Apparently at IGN, the difference between a 7 (Concord) and an 8 (Black Myth: Wukong) is the difference between the worst calamity in gaming history and record-breaking sales.

@@justinhadasch I think them being a few years behind current cultural norms is only a fraction of the problem, to be honest. Another major problem is trend-chasing in a general sense - something that has not let to profitability or making best-selling games yet is still done very often. Then you have the problem of culture in development studios and management leading to them making games nobody wants even if they could have made something else. Sure, if they released these games a few years ago, they might have done a bit better - but I think it's extremely naive if anyone thinks that they would have been nearly as successful as if they had simply just made a good game instead. Making a bad stuff with DEI doesn't make it good, and games can have plenty of diversity and so on like Baldur's Gate 3 and still be massively loved by the vast majority because the underlying game is just so well made. The problem, as Asmongold has said, is with bad games - not LGBT issues or DEI or so on. Sure, some people won't buy a game because of such things, but the vast majority of people will buy a great and enjoyable game regardless of things like the skin color of the protagonist or so on. Make a game that has no audience, and eventually you won't be able to sell it. This is common sense, but seems to have been forgotten by many large-scale developers and publishers. You can coast on good will for many years, but eventually people will start moving towards other alternatives in the majority of cases made by more competent developers.
The saying goes "Losers make excuses, and winners win". This goof made a whole fanfic of reasons why concord, a game backed by a billion if not trillion dollar company, failed.
No, it's opposite. When they make games they way the want, you get something really interesting, and not another samey game. The medium is stagnating for years now.
exactly where i love my classic roguelike "rogue fable 4" it just goes to show a good game is based on a devs dedication to making a quality game and not about trying to put money into some company's pocket who doesnt even care if the game is good and just want to market it blindly
What's interesting about Fortnite in this conversation is that a lot of people don't know or have forgotten that Fortnite was originally designed to be a premium price video game that was 4 player cooperative and you defended a base against zombies. And you could repair the base. The building mechanic was already part of the game. But I think they noticed early on that there didn't seem to be very much interest and so Epic Games reinvented it to be what it is now. Which was obviously smart.

I don't think Sony offering refunds is as commendable as people think, 1 as Asmon pointed, the difference was between losing 99% of their money or losing 100%, 2 not everyone refunds games in this situation, probably more than half of the people who bought it didn't refund it, and 3 they probably would've been sued for 5 times what it took to make the game if they didn't offer refunds
Offering refunds is the smartest thing, that way they can say they didn't make a dime and use a loophole to write it off as a loss. Can't do that if they sell even 1 copy.

I sort of agree. But I think that they're trying to find the whales. We aren't a target demigraph anymore. They're looking for spenders not players. You dont. When Sony bough Bungie, 8 years ago, there were originally 12 live service videogames in development. More than half of those games were canceled after being review bombed by the new Bungie exces but gave Concord a green light. So the budget of those games was transfered to Concord. So Concord originally had a smaller budget

DEI isn't even the primary cause, it's the simple fact that it's a bad product by every metric. Consumers couldn't care less about what the company does as long as the game is good. Crunch and rampant worker exploitation across the industry are good examples of that. Consumers also aren't particularly bothered with politics in games, as long as the game is good. Disco Elysium is a great example of that. Make good games and people will forgive a multitude of sins. However, if the product is bad, all that forgiveness evaporates.

Asmon is correct, and not taking crazy pills, but it IS crazy how hard articulating the issue is. Put simply, many professional critics these days have confused themselves into thinking they are tastemakers. They are not, they exist in a space fundamentally identified by the market as advanced purchasing information providers. This space will never change no matter how flowery OR hostile the rhetoric (lookin' at you, Wukong reviewers.) When the user review of any product, video game or movie or company or otherwise, disagrees so completely in either direction, it is not merely a disagreement over the quality of the product, but a direct indictment against the initial review. Not only does a video game reviewer NOT have the responsibility to teach the market what a good game looks like, they simply do not have the capability. It is a sad delusion, and it will die on its own, no need for action, carry on as usual.
its crazy a 12 year old re-release of a game, apb reloaded got 650 additional average players after a recent update. that game has 2 devs working on the game part time, and 2 people taking care of support and forums

Concord would've failed even if it came out at the height of Hero Shooters. It fundamentally is boring and uninteresting from both gameplay and visuals. If military shooter gameplay looks more exciting than Concord's hero shooter game play then you have a problem. Just looking at the footage on this video, all the characters look slow and heavy. The few moves that give a burst of energy just look boringly functional. How do you have a character with a rocket launcher capable of rocketing to an enemy to rocket kick them look boring?
In an exam, 5/10 is just making it. Below that is a fail unless the teacher is feeling generous. And that's what most people will think about when they see that scale used.
This is exactly what i was thinking. They talk about how bad the writing is and how bland the gameplay is yet they give it a 7/10 IGN ratings right there.
With limited number of consoles they are trying to put out unlimited games. Not every game has to be a banger. We just want games we enjoy playing from someone who enjoyed making them.
No one remembers “Crucible” from AGS. Got pulled from beta in 2020, and never brought back because of how poorly it did. Even after having streamers promote it. Same mistakes. Bland and no identity. No kidding….its mind boggling. lol…
Its because they are a few yeears behind. They started making these games when the whole lgtb stuff was heavily on the rise.
Things have changed and we will probably see changes away from dei focused stuff in a few years
@@justinhadasch I think them being a few years behind current cultural norms is only a fraction of the problem, to be honest.
You can coast on good will for many years, but eventually people will start moving towards other alternatives in the majority of cases made by more competent developers.

its crazy a 12 year old re-release of a game, apb reloaded got 650 additional average players after a recent update. that game has 2 devs working on the game part time, and 2 people taking care of support and forums
7/10 is just a cop out rating. It's like trying to change the subject when she asks "Does this dress make my ass look fat?"
No = calling my ass small, Yes = you think I am fat and therefore ugly.
I think Valheim is probably one of the best examples in recent years of a very flawed game being a 9 or 10 out of 10 due to the core gameplay being so good that all of those flaws become almost irrelevant in comparison.
Having actually played Concord, a 7/10 feels fair. I feel like if it was free to play, it would have done a little better.
"It matches your hair color very nicely"
I think reviews have shifted and its not a 10 scale but a 5 scale so 7/10 = 2/5
You can't give them a 6.5 or lower bc the devs and publisher will get mad on you and you won't get any test samples anymore for future games. That's the whole reason.
Yup. Access Journalism has ruined video game related journalism entirely.
Games, peripherals, whatever. If you give an honest review of a bad product, then they simply no longer let you review their products.

They refuse to say the game was a woke pile of garbage and dance carefully around it….It’s obvious why it failed. Gamers are sick of that BS….
Even if it is not woke, the game will fail regardless. The core gameplay is just too basic and yet missing so much, too much confidence as well. But I do agree, all the idea of this game, from the design, character, and story They literally pushed woke agenda a little too much into their game.

My PS3 has turned into our blu-ray player and it’s damn good at it.
Rip Sony.
Correct, it was basically the one of the best and cheapest Blu-Ray player at that time, since it was Sony technology. I don't know the exact prices anymore but I remember that the console was basically or even actually for free if you count in the Blu-Ray player.
Also the base PS3 model at launch had ps2 backwards compatibility, so you coukd play PS1, 2 and 3 games (when they eventually came). PS5 Pro cant even play PS5 games if you bought GoW Ragnarok or TLoU P2 physically
Also why the PS 2 had a big push. DVD players were expensive in Japan but the PS2 was much cheaper and you get a video game console as well.
I find the comparisons of Concord to Redfall kinda ridiculous. Unlike Concord, there was an untapped market for Redfall(vampires) to be successful. Redfall was just poorly executed in that delivery. Absolutely no one asked for a watered down version of overwatch.
Redfall failed far before bethesda revealed it. It was speculated that it would be the next iteration elder scrolls. REDguard + DaggerFALL = redfall. Bethesda fans are fed up with waiting 15+ years waiting for the next elderscrolls game while flop after flop comes out of bethesda that no one asked for (vampires included)
When I first played Red Fall I remember thinking, "wow!!! what a load of crap!"

Space Marine 2 is a mid, 7/10 game. It has repetitive gameplay, good visuals, poor sound design, no DEI. It's just that in a sea of terrible goyslop, it stands out as a decent enough game.

Their actual audience is just funko-pop collectors.
Because you don’t understand IGN’s review process. We had this discussion about a decade ago, and IGN was forced to clarify.
An IGN 5 is a 1 everywhere else, 5 means the game runs. Below that, you’re looking at completely broken, buggy messes, scam games and basically mobile ports.

A great irl example (of what you were trying to explain) is toll roads.
Instead of making highways more efficient, they instead made a toll road that takes the fastest route from a to b, with less construction, and better condition.
