- In 2014, Sony Pictures Animation almost made a Super Mario Brothers movie. The movie was the brainchild of Sony Pictures, specifically Avi Arad, trying to court Nintendo to partner on the film for over five years.
Through the negotiations, Sony also tried to get Nintendo to give them the movie rights to Super Smash Brothers and Pokemon. Although those potential adaptations fell away, Avi Arad was actually able to secure the Mario movie rights for Sony Pictures Animation.
But after hearing about the movie only one time by way of an email leak, nobody heard anything about the movie ever again.
Today, we'll dive into the potential reasons why that may be the case as we break down the development and cancellation of the unmade Sony Pictures' Super Mario Bros.

You say officially, but technically not
Playstation is only a single branch and is separate from the film division. So it would not have been a partnership with PlayStation at all.

Weird to think they had both Mario and Sonic in their hands at a time in a parallel universe we're getting their Mario, Sonic, and their spinoff movies on alternating years.
The moment you said Genndy Tartakovsky, I had to stop for a sec. The thought of a Tartakovsky directed Mario movie, considering his pedigree with stuff like Dexter's Lab, Samurai Jack, and what he was going to do with the Popeye movie... Oh, what could've been.

Yeah with Avi Arad heavily involved it’s probably a good thing this didn’t get made especially given that this was after he bastardized The Amazing Spider-Man movies and even if Genndy Tartakovsky would have directed it Arad would have most likely interfered with the project and ruin it.
Wasn’t Arad also involved with Into the Spider-Verse or the MCU Spider-Man films as well?

It would have been interesting if Genndy did direct the Mario Bros movie, but at least Sony decided to not let the movie continue due to their reputation in animated films at the time
I appreciate the determination, but if that had gotten made, we would have never gotten the current movie we have today. And I know critics weren't a fan of it, but as a life long Mario fan, I really, really loved it. I hope this new movie gets a sequel, and maybe they'll be interested in pursuing more movies in the future.
After seeing the movie, I'm positive Nintendo will want do more!

I wonder about this myself, but I also wonder how much of the plot was set in stone with there likely being such a short time between closing the deal and Nintendo shutting everything down
And now we have Nintendo and Sony pictures making a Zelda movie, ever since the Nintendo and Sony fiasco of 1991, never thought I'd ever see them partner up.
Wonder what it means for future collaboration.
I love Nintendo but they’ve always been the biggest pansies when it’s come down to leaks. They’re like that obnoxious teacher that cancels a party for the whole class because one student acted up. The smash bros thing still bugs me to this day, Sakurai won’t do another “subspace emissary” cinematic story because he got real pissy about people leaking cutscenes…after the game came out.
To be fair, things like the Subspace Emissary should've never been uploaded to yt in the first place by people who had first hand experience in it. The people who did that should've kept their pride eyes shut and waited till every region of the world got to play and experience the game first; THEN upload them after a few months once each region of the world has the game in their hands!

I'm glad this didn't go through. Just like how I'm glad their partnership with Sony during the SNES add-on days didn't go through. Otherwise, Sony would've tried to absorb Nintendo into Sony as a 1st party developer for them through a loop-hole they made through their contract; which was designed to be rejected. Creating the 'Habsburg Ultimatum' Effect!

Bruh I had no idea this was gonna happen under Sony’s watch! Well, I guess fortunately for Universal, nothing got accidentally leaked for the film we just now got.
Knew about that but Sony's Pokemon and Smash Bros is quite a shock! Weird no one wants to touch Earthbound/Mother that seems like it would be perfect for an animated movie. Especially part 2 or 3.
I never thought about Mother, but yeah. Mother would have the potential to be a great adaptation.

Sony was planned to make a CD-ROM for the Super Nintendo but that was never happening. And then the PlayStation from Sony themselves was born in 1995.
If sony didn't design their contract with Nintendo to be rejected that is. Creating the 'Habsburg Ultimatum' Effect. Because the SNES add-on was originally supposed to be Nintendo's to control; not sony's. So sony f***ed up right there and owes Nintendo an apology for trying to bamboozle them in the process!

Tbh, this had a lot of potential, like the mcu for Nintendo and the smaah Bros movie, which is like the Avengers movie, but since Illuminations mario movie is destroying the box office i guess mabye in the future we will get solo Nintendo character movies than we could possibly get the smash bros movie just done by Universal

Although I’m very happy with the movie we got, it would have been cool to see what a Tarkovsky Mario movie would have looked like. I think if he was with a better studio than illumination, the Mario movie could have been even more amazing.

Considering that Avi Arad ruined Spider-Man film franchise since Spider-Man 3 and the Amazing Spider-Man duology, I'm glad that the Sony's Mario adaptation never happened.

I wish sony would have made is a Super Mario Bros animated movie They would have been partners with playstation and nintendo together but instead They are being rival And Illumination decided to collaborate with Nintendo to create their version of The Super Mario Bros movie Illumination version That made billions to dollars and it was a hit at the box office That is the highest grossing film of 2023 It's a woke film It's the best film of the year that a lot people like that woke film.

Hemmas, I’m noticing quite a number of Avi Arad hate comments here. I know people are very picky about the Spider-Man films and the outcome of 3 and the Webb films, but I hope these Arad haters realize that Arad deserves credit for Marvel still even around today.
While Avi Arad does deserve a massive amount of credit for Marvel still existing today, I also think that there's nothing wrong with thinking he's a bad producer. I think both can totally be true :D
