  • @catluvsdnp
    @catluvsdnp 4 года назад +38

    This was my favourite experiment to study in psychology. When I heard about this and did research, one of my thoughts was I wanted to know what would have happened if instead of cancelling the experiment, they switch the roles around. The guards became the prisoners and the prisoners became the guards, I'm curious whether they'd do the same thing, and take revenge on the guards who treated them that way, or maybe they'd do the opposite and treat them with more respect

    • @laurencesdaddy6392
      @laurencesdaddy6392 4 года назад

      Don't wanna be a Loner would be chaos lol

    • @tomhardy116
      @tomhardy116 4 года назад +1

      It would be pretty redundant because most would respond in a vengeful way. The point of the study is it is just human nature to act this sort of way once given power, so there's no reason really to believe that they would respond any differently. I am confused though as to why they made the guards wear sunglasses because I understand it takes away the chance of making a bond or relationship of sorts, but it also isn't realistic.

    • @tomhardy116
      @tomhardy116 4 года назад

      @G W assuming you're a prison guard or something?

    • @tomhardy116
      @tomhardy116 4 года назад

      @G W ah fair enough. I do think there naturally is a conflict between the guards and prisoners as prisoners obviously have issue with authority in most cases, but I do think there is also issue when people have power over others and that it can be abused. Not exclusive to guards but we see it in every day life.

    • @tomhardy116
      @tomhardy116 4 года назад

      @G W it sometimes is a systematic issue. I agree that responsibility for actions is important, however not everyone is gifted the same hand in life. Others aren't gifted with parents who emphasise the right track or education, or even parents at all. So as a means to 'get out', they sell drugs because it is the only way they see possible. Having been close to making the same mistakes, I get it. I just had a mother who put me on the right track, not everyone does, unfortunately.
      I get what you're saying, but I don't think that's applicable to everywhere. 100 prisoners unlocked with 2 members of staff does not sound plausible at all, and an extreme example but an example nonetheless is Rikers. Guards and prisoners working with one another and running the prison, but guards definitely playing a massive role.

    there's a couple movies made because of this study. one is called The Experiment that stars Forest Whittaker and Adrien Brody that i had to watch as part of my psychology GCSE and it really captures everything this experiment wanted to achieve. then there is a more recent movie made called The Stanford Prison Experiment which i think is slightly more accurate so i really recommend watching them both!!

    This experiment was based on Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse in 2003 during the Iraq war. Another unethical study was Milgram's 'teacher and learner' experiment using electric shocks - you should look into them, would love to see a video on either one!

      Zimbardo wanted to conduct a study to see whether the abusive behaviour of the soldiers in Abu Ghraib was due to their personality or their environment - so he came up with the Stanford prison experiment

    There was a similar-ish experiment (in that it was a group of people given different roles - but this time it was about racism) that Jane Elliott did where she told primary aged kids that the colour of their eyes determined who was more intelligent, and gave the children with the preferred eye colour special privileges. It was a way of showing the children what it's like to be black (this was in the 60's when she started doing it I think) I know there was a film made about it called Eye Of The Storm if you're interested in talking about more experiments Jordan.
    That one, this one and the one with the gorilla learning sign language are pretty much the only one's I remember from college. Oh also the electric shock one by Milgram! That's super interesting. People were told to administer electric shocks to what they thought was another person and almost all of them went so far (even after screaming and begging) that the 'participant' getting shocked went completely silent. A test on obedience
    There was also one that a Baron Cohen did that I remember only because he's related to Sacha Baron Cohen

    100% agree with your conclusion there mate. Had this boss in Homebase who always used to be a twat, I talked to him about why he acted this way when our store closed down. His reaction to my confrontation was that “it’s just how businesses work” My thoughts on this statement was that why treat people under you the same way your higher ups do if u don’t like it? Anyway, I think this is an older generational problem as the understanding of mental health and emotional side of people is just not understood by them.
