Great idea. I would request closed cabinets on the bottom and then book shelves up to the ceiling. It’s a great room to create a library for the family, a reading room away from the busy areas of the home.

When we renovated our bathroom, we did put a transom window in the shower. We get a lot of natural sunlight in from our hallway and the window is nice. It’s a piece of thick seeded glass.

Allie has a great idea. Though archways, don’t really agree style wise with your home. So straight sided built in book shelves would work well. Another trick to retain some of natural light into the sun room, is to incorporate mirrors to line the back of the built in book case. This will expand the space, even with decor and books in front of them.
Baby boy name suggestion: have you considered naming him after Trent's grandfather? He's such a sweet man ❤

Allie, you have the opportunity to make the mud room into a more efficient mud room, place a row of full height cupboards across that back wall. You have a lot of winter and outdoor “stuff” to be able to keep it contained would be a bonus.😊

Consider that there is less than five and a half inches of depth to these shelves unless they decide to build out from the wall. Theses shelves will be GREAT for tchochkes but not much else... you know the things some people think are cute that gather dust and need to be cleaned often. Allie will be happy which will make Trent happy... all for pretty much little more than a dust collector. As someone famous once said... "much ado about nothing."

Think about putting a ceiling fan light fixture in the big room. If the room's heat is trapping up high, the fan with blades reversed to push air downward will make a big difference and save on heating costs while increasing comfort. And if it gets warm in the summer reverse the blades to push air up and around to give air circulation and an adjustable breeze. Another energy saver.
Needs a stronger stud mounted light box to support the weight and movement.
I agree with the ceiling fan but not with a light...so dated and not what you'd find in high-end homes.
Yes, ours run 24/7 on low speed usually. Helps with heat/AC circulation. We're in OK, it gets 🔥 hot in the summer!

Your sunroom is always going to be your most used entrance; therefore it will always be a ‘drop zone’. I would install cubbies or shelves so at least you can drop stuff and keep it organized.

Allie I absolutely agree with you. I would make both windows into shelves. I wouldn't do an arch but I would use them as book shelves and for whatever else you want to put on them. You did mention it would be cool to sit and read a book. I'm hoping Trent will love it as much as we all do in the end. 😊❤

Back when I was a kid my father built a garage on the side of the house there were originally two windows there. My mother decided that she would take those two windows and make shelves out of them. You can hear everything that happened in the garage even people's voices. So if you decide to make shelves there's just no there will be no silence.
About the shelves, Allie, I think you're absolutely right!!! Inset shelving right there would be sooo cute, particularly with an arched top, but, here's a simpler way to achieve what you're looking for... keep the 2x4 s where they are, and have 3 sections of shelving... instead of actually building the ceiling of the sheving into an arch, simply cut out an arched panel, with perhaps some cut outs, or architectural trim to make it look more like furniture, and install it over the top of the shelves... much easier that way, very similar effect... love watching you guys, and darling little Leo!!!

I think that was a great idea that Allie had. Those arched wall compartments will look amazing. They will also complement the inside door of the sunroom with the "arch" at the top of it and vice versa.

I like the sentimental name of Les for a couple of reasons. In honor of Allie's mom, plus it's a short "L" name like his brother, Leo.

I would have insulated and drywalled that wall where the shelves are going and then just done a built-in shelving on the other side out of wood. Extra insulation would help with noise on the other side of that wall also.

Per your comment about hanging the TV over the fireplace, I would highly recommend blocking in the mounting spot with 2x8 boards...Anywhere a mounting needs to be 2x6 or 2x8 or 2x10 blocking will save you headaches later.

I'm so glad that Allie got her arches. I could tell she really wanted them, and Trent's ...hesitation, let's call it, was just because he was on a roll and the arches looked like a rock in the path. All's well that ends well. They will look great and be a nice touch in the away-from-kids area (something all parents need).
I agree 💯 with Allie. When you're building is the time to make the additions, even if it takes more time... Besides, if you added a shelf to a wall you would be constantly bumping into it and wishing you would have done what Allie wanted...
Allie, another suggestion you can make to Trent. Create an extended awning from the back door of the addition. Have Trent and team make some Greek pillars to support the awning. Call it a homage to antiquity. Somewhere on the house, build two or three French gothic gargoyles perched on the roof -- such as a stylized moose.
A Cafe table and chairs in the mud room would be a nice addition. I had to laugh when Allie said they could use that room as a, get away from the kids room, there's no such thing as getting away from the kids unless they're sleeping. I think Hunter would be a good name for a boy who lives on a mountain.

My only insight on that "office" wall is, if that space is no longer conditioned, you have no insulation between that sun room and the new addition.

And l know you're glad you did it because the shelves will look great and they won't take up space like a piece of furniture.

Before you mentioned the idea to the guys, I was thinking that instead of hanging drywall and covering the holes where the windows use to be, you should build some shelves to give you more places to help you keep the room organized.

Great minds....I've been thinking the same thing. As for it being so much more work....can't see it myself. I mentioned it to my husband too (he's a builder) and he couldn't see any problem with putting shelves on one side (he did that here in the kids rooms and my craft/sewing room). I guess Trent's brain is on just one track at this point of the build and can't see past that.
Allie, I know exactly what you're talking about. We had a window in our dining room that use to go out to our porch, but we ended up enclosing our porch so it was no longer functional. My husband actually surprised me by putting in a niche in the space with an arched top. I love it! Wish I could attach pictures so Trent could see how awesome it would be.

I currently live in a home that while it is good sized, it is relatively open concept and very short on walls and storage. Ally’s idea to creat built in shelving is a great idea. Just like opening space between studs on indoor walls to create more storage nooks.

Trent has his garage with all the amenities. The shelves would multitask throughout the years. I agree Allie, now is the time to do it and will look better, be sturdier being a built in.

Trent during your electrical rough in you really should start to think about Cat6 cabling. WiFi is great but hardwiring is better. Find an area in the home (central to everything) and do all the required “wiring” to move your Starlink router there in the future. Then run data (cat6) cables to key areas like where your smart TVs, home office, alarm panels, smart thermostats, smoke detectors, PoE security cameras, etc. Then run those cables back to where the starlink router will live. You can buy an inexpensive PoE switch big enough for all the data cables you ran. That switch will plug into your starlink router. Only use WiFi when you absolutely have to.
Bless everyone’s brains and the rest of the body parts, because I have never seen the north pole, but I do think it looks like where you live. And, I keep waiting for Santa Class and reindeer to come past your windows as he waves on his way home!

Boy name: Kole or Cole because you have Joel and Leo which both have the letters o-l-e in them, so keeping in the same vein... Kole! Or I also like Caleb, Aiden, Kaden, Elliot, Ezra, Milo, Theo, Colton, Cooper, Luke, Luca, or Lucas. So many good ones to choose from. I don't know what Trent's grandpa's name is, but I like the suggestion that someone had of naming your baby after Trent's grandpa.

Trent - Allie is right. You have the ability to do it now, you might as well do it. You can't argue with Allie over everything! It's not always easy, but the end result is worth it! It's her home, she gets to make some decisions too!

Did you not watch the video, he is building the arched shelves. He may complain but Allie always gets her way. Trent is the hardest worker, this build is huge for a DIYer. He is building it because Allie wanted another child. I can't understand why you all think he is a terrible husband, I would have felt blessed if my ex was half the man Trent is.

We have a grandson name Eli Dominic, and I love his name. It is so much easier for a child to learn to spell a first name that has only a few letters. Allie, I love the idea of the arched bookcases. A perfect place for all those good books you're going to read in your cozy reading room. An overstuffed chair and loveseat with one of the many homemade afghans from your subscribers. Of course a side table for your morning coffee.
Don’t get me started on Trent and his toys!! Still no hot tub, Allie! You deserve any shelves you want!!

Some rounded shapes in that room would soften it a bit with all the boxy stuff in there. You can put a nice floor lamp between two chairs for reading.

Allie the reading room is an excellent idea! We enclosed our screened side porch and made it our Reading Room and we have an electric fireplace in there….with 4 kids and 6 grandchildren, it is a nice escape room mostly for my husband who cannot handle the chaos!!! 😂Lots of light, warmth in the winter and blessed solitude when needed ❤
