The cost of living and culture are the two key things that brought me happiness after moving to middle income countries. Life is just full of possibilities when your money goes further. Same reason why many in South America move to the USA. I don't consider myself an expat, I am an economic migrant. Just not one that needs to work locally.
Really well said, it’s surprising how much of an impact not fighting tooth and nail for basic necessities makes for a person, and how much a culture can help boost them up
There are multiple reasons why I feel better and happier in Peru than in the US, but there are two really major ones that I think would apply to a lot of people.
In the US, I feel as if I'm constantly being extracted from and targeted for scams, even by "legitimate" businesses. It's like there's an army of people out there whose whole existence depends on roping people into egregiously bad deals (usually crushing debt), and they're quite good at it.
I also feel as if I'm under a perpetually heavy load of propaganda-even as someone who blocks internet ads and mutes TV/radio commercials. Now that I've experienced the absence of this for long periods, I feel it acutely all the time here, businesses and other institutions trying to hammer thoughts into my brain against my will.
It's not that there are no scammers or thieves or propagandists in Peru. They just haven't totally overrun the whole country. It's possible to live your life without having to deal with them all the time.
It’s completely true, one big one is the private student loan sector. They are so practiced at handing dogmatic views down to nieve people, and locking them into bad deals that messing them up for life
There is an "Incabucks" in Ollantaytambo instead of Starbucks :)
that's mad funny, I had no idea, that's gonna be an upcoming video XD
Whelp, its not a secret anymore lol
