  • There's an endless stream of content that claims it can turn your life around and help you achieve everything you've wanted. I'll talk about my personal experience about why this promises fails to deliver?

    Self help by itself is not gonna help.
    Like you say it's about the experience and stepping outside your comfort zone!
    However, it's not really smart to make the same mistakes other people have already made!!!
    You can learn by your own trial and error, or you can save yourself time and energy Andrew learn from someone who has already done it.
    It's kinda like buying a map which leads you through a jungle. You still have to go through the jungle yourself, but now you know where to go. You can avoid snakes and quicksand.
    So in the end, I think it's the combination of getting the knowledge and taking imperfect uncomfortable actions!

    This is such a good video. As someone who fell into a deep deep depression mixed with paralyzing anxiety, the only thing that finally got me out was just going out and forcing myself to learn and try new things. Ever since I’ve realized I can accomplish things I set my mind to, I’ve felt better than ever and have gotten so much done. It’s a feeling you can’t experience without actually taking action, and it’s what a lot of self help “gurus” miss.

    Also, I wanna comment on your experience with How to Win Friends and Influence people
    Is it possible that reading the book gave you more confidence for speaking to people and interviewing them?
    That was the effect it had on me...
    Before, I didn't know what to say and that stopped me from starting conversations. After I read the book, I had more confidence in what I was gonna say and it helped me take the uncomfortable action to say the first hello to a stranger
    But again, it's about getting the knowledge and taking action!!
    There is NO WAY AROUND DOING THE HARD, SCARY, UNCOMFORTABLE things if you wanna change and improve 🔥

    Nice! I feel pretty similarly about self help stuff. It's not quite a scam, but it just feels like it's extremely limited in what it can actually help you do. What do you think is the place for those kinds of books/courses?

    • @robohumanist
      @robohumanist 2 года назад +1

      I absolutely LOVE self help, it saved and changed my life completely!
      (I had massive social anxiety, was depressed and googled "how to be happy?" when I was 13 -> now I am 22, I traveling the world, turning strangers into friends and LOVE my life)
      I feel like the potential of self help is unlimited! It's self-help for a reason! You are helping yourself. Not the content itself.
      Get the knowledge and apply it. APPLY IT! 🔥

    If you read about self help without taking the path the writer/presenter points out, you're not interested in self help. You just want to read about it.
    It's like I buy one to those car kits you have to put together yourself. It comes in the mail then I go online and complain that the car doesn't work.

    This is like going on Netflix and clicking on a random movie and thinking movies suck because you put zero effort into finding something you’re interested in

      Everybody should buy self help books!
      It's the kind of stuff they should teach in school in my opinion!!!
      However, once again, you cannot expect the book to do the work for you.
      Get the knowledge and use it. USE IT!

    While I do appreciate the idea that *just* reading books is a huge trap, it seems you are misrepresenting many so called self-help books?IMO they always/often stress the point that real action and real change is needed. (At least the ones Im reading is like this.) Its not about reading OR doing. Its about reading AND doing.

    • @inkbugdesign
      @inkbugdesign 2 года назад +2

      The problem is, the books also tell you that you'll only succeed if you learn and implement their "system". That's where they come between you and just going out there and doing the thing and learning from your mistakes. After all, which self help "guru" is going to say it as simply as this 3 minute video has? You'd never buy another book of theirs.

    This is the lamest take I've heard. Every one of those books tells you to take action. They teach you the tools to do so.

    • @shadysif6220
      @shadysif6220 Год назад +1

      They teach you to action, alright.
      Step
      1. Buy my book.
      Step
      2. Pay to come a cliche filled seminar
      Step
      3. Tell someone else to buy my book
      Step 4. Tell someone else to pay for a cliche filled seminar.
      Follow the exact pattern for all 30 books and seminars.
