Something I've noticed in the mario and luigi series... Whether it's easter eggs or other. Bowser tends to keep souvenirs of past adventures... So what if the Elite trio or Kamek was in a keepsake room and commented something like 'what if we could mix these together/use them ourselves'. Imagine goombas using shroobtech walkers. Koopas wielding Fawful-style blasters. Foes infused with energy copied from the dark/dream stone. Spells/magic items from Cackletta. Bowser and Jr using some combination of all the Alpha dreams stuff. Hell, Bowser himself using armor to show that he's not messing around anymore.
I hope they bring it back. It would help satiate the lack of mario rpgs. Considering that they've given up on the rpg angle in paper mario. It's a shame Nintendo just sits on great games they made in their past.
@@madnessarcade7447 Retro I think are insanely busy planning for Metroid prime 4 and a new Donkey Kong game for the last 7-10 years. Camelot or Intelligent Designs are the way to go imo
I think alphadream themselves and their unique style of writing and design is part of what made the series so beloved in the first place, so I'm not sure if i'd even like seeing a mario and luigi game made by a different studio at nintendo... Unlike a fan work, it makes me worry they'd make it too sanitized, like honestly even alphadream's own remakes turned out. But time will tell! Even if the series won't return in the same way as we knew it, I'm sure the fans will pick up where Alphadream left off. I know there's already a mario and luigi fangame in development that looks promising, and there are some spiritual successors in the making too! (cough cough i'm making one as well cough cough)
It's funny how you mentioned that AlphaDream made sure the series stayed consistent and up to the same quality standard, because I personally did not get that vibe at all from Paper Jam. The interview and "justification" for why that game was so sterile felt so out of character for AlphaDream to the point where I absolutely believe there was more to the story than we know. I don't believe AlphaDream would have ever willingly chosen in their own completely free reign to make a game with only generic Toads and a light emphasis on story, especially one that crossed over with another beloved Mario RPG series equally beloved for its unique characters. Their interviews for the rest of the series demonstrate a deep love for the continuity they've carefully crafted with their own original characters interwoven into the Mario world. To not even use ones that would have fit perfectly in a fully Bowser-centric conflict (like the Elite Trio, last seen literally onscreen with Bowser at the end of Dream Team), yet be able to somehow find a place for them in a remake of a game before their debut, suggests SOMETHING was different with Paper Jam on a higher level. I agree with everything else, but for all intents and purposes Paper Jam feels like a game fully made by 2010s Nintendo at the height of their sterility craze, not AlphaDream. It sticks out like a sore thumb and honestly complicates discussions of the series because of how this series is 100% consistent except for that one game. Even the remakes add things tying them into other entries. Cameos, call-forwards, etc. in the side modes. The only thing "Mario & Luigi" about Paper Jam is the sprite style, battle system and Starlow is here I guess. Sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise sanitized mess. I think maybe if they had developed the Superstar Saga remake in place of Paper Jam (with its budget, so fully 3D imaginings of Superstar Saga's environments), then moved on to making a Switch entry with Nintendo's full support and guidance (technical, not creative), they would still exist today. Anyways, I always thought the side mode for a PIT remake should be Fawful-centric. We got two Koopa Troop focused side modes already, Fawful is a fan favorite, and he does have a minor role in Partners in Time, there's definitely a lot they could expand on about what he was up to then. How did he meet Midbus? How did he make his Fawfulcopters? (Surely he didn't copy the design from aliens that were wreaking havoc in the past, which he definitely had no access to, right?)
Kind if unrelated, but I wonder if the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon rescue team remake on switch was originally going to be a 3ds game, but was moved due to Nintendo scrapping all further 3ds plans.
I REALLY hope we get some Mario and Luigi clone games like how there’s a few Paper Mario clone games. It would be fun if we got something that built on what Alpha Dream set up. Do you think you’d ever make a video about how a Zelda or some other Nintendo ip could work as an rpg? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that. I have a few ideas on what a Zelda rpg would look like.
Yeah. It’s weird how there’s not a lot of games that use that formula. You’d think we’d have more. I apologize in advanced for the LONG response. I just had A LOT too say about how a Zelda rpg could play out: Once I was watching a Let’s Play of these two Zelda rpg maker games that were made by UndyingNephalim/IceCreamMan back in the day (he’s the creator of Hyrule Conquest/Total War, which was this total conversion mod for Medieval 2 Total War that used Zelda as a base to tell his own story. It uses elements from all three timelines and was pretty interesting. The story had some rough edges and various things that would ONLY make sense if you know about weird/esoteric symbolism. He later ditched Medieval 2 and moved to 0ad’s engine because it was so much easier to work with. Unfortunately, at one point the guy rebooted the continuity he made and eventually just outright scrapped the game because he was completely burnt out on Zelda since he’s been at it for around a decade. He also saw MASSIVE success with his Star Fox Event Horizon fan game which is this reimagining of the 64 continuity that uses characters and ideas from all three reboots/timelines. The madman even got in contact with Krystal and Bill/Wolf’s original voice actors and they’re doing voice work for his game. It’s a mod for Freespace Open which is this open source so it’s 100% free. There’s some engine limitations making the thing janky and the ability to hop in and out of vehicles like Assault sadly can’t happen. Thankfully the core gameplay is so good those are only minor issues. Absolutely check his work out) and I was thinking about ways the gameplay could’ve been improved and made more true to Zelda. The thing is called The Fallen Sage and had this bad guy that was basically bootleg genderbent Sauron who controlled the Goma that were this bug hive mind in his game. There was also some guy who usurped the kingdom. The story had some interesting ideas but the execution wasn’t super good. He made up some lore for his setting and some of it was pretty weird. This was made before Skyward Sword was a thing so it took a lot of it’s cues from Majora’s Mask, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess (I really like how fanfictions can serve as a time capsule because they reflect the lore of the time and how people perceived the series. Even if they’re trash it’s still interesting to see what people come up with to expand upon areas we know nearly nothing about). I’ll return now to talking about how a Zelda rpg could play out. In the thing it was like most jrpgs where you had an over world map with random encounters and normal areas like towns, dungeons, and levels. I was thinking that you’d keep the world map but make it work like Zelda 2 where if you go off the path monster silhouettes will appear and if they touch you it triggers combat. That way they wouldn’t feel so random and you’d have a way to avoid them. The combat was the classic turn based system where you have multiple party members who have their own strengths and weaknesses. Since it lacked timed attacks you’d just select through a menu and they relied on rng. This would be fixed to reflect the Mario rpgs where you have timed hits and for their specials they’d probably be copies of the special moves in Hyrule Warriors for the appropriate characters. You’d have classic Zelda items you can buy from shops and can use them in combat on certain enemies that have a specific weakness. The normal levels sadly lacked a lot of the interactive events from Zelda games like cutting grass, bombing walls, solving puzzles (the puzzles he did add were super basic), using items, and other things. Having these sections play like top down Zelda with combat being turn based would be a great way to fix this. He also had certain characters only be able to use very specific gear which is perfectly fine. Mario rpg did that and it’s a staple of the genre so it should stay. A lot of the enemies, items, and other things were clearly assets taken from other things with not a whole lot being ripped from Zelda. If you were too address these various issues I think you’d have a winning formula. Sadly, this kind of a game doesn’t exist. This one guy CodemanCZ is currently remaking those game using classic Zelda gameplay with a high level of interactivity for the normal levels (I can understand why a lot of people aren’t fans of the new Paper Mario’s. But, one thing I think we can all agree they excelled at is making the world super interactive and requiring you to solve puzzles in the environment. That’s one thing they NEED to keep in a potential sequel. Combine TTYD’s combat with the newer game’s over worlds and you’d have something truly great), but the combat is more like Xcom. It sounds interesting, but I would’ve preferred it to play more like the Mario rpgs.
It's really weird there hasn't been more of them made already, honestly. It might be due to series like paper mario being a bit easier to clone, given it's style allowing for less animation and fewer character sprites in general, in comparison to all the amazing pixel art alphadream pumped out each game? Who knows.
I definitely believe in the return of the series as i 100% agree with what you said. Just cuz the Studio filed for bankruptcy doesnt mean we cant get any more New mario & luigi games. Look at dk for instances. Rare has been bought by Microsoft which led to the closing of the Studio. Dk Was in a Limbo for a while yeah but what happened to the series? It came back. How? With a new Studio taking the series under its wing. I mean yeah the Remakes sold poorly but the games itself Overall Sold decently enough to bring sequels. Plus with smrpg and ttyd getting a remake why shouldnt mario & luigi get the same treatment? Bring a collection to the next console (i highly doubt were getting it for the Switch so yeah next console it is) and reintroduce the series to a newer and younger Audience. 50-60 bucks would be a fair price in this case since you get *5 whole games* of the series. Ofc put the Remakes in the collection not the og ones even though theyre not bad but i think younger Audience would be more appealed to the remakes cuz of its good graphics and all that stuff you know what i wanna get at. Or you just remake partners in time and maybe add some stuff onto it, make some good qol changes and boom you got yourself a better Version of the game since the og Wasnt bad but also not the yellow from the egg but it Was a good m&l nonetheless. So yeah heres hope and confidence that the series will eventually wake up From its long slumber 🚬🗿🤞
