Apple architect picks a small prefab to savor CA countryside

  • When BJ and Danielle Siegel began planning their dream home in the hills of Sonoma County, California, they wanted something light on the land. “Sometimes when people build a house they want to express all the cool things they can get into a house and for us it was kind of the opposite,” explains BJ. “We wanted to do as little as possible and make it a comfortable place to live.”
BJ, an architect who’s also head of store design for Apple, didn’t have time to babysit a build, but he was enamored by the customizable prefab design weeHouse. Created by Geoffrey Warner of St. Paul Minnesota’s Alchemy Architects, the ultra-minimal design is based on a simple box with two walls of sheer windows so the landscape takes center stage.
“I think a lot of people don't necessarily buy into the idea of less is more. I think a lot of people think more is more. And they add features and they add complexity and they add size and it makes them feel like they've actually gotten more and I think it's much more difficult and much harder to actually get there through doing less. That's the fun challenge.”
The Siegels also realized that in the pricey San Francisco Bay Area, modular builds that could be nearly finished in a factory, were a lot cheaper and easier to construct than site-built homes.
In order to create enough space for themselves and their teenage son Jules, the Siegels opted for two boxes placed at an angle from each other (to create privacy). The larger box houses the kitchen (on one wall), open dining room and a box for Jules’ bedroom (with the bathroom and shower tucked behind it). The other box is BJ and Danielle’s bedroom and bath with again a box unit in the middle that houses their closet and separates the space.
“I always feel like really great architecture is like a really great poem. You have to work it work it work it, you reduce it down to the things that only say what they have to say and you get rid of everything else and that's where the sweet spot is for me.”

I think the comment are so critical of him, because the house doesnt reflect what they want to see in a "tiny" house (not that small), but I think it is great that we see different kinds of small living spaces. This one isn't built at all to be off grid or on a budget. It is a house for a small family that obviously has money and the house is very design driven, so it is not as functional as some of the commenters want see. I personally would build my house a different way, but I think this one is inspirational and interesting.

Jens this house is like a restaurant meal of kale and Brussels sprouts and also ounce of wine that costs $250, where people talk about how much fun they are having. I don’t dislike the people, i just don’t like the architecture. I find it totally corporate. So yes, a clash of mentalities. Unsettling. It creates more questions than answers.

I love these "simple" beautifully designed little dwellings but are the rich going to be the only ones to afford this while affordable housing in cities that depend on middle class workers struggle and suffer with five roommates in a two bedroom apt. ? TLDR:
What I wanted to see: ”Apple exec quits jobs to become self-sufficient”
What I saw: ”Apple exec adds minimalist weekend role-play to maximalist lifestyle”
I’ve come back to this video several times the last few days. I’m super fascinated by the inner conflict it provokes in me and seems to do with many other commentators.
It is very impressive estate from vision to execution. And I recognize that in architecture minimalism is foremost an aesthetic. For me though, minimalism is a way of life. It’s the reason I love this channel; how it gives so many examples of people finding different ways towards a simple lifestyle.
Even though this is clearly not such an example I’m happy you made this video. It’s an example of a corporate executive using the aesthetics and superficial elements of a simple lifestyle as weekend role-play, ADDING it to their conflicting urban lifestyles making it completely unsustainable. It is diluting the concept of minimalism and simple living. An example of what not to strive for.

I think you don't understand how much work is involved in designing architecture, or even becoming an architect itself. Everything is very complex to figure out, because every project has a new site with its own unique conditions. The reason why some architecture is so easy to understand, is that an architect put in the hours to design it to read clearly successfully .

"....the glass wall is sacred.." The bathroom is not shut my man. Now I understand where Apple's fluff comes from - its just an extension of an in-house conversation that the people there have genuinely bought into. Reminds me of Jobs "You're holding the phone wrong" when the product didnt work properly. My dad would correctly say, "Bullshit baffles brains". I still like the vast majority of the house though and I do love the simplicity of the idea.

I agree with "the whole world can look in but you cant see them when inside" reality. The opaque Japanese sliding doors are far superior imo. I think the day time advantages to glass are there, but some privacy as you mention when on the john/ in the shower etc are good things to have. I guess, to each their own .

Loved his enthusiasm for his new house, hey I feel you bud, I'd be that excited too!! What a view & what a simple & sweet home.
Plus I liked to hear him full of joy that spilled out in laughter so easily. And he was too funny "You must respect the glass" when he was sharing how come the restroom door didn't close all the way in the big house.
His wife & son all seemed like genuinely nice, down to earth, humble, simple people. Honestly it was nice to hear them all laugh together, so much love going around.
Seriously this is what people are missing, love, joy and laughter. For me it's a prerequisite, it's what makes life worth living.
Well all in all loved this home and it's inhabitants. Glad to see you all enjoying your life one with another; that's what family is all about ; )

A thought just occurred to me why I might be becoming more and more compelled to living within a smaller, con/restricted area.. Perhaps at my age, mid-40's, nostalgia has become more prevalent in my thoughts.. I close my eyes and can almost see, hear, and even smell my old 6'x2.5' childhood bedroom closet which my grandpa helped me empty and clean to create my own "Nintendo tournament training area" ;) We crammed some thick blankets along the floor and put one of those large corduroy stuffed back pillows against one wall and a small TV on a stand with shelving on the opposite wall. I probably spent more time in that closet than I did in school ;p

he's an architect so of course he is going to sweat the details and look for the join that is seamless and efficient: that is what I would expect and want from him. For an apple architect I think they are humble: yes the house isn't cheap and the pool is amazing, but compared to what he could have done with this money I think they are very grounded as a family and live simply. I would love a house like this and possibly another room as a work room atelier..... if and when I retire somewhere where I can be warm .... like Majorca lol....

Absolutely fantastic. I'm undergoing a personal research to, later on, start building a home just like this concept: centered on minimalism.
What fascinates me most is how everything naturally connects and how little it interferes with the surroundings. Taking the connection with nature is so important and it appeals to me a lot mainly because I'll also live within a mountain range in Puerto Rico.

I'm obsessed with this house. It's utterly simple, warm, and beautiful. The galvanized stairs connecting the two units breathe ergonomic elegance. The corten steel disappears into the landscape. The swimming pool provides much needed relief from the harsh sun and stone. Upon first glance this home looks like it's made from two shipping containers but with patience the details reveal themselves. The line between house and nature are blurred. Most importantly, I love this family. You could tell they are genuinely good people. All the best to them.

LOL. GOOD FAMILY? THEY DON'T ALLOW THE DOG IN THE HOUSE!
How SLIPPERY is METAL when it RAINS?
Definitely NOT ERGONOMIC ELEGANCE when the steps are not spaced for a human gait!!
How ERGONOMICALLY ELEGANT is climbing over doors to get in and out of the son's bed everyday, or to make it?
NOTHING IN NATURE IS SQUARE!! NOTHING.
NATURE does not create squares of any kind.
The House Design is Not Nature Harmonic!!

Daniel" AND, a complete lack of personality and imagination. I'm very much for minimalism (stop buying so much crap and get rid of all the crap you own), but if your home looks like an Airbnb, I think you've taken it too far. What happened to showing our personality through the way you live, through your home? People who want to hide their personality by living such an extreme minilimist lifestyle worry me. Makes me wonder if they're serial killers who want to leave no clues around.

@@arx754 By your reasoning, Ed Gein must not have been a serial killer for openly displaying his personality through his human-derived decorative pieces and being the opposite of a minimalist, more akin to a hoarder; oh, but wait--he *was* a serial killer, which goes to show the absurdity of your reasoning. Your comments reeks of toxic cynicism and envy. And of course, you've obviously completely missed the point behind minimalism. It's analogous to Jeet Kune Do---discarding that which is not useful or needed. That in and of itself it an expression of personality. I empathise with people who appreciate simplicity. However, lacking empathy, not personality, is the hallmark trait of serial killers, which you've just bungled. You've given yourself away. :P
