Writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips formed one of my personal favorite creative teams in comics. Since 2006, they've been releasing crime stories in their series Criminal. This video looks at their partnership and the noir tropes they utilize to make their comics.
Wow, he brought back taping the tropes on to the wall.
thats hype
Vol. 3 to be exact
Hello Chris, I just want you to know that I enjoy your channel and I use your videos frequently in the classroom to teach writing. I find that students have a hard time grasping how to introduce an essay thesis. I find your introductions funny and illustrative. After watching 6 or 7 of your videos where you introduce a topic, students start to get it. Thank you very much.
So happy to see a “classic” comic tropes!!!
Brubaker’s Captain America, Daredevil, and Gotham Central are amazing. Glad to see you doing some independent comics too.
I like your One-take approach on your videos. No blabber, no wild cuts... very relaxing!
Chris seemed a bit too experienced making prank calls. We might have a career criminal on our hands here.
The trick for prank calls is to keep them involved in the conversation lol
Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke’s Catwoman is still my favorite version of that character.
When it comes to gritty crime comics with some real soul to them, you can’t go wrong with Brubaker and Greg Rucka.
This is such a Great comic and brubaker and philips are two amazing storytellers by themselves and when they are together they become an artistic Force to be reckoned with. Fatale, sleeper and the fade out are between my favourite comics ever. I also loved kill or be killed.
That prank was pure gold. She actually had empathy for Chris.
That call made my day
Oh man... that crank call started out with me doubting you had any idea what you were doing and then... BAM... everything turned epic.
Criminal and East of West are my favorite comics!! Thanks Chris!! So happy I’m a Patron!!
I'm glad you love Comic Tropes too Skip! His videos are great. Good to see you man!
Gateway into Comics Dont know how I didn’t get this message reply, but heck yeah, Chris is the best! I’m a Patron too! Looking forward to your next video 🙌🏾
That intro seque was probably my favorite one
Alex Wargo same lol “you caught me committing a crime! 🤷🏼♂️”
chris' face holy fuck lmaooo
Lol
Nothing beats “Oh hi you caught me dying”
And the only Mark in the store is so confused that everyone is avoiding him.
I was literally going to your channel on an hourly basis today to get my fix.
The camera went kinda wonky early on: I thought RUclips dropped me down to 144p again
I just read his Fatale comic. It's got that Noir and horror in it. Ed Brubaker just became my favorite comic book writer.
I love the return to tropes! And the crank call was great!
Love the return of listing the tropes. Of course not all videos need it but I find it a nice touch! Criminal is a fantastic comic, top tier crime fiction all the way. Hope all is well Chris, thanks for the video!
Trying to infuse some Sean Phillips into my inks right now, so that was timely. Great show!
I really want to watch this video, but I don't want the story to get spoiled. I still need to finish the last two fFtale books I have before I read Criminal. I left you a thumbs up because I am a HUGE fan of your channel.
My favorite duo working today. I've read everything they've done and it's all good to great.
Watching this in April 2020 and I'm in tears
Say now, that Sleeper comic sounds interesting.
Oh hell yeah. Brubaker and Phillips are like peanut butter and jelly. I read all of the Criminal volumes. So good.
Thanks for taking one for the team with that prank call!
So cool you went back to the old format
Awesome video, discovered some great comics again wow !
Just when I thought I was out , he pulls me back into comics !
very interesting video. love the breakdown of the tropes, and synopsis of the book. Very informative and exactly the video I was looking for. I am just know getting into ed brubaker and this video helped me learned more about him
Love this duo! I been going back and consuming everything of theirs over the last few months. Finishing up the last volume of FATALE today (highly recommend) and definitely recommend "My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies". Love the channel, bud!
Bruh this a gold tier prank
Shout-out to _Gotham Central_ ! It is, by far, the best _Batman_ spin-off. Since reading it, Brubaker has become one of my favorite comic authors!
EDIT: _Gotham Central_ isn't so much noir as it is hard-boiled police procedural, but its excellent!
Absolutely masterful prank call
Always enjoyable content. Thanks.
I sees a comic tropes video, I hits like.
I didn't know he did the Gumby 3D book! That's one I've got to look for to add to my 3D collection!
I've got Lowlife. I feel like that and Deadenders were Brubaker's pre crime oeuvre. Even though they're very different from his later work, I think there's something about how personal those comics are that still resonates.
An ed brubaker gumby comic? What did gumby jump into a dashiell hammett novel
jesus how is chris' opening skits god tier?
They're the best.
One of my top 3 writers in comics
Easily one of the best crime fiction duo in the comic book industry.
EXcellent prank call!
By the same Brubaker/Philips team, there’s also The Fade Out, it’s great
Should We Be More Concerned Over The Crime He Just Admitted to? Do we call Batman?
Sleeper is one of the best series I’ve ever read. Period.
You absolute madlad, you actually prank called
I'm really happy to see the return of the trope counts. I was wondering if the "kids" thing was hurting the channel. While some kids might like some of your episodes, I really don't think children in general would be that into most of the content.
That prank call was life hahahasha
Every time I hear you saying 'Hello' it reminds me of a Seinfeld episode.
Dude, call the police on that store. The delightful young lady on the end of the line clearly has a vendetta against society.
whats really criminal is the fact this only has 1000 likes
Would love to see you do a feature on Scalped.
oh hi! you caught me commenting on a RUclips video! let's talk about the best intro to a video on all of RUclips...
I have the complete original series and sequels in floppies...I should probably read them sometime.
Last of the Innocent is one of the best comics ever created. Jet black take on Archie using Criminal as a lens. Will never not love it
Now would you imagine if Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips both did a fantasy book together? Would that be interesting?
I hope they bring back Gotham Central and its a breath of fresh air to see Gotham in the police's perspective.
The whole video was out of focus and yet i didn't want the video to end
If that person had asked "Mark who?" I wonder if Chris would have said either "Millar" or "Spector"? XD =P
Wow this is was unexpectedly funny
I watched this on VHS, looks fine to me, and ya ya, I know, what is VHS?
I'll tell you how they tackle Noir: two fists at a time!
I have a question for you Chris, The Last of the Innocent came out 2011 and Brubaker openly admits to the usage of Archie like characters. Do you think that this run of Criminal being so well received lead to Archie Comics themselves taking notice and allowing for the creation of Afterlife with Archie? That series seems to be the starting point of people really caring for the characters again and leading to the current Archie renaissance of the last six years. Just wondering your thoughts. And I agree they are my favorite comic collaborators with multiple titles together.
It's possible but I have never come across an interview that ascribes the more realistic Archie books to Criminal so it's all conjecture.
@@ComicTropes True. It would be interesting, but I doubt at least for the foreseeable future anyone would make the claim. Thanks for the reply.
How many levels of prank calling are there? Because you're seriously at the highest, Chris. How many times have you pretended to be Mark who works there?
Hi. You caught me committing a crime.
*FBI WANTS TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION*
LOL I had to click away during the Prank call. I just couldn't watch it happen! :D
I can't believe you've done this 😅
Keep the tropes on the wall :p
Sleeper showed Brubaker and Phillips had a knack for downbeat endings and they really capitalized with Criminal. The endings follow from the tragic flaws of the characters instead of random bad stuff happening to them. "Last of the Innocent" is a change of pace though: Leo, the Lawlesses and Gnarley might've been anti-heroes but Riley is flat-out the villain. He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever yet the story is diabolically constructed to make him sympathetic. So the bad ending is very different in his case.
Thanks for the video. Noir is hard to do.
thanks
How do i get my Gachapon
Nice
The new ball spinner for the fan art winner selection doesn't seem to work properly with a small number of balls -- they all just stay in place. Not that you need me to tell ya that...
You're the best
Dumb rant, but I really hate how they used to color Phillips' art back in the day. Those gradients look so bad.
Is my monitor broken?
Maybe fans should send this poor guy a camera & microphone instead of art...
Anyone else want Brubaker and Philips on a Jessica Jones"Alias" or x-factor investigations comic?
Yes please ❤❤
How is Chris not in jail yet?
Came for the video about "the boys", stayed for the funny intros!
Is there something wrong with the camera or is that just me?
Brian Turner I bumped my lens out of focus without realizing.
ComicTropes Ah okay, thanks for the reply 👍🏽
Kill or be killed really flopped for me especially at the end
It was great for me, up until the end, it could've been done better
The. Landslide I was hooked until like the last three. I feel like they were set on ending it before they really fleshed things out. Could used four or six more issues
My favorite comic combo is the edgyboy writing combo of J.M. DeMatteis and Keith Giffen.
was this video Noir cause your dark and out of focus... i like it =D
Noire seems to mean dark rather than black... Woeful sums it up very well.
English is a weird language.
If you like Noir read Blacksad
Man, you gotta get more focused.... get it? get it? .... :-D Nice episode!
If anyone is reading this I'd be very interested in some Ed brubakers work so if you have any recommendations pls let me know
Ed Brubaker proves Noir can be awesome, unlike miller where everything must be unhumanly ugly.
Gumby 3D, you say? Tell me more...
ive had both of the omnibus volumes sat on my shelf un read for far too long.
ed brubaker dc black label matches Malone story
Asbestos Gloves
Too bad the deluxe edition of vol 1 is OOP... I enjoyed the Fatale book also very much
Wow, I’m early
Is the camera really fuzzy or is that just me
You should have said your parents were anti-vaxers! Oh well, hind sight...if you like prank calls look up Jim Florentine! We had “Terrorizing Telemarketers”! He would try to get his name on as many lists as he could and they would call him. And, of course, he would jack with them.
So...ya think you’re gonna be safe with COPPA?
REAL QUESTION:
What the Hell is an "Anti-Villain"?
A character with noble goals who is ultimately the villain. A sympathetic villain.
@@ComicTropes Thank you, never heard of that Term before, great Video as always
