  • Guys been looking for a square body Chevrolet to run for the winter, and it fell right into my lap. A subscriber reached out to me via email with a truck he was selling. I had just sold my 93 chevy S10, so the timing was perfect. It needs some work, so I'm counting on you for ideas! The great news is, she's got a lot of new parts on her, including a new engine. Let's check this thing out! It's a 1981 GMC K1500 4x4 with a crate engine!

      @@ryanmalin It's cool to buy a new car if you want to just drive worry free. On the other hand, it's not that dang hard for a guy to keep one of these classic going. So yeah I can see buying a new Silverado if this was your previous daily rig, but for a guy to just scrap it? No other excuse than laziness. At least sell it to somebody that will save on 'er, it takes somebody a hell of a lot more work to build a whole new car than to replace some wheels and shocks.

    Derek: bought a 74 Chevy truck back in 1977 was used in Bakersfield calif for $2,500.00 bucks one of the best vehicles I ever owned! 454 big block Automatic, had lots of miles on it ! Eventually the motor blew up, while I was working as a body man I was able to get a good deal on a brand new 454 crate motor long block from the Chevy dealership we used for parts at the shop. Like my 67 Pontiac Firebird, I touched every nut and bolt on that truck as I rebuilt everything on that truck making it my own + we used it to go on trips to go On weekend jaunts to Pismo on the beach, red rock in the desert, Death Valley sand dunes. We started an off road club called So- Cal off road. We had great fun ! I loved that truck pretty much as I did that 67 Pontiac Firebird! Wrenching gets in your blood! That’s why at 75 retired I really miss it! My body says nope! But I really miss working on cars trucks and the like! That’s why I hate this cold ass Colorado weather! I’m fixin to Chang that and move to Tennessee! I miss my square body ! This blue one you’ve gotten I great looking! I had both tires on mine the first set my wife bought were the wrong ones , big off road tires my wife bought noise’y bastards! Wore them out, then put road tires on it , big ones same size as your off rod tires! Loved them they were dam near as good off road as on! And quiet! We were young back then you put up with a lot more inconvenience when your young! lOL 😂 go with the big road tires! Great video Son ! Love your RUclips Chanel! -

    My favorite truck of all time. I was raised on square bodys. As a family we have a tradition of the square body truck. Something about em makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. You need very simple tools skill and parts to keep em running. They run forever aside from neglect and severe abuse. These trucks feel like family to me. I dont have one right now which is sad but everyone in one gets the nod from me. My new love is still square minus 4 cylinders a bed and 4x4. Old volvo wagons are just like the old ck trucks in a way. Ive used the old vo for all kinds of work. Taken it off road done incredibly stupid things with it on road and traveld all across the south for a while now. At about 300k miles (guesstimate odo stuck at 217k 10 years ago) i still daily it use it for work and long distance travel and off road camping. Brother if you ever comr across an old vo snatch on er. You wont be dissapointed with the versatility reliability and fun hoonage. I love big American cars and trucks v8s and hotrods it what i was raised on. Somehow a sweedish mistress has won me over. The cops never look at me twice its like im invisible to them in a bright red volvo it will do 120 so thats nice. Thanks love your work.

    Hey Derek, my two bits;
    Rather than 33 10.50's consider running some 255 85 16 Mastercraft Courser CXT tires on steel wheels. I think you'd like the skinnier tire in the winter . You could go with white wheels or two tone 'em with the body color.
    For a rear axle; before tossing cash at the 10 bolt maybe consider swapping in a semi-floating 14 bolt out of a heavy-half or light duty 3/4 ton. These axles are readily available with a 6 bolt pattern that would match your 10 bolt front. I'm not sure if your sweet 15" mags would clear the brakes though.
    Back in the day we'd pull the bottom leaf out of a lift spring pack (assuming there was more than two leaves) then before reassembling the pack we'd replace the plastic leaf pads with 1/8"-ish aluminum spacers to give each leaf in the pack room to "breathe". We'd just add the aluminum spacers to the two leaf front packs. By doing the above we managed to lose about an inch of lift from the kit but gained a measurable amount of ride quality. Of course this was 23 years ago and my level of acceptable rise quality is different than it is now. Cheers 🍻

    when I heard that dented up 1500 drive in, I honestly started to cry a bit. my uncle Rodger (great uncle) drove a lifted K1500, a white one but otherwise looked just like this, I grew up riding around in that truck, whenever there was trouble, he would show up in that noisy dented up truck and fix it, I learned to fish, hunt, fix things around it. I honestly didnt know how much I missed it and him, hit me like a sledge hammer. his truck lasted through three generations of my family and finally gave up the ghost to the northeasts winters in 2016 with my younger cousin driving it to and from college. I need to find another one I think, reminds me of folks made of iron.

He's been pretty happy with them. I had always been a BFG guy, but Cooper seems to beat BFG on price and durability. I stick with products I like, but I'm not a fanboy; give me a better product at a better price, and I'm there.
