  • I paid £300 and saw Tom Holland in the terrible Jamie Lloyd Romeo and Juliet production so that you don't have to.
    If you listen carefully, Shakespeare is turning in his grave.

    Yes Jamie Lloyd does accessible tickets, and it's great that he does, but as someome who tried to get one, i wouldnt characterise it as him making sure everyone can get a ticket. There was 5,000 accessible tickets and I logged in as soon as the sale opened and had over 20,000 people in front of me in the queue.
    Edit: Jesus 'YOU CAN'T LEAVE YOUR SEATS FOR ANY REASON' is so incredibly ableist. Also, during an asthma attack you're meant to use your inhaler a max of 10 times and if that doesn't relieve it, call an ambulance. So if she actually used her inhaler like 10 times that definitely sounds like an attack or very close to one.

    It makes me so mad when people attribute the failings of a production just to minimalism.
    A good director can make a brilliant production out of just a chair, some good light design, and by making the actors act the hell out of their characters, and I've seen it done!
    Imo more often than not when a star director does a horrible job it's because they were surrounded by yes-men who never challenged their decisions lol.

    You put it into words so well!! The play was so boring and I left the theater thinking "well guess I'm just not really into Shakespeare?" since I didn't really have any comparison, but it being unfinished would just make so much more sense ahah. My friend and I were in London only for a few days (mainly to see Hadestown, which was incredible) and went through the hell of getting these tickets for Tom Holland. But the whole play I was just kinda sad we actually managed to get them, cause otherwise we'd be seeing Les Mis and that would be just an infinitely better experience. But I did like the screens..at least it was somewhat original, altho only now I learned that people weren't allowed to leave their seats (we sat in the circle, they didn't tell us that) and yeah that could've gone wrong, it wasn't really a cool enough stunt to be worth that restriction.

    I saw (and LOVED) Jamie Lloyd's production of Sunset Boulevard last year - his use of minimalism and moving cameras with live close-ups worked really well as a metaphor for the emptiness of Norma's life - constantly referencing her wealth and grandeur while she's surrounded by nothing, live feed cameras backstage and even outside the theatre on the street showing how showbiz is so invasive, close-up live feeds on the faces of the actors to emphasise misogynistic attitudes to women's appearances as they age. It all really, really worked - because the camera work and live feeds and minimalism FIT the story they were telling. This review sounds like he tried to copy-paste all of those directoral choices into a story which has completely different themes, which obviously wouldn't work at all.

    Wow, being told with that level of severity that you can't leave is too much. I get that Lloyd has to try and outdo himself from previous productions, especially with the critical success of Sunset Boulevard last year, but you do have to treat your audiences properly.
    I went to watch Starlight Express this weekend, and the Usher did say that if anyone needed to leave the auditorium that they should get his attention to get him to take you out, and that you wouldn't be readmitted until after the interval. But he did explain the reasoning being that the entrance to our seating area was a major entrance for the actors and since the skating track went around the whole theatre, that is was a health risk for audience members just to get up and leave willy nilly when the actors are zooming around on roller skates. The fact he explained the logistics of it so that we all understood did make a difference.

    • @ConnieGlynn30
      @ConnieGlynn30  Месяц назад +13

      First of all!!! SO JEALOUS YOU SAW STARLIGHT EXPRESS!!!!
      Secondly, that makes infinitely more sense. I don’t know why they didn’t say ‘if you need to leave please get our attention so we can assist you’ it was such an odd way to go about it.

      I had a similar experience with seeing cabaret on Broadway recently. They made it clear they don’t do late seating besides a few exceptions. I didn’t mind because at least they had a good reason similar to starlight express and everyone got their act together to be on time for once lol.

    i can't really say they whether the performances were good or bad, because they were clearly just doing what they were told, and what they were told to do was baffling
    jamie lloyd's sunset blvd was incredible, my standing ovation was primarily for the direction, but this... my criticism is 100% for the direction/production design. just why. what was the point of any of it (other than to make money)

    Also for anyone who didn’t see it that impression was pretty accurate and Freema stole the whole show for me whenever she came on I think I sat up a little straighter 😅
    Re the leaving your seat: I was never told that in the venue, but it mentioned it in the pre show email I got. I actually thought it was weird once my ticket was checked at the entrance I was pretty much left to by own devices to find my seat? So maybe (hopefully) they realised how bad of an idea that was

    II feel so sad by the choices Tom has made for movies, shows, and theater roles. He's such an amazing and versatile actor, but he never seems to pick the right projects. I believe he should consider a cozy romcom for a refreshing comeback. To break free from being typecast as the Spidey character, he often chooses darker roles, but I think that's where the problem lies. He needs a more relaxed character with a strong story to truly showcase his potential.

      Also despite not seeing the play; after reading some painful reviews , I had to rewatch Zendaya's Malcom and Marie (yes I know not at all related) to remind myself that usually dull scenes can be fantastic. It's all about the presence especially in stage!

  • @odilejones9129
    @odilejones9129 Месяц назад +5

    Out of curiousity did you read any of the reviews before you bought tickets? because the majority said it was bad. THEN someone leaked some clips of it online. And yeah...I couldn't sit through that for 2 hours. Which is such a shame cause I saw Jamie Lloyd's sunset boulevard with Nicole Scherzinger. IT WAS PHENOMENAL. And the cameras actually made sense cause it' a story about Hollywood and movies, Norma is an actress, Joe is a screenwriter. It added to it.

    • @ConnieGlynn30

      I bought the tickets at pre-sale so there weren't any reviews yet. I assumed it would be good based on my previous experience of Lloyd and was, of course, very disappointed.

    I didn't see this- but the excessive use of cameras sounds like he's trying to emulate sarah snook's dorian gray SOOOOO bad. and that would be fine if there was a reason behind it, but honestly it sounds pretty gimmicky. Hope that poor girl next to you was okay in the end!!!

    The whole camera but I first saw 5 years ago in local belrin Alternative performance theaters. And it alwys made it soso cool. Because for example they had a whole house build on stage and when tejy got in you just say some shadows in the window. But with the cameras you see them inside etc. makes it 4D or sownthing. But this seems like a cheap copy or just a bad use of it

    Sounds like Lloyd took the production way too seriously, but put zero actual effort in. A lot of hype little substance. Particularly since Romeo is definitely supposed to be a lighthearted character.

    I heard Jamie Lloyd's Sunset Boulevard was good & this wasn't good. I just don't understand the stripped down & video not all shows need it. So now it's been announced he's directing so many more shows in the coming year or so
    Also not a fan of if you go to the bathroom or something you can't get back in probably until after the act.

    I've never heard of Jamie Lloyd before this play, but I did learn that extreme minimalism was his thing and that it's definitely hit or miss with theater fans. I was initially disappointed to learn that because I love a flashy play (and lol I don't like minimalism). But some people loved it (and of course people will just wave those positives off as "fangirls" who are biased). I have seen very positive professional critic reviews alongside the negative ones. I saw the major publication critics listed out and there were more positive reviews than negative. I love how you only focused on the negative tiktoks and negative reviews because you yourself hated the play.
