HI THEATRE FRIENDS! Today, we're having a rainy, cloudy day in Los Angeles which means it's the perfect time to ignore all your responsibilities and listen to some show tunes! I've been getting a lot of requests to share some show recommendations, so today's video is going be al about my favorite most-medium-on-the-popularity-scale shows / cast recordings!! So, you won't see shows like Hamilton or Dear Evan Hansen in this list-- they're great shows! I'm just here to recommend something you might not know! But, I'm also not out here recommending the most obscure shows of all time either!

Katherine Steele my favorite cast recording is Mean Girls because it’s my favorite show. I have callbacks tomorrow for my school’s production of Little Mermaid. I’ve been listening to it constantly and I’m loving it.

That's ok! I was in you exact same position like a year or two ago! Here are some recommendations that are great for beginners:
-Sweeney Todd- this show seems a lot scarier than it is. It is such a great intro to classical musicals. The story is pretty easy to understand yet complex and interesting. The songs are very unique and definitely strange if you are not familiar but it is still very engaging. It is still my favorite Musical of all time.
-Little Shop of Horrors is a campy sci-fi classic that is very reminiscent of Be More Chill. The composer wrote a lot of the classic Disney music so it's not that hard to get into. And if you are thinking of becoming a theater preformer, you will probably end up doing it eventually and it is pretty important to know
-six is a pop musical based of the music of many iconic Stars like Beyonce and Adele. It is meant to be enjoyed as a concert, so each song essentially has its own story arc making it very easy to follow. A great start.
-Mean girls has some great songs and generally shows based on movies you have already seen are great for beginners because you don't need to worry about not understanding the story. Great ones include Legally Blonde, SpongeBob, Shrek, Carrie, and Beetlejuice.
Hoped this helped. I know musical theater seems like a scary thing to get into, but, like everything, it will get easier as you go on. Enjoy Listening!
Be More Chill is my favorite musical and I am still trying to listen to more musicals. It was hard to listen to Hamilton :’)

Currently obsessed with “36questions”, it’s a podcast musical. So the whole thing is available online! It’s such an interesting take on modern musicals and exploring the boundaries en pushing them! It’s really fun, and definitely worth a listen!

i’m currently obsessed with 36 Questions: The Podcast musical! it stars Jonathan Groff and Jessie Shelton. the music is gorgeous, the plot is amazing, and ofc the acting and singing is incredible. it’s about a married couple trying to salvage their marriage by using the 36 Questions. i listened to it on Spotify

it has a similar ending. a man named Seymour gets coerced into doing horrible things to win the love of Audrey, his coworker. but he takes it too far and eventually the world ends.

What is starkid
rettas random universe it’s basically this theatre group that put all their musicals onto RUclips for free. They are all so amazing and talented, they’ve done stuff like ‘ a very potter musical’ and ‘firebringer’(which is where the “I don’t really wanna do the work today” vine came from if you know it). But anyway, highly recommend and everything they do is just so iconic and amazing❤️

I’m really in love with come from away. It’s a musical based on a true story about nine eleven. I love listening to the soundtrack and can’t wait to see it next month live.
Come From Away is so gorgeous. I almost got to see it, but I just missed out on tickets! The soundtrack is definitely one of my go-tos.

YES BARE: A POP OPERA! I second this recommendation! I was not expecting that to be on that to be on this list, least of all be the first one mentioned. And you're the one of the only people I've seen who doesn't have a deep hatred towards the musical. Katherine I somehow respect you even more now.
Also a recommendation I have for everyone is The View Upstairs! It just ended it's West End run a month ago and there's an off-Broadway cast recording. It's such a beautiful and insightful show and each of the songs have their own style yet it all fits together so perfectly.

The Lightning Thief - Which I know you already reacted to but I am still so not over this show. My Grand Plan and Bring on the Monsters are on permanent loop.
Is the Lightning thief good ? Because I've heard of it and like know it's a thing but I have no idea if the feedback is generally positive or not lol. I'm curious tho because I loved the books and feel like it could genuinely be a nice musical.

i actually learned a lot of theatre songs through a little show called ‘glee’
i learned about company and it introduced me to wicked as well as west side story and ofc the song “the boy next door” i watched this show RELIGIOUSLY and i still adore it so i recommend many of their covers bc honestly i rly like a bunch of them🖤

I'm currently obsessed with starkid musicals, they're the ones who did A Very Potter Musical! All of them are hilarious but my favorite is probably Twisted for the songs (also aaaaaa I just saw Miss Saigon in the theater and it made me cry ghjklk)

35MM: A Musical Exhibition is one of my favorite cast albums to listen to. It takes photographs and creates songs based off those photographs. It doesn't have a story, and you aren't missing any other action by listening to the album.
Here’s some shows I recommend:
Fractured: The Mysterious Case Of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (it’s another Jekyll and Hyde musical. This one is more focused on the book. And it’s completely underrated. It’s a good musical. The full show is on RUclips if you search the full title, and the album is on Spotify and Soundcloud. It’s a really good show!
The Mystery Of Edwin Drood (Stephanie J Block is amazing in this musical! That’s all I’m gonna say.)
American Idiot (If you love Green Day, then this musical is for you.)
Memphis (The London Cast Recording with Beverly Knight is really amazing. It’s an amazing show!)
Dracula (It’s by the same guy who composed Bonnie and Clyde, Death Note and Jekyll and Hyde, and I would 10/10 recommend it.)
Here’s some shows I love that don’t get enough attention: 35MM, 36 Questions, anything Starkid related (yes Tin Can Bros/Spies are Forever counts here), Once on This Island, Head Over Heels, We are the Tigers, Dogfight, Things to Ruin and The Spongebob Musical (god please will SOMEONE listen to this show???)
And of course for some popular ones: Hadestown (my current obsession), Six

I don't know how popular it is still but I just fell back in love with Finding Neverland and it's so good. For anyone who hasn't listened, I strongly recommend. If you're a fan of Glee, Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) was the original star!
Ella Powell I went to see the original Broadway production of "Finding Neverland" as part of an overnight college trip to NYC in 2015. I remember liking it a lot. On top of that, it was nice to see Matthew Morrison and Kelsey Grammer onstage.

This video just popped up on my recommended after a long day at work...listening to The Last a Five Years!!!! I recently fell in love with the show all over again after an old relationship of mine tainted my view of the musical, but in reality it makes me appreciate it with a brand new set of eyes. Couldn’t recommend it more, pumped to binge a bunch of your content tonight.
