- ■ SRI LANKA, GALLE: Looking for things to do on the outskirts of town in Google Maps, I came across a Sea Turtle sanctuary operation. A family, with the help of volunteers and donations, have set up Sea turtle shelter on the beach where they nurse injured sea turtles back to health as well as rescue newly laid eggs from the dangers that lurch on the beach.
They dig-up and collect thousands of eggs and re-bury them within a fenced area, nursing them until they hatch. Then they set them free back in the ocean. They also help sea turtles damaged by fishing nets and propellers heal from their injuries (when possible).
Join me as I tour their facilities north of Galle city on Sri Lanka's southern coastline and get a fascinating look into this incredible operation.

Amidst the chaos in the news at the moment this was a great breathe of fresh air! This guy seems devoted to his turtles, what a great dude. Brilliant video as always Harold
i know! he is cute, and it is cute how he loves them.
Pretty difficult seeing the ones who had multiple limbs missing. With injuries that extensive, I wonder if they'll ever be able to adapt to swimming again. If not, they will sadly have to depend on captive care for the rest of their lives. It's great to learn that the fishermen who find these turtles actually care enough to bring them to places like this and give them a chance at surviving.

I was just in the Maldives recently and a lot of the staff where I stayed were Sri Lankan and I must say they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met!

@Harald Baldr i was always sceptical about these places. This guy is honest. Also i was listening to his call looks like someone has stolen his money. I thought that will be useful information for your Harald investigation! He said not al the "money was stolen and not to worry" looks like it was his family he was asking if they had lunch and he had hardly eaten. Poor guy real innocent man!
I think it's visible in his eyes and the way he talks. Seems like a simple and genuine guy. But he's a hero.

Harald Baldr very true! I live in New Zealand and the hospitality industry is affected pretty badly and thousands will be jobless in the coming weeks or months. However, the NZ government touted a 12.1b economic stimulus package to keep businesses running and to help people survive.
I’m a Sri Lankan and I know that our government is not in a position to do the exact same there. First we won a 30 year civil war and was experiencing a slow economic growth (suffered from a tsunami during the war too). Year by year it gradually increased with every tourist that entered through borders. Economic boom failed after the terror attack last year, yet people were hoping for a quick recovery given that it was a “one-off” attack. Nek minute it was the Mexican beer.
Mexican Beer is everywhere and there’s no proper remedy yet discovered. Every country and its people/economies have been hit badly - it will only get worse in the coming months.
What you did last year by showing this island nation to the world made people come back or know that we exist. You have always shown both good and bad sides just as you see and that’s why we love your videos. Having known your channel and being a fan of yours for nearly two years - it still makes me excited to see a new video from you. Literally every time I get the notification. You have done so much to increase the foot traffic in borders since last years’ attack and it worked really well. You still keep doing and we’re so very grateful and thankful to you. Thank you heaps! We will keep watching your videos without skipping adverts as a token of appreciation and gratitude, as long as you run this channel!

When you come upon one of these huge turtles in the open ocean, far from shore, you really gain a respect for their place in nature. To think they survived from a baby creature smaller than the palm of your hand...

I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I spent a month working with a sea turtle charity last year and it was the best time of my life, sea turtles are such brilliant creatures! I can't wait for your follow up video!
Where did you volunteer and what did that entail? Sounds like an interesting volunteer job
@@HaraldBaldr I volunteered on the Greek island, Crete for a charity called Archelon. On Crete there isn't a problem with turtle eggs being stolen or disturbed much so they get left on the beaches and it's our job to patrol the beaches every morning and look for new nests and monitor the nests that have already been laid. When nests start to hatch we spent a lot of time following baby turtle tracks from turtles who ended up around the beach instead of making it to sea during the night, and we would help them get to sea. That is If they were still alive at this point, sometimes we might get there too late and they've been killed by an animal or dried out in the hot sun. Thankfully this didn't happen all too much. It was also our job to respond to any emergencies involving turtles on the beaches at any time of the day such as people disturbing nests or distressed mother turtles coming ashore during the day. If you have any more questions ask away. We primarily dealt with loggerhead turtles so I saw a lot of the type of baby turtle you were holding!

Sea Turtles are so precious. I remember surfing for 3 months (attempting to) living on bananas, broke as broke can be, and stuffing the peels in my rashguard to feed to the sweet sea turtles as I sat on my surfboard, beyond the break. It was beautiful.

As others have said.... given all the sad news going on, the stress of keeping well and safe, we musn't forget the world keeps turning. That man was wonderful and he genuinely cares. So lovely. The way the turtles came up said a lot about the fact they knew they were in a safe place. I hope you get to go on a releasing trip tomorrow. I am now off to google to review that place.

I am from an area in Florida where the loggerheads come to lay their eggs. It is on the gulf of mexico and every year when it is hatching time you have to turn off all outside lights so that the turtles go into the ocean instead of going toward the lights. Beautiful animals. Harald I think this guy deserves the monthly money to go to him. Amazing
