Small concern about Sumeru take, since it's in a rainforest which is humid all the time it's practically impossible to burn any tree in it let alone the huge tree of the city (speaking from experience as a person had been living in a somewhat humid area), it will take considerable amount of time an resources to burn any tree in sumeru if the tree haven't died long time ago and it didn't rain for at least a week. In other words cutting any tipe of tree in sumeru would be way faster and efficient but even that would take considerable amount of time with the tools exist and will give plenty of time for sumerians to realize and react to the situation (trees are way more resistant to explosion as well compared to concrete like fontaine)

In subsaharan rainforests, harmattan dry seasons fill the air with dust blowing in from the Sahara and leave every surface coated in it for months. Considering the proximity to the desert, I'd assume that the seasons in Sumeru function similarly to the ones I experienced in subsaharan africa.

great video!! though as resident history dweeb, i propose mondstadt may actually be *very* well defended.
mondstadt could function as a historically inaccurate motte-and-bailey castle!! these were castles before the development of medieval palace-castles, they would be contained within a motte (a moat in our terms) and housed the settlements residents within a wall, with the “keep” (a fortress or building) atop a hill. when attackers would invade, they’d enter from the gates and the residents would fight back, the bailey is the lower section where the town is held, and if necessary, residents would retreat to the “keep” and continue to defend from there!!
the only stupid part is the damn ladders surrounding the wall.

In the Khaenriah catastrophe 500 hundred years before the story, when all nations were under heavy attacks of monsters. Liyue had adeptis and yakshas to defend the people and still suffered greatly. Inazuma had an Archon and still took a tremendous hit. So on and so forth, and Mondstadt - The nation of freedom (and wine), the nation with no governing Archon and no god-like forces, barely had a problem. something to note about summeru tho is the fact that they would be actually unbeatable in guerilla warfare with the akasha's troop coordination, nahida literally knowing whats going on everywhere all the time, and summeru actually being incredibly hostile and difficult all around to traverse
dont forget nahida literally knows whats happening in every dream thats being dreamd in summeru... an army would probably be incredibly visible to her
they would probably never even reach sumeru city simply by virtue of attrition from skirmishes, wildlife, terrain and the routes an army could even take
then theres the point of most of their forces beign mercenaries, while yes at face value might look bad, the thing with mercenaries is that you can get MORe of them way faster than developing more garrison from your own population
another note to the bridges of mondstad and summeru being unable to be destroyed, they still are incredibly potent chockepoints, summeru cities bridges especially so

I think you’re severely underestimating how secure Mondstadt is
Yes there’s two entrances into the city. However, if you just put all the guards on the bridge there’s no way they can sneak past to the side entrance at all.
Mondstadt really only has one side you can attack from unless you have boats

    • @Axterix13
      @Axterix13 3 месяца назад +11

The side entrance has a gate, which would be barricaded when word of an advancing army came up. And even if they sneak around the side, you'd be in arrow range. It is not a place you want to put your forces. So no reason for Mondstadt to leave forces exposed on the bridge long term, although, there, they too would put up some quick earthworks and/or palisades. They really should build a permanent fortification at both ends of the bridge, though.

Mondstadt does have its outriders, whose whole purpose is to scout and report threats to the city, so they would have some advance notice of an attack. Also, even if that back gate literally can't be closed by any means, it's still a pretty solid choke point, especially since it leads directly into another pretty effective choke point.

  • @GuyWithAnAmazingHat
    @GuyWithAnAmazingHat 3 месяца назад +138

The video is not being fully accurate for humour, but Mondstadt actually has 10 whole companies of knights, most of them working all around in and outside of Mondstadt. They constantly patrol and scout threats before they even grow in size, so the knights constantly keep all roads and areas around Mondstadt safe, it is a very strong military. A company is at the very least 100 troops, Mondstadt would have at least 1000 knighted personnel, and probably more trainees and cadets like Noelle, who can also have Visions.
These patrol and scouting capabilities are also applied to the 3 main militaries of Sumeru, which are supposed to number in thousands. There's also a strange choice to omit Archons and Vision bearers, the Dendro Archon has the ability to instantly create giant walls of dendro that can even block off the desert itself, in a siege, she could easily cover Sumeru city from all angles. The Dendro Archon also has the ability to communicate with many spiritual beings like Aranara who possess vast elemental powers, they also constantly protect the forest from all sorts of threats, even Forbidden Knowledge itself.
Bringing in Archons, Inazuma has been so safe exactly because they have the most active Archon, who has been taking down all sorts of enemies on her own for thousands of years. She can also strike any target in Inazuma with lightning as her Eye sees everything and has covered the entire country with a lightning storm, she is the country's own defense system.
And Fontaine is why Liyue is not the no.1 safest, it is the most technologically advanced city and military, with actual robots with guns, and it's guarded by an actual Dragon Sovereign, it is literally impossible to defeat by anyone Archon and below in strength. Fontaine is the safest and most powerful country so far.
Not including Visions is the least accurate part of the video, Visions are integral to how the societies and technologies of Teyvat function, they hold massive elemental possibilities to manipulate the world around them; Some Vision holders can even be as powerful as gods themselves.

This led to the ongoing civil war and invasions of Inazuma by the people of Watatsumi when their god was the invader in the first place. Raiden showed them mercy for centuries but they still disregard the fact that they were the actual aggressors.
The Thunderbird Kapatcir descended from Celestia and became the guardian of Seirai Island, but the Celestia worshipers of the island started doing child sacrifices for Celestia, which ended up killing Ruu and causing Kapatcir grief. Kapatcir attacked both Seirai and Tsurumi Island out of rage prompting Raiden to put an end to it.

Ok I have to point out that unless its a strictly millitary location most cities dont build and maintain defenses in peace time.
Reason being that it costs money, people and time that would be way better spent on something else unless there is a war going on (even then its only considered if the city in question is important enough AND is under threat of attack).
A lot of the flaws in the defenses of a capital city can be compensated by a simple fortification project and a mobilisation order when the need arises.

while I love the concept of this video I did wanna bring up a couple of issues.
first is the assumption that being waterlocked is as good for defense as you make it out to be. hilichurls don't know how to sail, but treasure hoarders and fatui do. If i were to mount a coordinated assault on either fontaine or inazuma, that would be my first instinct, since neither has a navy to speak of like Liyue does
next, you need to consider the most travelled paths. If we're talking invasion force, it's gonna be hard to get that many people much of anywhere outside of mondstadt and liyue. if the ocean is an option and siege equipment is on the table, an assault on inazuma city becomes a lot more feasible, but for land assault Sumeru is likely the most hostile terrain in the world. any attempt to mass a force big enough to seize the city would draw notice and be harried all the way to the city gates. poisoned supplies, assassinated leaders, quality intelligence about size, strength, and condition long before they reach the city. the tree is stupid though, fully grant that.
personally I would consider Fontaine the most well defended region in the game because the unnatural elevation, canal locks, and unfriendly terrain before even getting to the region. It makes maintaining a supply line ridiculously hard. If you can manage to raise and feed an army from inside fontaine without the city realizing it ahead of time to attack the Navia line, you'd be in business, but even then that aquabus line is a choke point to reckon with even if you do have overwhelming numbers.
and that brings me to my last point, there's not a lot of people in teyvat on the scale of planets. even counting enemy humans, it's somewhere like 3,000 maybe, worldwide? mounting an assault on a major city is gonna take a coordination effort among groups pooling their resources to avoid detection and copious amounts of guerilla warfare. The topography of the game reads like a more mountainous Mediterranean region. For my money, even with the lake surrounding, Mondstadt is the worst defended city for both the reasons you described and the fact that there are two giant mostly flat areas surrounding the city that would be perfect for staging a siege operation and just starving the city out.
Loved the video, wanna see more like it.

Nice analysis. I still think you sold Mondstadt' defenses a little short. You did point out in Liyue that it's easy to defend as there are only 3 choke points. Well if Mondstadt puts their defense lines ON the bridge (which they already did during the prologue attack), then they only have one choke point to worry about, with archers able to fire down from the city walls. Plus we know that Mondstadt has reconnaissance and a cavalry so they most likely wouldn't be blindsighted either.

A couple things I think about these cities, taking into account how they fare in story missions, as well as some lore.
Mondstadt: Regarding the bridge, if they wanted to blow the bridge, they would literally only need Klee to do it. However, given that their castle wall doesn't make much sense, I could almost see them doing exactly what Diluc does in his story quest, and just having a large amount of Knights try to fight on top of and hold the bridge itself. We do know that the Knights of Favonius fortified the mouth of the bridge while we were off to fight and free Dvalin, and forcing enemies into doing melee with a contingent of Knights on the bridge is a decent way to make up for the apparent lack of ranged options, though since you specifically said no Vision-users, I don't fancy their chances if a whole lot of Mitachurls charge down the center of the bridge. However, fortifying the bridge to hold the city is something that we have seen them successfully do, so we do know that the Knights CAN hold the city by fighting on the bridge. Not every city on this list is so fortunate as to have been successful in their defenses. That said, an Abyss Mage did make it all the way into the city during Diluc's quest, and of course Signora (and us) snuck past everyone and got to the Lyre, so even when they cannot be invaded, they can be infiltrated. On the case of the Abyss Mage, too, it entered through the unguarded side entrance Bee mentioned, probably by flying over the water. Not too many enemies can do that, thankfully, but those that can will just laugh at the bridge.
Liyue also does have an automated repeating crossbow on one of the chokepoints. However, the Treasure Hoarders somehow figured out how to disable the Guizhong Ballista that one time when Qiqi told us to shoot a Cocogoat with it. But then the locals reverse engineered the thing and now they just have Adeptus-based long range ballistas, so good luck. The Millelith are definitely quite competent, and Liyue has... well, I guess it wouldn't be right to call Beidou's ship a "navy", but they do have naval defenses in the form of setting up reverse-engineered magic ballista on the various islands and landmasses surrounding the harbor. We never see these in exploration, but they did demonstrate that they could set these up quickly and discreetly when... I'm going to butcher the spelling, Beischt or something? Osial's angry lover? THE ONE WHO HIT ME WITH A HYDRO PUMP. Yeah, when that hydra rolled in, they did demonstrate the ability to hold the harbor (their weakness to giant waves was covered for by Shenhe, so if anyone generates a tsunami, the harbor could still be screwed without a vision holder to help them).
Inazuma City: Oh boy. I mean, Swordfish II got in without much problem and were literally there to meet you at Tenshukaku. SANGONOMIYA'S FORCES LITERALLY DID GET ALL THE WAY TO TENSHUKAKU. Inazuma is capable of fielding powerful artillery pieces of its own, like Liyue did with their Guizhong Ballista, but there are no Taumujina Cannons (might have butchered the spelling there too) set up on Narukami Island during open-world exploration, and unlike in Liyue's cutscenes, they don't demonstrate that they have them ready to go. I think story-wise they were only shipped out to the front line, but Kokomi was pretty quick to show them that it might not be a good idea to build static defenses with very limited fields of fire. I will say one thing though - seeing as they used to hunt down Vision-holders regularly, the soldiers of the Shogunate are PROBABLY pretty competent. Also, in addition to a sizable military, Inazuma has a PROPER NAVY, and I wouldn't be surprised if they'd be able to defensively deploy marines in order to defend the city.
Sumeru City: I mean, you've already successfully invaded the city once and beaten up almost the entire Corps of Thirty up to free Nahida. However, they would have a HUGELY EFFECTIVE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM (hint: it's Bee's current profile picture!). When Nahida says "I see everything!", she does literally mean that she has eyes everywhere in the green part of Sumeru. You are not sneaking up on Sumeru City with any conventional means... unless it's the corrupt sages in charge, then you can and literally will sneak into the city and take down the defenses and the government in a single story quest. The second city to fail its defense on our list, after Kazuha and Swordfish II fighting to the gates of Tenshukaku. Sumeru has demonstrated the ability to build absolutely devastating weapons (that one limited-time event where two Akademiya researchers built a LASER CANNON TO KILL WENUT WITH), not to mention that they damn nearly succeeded in building a replacement god, but for now it doesn't seem like they're putting much of their research into military developments, and so still rely on the Corps of Thirty.
Fontaine: [BATTLE DROID NOISES] Something tells me that the nation where people have guns, guard robots with rotary cannons, and flying ships will do pretty damn well. Unlike the last two cities, it hasn't been stormed successfully. Fontaine applies it's engineering and science specialties to defense and law enforcement much more readily than Sumeru does, and it definitely shows. I mean, I don't know what to say. Most of the other nations are still using swords, spears, and bows, and these guys have minigun robots. I guess one of the bigger issues is that most of their security personnel are police officers and not military personnel. We also haven't seen any particularly noteworthy forces attempt to storm the city yet, so we're not sure they can hold their own in practice, but considering invaders would have to contend with combat robots and literal gun lines? I think they'll probably be fine. Fontaine also used to have a navy, but I think it was mainly for hunting sea monsters. Modern Fontaine does not maintain any navy that I am aware of - besides the flying ship, the Fortuna. Even then, though, Liyue is the only other nation who can claim to have an aerial asset like that, not to mention that Fontaine has smaller aircraft too (though we don't see any Air Force, it wouldn't be too hard to strap some bombs to an Antoine Rogers aircraft).
TL;DR: Mondstadt and Liyue have successfully defended themselves before. Inazuma and Sumeru were not able to, and in both cases, invading forces were able to get right up to the seat of government. We don't know how Fontaine would do, but they have guns. Mondstadt can make strategies revolving around fighting to hold the bridge, Liyue has a competent army with reverse-engineered Adepti weapons that can be deployed to hold the harbor, Inazuma can field deadly artillery pieces and has both a battle-hardened military and a sizable navy, Sumeru... er... um... [singing an Aranara song because I don't want to say something mean]... and then Fontaine has technology and is not afraid to use it. Liyue and Fontaine also now have powerful aerial assets, with the Jade Chamber and the (new) Fortuna, respectively. Sumeru has the knowledge to make itself Hell for any invader but I just don't think they want to use their science like that, outside of when the more corrupt sages were in charge and they created a FATUI HARBINGER GOD GUNDAM. But, still, Nahida wouldn't let her city be unsafe, so it's probable the city is safer now than ever. Which isn't saying much considering how easy it was for a few Vision-holders, a band of Eremites, and a kid in a Nahida costume to dismantle all of Sumeru City's defenses and defeat all the guards.

Wait, why are we not counting the various mechs again for Fontaine? They are artificial soldiers but they're soldiers nevertheless and should be counted. Heck in the wiki for the Maison Gardiennage, the Gardemeks are under them. If we count them, you can't call Fontaine's army "small" anymore.
Also what about the watchful eyes of the Melusines part of the Marechausse Phantom? Surely they are very useful for recon even if they're not good when in comes to a fight. And yeah, the Marechausse Phantom is also under the Maison Gardiennage.
Also the vulnerability of that end of the Navia line is easily covered considering what and who is in that area practically 24/7. If an army gathers near there, Neuvillete will make short work of them. No way in hell he won't be informed if an army gathers near his backyard.
I'm of the solid opinion that when it comes to just military might(no vision holders/other entities i.e. gods etc.) Fontaine has the best(at least compared to the other 4 we know of, with Sumeru as last).
While they might have fewer human soldiers, they more than make up for it with the sheer number of Gardemeks of various utility and strength. Not to mention the guns. You'd find that guns are such a big game changer when it comes to war, courtesy of our world history. The same would apply here.

Actually, from a military point of view, Liyue would be the most vulnerable. Even behind Sumeru. If an enemy captured the mountain range behind the city, almost all of Liyue would be threatened, with no room to fall back. I would rate Fontaine First and Mondstadt second. Choke points are historically very easy to defend. For that reason, many large battles in the Medieval age happened around bridges. Furthermore, Sumeru (assuming the tree doesn't burn), Mondstadt and Inazuma have layers of defense where they could fall back if they made a mistake at the first line of defense.

    Imo
1- Sumeru(is literally a giant tree house and there are little to no boundary walls..it ll get attacked from all sides at once.
2- Liyue...its literally "under" mountains. You can frankly rain arrows from above/detonate the rocks from up top. Even though this has the strongest army along side maison gardiennage they kind of have a topographical disadvantage..not to mention, their Mint and Forge are outside the city..on a very awkward offroad path, that will be occupied way too quickly. Infact their "hospital" is also at the absolute corner lol, meaning it can be targetted by bow users on the mountains. And the 8 trades and other qixing apart from Ninguang, basically 99.09% of their leaders work from Yuehai pavilion, which will either get crushed instantly by falling boulders and if not, it is right next to a mountain slope that can be easily climbed to infiltrate.
3- Inazuma - You ll have to fight a naval battle, to even land on the shores, which..is not that difficult considering narukami island has moor-able coastline..it does not have a lot of particularly punishing coastline. Plus you cut off Ritou and your trade goes poof, aka your foreign supplies. This will be a battle of attrition and wont be easy for Narukami island to be able to defend itself for too long, as all supplies would need to come via sea...means they can be intercepted.
4- Mondstadt - Block the bridge, and mondstadters will die of food shortage within their own four walls. Springvale would be captured. The current knights in the main city are not the "elite" ones other than the captains. They can try to bring some food via Cider lake but again, unless mond has a hidden fleet somewhere it would be difficult. So the battle will quite literally happen at the bridge.
5- Fontaine - Heck they live within massive walls already that too with no exits lol. Laying seige on that would be such a pain in the butt. Like there are legit NO open passages to outside of the city other than those aquabus routes. Not to mention, they have maison gardiennage right at the head of the city at Palais Mermonia. Aka you ll be facing an army of clockwork mechas, elite members of Special Security and Surveillance Patrol led by chevruse and the champion duelists(lol remember that chlorine ain't the only one). To make matters worse, while not the main base, Spina di rosula also has some forces there. If even this wasn't enough, house of the hearth is also within these walls, any attack on the city that puts them at risk, will force the fatui to mobilize as well...yep..you don't want to mess with their elite soldiers either, specially not the ones under the care of high ranking harbinger with a lot of political sway.
If even this wasn't enough by any chance, people of fontaine excel in diving, and they have underwater clockwork mechs too. So you would be fighting a Submarine warfare against the opponents that are good at it.
AND if even this wasn't enough, there is a very sizable amount of forces within Fortress of Meropide led by Wriothesley. The enemies might succeed in capturing the so research institute and opera house, sure. But the fortress is heavily guarded. Between the fortress and the city, they can even catch enemies in a pincer attack on the land.
As long as Fontainians use their resource just a bit sparingly, they are surviving any attack on them.
Now i ll go see the video, to see how wrong i am lol.

We cannot simply forget that in matters of armies it would actually be very difficult to infiltrate the majority of cities, the Sumeru tree and the entire rainforest region around it already eliminates almost all chances of a major invasion (apart from the fact that it is a super hostile environment, Sumeru has vast technology and means of communication and organization) and there would be no way to simply burn everything because it is a rainforest.
fontaine is another one with good territorial defense and the surrounding region is a pain in the ass to move around (apart from the fact of fontaine's absurdly high technology) the best strategy would be boats, and even then there would be low chances (without mentioning the command and abnormally high organization in fontaine).
Inazuma is by far the easiest to get into, but there are also facts such as its large army and its weapons that are of extreme quality (practically a North Korea, and we also have the shogun).
liyue is simply incredible in several aspects, they have a maritime force, a large army and entrances closed by mountains that are very difficult to climb (even more so with armor and a large number of people) they have a great advantage in weapons that use adepti energy and literally magic, the jade chamber that could see an army coming within miles and could move and annihilate the army right there (just as we discovered through events that liyue and mond are focusing on new technologies for long-distance defense).
mond is simply very well protected by its hexagonal style of walls and only two easy entrances (and the port can be easily blocked) mond has a large number of soldiers even after Varka took 80-85% of them for the expedition, it has a large number of adventurers (by the way, the guild is close to the main gate, which gives a high advantage) and a certain number of hunters experienced in hiding from the Diona village, and we cannot forget that its hexagonal structure for the cathedral provides a great way to evacuation for the people of the city (they would stay in the church banker). We also have the great and good exploration and alchemy groups of Albedo and Eula (on a mission we discovered that the mond hexagon system is so good that the fatui tried to get the plants from Eula's family, just as Albedo was developing weapons from attack at great distances to defense after Varka takes most of the soldiers) and we still have strong people like jean and they can simply use a klee bomb to destroy the bridge in critical matters.
all this without having mentioned the issue of there being the adepti in liyue, Andrius and Dvalin in mond, the magical issues and the yokais in inazuma, the aranaras in sumeru and Neuvillette himself in fontaine.
let's not forget that 500 years ago, when everyone was less advanced, these cities defeated abnormally strong monsters from the abyss (fontaine alone and with only humans trapped elynas, which is the size of small islands).
Edit: in mond we also have the walls which would be incredible for archers, as well as the development of Albedo's group's weapons apparently also works underwater (and because the area around mond is almost flat, they could easily see an army coming miles away). They also have Lisa and some of the hexenzirkel witches if we count them (and the archons which alone are practically a defense).

      @@hinomi107
For sumeru, its not the burning of the tree i m concerned about. Also, i am not just expecting tanks to come rolling. Assassinations of leaders, etc can also end the wars. Any suspicious group will be thwarted IF they come from the Gandharva Ville part thanks to forest rangers, who are actually a pretty strong force, not to mention their range, mobility, etc..they would be such a massive guerilla force employing poison, traps etc. its the Bayda harbor side that i am worried about. it is easy to infiltrate sumeru from that side(unless you count Aranara as line of defense lol), and then there is nothing stopping them form the back gate. Tree burning in that climate is impossible yes, but you can go around poisoning tree roots, destroy the Bimarastan(its literally right next to the northern entrance of sumeru), or march from that side to take over Citadel immediately. It would take too long from reinforcements from the Forest Rangers or desert folks to arrive(remember they are allies now).
Lol we have a similar stance on Fontaine, that city is not going anywhere lol. Infact even assassination attempts would be very difficult as cameras exist in Fontaine. If that wasn't enough, Spina di rosula exists to handle these suspicious elements of the society.
Inazuma is very easy to land on. You can use small boats, to transport soldiers in small batches at night to avoid any lookout. There is a massive cave system right below the Tenshukaku(where Ayaka's quest happens), and there are no guards patroling those coasts. It will take sometime, but an army can literally hide there and wait for more forcues to accumulate before they launch attack or terror strikes in the city at a random night. I am not counting the likes of shoguns, nahida, zhongli etc divine beings as a deterrent as then it just beats the purpose of doing this speculation. We are just testing out how safe the city is.
Liyue IS amazing in that sense yes. It has capable leaders, and probably the most goated army of all nations so far. Infact if it wasn't not for the masione gardiennage commanding armies over armies of gardemechs, Milleliths would easily be the strongest force(ok perhaps except Fatui). However, adeptal weapons are not as prevalent. Not to mention they arent used for usual surveillance and patrol. The fate of Liyue rests on the fact that, are we considering Liyue to be under Ninguang's leadership or some one of similar caliber or not. Because yes chances are she will see any attacks coming straight away, and it wont even have to do anything related to peeking from Jade Chamber lol. Her intelligence network is just scary af. However, my biggest gripe is, you can literally use the slope behind the yuehai pavilion to sneak into it. It is the place where all the qixing except Ninguang operate from. The guards are all stationed outside the pavilion, but no one is guarding that mountain side, hence, you can sneak in. My second gripe is, Bubu Pharmacy is located at a very awkward spot. A detonation on top of the mountain would utterly destroy it. I feel a place like pharmacy should be somewhat in a safer place. Because in case of a major conflict and battle of attrition, you need to treat the wounded constantly. You need an infirmary. In case of such an emergency, Liyue cant even call for backup easily as golden house guards are their only hope. Chenyu vale hosts a lot of training ground for Mileliths and there are some of them stationed at Chasm, however they are way too far away to be able to provide any support. The road form qingce village is unguarded and supplies and herbs can be cut off. All in all, it depends on whether the enemy can capture those hills or not. If they can, they win, if not, Liyue remains safe.
Mondstadt too has plus points but it is not that easy. Mondstadt can destroy that bridge to keep the enemies at bay yes. But this also means that they can now only get resources via cider lake now, and it would be very easy to see a supply ship headed for Mond. thanks to as you said a large view. Springvale is their only hope for assistance but against a trained army, id don't think hunter stand much chance in open land. If this was being fought in wolvendom, the hunters+wolves have deterred enemies like Forest Rangers do for sumeru. Area around mond does not have that kind of forests. The enemies can just camp in the open around Windrise and avoid forest areas. Rendering the hunter's skills much less useful. So destroying the bridge would mean that they effectively cut off their own supply route, and they will eventually just choke thanks to not having enough resources to sustain them.
While the cathedral(which is both a place where refuge can be taken and the healing centre of mond) seems like it is the furthest form danger, actually it is not. The walls of Mond gets lower and lower as you go up. And there are no guards there as well. If there is an entire order of nuns like rosaria, then they don't need to worry about assassinations in the cathedral but if Rosaria is the only exception, then it will go down south very easily as the cathedral is very easy to inflitrate. Not to mention, only Amber exists when it comes to Outriders(aka lookouts). There need to be more of those. There are no archers in Knights of favonius(at least not yet). The only archer there is Amber. All knights supposedly use swords. If those walls were high from all sides, or had soldiers patrolling those areas, i feel mond would be super safe, but in absence of these two things..it probably is not.

Sis investigated Mondstadt forgetting they have actually been developing nukes and long range radar (even underwater) for a year or so 😭
It's true if we're taking everything at face value it seems all of then was very lacking but with recent events they've been talking how the militaries are improving their defenses and they talked about their recent technologies and methods, and for several events it has been hinted that Albedo's platoon has been working hard on developing covert defense mechanisms that works long range rather than requiring armies at the front line because they realized how they are severely undernumbered because most of their best knights were taken away by Varka so they have to do what they must.
I think Mondstadt might also benefit from the existence of Andrius and Diluc keeping some perimeters of western Mondstadt safe (and the Springvale hunters to certain extent). It's also mentioned that Dvalin regularly goes out of his nest (Cyno's side event in Windblume event) so he might have hunted some monsters on the way too, adding to the region's overall safety. But yeah these are written with the lore consideration in mind because if we look at events and character lines, there are definitely a lot more soldiers in Mondstadt who are always on the patrol or out doing researches on the perimeters of the city (like Eula and Albedo's platoon), but we never see them in the game so we just have to trust them for it 😅
Nevertheless you raised a fair point. I never realized the lack of bars on the port side gate of Mondstadt and that certainly is an issue 😂 Good job noticing all the details.
Despite my comments, I still enjoy watching the whole video as there are some interesting mentions and notes and comparison with some real life defense, though perhaps if you are also going to just look at it at face value and not accounting lores and character lines, maybe it should be mentioned in the disclaimer too?

I do think that if Varka's company returned, Mondstadt would be the best equipped city to withstand a prolonged siege with minimal damage, until reinforcements from other nations can arrive. That is provided that they can block off the side entrance and get enough ranged-weapon personnel onto the walls. Maybe Tenshukaku would be even better for specifically that, but both Hanamizaka and Tenryou would completely burn to the ground in the meantime, not to mention it would take way longer for reinforcements to arrive.

The Eremite thing is a bit complicated, they are not a monolithic group and act as roaming mercenaries and tribes, so they can be hired as mercenaries to fight other Eremites as part of tge city defence
Also the "Samurai" enemies of Inazuma arent Samurai, they are Ronin, masterless Samurai and wanderers, most of them historically like Eremite become Mercs or Brigands aka Bandits, so they can be also hired as Mercenaries, which is why they were sometimes seen with Treasure Hoarders or even Fatui.
Also, the Favonius Church of Mondstadt houses many Nuns who were once ex-bandits. Like Rosaria and a certain Chubby nuns, so when things are desperate they could be levied as competent militia.

it's also worth noting that fontaine has acess to airships. so they can also use that (and the water cannon in that one event could be repurposed into an actual weapon again) to defend itself from incoming invaders. plus their entire naval fleet is composed of ships made of metals and not wood, so it would be significantly harder to bring those down. it's also geographically harder to traverse water than it is to traverse land because there is no coverage from mountains on the open seas (or lake in fontaine's case). the aquaducts are also relatively narrow and can't really hold a massive army of enemies, that and as you said they could just blow it up even before then. you should also remember that the fortress of meropide is literally connected to the opera epiclese and if need be, wriothesley could just launch a direct line of defense of military grade robots, who are much stronger than the average soldier and could easily endure monster attacks.
unless the invading force has submarines but fontaine is one of the most technologically advanced nations and id imagine they would be the ones to invent the first ever submarine in teyvat if anything.

4.7 There was a limited-time event involving military exchanges between the countries, and the commanders of Liyue compared the strengths and weaknesses of the armies of each country. The mercenaries of Sumeru have the advantage of being good at guerrilla warfare and can ambush for a long time with very few resources. Considering that Sumeru's rainforests and rugged terrain are not suitable for large marches, this suits them well. Rather than the city walls, Sumeru needs to have mercenaries and rangers evenly distributed and be able to pass information on each other.

I think most of Sumeru's weaknesses (except the Divine Tree) are fixable due to new management (Nahida) being much more open to feedback and change. Architectural weaknesses are grave but some priority-shifting and reforms and Ksharewar can address these problems. Rogue Eremite factions are also decreasing in numbers due to the new efforts by Nahida to reach out and reintegrate more folks from the desert. With increased opportunities for education and employment, dangerous and illegal work will become less attractive options. The influx of desert folk looking for new employment in the city also provides a boost to the labor force, making repairs and new construction more likely to be accomplished in a timely manner.

As the big tree of Sumeru is right next to a lake/river system, the roots even reaching into it, it's wood will always be very well hydrated making it fairly resistant to burning down. Thunder strikes would be a much bigger threat than fire as it would turn the water in the veins of the tree into steam and make it expand in an instance making them explode from the inside and rip apart (this is why thunder strikes split trees in half).
But to wet wood fire is not much of a threat... dead and dry wood would be vulnerable though.
Also I'm not entirely sure but hasn't the Corps of Thirty been more or less upgraded from mercenaries to the official army and law enforcement of Sumeru? I guess they can be compared to the Byzantine Varangian Guard (all Viking mercenaries in service of the Eastern Roman Empire) or the Vatican Swiss Guard whose colorful robes also hailed from their time as mercs.

Mondstadt also doesn't have any blindspot so the defenders can easily spot any attacker.. also one bomb from klee can immedietly destroy the stone bridge along with blocking the side gate near the port. And the fact that the city has walls means you don't need a lot of soldiers to defend. And finally because of the geography the island the city is sitting is slanted means that any attackers has only the main gate side or the port gate side to attack since pretty much the back of the city is impossible be climbed so the defenders can easily focus on certain part of the city without compromising the remaining part.

I ask you reconsider ranking Inazuma higher than Mondstadt. Mondstadt may not have a draw-bridge but that bridge still serves to funnel invaders into a kill zone and the city itself is more of a fortress than Inazuma. And we still have yet to see Dorman Port. Soon, hopefully.

While I do understand discounting Vision holders in general, I think that there should be an exception for characters who are part of the guard force of their city. Mondstadt is an especially obvious case for this - 9 of the Mondstadt Vision holders are official Knights (Amber, Lisa, Kaeya, Jean, Albedo, Eula, Sucrose, Mika, and Klee), so taking them away makes the city look kind of bad.

Yeah but Monstad has tons of powerfull vision holders lorewise, most of them could probably defend the main gate by themselves whitout much trouble.
In inazuma you have several skilled fighters but really "powerhouses" aside from raiden you have almost no one. At least i cant see any of them being able to face a big group of enemies for a long time.
In Monstad individually Noelle,Diluc, jean, eula Albedo ( klee would also be a nightmare to any army) could probably fight small armies by themselves and leave whitout a scratch

Plus, venti and zhongli would 100% help their country in case of a invasion. "But he didnt help liyue in the crisis!" He was testing the people of liyue. He would intervene if it went out of control. Venti helped Mondsdadt on the archon quest. Dont see why he wouldnt help them in the case of a invasion

Dozens of countries with defenses such as Monstad and Liyue were successfully destroyed by Mongolian troops.

From using them as observation balloons to directly bombarding enemies they can be quite impactful on the battlefield.
Let’s not forget there’s also Wriothesley’s ship, which could be used for rapid troop transfer.

I think Sumeru would be the most impenetrable simply because of the World Tree, it is basically a maphack that will see all enemy movements like on a chess board. The dendro archon can also conjure colossal wooden walls in no time.

  • @commander1488

THERE IS an advantage of Mondstadt bridge even if its not a draw bridge...
Since the bridge is the most convenient point of entry, MOST enemy would go thru it- this works for Mondstadtians because they can launch concentrated fire (bows, canons, etc.) on that singular area...
And if you remember that one quest, Amber and the rest even barricaded and put obstacle on the bridge... this hinder enemy movement and make them susceptible to long range attacks

I actually agree with the mondstadt assessment, and im sure the devs knew this very well too because theres a commission quest where the side entrance was easily overwhelmed by a bunch of slimes and the traveller hv to help them out.
For inazuma, they do hv their archon who actively monitor and repel potential threats unlike the other 4 regions currently in the game. Liyue used to hv an archon that actively protect their region as well but has since retired after Osial's failed attack.
As for sumeru, they likely hv a different doctrine from the others, which is much like most jungle warfare irl. That is, they probably employ guerrilla doctrine with just how much caves, caverns, and hiding spots that soldiers can ambush from. This way, its up to the enemies to maintain whatever power and resource they can in the city at a severe disadvantage. So if you take into account the effectiveness of guerrilla warfare throughout history, sumeru might hv the worst defences, but they make up for it by being the best to survive long term warfare, that also includes war of attrition.

I disagree whit Monstad, they did the same mistake in the mission whit Diluc where they lefted the main gate unguarded which makes no sense especially after a warning to a attack (even if the other gate is under attack it makes no sense for them to leave the main unguarded)
And that aside most of the competent soldiers being out have you seen the vision holders inside the city?
I mean Noelle could probably defend the MAIN GATE by herself and there are a bunch of equally or even more powerfull in the city
