After interacting with the fatui on the Chasm, I actually felt admiration for them. They are sooo brave and more than ready to cast aside their own emotions and even their relationships just so they could do their part just as the Tsaritsa, Harbingers, or any higher ups have ordered them to. Their higher ups just basically see them as pawns, not fellow country men nor human beings, and its so sad :(

@@randangbalado I got the same impression back when I first started playing this game. It's clearly the intent being made here, anyways...namely since all of the names of the Fatui we've come across are of a slavic dialect. Not to mention that the place the Fatui hail from is known for its harsh, cold environment. The writers haven't been pulling any punches, that's for sure. This being in the Shivada Jade Gemstone, I'm inclined to think the Cryo Archon is addressing this to the Fatui who also had to bear the weight of rebelling against the divine (Celestia). So they have been indoctrinated, that they have to pay their dues with war to the last drop of blood. The mission is more important than their lives. Tsaritsa wanted Morax's gnosis and Zhongli wanted to retire, so they made a contract to test Liyue. Signora was appointed as a overseer and Childe as a tester (without him knowing).
Because of "Morax death" during rite of descension, Childe resorted to backup plan, released Osial to lure Morax out. He did this with the belief that Morax would protect Liyue. Zhongli knew this too (he wanted Liyue to be tested after all) and agreed with it.
This led to the breaking of the agreement between Qixing and Fatui, even though Zhongli already hinted to them what actually happened. Then, Qixing cut the food supply to fatui in the Chasm.
Everyone involved (except traveler) has their own fault in this problem. So it's not right to only blame one party.
    Edit:
It was Signora's fault. It was her who sealed the deal regarding Chasm with Qixing (based on Fatui Anthon's quest) and the fatui there is Pulcinella's men, so you can say Chasm was under her and Pulcinella's jurisdiction.

As implied by Zhongli himself in Liyue's Final Archon Quest & Azhdaha post-battle dialog, when faced with circumstances beyond their control (let's say erosion for example), the Archons bemoan their lack of power. We've yet to know how a new archon is appointed since there's no action from Celestia whatsoever or does the Qixing know the truth that their broke god is still alive or they've chosen they'll run a nation in godless mode.
There's no official appointment of a new Archon or a rise of a new Archon, rather than a direct replacement like Makoto -> Ei.
As far as I know outside the theory and based on current lore progression, Zhongli did a dirty job by letting go of his duty as an Archon, but at the same time, Liyue has quite matured and managed to stand as a nation without a god, regardless of affecting the innocent Fatui, it's not his people.
Nevertheless we still don't know exactly what's inside the contract, as Signora is Tsaritsa's messenger chosen directly to Morax.

there was no new dialogue where the Traveler could tell Gendou Ringo of Nikolay and Katarina in The Chasm.
THAT was what hit me hardest, with this questline, because I could tell that withholding the option was a Deliberate Choice by both Mihoyo & the Traveler: whenever they can, the Traveler withholds painful truths and implications from Paimon and from NPCs.

The archons also have their own flaws, even tho thr game doesnt show it explicitly, it still shows that they arent pure and each character will do what they want according to the situation. The fatuis are overall bad, but still, from their perspective its not bad. Lyue people aremt that good as they say, otherwise lots of other things wouldnt have happened. Neither mondtsad people, venti just left his people all alone, and so is Inazuma, full of suffering caused by their archon.

Because if you do follow the trail Joels father leaves behind also heavily implies he met his end when he fell down the mountain which was quite a while ago before he was found by Palad. We dont actually have time perception of how long it has been for us on Teyvat, but its fair to assume that its been the same amount as it has been for us in real life which is almost two years. After doing both the Faui and Katarina quests, I came to realize small things about the Fatui, such as that the Electro and Cryo cicins walk in a kinda childish game way, like a kid pretending to be a soldier. That adds up to the things we learn about Katarina in the Chasm, of how she enjoys playing with her brother and enjoying her life. In every new patch we learn more and more that the world of Teyvat is not black and white, good and evil, but many different people with different opinions. The line of good and evil and how the traveler should handle situations in the future is becoming more and more blurred with every update (and we're still in nation 3 of the 7).

Hoyoverse is really doing a great job making every faction realistic. No one is absolutely good or evil. Just as the Fatui and Abyss Order are sympathetic, the Knights of Favonius, the Liyue Qixing and the Inazuman Shogunate are also quite shady at times. The cover up of Crepus Ragvindyr's death and the backhanded way the Ministry of Civil affairs is dealing with the Chasm crisis (aka having the traveler and a rag tag group of people do it for them with no proper credit. Just hush money) and the seemingly endless internal conflict among the Tri commission. Everyone is just doing what they believe is the right thing to do.
The build up for Khaenri'ah and Snezhnaya is really good. A lot of mixed feelings to be had, but in the end the Traveler will do what's the 'kind' thing to do. Because to me the Traveler values kindness above all. If someone is desprate for help, they will help eventually even if they do pretend to do not want to.

Signora striking those deals and then using Childe as a scapegoat shows that was her plan all along. She cared only about her own view, Childe was yet another pawn to her. And in the end she died because of her own schemes. She never cared about her own subordinates, in fact the Harbingers are disposable tools for the Tsaritsa as the Fatui are for the Harbingers (Anton further confirms in one of his lines). Katarina died because she despised the idea of running away as it would be treason, her lines heavily imply this. Sorry but this is reality. To hope otherwise is to fool yourself.

It's just that she didn't care enough to pull her troops out of the Chasm first. Zhongli also gets a share of the blame, since this whole stunt was his idea and blew up diplomatic relations between Liyue and the Fatui with no consideration for how that would affect the average schmucks. I wonder how it would go if it came out that this was all Rex Lapis's plan...

It's also heavily implied that Ningguang herself sealed the chasm, since basically a geo catalyst is needed if youre not as powerful as the traveller to unseal those rock energy formations. (Just my theory)
At the end of the day, the Millelith are like the Fatui, who are simply following orders. And yes they did leave the fatui some supplies which I think is as much as they could do under strict orders to abandon the chasm. It's those higher ups who had the power to prevent this (like the the tsaritsa and harbingers, and even zhongli), who should bear the full responsibility.

Actually in the moment when Childe tries to take the gnosis he realizes that it is not there and therefore the corpse is false, then it is logical to think that morax's death was a farce too, then ossial's plan as plan b makes sense, if Morax he is still alive so he will surely defeat ossial if the liyue people cannot defeat him, which Zhongli confirms for us, and on top of that he adds that Childe himself would have intervened if everything got out of control and Morax did not appear on time, since Zhongli knew well to Childe and his code of honor. And Signora was counting on if all else failed she would at least see Liyue destroyed which would be a good thing for her since she seems to hate everyone.

I got woke feelings about Fatui / Fatuus when Katarina and Aton is light side of them
Never consider them as bad guy just because they from evil nation, they just humans following what's is right for them. Fragile yet sturdy enough to prevailed... Like cryo.
