Aussie couple builds off-grid mobile home with 2 containers

- Paul Chambers had began building a home out of two shipping containers as a project, but when his wife got tired of suburbia and put their four-bedroom home on the market, his project became the couple’s full-time home (Paul’s ebook: www.buildshippingcontainerhouse.com)
Paul and Sarah Chambers were living in rural Scotland when Paul received a job offer in Australia. They packed their belongings and moved to a large home with a pool in an Australian suburb. After only a few months, they began to tire of spending so much of their income on their home. They also felt they’d lost touch with nature and a more active lifestyle (“there weren’t even any trails for walking”, explains Sarah).
So they sold their home and moved with Paul’s “project”: two shipping containers he’d been transforming into a kitchen/bathroom + bedroom/living room. They found someone willing to let them park their new home on their rural property in exchange for making improvements to the land.
When the couple first moved onto the property, the home was a very simple shelter and over the following three years, they built the containers into a proper home.
Their home is completely off the electric and water grids. When they first moved to the bush they used a 3kw Honda generator, but they’ve since installed 2Kw of photovoltaic panels and a bank of batteries and phased out the generator. They have enough energy to power their home with all its conventional appliances, including a standard fridge/freezer. For heating, they rely on firewood (collected from fallen trees on the property; they have “not cut down a single tree”). For air conditioning, they use fans and AC “during really hot days”.
In the beginning they had to rely on water deliveries, but Paul has since installed an extensive rainwater capture setup- both on the roof and gutters beneath the home- which provides for all their water needs: 65 square metres of rain water collection in 10,000 liters of storage. The indoor bathroom includes a shower, but Paul built an outdoor, open air bathtub which they heat with solar in the summertime.
They’ve also created an extensive vegetable garden inside a netted garden cage (after the animals and hot sun destroyed their first attempts). For eggs, they have two hen houses.
Paul has published an ebook explaining how he built the home including a step-by-step guide: buying and moving shipping containers, a wiring diagram and schematics, installing solar panels and a breakdown of costs.

Such a great video to watch. I feel that I got pretty lucky to randomly stumble upon this. RUclips is the reason I don't do cable anymore. You won't find anything this golden on TV. I'm seriously considering trying to live this type of lifestyle. Seems like it would be a nice break from this hectic life that the majority of us live. There is more physical labor required, no doubt. But the freedom your mind would attain from this lifestyle must feel amazing. yeah, go easy on yourself bro! You were working full time, had to periodically save funds to build, plus you learnt your way through on the fly. As far as I’m concerned you kicked a goal and have provided an educational experience to inform and inspire others as well. Hats off !!

We bought land in a remote, totally off the grid area in Alaska. Have had to ship everything there in the three containers we have planned to use as a home and one as a workshop. Contending with snow and ice adds a whole other aspect. Hard work. Large rewards. We love it.

Alaska is magnificent, and truly the perfect place for living off the grid. I can certainly imagine the challenges of working on construction in that ever-changing environment.

Rosary we will only be finished in a year or two. Typewriters here are harsh which only leaves a couple of gorgeous summer months to get work done.

Agreed, but there is one that shows that the guy turned the containers upside down so that the bottom is the roof. His video explained why that was better. Worth searching out if you're going to build using containers.

Thank you Sarah for sharing your story. I appreciate the effort it took for you both to not just settle (in your case in the 4 bedroom suburban home). At times it can be easier to settle for convention then put in the work to craft your life/home. I can see all the hard work it's been (particularly living through 3 years of construction), but it seems it has paid off.

when i started i thought - no way am gonna watch 40+min of this....it was interesting and learnt show much. couldn't believe I reached the end. We hadn't planned how to manage washing clothes, proper piping and waste in ours and this just gave me an idea. Also, the idea of solar really helped. Thanks.

I'm jiggy with all the structural bits, and can noodle my way through the electronics, woodworking and power systems. Oh, and I need a friend with a huge chunk of land like that I can play on....who d'ya know...? :-)

What a lovely couple, and thank you to everyone involved in this project. It shows what life can be like and what it takes to make it happen in a straight forward, no bs manner. I’m storing this info with the hopes of being more self sufficient in the future. It seems like you can do a little at a time and add on from there as time, resources, and comfort levels line up. I dream about not being a wage slave, and living a life where I can be more true to myself. Thanks again for the inspiration and I hope to see more in the future. 🙂
Finally! A realistic look at building a shipping container home. It's not easy. It takes a long time and it's not always going to be perfect.
I like his idea for the ceiling and the lights. And the sliding door is a great space saving idea.
I hope it turns out exactly like they want it. I wish them luck and I hope they're happy in their off-grid home.

I also like that you show some trial and error and why you changed some items... the reuse of water set up for gardens is also great, and the "under-gutters" to capture a much rain as possible. Excellent.

In 2009 I lost my 4 bedroomed luxury house! Overnight I was reduced to living minimalist in an American RV. After losing the house, I was also involved in a near fatal RTC, this left me with brain trauma for 4 years, costing me everything else I'd spent 30 years acquiring! My next loss was my beloved Mum in 2014 after nursing her to the end with Motor Neuron Disease. Now there's just me left, alone and having watched your video I am brimming with envy! As a multi-skilled tradesman, and one who now shuns the trappings of house ownership I feel driven to follow your example. A massive thank you for making the video of your adventure.

Amazing lifestyle away from bills on top of bills. He said he's not a builder and not a gardener but built amazing container home, power systems, water usage, customize tub and fruits/vegetables fresh off the vines. He can survive in the wilderness.
I'm playing my annual game of "what if I had loads of space and the balls to actually do it" and watching dozens of container home builds. This is one of my favorates.

What I like best is your calm, mature approach that is reflected in this video! We lived in a tipi for 2 years at 6500 feet above sea level in Colorado. Had our own Native American sweat lodge and would roll in the snow to cool off. We both worked day jobs the entire time. So glad I didnt wait til I was old to do this! Me too..we bought an old arkansas homestead in National Forest, and built our farm while working construction. Happiest time of my life, but husband wanted divorce and moved to town... I have such memories 😊😊😢☺️

Paul's journey is an awesome one to watch. I highly recommend taking a weekend to watch his video series. It was nice to hear his wife's perspective in this particular video. She doesn't say much in their series. Great video!
I too have built a mobile home from a 40 ft shipping container. I have used spray foam insulation because in my climate zone there would be condensation buildup on the inner surface of the metal. I then installed drywall after the insulation was done. I won't go in detail, but there was so much stuff I had to research to do it right it was insane. I calculated the surface dew point for the condensation, then decided what thickness of spray foam I'm going to spray on. I have used closed cell foam that gave me around R 6 insulation per inch of thickness. Sprayed it on myself with a regular compressor and a paint addon but with a wider nozzle I drilled the hole wider myself since I didn't find one for sale. Got the foam very cheap form a pool insulation company. When putting up the drywall I had to invent my own metal profiles and weld them on the roof underside to prevent the roof from flexing inwards when walking on it. I used very thick steel omega profiles of 6 mm thick black steel, had to ramp up my stick welder up to like 250 amps to get good weld penetration. When the roof was strong enough I covered it with a thick layer of tar and then poured a 10 cm thick layer of concrete (reinforced with steel rods ofc) on the roof to make a rooftop like a balcony to be used to chill out on, I even welded on a 406L stainless steel fence around the edge/perimeter. Installed all stainless steel sliding doors and windows, I tried to avoid using wood wherever I could to make it timeless and indestructible, no termite worries etc. but it had to be corrosion resistant, and I know that the container itself is made from corten so that was fine, but I had to use stainless s. everywhere else for aesthetics reasons and that was very expensive. I won't even go into all the solar and generator stuff I did for electricity, I'll just say that I converted a diesel gen to work on cooking oil which I get for ~2 kunas per liter (0.25 cents), I also drive my car on that stuff. Soundproofed my gen too, programmed a couple microcontrollers (am a low level embedded programmer btw so that was the easiest part) to automate various things, like when the deep cycle batteries drop below certain voltage the generator fires up automatically; or a system I made to automate air exchange - it measures, via n of fan revolutions, how much air it took in vs exhausted, all of that so I could have nice fresh air in at all times, and it prevents condensation, it also automatically heats/cools the intake air via finned radiator bolted on the fan dependant on the outside temp; I basically made my own custom HVAC. I did everything by myslef, no outside help, It took 3 years; I have enough knowledge and experience now to write a book easily, but that won't happen since that is not my field of interest, and I turned from low level embedded programming to a full blown mmo project I took on recently, so there is no time either. I stumbled upon this video and thought I'd share my 2 cents of my experience "on the fly"/"inline" right here in the comment section.

I got really high, and I happened to stumble onto this video, and it was wonderful. I kept smoking while this video played in the background, I thinking it was just some short video. But then the video made me really happy and it surged a feeling of unity with nature through me.
I absolutely enjoyed this video so much that I've begun to have serious conversations with not only my husband but my youngest son and daughter in law about doing this, after all, they're the ones who'll be helping us, when we're able to buy the land and everything we'll need, to get off this damn grid. At 6:50 I love the way you had the two lengths of steel positioned so that when you completed the cut, that heavy piece of steel would conveniently slide away from you and outwards!! Forget pushing it out as you finish the cut, or even just letting it fall where it may.

These people are so admirable. I would have loved this lifestyle. One can make a bad choice early in life that one can never escape. This is exactly what I would love. I am a hard worker and strong but now at 76 and single will live vicariously watching the wonderful loving couples make their real world like this. Wishing them a long life w great health.
Loved every minute of this video. I don't live off grid, unfortunately, but I do try to be self-sufficient as much as I possibly can. I am a visual artist and I can make many things on my own, using wood, metal, cloth, concrete.... you name it. I also don't drive a car, don't have a cell phone or cable TV. Sarah is right: there is definitely a huge amount of satisfaction in living independently as much as one can. If I was younger, I probably would be more interested in finding ways to live off grid. Thank you for sharing this video.

What a great adventure, and you did a Great number of people a real service as to how to stop being a slave to the system. I admire what you have done and commend your wife in supporting your efforts in doing the right thing. I hope you stay healthy and safe. I know the growing your own food will benefit you both in the long run. I loved the part where you filter your own water. and what the water delivery guy had to say about his own water being delivered .too you all. I have a small lot in the Bahamas and would just love to build one of these set up's like what you have . My only draw back is that I'm 74 years old. @Charles Shepard, this is definitely an awesome video and nothing was wasted once figured out and repurposed. The compost from their waste, however, especially with those cows that he was shooing away at one point could be used to supply biogas for heat (instead of wood), cooking (instead of firewood, electric, or whatever they are currently using in their cooking system), and fertilizer (instead of just fertilizer only). I am originally from Jamaica (first 18 1/2 year of my life) and have now lived in the U.S (I will be 40 in Dec 2018) for most of the remainder of my life to date (not counting living in Iraq for 6 1/2 months, Afghanistan 7 1/2 months, and England 3 years....I am currently in the U.S military the past almost 15 years trying to get out now to go live off the grid...somewhere in the U.S....hmm, maybe I should reconsider and go live off grid in Jamaica....I am not certain yet....been doing research to see where in the U.S they will allow me to live off grid as it is not a simple as buying land close to civilization and being allowed to live off grid- can you believe that mess-lol).
So I want something super small as I don't really need much space, one room is fine. I would like to have my own solar panel, find ways to collect food scraps, etc from restaurants (etc) for biogas for biogas appliance (heat and stove), figure out how to have enough surface like these guys have to have water, repurpose the grey water (from shower, dishes, and laundry) to the biogas (my feces would go towards the biogas) and water a small green house.
I am currently looking at 0.16 acre of foreclosed land (ver tiny plot of land), if they don't have any restrictions so to speak in me having to build a "house" on it, then I am probably going to see if I can purchase it, even though it is 110 miles away from the law school I would like to get into when I can escape military life. I was supposed to be out 15 Aug 2018, but unfortunately, I have some unexplained health problems that cannot readily be figured out....they have just diagnosed me with good ole fibromyalgia. When it is said and done, I don't care about material stuff. I need a roof over my head for 3 years, then I want to also be gone with the wind from there and travel across the U.S for as long as I have the ability to travel. I currently have one paralyzed dog (she has become paralyzed from the waist down since 30 Oct 2017, I have had her since the neighbors threw her in my backyard as a 7-month-old puppy in July 2007, I was feeding her my table scraps prior to then as I didn't know they weren't even taking care of her even before dumping her on me), the second dog was the same neighbor, that I have been taking care of since 28 Jan 2008 (1 month old) when they got her...she almost died over Easter 2008, I took her in and nurse her to health....and took her officially as my own (even though I was taking care of her since day one). My favourite dog I picked up off the street in Nov 2007 (about 6 months old) was murdered by the city (San Antonio, Texas) in Jan 2014. I stole my sister's dog (6 years old) in May 2018 (in the event I had to put the paralyzed dog to sleep if she is suffering) so the Jan 2008 dog will have company. So I have 3 fur babies that need to be considered and taken care of....
Apart from law school and seeking to help humanity legally...I am researching the truth about life (and what is beyond what we can see), that is not so much this plain, but where we go after here. Though it is unrelated to this video and what you have said, I am getting ready to share with the world the flaws of not ONLY Christianity (of which I was apart of until my research started on 11 Feb 2018) but ALL religion and how they are ALL lies meant to keep us trapped and away from the truth. I don't know what the WHOLE truth is....after over 2200+ hours of research, I believe that Yeshua (the pagan name is "Jesus") was indeed a man that lived on earth when they say He did. And I believe that He learned the truth and tried to share it with us before He was murdered. He was able to share the truth with others, and humans found ways to butcher and hide the truth. My primary purpose is not so much to find food and shelter....but to find the truth and share it as best as I possibly can as I believe that the end of the earth as we know it is much closer than we all think (myself included).
