the evil that harmed a lot of people, but many of those died because inside them reside evil too. and also the best twist ever, for the whole manga the author convinced us that johan is the prime example of ‘born evil’, and that despite not being the person seeing a bunch of people dropping dead before him, he’s still somehow turned mass killer. Yet in the very final chapter, the detail of their mother giving up on one of the child is revealed, and we cant help but think, maybe it’s not nature after all, but nuture at the most subtle of work. Maybe, just maybe, had the mother fought just a little harder for them both, the nameless monster wouldnt have been born …

What are you talking about? Monster is widely praised by pretty much everyone who has seen it, it isn’t “underrated” at all
@@wobblecrash I'd say Monster is Underrated among the general populace. By general Populace I mean people who watch the Mainstream stuff. They aren't that much into anime. Most people don't know Anime beyond Naruto, MHA, Deathnote etc..They don't actively take part in the Community or watch a ton of shows. There's nothing wrong with that. but for people who actively take part in the community, it is not underrated.

Do you even know what underrated means? This manga and anime is critically acclaimed
Johan simultaneously makes me feel bad for him and as if merely watching him on tv is enough for him to kill me
Bonaparta‘s resemblance to Siegmund Freud is striking - both living in exile, both being kind yet extremely morbid.
And a few words about Johan: the ending is even more impactful if you consider that it wasnt even him who got abducted for experiments.
His talk no jutsu could've manipulated Naruto into becoming a rogue ninja. I can just imagine him exploiting Naruto's memories of the village treating him like a monster.

One of my favorite aspects of Johan is how in the first part of Monster, he almost only exists in stories and legends. Every character Tenma meets has been affected by Johan in some way and so Johan feels like he is a boogie man, a story made to scare children. It is through these other people that we see Johan's true power and how terrifying he is. The mere mention of his name leads people to kills others and themselves under his name.
Four years ago I was young and got into Monster via a RUclips video. I only watched it for Johan and had a odd crush on him. I didn’t realize until I got older how messed up the story of monster really is and how terrifying Johan is as a character. I learned about the actual story and how human everyone was except for Johan. Even the scummiest of people were still human but Johan was not and almost nobody who went to 511 Kinderheim are human either. It’s interesting to see now how different people can deal with trauma and how somebody like Grimmer, who was involved in the same experiment as Johan, can slowly learn to live like a functioning person in society meanwhile someone like Johan can lose all signs of humanity. “The devil disguises himself as desire” is a perfect quote for Johan.

Came here after literally marathoning this show. What a fucking masterpiece. Seriously this was top 5 best shows I’ve ever watched.
I think that the element which really makes Johan such an amazing, intriguing, impactful and well written villain it's his brilliant and realistical interpretation of the Monster that is inside all of us, the interpretation being his existence itself.
Wolfgang Grimmer's death ripped my heart out no lie. Sure, Johan was supposed to embody pure evil while Dr Tennant embodied pure good but for me, Grimmer's monologue about why it's horrid to destroy people's sense of good and evil answered the nihilistic problem Johan posed. The drive to find meaning in life is our greatest burden turned gift, and to an extent, a need.
I really like grimmer because even though he is stripped of all of his emotions, he still strive to be a good person unlike say, roberto, who underwent the same thing.
Dr Tennant lmao
Grimmer embodied struggling for his redemption
Someone: *opens their mouth*
Monster: it’s free real estate
What i like about monster is the plot progress , it’s truly magnificent and well written , and the characters is one of the most amazing characters in Entertainment , starting from johan who looks as humanly as possible but he’s the true Evil incarnation and this speaks a lot in our world , what a beautiful manga and it’ll be among my favorites .
as Johan said there are only 2 people in the world, him and his sister, who he also considered to be one and the same. He saw the worst in people and he truly believe that there is only darkness in the world. He is smart and capable of manipulating people's mind and heart to do what he wanted, much like the head of a cult. It is not exagerated to say that he is truly an agent of death, a monster - which is the embodiment of fear, and that fear is constantly spread throughout every single character in this manga. His evilness and twisted view of the world probably all started when his mother decided which child to give away, and later until his sister came back and told him all the hideous thing that had happended at the red rosemary mansion. Though I believe he is just pure evil right from the start as a human, the events that followed only to show what he is capable of, a story of an unwanted and nameless child (which he probably absored from his sister and endured it himself), a story of seeking entertainment for his sole desire and meaning of his existence. I believe that he is still the same child inside, the child that want to play with the ants and watch them suffer. And as in the beginning of the video, he is a monster with 7 heads and 10 horns, with the power being the evil ideals given by the dragon which is the Nazi, the blasphemous names probably related to him having multiple names living with different families and finally kill them all.
The Antichrist isn't going to be looked at as pure evil. He will be accepted by all peoples. He is what the world wants for themselves.
If you say "pure evil", then you have to know what you're calling yourself.
I also think that the Antichrist wont know he is the Antichrist. I believe he will do all the actions stated in the book of revelation not in the name of the great deceiver but in the name of God. That way he brings down the closets that we’ve had to a christ like figure in centuries and once again deceiving the world.
No he will know he is evil. Except those days should be SHORTENED no FLESH SHOULD BE SPARED, to paraphrase of course.

What are you referring to? Yes, Satan and the Antichrist are evil. But "everyone does what is right in their own eyes" says Judges. No one considers themselves evil. hot take and i liked this story a lot, but what frustrated me throughout the series was 1. johans unexplained omnipotence, appearing at every spot he needed to without any explanation and knowing things that didn’t make any sense. and 2. the other characters inaction, i.e. tenma not killing johan at the library. love the aesthetic and slow burn and characters in an otherwise incredibly realistic anime.

i honestly hard agree to this. i unfortunately didn't get THAT far enough in the manga (like damn i feel like i've been chowing down on some 100 or so chapters but actually somewhere in the 50s chap, like dang) but i kinda dropped it at the time because i felt like Johann is just... everywhere. i know he's supposed to be the huge invisible mastermind type of character but sometimes it just felt a little bit too much. too much omnipotence, not really enough him... well struggling? everything always goes well on his end with little to no problems at all while dr Tenma always get the short end of the stick. again i know its supposed to be the point but its really miffing me. that aside i really do love all of the characters in the manga though, even Johann (love to hate that is, so characterization is on point). some stellar work this manga have

For me personally, Johan was one of the greatest antagonists in anime because you could really rely with him. He was never driven by hate or personal gain he was just following a path he envisioned before his eyes. He was too perfect for society and that's is probably why so many people ended up following him, because for them it felt like they were finally being completed. He could of easily conquered the world if he wanted to but he was able to get to a higher understanding of life and that's why no one could touch him. Honestly there is so much more I want to say about him but I think if Johan was here he would just say something like: " Nothing really matters anyways so why not just die" xD

But the thing was that isn't Johan's goal, he doesn't want absolute evil, all he wants is to protect Anna.
Anna was set up from the beginning to become The “Monster” given she was the one who actually endured the experiments. Her tendencies are shown in glimmers throughout the show. The heartbreaking twist to it though... is that the only reason why she DID not become the beast, was because SHE ( unlike Johan ) HAD KNOWN REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
-Johan’s love and sacrifice is what kept her safe from the darkness he knew very well. He got his hands dirty to shield her. He chose to leave her behind in the care of her foster parents, knowing she would forget him, in order to heal.
He chose her than himself over and over; becoming her shadow; choosing to lose his only attachment to his already weakened identity in order for her to heal.
His love for her is why she never became a monster...and tragically, why Johan had.
In his own twisted way and view on things, he was protecting her. He killed every "parental" figure they had because he was betrayed by every adult figure in his life so far. People who mentioned calling the police, ended up finding out about their past - anything that could lead the man, who Johan referred to as “The Monster” into finding them, he disposed of.
The adults in their lives thus far would betray them, torture them, hurt them, throw them away- and forcefully separate them. In his severely abused mental state, any adult figure was a potential threat to his and Anna’s safety. So he’d kill in order to runaway from "the monster" and protect Anna. Then when Anna found out about the blood on his hands that fateful night the Monster paid them a visit, he realized that now he had become someone Anna feared - a different kind of Monster but all the similar to the one they were running from.
So he rationalized that now he needed to die.
In that moment, I think we should focus on his body language and expressions. Johan faced the ground. hardly picking up his eyes. His shoulders were sunken and he did not have that menacing little smile he usually had. Johan has killed in secret various times with Anna and back at Kinderheim.Initially, we are made to believe Johan wanted to “consume everyone” so he would be the last one standing. The Monster known as Johan in the book also devours his counterpart, the Monster who went West and then there is no one left to call him by his name. But clearly, Johan never does this, because Johan never attempts to kill/devour Anna/Nina - because what it symbolizes is entirely different in nature regarding Johan’s intention.
A quick reminder that both Johan and Anna were considered Nameless Monsters. HOWEVER - by Johan’s hands, Anna does not remain “Nameless” nor does she ever become a “monster” the moment Johan decided to not only leave her behind in the hands of a loving family, but by her changing her name and her identity to Nina. The Fortners never made any implication that they knew of Nina’s past concerning the Lieberts murder and I believe this is because Johan introduced her as Nina to the Fortners and never allowed them to see the trail behind her identity as Anna Liebert.
Symbolically, Johan, as the Nameless Monster, consumed the Monster inside of Anna and became the only Monster left. This is what is mirrored in Johan’s intentions and the Nameless Monster storybook.
With Anna forgetting him and Johan leaving her behind thus losing his only connection to someone who truly knew him, now all that is left is Johan, without absolutely anyone to call him by his name - the one and only Nameless Monster.
