I’m a woman who just turned 50 on Thursday. My first console was Pong. All the years I’ve gamed, I wanted to blend in. I never once felt harassed, threatened or ignored by the guys I played with because I wasn’t trying to make it about me. I’ve also got a journalism degree. What is practiced today is not journalism. It’s propaganda rolled into opinion pieces. And these gaming sites are blogs, not journalism.
Any "journalist" that doesn't include "In this humble journalist's opinion" or something of the sort before stating an opinion, and only when it adds some value to the overall piece he is writing, is not a journalist, period. I used to think these were really silly words and found it odd when I was younger but nowadays we have the perfect example of why it became a thing in the first place - because a journalist's oppinion is irrelevant, he should be just the messenger. And ALL oppinions (in interviews, etc) should be stated as such, not passed as fact when it suits them. Truth is what sells, objective hard facts. If I wanted lies, all I have to do is go out and scoop them with a shovel for free... Without such distictions in place, what you are writing is not journalism, it's yellow news or pure propaganda. It was the final straw for me that made me quit watching TV altogether years ago. Commercials were a scourge and became ever so annoying and ever increasing, but if the news/programme behind them is done properly, I have a mute button at my disposal or I can do something else and come back until they're over. But when journalism died, so did my interest in TV. And newspapers, I used to buy at least one daily. But if it is all filled with sh*t and propaganda, it is not me who should pay for that sh*t. Now they've come into games, guess what's gonna happen next. Except this time, we have access to the whole world's creations and I can find a game from an indie dev or non-western devs that I can enjoy and pay for. Oh and happy birthday :) We don't get much happy occasions these days, but it makes us appreciate the few that we do get even more. It's better to focus on the good things nowadays, anyway, the other option just spirals into a neverending pit.
I think the straw that broke the camels back was making female characters ugly on purpose and framing it like it's a virtuous thing to be doing, nobody complains about men being "unrealistic" or too attractive, it boils down to insecure women in game companies forcing censorship on art all in a pathetic attempt to bandaid their own insecurities, they will do EVERYTHING except go to the gym a few times a week.

I am a 54 yr old female and I still have my Pong console as well as every other console I have ever played. I never had a problem with the guys I played games with back in the day. It was never about male/female "politics". It was about the love of the game and nothing more. I still play to this day along with my granddaughter. My son is currently stationed in Korea and we have a weekly gaming night where we both load up CoD and hang out while BSing and blowing stuff up. His barracks buddies thinks it is great that he has a mom that can throw down with them and keep up while talking mad smack to them. I love my gaming nights with my son.

I think a really cool thing they did with "messages" was in Disco Elysium. That game is made by socialists ( maybe someone would call them radical leftists ) and it has a lot of politics in the game. You can align to different ideologies, but all of the ideologies are made in to extreme satire. Like Communism is kind of a hero quest, it talks about lifting up the worker class and fight the capital oppressors, but it also comes with some insane commentary about the ideas, that make the characters seem absolutely psycho. And it is the same with liberals, and far rights. The most reasonable ideology is the moderate, but if you opt in for that one the game will constantly make fun of you for picking the most safe and boring option. I think if you are going to have politics in a game, you gotta be real smart about it. And it is more fun if it is satire. The people behind DE are just geniuses.
They were self aware enough that the message of communism was that it was doomed to failure and it only lasts a single minute before it collapses on itself (the construction they took months building). Same with the guy who is so rich he literally bends light itself, so you can't even see him. He's pretty chill about it too, doesn't even care about what's going on.
I remember the slogan "You asked for it and we delivered!" from developers that were passionate about their jobs and had a genuine respectful relationship with the fans because the fans were just as passionate about the game as they were when they created it. Now it's just the complete opposite and it feels like developers hate their jobs and make video games for themselves or an audience that simply doesn't exist. It's honestly really bizarre that they refuse to make the people that pay them happy, If the fans aren't happy you're obviously going to lose money right? it doesn't take a genius to understand what works and what doesn't..
The games that developers make for themselves are what we now call indie games and a lot of them are awesome. Those are the passion projects that devs pour their hearts into because they want to make a fun game they would love to play or tell a great story they would want to read. The problem is we now get AAA titles without that passion because the motivation is money… it’s no longer make a great game and the money will come.
@@OmegaF77 - 100% agreed, I mean the economic reality is that 14k-ish games released last year on steam alone. maybe 30 were AAA titles with marketing budgets that everyone hears about them, and maybe another 20 or so break out into the broader discussion that significant numbers of people hear about it. On average, people spend about $400 per year on gaming and the bulk of that is going to get soaked up by those 50 titles that they've heard about and all their friends are playing... which leaves a very small amount of available money per consumer with a very large pool of remaining indie games. Beyond that, let's be honest, just because its a passion project doesn't mean its good, so there is an inherrent risk to buying a title that released yesterday with 2 reviews from people you've never heard of -- and many people would rather risk their time and money elsewhere. My argument isn't that all indie titles are good and that all good games will be successful commercially, just that the motivations behind the creation of indie games tend to be more passion driven and not strictly a profit motive. If that's something that you as a consumer are interested in supporting, you should then consider allocating more of your gaming budget to that segment of the market.

The former tries to bring everyone down to a common denominator regardless of their talents and the effort they've invested to reach a state that gives them these advantages in the first place. It's an attempt to please the resentful and jealous ones, the ones that want what others have worked for without having to put in the effort. It is the definition of unfairness. From nothing comes nothing and people do not automatically deserve something for doing nothing or less, especially when it comes at the expense of everyone else involved. Talent and effort to achieve greatness ultimately benefits everyone, even more so when it comes to the economy and business. Forced equity (kind of redundant because equity can only be reached by enforcement) rewards low to no effort at the cost of everyone else that could do better. It makes everyone equally miserable e.g. crabs in a bucket. Equality of opportunity tries to give everyone the same starting point where everyone can achieve greatness by investing energy. The outcome will never be equal because humans are different but everyone can achieve greatness within their means not only to their own benefit (economically and mentally speaking) but indirectly and ultimately to the benefit of other people too. There will always be leeches that demand for collectivism to "fairly" distribute wealth and there will always be good natured people that fall for it because they keep ignoring history and human nature.

The problem that people have with the newest AC is that having the main character be Japanese would have been historically accurate and still diverse. The problem with modern "journalism" is much of it is just opinion pieces masquerading as factual reporting, it is almost comical how many articles are so blatantly biased and attempting to tell the reader what to think.

You guys realise that the background of the main characters is decided in pre production and not something that gets decided on to check boxes later on right? I am not defending Ubisoft, but this is how things work. TLDR: I think they didn't mean harm but they got clapped anyway with how things unfolded for them later. Also for those who wanted "historically accurate" settings... The AC games and the Animus/Alternate reality is a core part of their story. The solution for gamers is very simple, completely boycott all studios/publishers involved with these games. With some of these companies permanently boycotting is needed. There's always going to be a smaller better company that is more than eager to take the place of these games and given how things have been going, these smaller companies may actually replace the larger games with better quality/enjoyability

A good recent example is The Boys, that show was always the same but had people just noticing the writers hate them by season 4. That also happened back in season 2. Some of those that still liked it until season 4 compliment the subtlety. They're able to delude themselves into thinking it's good until they eventually notice.

I used to think these were really silly words and found it odd when I was younger but nowadays we have the perfect example of why it became a thing in the first place - because a journalist's oppinion is irrelevant, he should be just the messenger. And ALL oppinions (in interviews, etc) should be stated as such, not passed as fact when it suits them. Truth is what sells, objective hard facts. If I wanted lies, all I have to do is go out and scoop them with a shovel for free...
Without such distictions in place, what you are writing is not journalism, it's yellow news or pure propaganda. It was the final straw for me that made me quit watching TV altogether years ago. Commercials were a scourge and became ever so annoying and ever increasing, but if the news/programme behind them is done properly, I have a mute button at my disposal or I can do something else and come back until they're over. But when journalism died, so did my interest in TV. And newspapers, I used to buy at least one daily. But if it is all filled with sh*t and propaganda, it is not me who should pay for that sh*t.
Now they've come into games, guess what's gonna happen next. Except this time, we have access to the whole world's creations and I can find a game from an indie dev or non-western devs that I can enjoy and pay for.

I am a 54 yr old female and I still have my Pong console as well as every other console I have ever played. I never had a problem with the guys I played games with back in the day. They took over academia, much of media, and have gotten inside games to further the "victim/oppressor" narrative, to slowly pull the levers of our laws, siphoning our rights away slowly in the name of equity and fairness. I know women who choose to play beefy male characters… literally no normal person cares the race/gender/sexuality of characters. I think a really cool thing they did with "messages" was in Disco Elysium. That game is made by socialists ( maybe someone would call them radical leftists ) and it has a lot of politics in the game. You can align to different ideologies, but all of the ideologies are made in to extreme satire.
Like Communism is kind of a hero quest, it talks about lifting up the worker class and fight the capital oppressors, but it also comes with some insane commentary about the ideas, that make the characters seem absolutely psycho.
And it is the same with liberals, and far rights. The most reasonable ideology is the moderate, but if you opt in for that one the game will constantly make fun of you for picking the most safe and boring option.
I think if you are going to have politics in a game, you gotta be real smart about it. And it is more fun if it is satire. The people behind DE are just geniuses.
They were self aware enough that the message of communism was that it was doomed to failure and it only lasts a single minute before it collapses on itself (the construction they took months building).

I remember the slogan "You asked for it and we delivered!" from developers that were passionate about their jobs and had a genuine respectful relationship with the fans because the fans were just as passionate about the game as they were when they created it. Now it's just the complete opposite and it feels like developers hate their jobs and make video games for themselves or an audience that simply doesn't exist. It's honestly really bizarre that they refuse to make the people that pay them happy, If the fans aren't happy you're obviously going to lose money right? it doesn't take a genius to understand what works and what doesn't..
The games that developers make for themselves are what we now call indie games and a lot of them are awesome. Those are the passion projects that devs pour their hearts into because they want to make a fun game they would love to play or tell a great story they would want to read. The problem is we now get AAA titles without that passion because the motivation is money… it’s no longer make a great game and the money will come.

@@OmegaF77 - 100% agreed, I mean the economic reality is that 14k-ish games released last year on steam alone. maybe 30 were AAA titles with marketing budgets that everyone hears about them, and maybe another 20 or so break out into the broader discussion that significant numbers of people hear about it. On average, people spend about $400 per year on gaming and the bulk of that is going to get soaked up by those 50 titles that they've heard about and all their friends are playing... which leaves a very small amount of available money per consumer with a very large pool of remaining indie games. Beyond that, let's be honest, just because its a passion project doesn't mean its good, so there is an inherrent risk to buying a title that released yesterday with 2 reviews from people you've never heard of -- and many people would rather risk their time and money elsewhere.
My argument isn't that all indie titles are good and that all good games will be successful commercially, just that the motivations behind the creation of indie games tend to be more passion driven and not strictly a profit motive. If that's something that you as a consumer are interested in supporting, you should then consider allocating more of your gaming budget to that segment of the market.

The former tries to bring everyone down to a common denominator regardless of their talents and the effort they've invested to reach a state that gives them these advantages in the first place. It's an attempt to please the resentful and jealous ones, the ones that want what others have worked for without having to put in the effort. It is the definition of unfairness. From nothing comes nothing and people do not automatically deserve something for doing nothing or less, especially when it comes at the expense of everyone else involved. Talent and effort to achieve greatness ultimately benefits everyone, even more so when it comes to the economy and business. Forced equity (kind of redundant because equity can only be reached by enforcement) rewards low to no effort at the cost of everyone else that could do better. It makes everyone equally miserable e.g. crabs in a bucket.
Equality of opportunity tries to give everyone the same starting point where everyone can achieve greatness by investing energy. The outcome will never be equal because humans are different but everyone can achieve greatness within their means not only to their own benefit (economically and mentally speaking) but indirectly and ultimately to the benefit of other people too. There will always be leeches that demand for collectivism to "fairly" distribute wealth and there will always be good natured people that fall for it because they keep ignoring history and human nature.

The problem that people have with the newest AC is that having the main character be Japanese would have been historically accurate and still diverse.

You guys realise that the background of the main characters is decided in pre production and not something that gets decided on to check boxes later on right? Stop pre-ordering. Very quickly you’ll see them putting out more polished, better done games. Theres way too much unearned money getting thrown at games for any of them to care to do better. Gamers’ need for that little boost or unique thing as a gift for pre-ordering has been funding the spit in our faces.
The solution for gamers is very simple, completely boycott all studios/publishers involved with these games. With some of these companies permanently boycotting is needed. There's always going to be a smaller better company that is more than eager to take the place of these games and given how things have been going, these smaller companies may actually replace the larger games with better quality/enjoyability

A good recent example is The Boys, that show was always the same but had people just noticing the writers hate them by season 4. That also happened back in season 2. Some of those that still liked it until season 4 compliment the subtlety. They're able to delude themselves into thinking it's good until they eventually notice.
