Excellent. Just bought Kestrel 5700 Elite. Just went to first long distance precision shooting course. Shot 1200 yards and was amazed. Can’t wait to shoot a hog at 300 yards.
So glad for the sharing of you're experience and info you've earned in the college of hard knocks with this device, very very respectful of you're shared smarts, it's being well well received here by me and I'm most certain a whole lot of others as well . . . Thank You Sir 😊
I’m torn between this kestrel and the 4DOF kestrel. If I’m shooting bullets that 4DOF doesn’t have in their app, like an Accubond, will the 4DOF model be able to provide a solution? Or is this model best for any and all bullets?
Does the kestrel automatically set the altitude and air pressure or does it need to be entered manually?? Thank you for these videos I almost Returned my kestrel due to me being too dumb lol . These help out tremendously.
No it does not. You will have to use another source or input it yourself. GPS is used to calculate your longitude and latitude but the Kestrels are not equipped with GPS.
is the app that you are using "Kestrel LINK Ballistics"? I downloaded the app on my phone, do i have to have the Kestrel Weather Meter linked before i begin to even start adding a gun profile? only thing the app is showing a comment "Connect Device"...
I've got a question on aerodynamic jump ~ if you zero match day (assumed same value wind as wind 1 during zero), isn't wind 1 going to throw your range card off? There is no entry for wind conditions during zero that i see
If your muzzle/shooting position is sheltered from the wind and bullet first encounters a strong cross wind at greater than 10-30 yards from muzzle, the effects of AJ are impractically small and can be ignored.
Thanks for the informative video! In running some pre range test scenarios, I am getting the same results on the device and the apwhich I am happy to get! I am shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor 120 Match ELD Hornady and the results I am getting from the Hornady Ap are about 1.25 MOA different in E and 2 MOA in W. I loaded a 13 mph wind from 44° with a 181° shooting angle with a 547 yard target. The Kestrel calculated a .28MOA Wind which I find strange for a 12 mph cross wind. The Hornady Ap is about 2.25 MOA. What are your thoughts?
If you have consistent air flow over the sensors then yes. I would avoid setting up the kestrel in direct sunlight if possible, especially in light winds.
What's the difference between the AB ballistics app for iphone and Kestrel Link Ballistics app with AB for iphone? Would their be a difference using the Kestrel iphone app vs the AB iphone app?
Why is it that I have to bring my scope height data up 1-2 inches to get my data to match? Shooting a vudoo 360 20” mtu barrel with lapua center x 22lr
If you measure the muzzle velocity using a chrono, this would "take care" of barrel length as, IIRC, longer barrel length = higher velocity. The muzzle velocity is what matters for ballistic computations.
Hi Happy Thanksgiving. Excellent video. A question for you just got 5700 elite and learning along with your video. My first Nrl22 match is this Saturday and I’m at point when your discussing zero on scope. Here’s my question , I have a bergara b14r , I had a more or less perfect zero at 50 yards. I just switched to a mpa comp chassis and have only had one chance to get to range and at 50 yards it was shooting about a inch high. Unfortunately I forgot my scope Allan key and couldn’t adjust it. I was shooting into about a 7 mph headwind Do you think it’s different because of chassis or headwind. When I got home I turned zero back about .7 mils. Hoping it would be close to zero. I hopefully will have time on match day to check it but curious if you think chassis could’ve moved zero. Thxs Sean
I believe that the possibilty is very high for that to happen. It may not be the chassis that caused the shift it could be that the original stock was the culprit forcing your barreled action to shift. You will never know for certain unless you locked the barreled action into a machine rest and even then clamping the barrel in could change the harmonics though I think that would result in a group opening up or closing up. My mentor used a machine rest when he tested ammunition at 500 for Federal and the whole purpose to take issues like stock fit or torque issues out of the equation.
Thank you Sir for that great Video. It brings a lot of light into the Dark. You talk about a checklist that nobody forget important data to put in the Kestrel. It was very helpful to benefit from your experience as a PRS shooter.Do you have this List somewhere on the internet for Download?
- [ ] check that latitude is correct - [ ] calibrate the compass - [ ] capture environmental data in live mode than lock it - [ ] check muzzle velocity - [ ] shoot a zero to check zero - [ ] check point of impact then adjust ZH and ZO in profile - [] if possible verify data by shooting at distance before the match
What if you use a good chronograph, get a good reading, know the altitude, density altitude, temperature, station pressure and humidity and your bullet still does not do what the manufacturer says it does using the G7 model? Bullet jump?
Hi. New kestrel 5700 elite link user. Just wondering if you can help me, how do I send revised gun profiles from my kestrel to the kestrel app on my iPhone. My instance I’ll have all my profiles on my app and my kestrel, I true my muzzle velocity then want to send the revised data to my kestrel app on my iPhone. It seems to just make a new revised gun profile. It’s the same if I change anything on the app and append to kestrel. It just makes another gun profile with the revised data. Thank you Rich.
I've tried to use the Kestrel 5700 Elite with my FX-M3 .22 pellet gun, but I'm getting some radical come ups from my 50 yard zero. StrelocPro shows 3.2 Mils which is relatively close. My kestrel is showing 16.83 mils, not in the ballpark. I've verified the parameters, and they are the same on both devices. MV =980, DM= G1, BC = .90, BW = 28 (actual 28.5), BD .217, zero 50 yds, BH = 3.14" (20 moa rings), RT =1:16" R. I've checked, and it is set for Mils. Any ideas what I'm missing?
Awesome video. Learned so much! Great teacher. I have a question. I have a 20MOA rail on my rifle. How do I tell the Kestrel 5700 Elite to take that into account in the calculations?
Great question, everyone asks that and I don't know why they don't answer it in every one of these classes. The answer is you don't have to do anything, it doesn't matter.
Gee I would think you would want to hide the buttons that erase/overwrite everything and "make you really sad" behind another menu or at least an "are you sure you idiot?" message before it just deletes/overwrites everything.
Hey just wanted to say thanks Chad for taking the time to make this video

Thank you for sharing your expertise
Good video mate thanks 👍👍
Very informative video, thanks!
Thank you. You mention using the G7 ballistic coefficient, is it not better to use the Litz?

This model has more bullet profiles than 4DOF. 4DOF is primarily used for Hornady bullets.
Does the kestrel automatically set the altitude and air pressure or does it need to be entered manually?? Thank you for these videos I almost Returned my kestrel due to me being too dumb lol . These help out tremendously.
It does that itself. Buy another it is worth it to learn it.
Does the new top of the line kestrel auto inputs the Latitude ? In environmental or does that always have to be put in from another source ?
No it does not. You will have to use another source or input it yourself. GPS is used to calculate your longitude and latitude but the Kestrels are not equipped with GPS.
@@AppliedBallisticsLLCok 1 more question.
Should the latitude input all-ways be added for all solutions and any corse of fire position relocation.?

Question about aerodynamic jump. If you are shooting from a position where you are blocked from the wind at the muzzle will that negate the jump?

Are you able to share what the books were in the giveaway? Looking for more books to add to my library and read.
What you you suggest in this scenario chrono the gun with V3 input velocity but elevation doesn’t match actual data on target 👍
Excellent video! On windage between wind one and wind two, which one do I use for initial dial or hold? Thanks
From the Panhandle Precision video 1 is the constant and 2 is gusting.
If my Kestrel is on a tripod and can rotate freely with the wind, can I just leave the Environment on LIVE?
If you have consistent air flow over the sensors then yes. I would avoid setting up the kestrel in direct sunlight if possible, especially in light winds.
@@AppliedBallisticsLLC OK thank you!
Can u send a rifle profile from the applied ballistics app to this kestrel ?
Relative Humidity is not used to calculate Density Altitude. Only pressure and temperature. Great video though, very comprehensive.

It doesn't matter at all.

what if you will not use a "idiot phone" ? will an ipad or a Mi1 mac work?
iPad should work fine
Computer will work with the cable.
What do you do if you check velocity on V3 take the shot but actual drop doesn’t match kestrel solution 👍

Calibrate MV and DSF / use a custom curve or the kestrel library rather than the box number. Thats what I would guess.
I can’t send profiles to my Kestrel 5700 but i have received duplicates
Does the kestrel calibrate latitude or does that need to be manually input?
On the Kestrel it is done manually. When connected to Kestrel Ballistics App, it can be done using the phones GPS location through the app.
Does anyone have this except with no “Link” or anything like that?
Just a stand alone ballistic calculator with applied ballistics on it?
Yes u can buy it without link. You don't have to use the app. I don't.
Is this similar to the online Basic Class?
I want to buy
Kestrel 5700 Elite
for hunting. It's worth it?
If u hunt long range it would be useful. U can also use strelok pro. Being a hunter that what I would do.

Going from the kestrel to phone he said to over write not append. I think that's what your asking.
My scope is in MRAD that is not on the Kestrel
@@stevemaxey878 it’s MILS in the Kestrel as opposed to being labeled MRAD.

You don't need to. You have zeroed your rifle/scope combo with sloped rail already. All calculations are reffered to your zero.

Temp variation are far more important then pressure, how is that not important to you?😃
Bc his powder isn't temp sensitive.
Your firmware needs update!
pity about the sound quality, great vid otherwise
