Simon Baker is such a good actor. Usually i know Patrick Jane as cheerful and cheeky or sad and in thoughts, but either way, his mind always wanders or analyzes many things at one time. Here, this is the first time, his mind is focused to a single thing, narrowed to the point of madness. He looks really insane, when McAlister reveals his tattoo.
Brilliant scene. In hindsight I should have noticed the sheriff was the only one not laughing/expressing shock when Jane said he knows one of the them is Red John. Sure he denied it when Jane saw the tattoo but I think he didn't want Jane to shoot him there and then.
@@Hanstein. As far as I know, back then (up to around S4 ending) the producers & writers didn't have a specific idea regarding who to cast as Red John.

Me, too, though my sympathy for Stiles dropped, when i remembered that the FBI was looking for him because of two homicides. But Haffner hasn't done anything to anybody. I felt so sorry for him, and there was never a mention in the show.
Jane's got that homicidal look in his eyes.. They *know* Jane would pull the trigger, in a heart beat. They're highly trained officers of the law who, aside from Stiles- though I wouldn't put it past him, could EASILY get the gun from Jane before he could pull the trigger, but they don't. Because they know, if even *one* of them, so much as LOOKS the wrong way, Jane would pull the trigger.... People say after last time, Jane doesn't have the guts to kill someone, just remember what red John did to his family... Jane's very capable of murder, he's proven that twice.. That's why no one even *attempted* to get the gun from him.. They know he'll go through with it.
i was 90% certain who is red john since the episode in that church town. its the only episode in the series where we had an unknown character make many appearances and important ones. also he was the only one on the list who was barely seen before in unimportant scenes. other small clues it was in the second episode of the series so its a small minor clue. he said something like people look different when they are dead. he came out of nowhere and creepily offered a ride to a red-head with red dress during the sting operation.

Red John was the only one who knew the real purpose of the meeting, and he ultimately intended to reveal himself to Patrick anyway (at least, before killing him). It would have been anticlimactic in his mind if he'd just let Bertram or Smith take the fall for his crimes (and probably insulting to his ego).
