Three years ago I bought both Kyle's battery and controller upgrades. Prior to that I was going to sell the Rover so to get a faster bike, with a lot more torque. But after installing Kyle's upgrades what says it all: I decided to keep the bike and I still have it. Why? Because my top speed on the flat lands the Rover went from throttle-only 20 mph max (on the flat lands with the wind at my back) to throttle-only 30+ mph. And more importantly, going up the somewhat steep hill to my house atop Nob Hill (San Francisco) I can now use throttle-only, moving from a full stop at the bottom of the hill to cruising the whole way at 15 mph. And if I set #3 on peddle assist with minimal peddling I can got the entire way at 15 mph. That significant improvement in torque is what I was looking for. Bottom line: thanks to Kyle's power upgrades my Rad Rover feels and functions like I'm a commander of an M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank. Bonus Tip: Guys, if you increase the power of your bike, both in speed and torque, if your bike has simple mechanical disk brakes, I highly recommend you or a bike mechanic install a set of hydraulic brakes. (As our good fortune would have it, Area 13 has a video on the how-to of installing hybrid hydraulic brakes, and they sell sets too.) Remember, the bikes that have mechanical disk brakes were designed around the slower speeds of these bikes from the factory. When you make the bike 20 to 30 percent faster, you need a rock solid set of hydraulic brakes. They are a little spendy ($150 to $200, depending on what set you want, complete hydraulics, or hybrid), but what I always ask myself, what is my safety worth. It sure as heck is worth more than $200.
I’m subscribed now! I’ve been using my old Razor Eco for years - upgraded it to brushless motors with two extra kid seats and a 30ah battery bank @36v 350w. But recently I bought a Prado S to get better handling and torque from the wheels and the 750w 48v brushless motor. But I’ll definitely be upgrading the battery ASAP on it
My question is this: how do we know if the controller can handle the extra voltage from 48 V to 52 V, if we want to upgrade the battery like you did in this video?
@@theyutube6549 I got it and yes it can Mines 2020 radrover I got it all, this battery,750 motor, controller and lcd. Bike goes 32 mph. Throttle only. I'm 270
It will say in the controller what range volts you can use. Usually a controller will work a few volts higher cos when batteries are fully charged the volts are higher.
A 48 volt battery 14 series. Fully charged is 58.6 volt. A 48 volt 13 series battery fully charged is 54.3 volt. 48-volt ebike controller can handle upto 75 volt. If a battery is not charging any higher you need upgrade your BMS or remove it completely. And make sure the battery charger can charge upto the highest voltage the battery needs.. This upgrade will cost nothing or next to nothing. You certainly don't need to upgrade batteries. This channel will not tell you that. They won't make money.
Very informative! I have a 4 + year old Rad Mini I never want to sell! Lot of modifications. Even seat is hi end and have great shock adsorber. 780 mile on her. The charger connector broke, so I hot glue it in place. Also case split so i also put Loctite on screws and silicone it tight. However it's getting dendrites and lower range. Do U sell a less expensive battery for my rear rack or one that fits hanging on center frame ?
I learn more and more each time I watch one of your videos. Keep up the great work and we hope you're feeling better. Much love and 'Big Ups' from a fellow NDS(Neurological Disorder Survivor).
I have to hand it to Bolton my crankcase strippout big bummer because just bought the bike. And waited forever for delivery but it's as awesome as as they say Kyle built just right and thank you but long story short (not) but yhought that Bolton had shipped it to the storage unit thy do 't receive packages so I think omg it going to be shipped back to Cali but dint. Know if Jessicca caught it or my emails caught eye either way it was shipped to my apt problem solved
I am probably typical as a new Ebike shopper, and I really appreciate your ability to transfer your knowledge! Bravo. Shopping for the bike for me, and the bike for my lovely partner. She is concerned with the color.....so it’s on me to know real info. I’m a big fellow, she is a little woman. Good to learn new things.
All he did was rip the internals of the stock battery and stuff it into a triangle frame bag, Or got a new battery that's not a hard case and stuffed it in. Not really hard to do.
Wish you were in Australia I’ve had to replace my battery because I dropped my old one but nobody in Perth seems to know how to repair it. I suppose we will catch up eventually 😂
You certainly don't need to replace battery WTF You can't damage batteries by dropping them. Especially if they are inside a case. But you can break connections and BMS board by dropping it. Replacing BMS board is normal wear and tear. They often stop working This is very common knowledge. You don't need experience it's very very easy and basic to replace. if don't know how to fix or replace basic parts. No reason having one It will cost you hundreds. If you buy a new battery and when the BMS brakes. What are you going to do buy another battery lol 😂 At the moment I don't even have a BMS board in my battery pack
I did the upgrade kit, new 750 w motor and 52 w 20ah battery. The issues I had were with connectors from battery to the controller and I opted to make my own connector. The real tricky part that you didn't mention Kyle was that to remove the new motor, you need to either go with a special tool that I think you carry but is difficult to locate on your website or use an alternate freewheel. I wanted a different gear ratio anyway so went with the freewheel. That is where I discovered that Bafang discourages this by using security torx screws and you need a really good torx bit to remove those little rascals! I should have it completed in a couple of days after one more part arrives. I do want to thank Bolton for everything in putting together a great upgrade kit!
To remove the motor you just pull the wheel out... Or you have to pull the motor out of the wheel, at which point you would have to re-spoke it in a new wheel. Lord help you if you started disassembling the motor LOL.
I know this is 3+ yrs old but have a question: if a bike is 48v & you install this 52v style battery will the extra 4v damage the ebike electronics. Please respond if you ever see this.... It would be a Hugh help to me. Thanks for producing this video.
You did a very well job explaining my friend. There is still a big gap in information that people want on modifying your bike. Lots of videos sometimes leave you more confused and even more unsure of disassembling your $1500 investment
Mike Karp Lol, well it’s kinda the closest primary shape, as it were. I’m still on the lookout for the rare parcel log ram...um, ok; nice autocorrect. “Parallelogram”
great video....new to ebikes.....Had motorcycles for along time and now have interest in an bike.....I am researching building the bike. Watching and listening to you gives me confidence....You are very articulate and I look forward to the education...Thank you
Hey Kyle...I plan to ride my RadWagon 4 across Florida in order to explore as much of the Florida bike trails as I can. Your extended range battery will really help me on that planned trip. Thanks!
Velcro bag lunch looks like Garbo in my opinion. Would like to see sharper looking upgrades that don''t turn the bike into a used bandaid. You're great at what you do though 🍻
I agree, it's not too hard to make a custom cradle and custom hard shell triangle battery case, and would look so much better but also be upto10x better at being waterproof and damage resistant. I get the appeal of the bag batteries but they are for generic conversion kits IMO, if you are making a product for something so met a like the Rad then more effort in making it custom for that bike would make u sell alot more, as right now all u are selling is a triangle battery + bag + harness options, this can all be had from ebay easily, although personally if I was to buy such a thing then I would defo get it from yourself over ebay as u r an IRL trusted seller imo.
I agree with what you said but no one is really gonna look cool riding an electric bike, ive just accepted it but the sheer convenience and gas savings is why i ride one, not kidding i traded in my motorcycle for one of these bikes for transport
I am receiving my rad city 5 e bike and i would upgrade the battery but will wait for hard shell. I invested $2100 to get the best why not wait for proper casing in the future !!! FLY LIKE AN EAGLE IN TO THE FUTURE!!!
Great job explaining the little and big things about EBikes. Batteries, brakes all the in's n 'out's of all of the above as well. Not just a short explanation a nice detailed description down to the littlest details.. One of my favorite EBike Peeps!!!
I have a trike being delivered tomorrow, but I could not get a second battery as they were sold out. I hope I can get a few of these after market batteries to work. Much appreciate your video & link. Thanks.
I live in rural utah. I am low vision but not incapable. My service animal and myself needs more freedom. I like your aproach to ebike advocacy and education. Right on man.
I have just started with electric bikes still into electric skateboard's. My first attempt is a 250 watt skate motor with friction drive on a Giant road bike. Working quite well top. Speed on flat 26 kilometres per hour. Just over our legal limit of 25. Did get 30 on slight slope. Made up an 8 series 2 parallel pack..
Kyle, I am new to e bikes and have been watching you posts and learning a lot. Thanks for the education and please continue with everything you do for us. I will be contacting you in the very near future.
You inspired me to make a switchable connector for my soon to be 2 battery Ebike. Currently I only have a single 20ah 48v battery on a seat mounted newspaper carrier in a bag that came with a front tire 1000 watt hub motor kit and controller.
Using your easy to follow along upgrades, You've made my bike more sleeker faster mysterious than anybody else's bike out there. I have more versatility. I don't know what universe you came from but area 13 is a place you need to escape lol. Have a good one your friend Tim keep the videos coming
Great video. I was wondering if I could run two batteries at once and you just answered it. Can wait till you have those conversions parts in stock so i can do this upgrade.
thanks for posting it! videos like that helped me to make my 2nd battery (10s10p with used 18650 laptop recycled batteries) in the rear rack and keep the original one. your solution are better and maybe someday I swap the battery places. but it works and the range almost tripled. connection change is manual using xt60. btw, never buy proprietary stuff
I am 57 y/o and a bypass patient and have had both rotators repaired and would really like to get back into riding. I find your videos informative and not redundant. But with so many options available and on a limited budget your channel is a great relief. Keep up the great work and hope to be in contact soon for an upgrade.
I recently ordered the Blackbird from you, you are a cool guy and I want to support your Business. I own Camino Power Tool and will be using your bike to commute to work. So excited, Thank You!
This seems to be one of most approachable and practical Ebike upgrades that I have seen on RUclips. I have Currie 24V bike.... Missing missing Lead Acid batteries. That's a good thing! Looking to do something similar using a new Lithium Ion for 28 volts... Basically keeping this obsolete E-Bike Stock as far as controller, and motor is concerned. Any existing batteries out there. Batter Bag Mount or using the downtube batter box suitable for a mounting point on the frame.
Omg thank you so much for this! I am looking into ebike delivery and have a Radmission with not the grandest of battery specs… This would certainly help! Definitely looking for a solution that won’t necessarily cost my first month of earnings…
Great video..could you explain installing an aftermarket battery..like what are the connectors..and can you charge the battery out of the bike..by interchanging the connectors thanks
I have subscribed to your channel, greetings from southeast Quebec, in Canada. Yesterday my first bicycle arrived. A modest GOTRAX Shift S1 Foldable Electric Bike, 16 ''; Fat Wheels, 36V 7.8Ah and, I have already done some tests here, there. I am happy with it to be honest. But I am aware that sooner or later I will have to improve/upgrade the capacity of the battery and/or buy conversion kit for my other bikes. Your video that I just watched is pedagogical and allows me to see the options I could take in the future. Thanks.
I've ordered my very first e-bike, a DJ Fat Bike that looks similar to the Rad Power Rover. I'm already looking for upgrades. This video is really exciting, as I'm hoping to do some riding on some very long trails that will probably call for extended run time. This video presents some very attractive options. I'm also trying to figure out what kind of rack will fit on the bike, too, so that I can carry around a spare battery and some geocaching gear. Anyhow, thanks for putting together this really great, informative video.
Great info waiting for my wife’s 60th birthday present to arrive. Hope the Brexit situation doesn’t delay too long. Love the great content G from the East Riding of yorkshire. UK
Very informative videos. I am only learning about Erikes cause I’d like to get one and this channel is the most honest reviewing bikes and parts. Keep it going!
I think you already answered my question. I have a tadpole trike with a 20ah battery mounted on a rack over the rear wheel. I was wondering if it would be possible to mount two 10ah batteries on either side of the seat to improve my cog. Your two battery y connector sounds like a good solution. I think I'll wait out the covid supply issues before shopping for new batteries.
Just did a 48v 1000w battery and motor on my bike and is a little scary once it gets up around 35 and will do it up hill too, more than enough power but can't wait to see the range. Besides hills that's the biggest problem , getting home before the battery goes.
This question is from another video you did about a rad e-bike that had a 750 watt motor and when you took it apart it looked exactly like the 500 watt farang motor. How do you figure this out before you buy a bike that's listed as a 750 watt. PS I really enjoyed this video. I have seen a system that uses the rack for an extra battery. The battery slides in below the top of the rack so you can still utilize the back rack to carry things.
I haven't even got an ebike yet...Fantastic tutorials. Where else can one go to find out about all the options, pros and cons that are available now. Thanks again..hilly country hmmm.
I have a older ebike I like a lot that is full suspension. I would love to up grade this bike. The bike has a 24v 8a frog battery and 300 watt brushless hub motor. Pedal assist still doesn't work even through I replaced the PAS sensor cadence. I would love to up grade this bike if you could help. I watch your videos and know you are one of the most knowledgeable guys in your field.
Can you do a video on adding battery on RadRunner. Maybe with option of keeping the stock and add a 2nd when needed. Maybe mounting it on the water bottle cage.
I recently had several vertebrae fused together, I’m still in rehab. But all in all I’m doing great. I’m looking to get my 1st electric bike. I’ve been watching you videos , thank you. They’ve been extremely helpful. I’ve been looking at several brands . Those with easy excess. As I’m having nerve issues. I’d like to know if you have any suggestions. I’ve looked into Yamee ,Lectric and rad fat bear. I’m looking at the “step thru”. I believe that design would be the best fit for me. I’m only looking to ride a few miles a day. I also want to get a cart for my dog to be with me.
Thanks for the video. I am going to be buying your step thru fat tire folding bike. I stupidly bought a Lectric bike that arrived with a defective motor. Returned that bike.
Kyle, I really like your videos, because you are always straight forward and honest. In my opinion RAD e-bikes are overestimated, overpriced and service is bad to very bad. Many customers experience breakdowns and then have to wait for months for replacement parts. Service = below zero. As a customer at the first look it seems that RAD e-bikes are reasonable, but there are no options for motors, batteries, disc brakes and other parts. To have upgrades it costs a lot extra, then it is still a RAD bike, not a great and famous brand and not reasonable anymore. The Radwagon 4 has tires and tubes 22x3" that only RAD has. So, there is only 1 brand/type/model of tire and tube fitting. This monopoly mentality is extremely bad and just not realistic. If new tires and tubes are needed, they are probably out of stock. When touring around, I want to buy replacement tires and tubes everywhere. I swear on Schwalbe Marathon Plus, but there is no Marathon Plus 22x3". As already mentioned, other brands have also no tires and tubes 22x3". RAD should have kept the 2018 Radwagon with 26" wheels besides "The 4", so customers could choose. Famous great brands like Yuba, Surly, Mongoose go also with 26" wheels with a big selection of tires and tubes in the market. E-bikes like yours are preferred. You offer options and good service. You want to do great work for customer - with no tricks and lies. RAD is mainly all about quantity and not about quality, not about service and not about satisfied customers.
New to the ebike family, but your videos are awesome. Haven't yet upgraded but I'm sure it will happen. Looking at the 35a controller. Ty for your help.

Definitely do more on "adding" batteries and dual battery setups. Until we get graphene batteries, adding capacity is the the option we need.
Also, considering our planetary shitstorm, all brands need to lower prices far more dramatically. The affordability still doesn't apply to the vast majority.

Did you find out?
@@theyutube6549 I got it and yes it can
Mines 2020 radrover
I got it all,this battery,750 motor,controller and lcd.
Bike goes 32 mph. Throttle only.
I'm 270
It will say in the controller what range volts you can use. Usually a controller will work a few volts higher cos when batteries are fully charged the volts are higher.
@@cahokia33 can I get the 52v battery and use the stock controller?
A 48 volt battery 14 series.
Fully charged is 58.6 volt.
A 48 volt 13 series battery fully charged is 54.3 volt.
48-volt ebike controller can handle upto 75 volt.
If a battery is not charging any higher you need upgrade your BMS or remove it completely.
And make sure the battery charger can charge upto the highest voltage the battery needs..
This upgrade will cost nothing or next to nothing.
You certainly don't need to upgrade batteries.
This channel will not tell you that.
They won't make money.
I’m am going to try and put a 52v 20AH battery on lectric xp. Should get about 33-35mph and close to 30 miles throttle only
Your easy to follow directions are refreshing!!!!
Thanks! That was good info!
Same deal with me ... 2017 rad mini
Same with me any options available for an off market replacement battery?
I learn more and more each time I watch one of your videos. Keep up the great work and we hope you're feeling better. Much love and 'Big Ups' from a fellow NDS(Neurological Disorder Survivor).
BTW-this is the video which made me ask about applying this battery to the Cheetah.
Honestly you do a good job on these videos. I do appreciate the content.
Do you sell this as a complete kit with the battery, battery bag and connector for my Bolton 2020? What is the total price? Thank you.
Yep, definitely interested in the cost of a plug n play package!
A complete kit would be GREAT!!! I would definitely be interested in buying a complete kit!!! Thanks Kyle!!!! Let us know!!
All he did was rip the internals of the stock battery and stuff it into a triangle frame bag, Or got a new battery that's not a hard case and stuffed it in. Not really hard to do.
I like the way Area 13 set up this VERY GOOD DIY presentation.informative, lets the listener follow easly. Well done.
Wish you were in Australia
I’ve had to replace my battery because I dropped my old one but nobody in Perth seems to know how to repair it.
I suppose we will catch up eventually 😂
You certainly don't need to replace battery WTF
You can't damage batteries by dropping them.
Especially if they are inside a case.
But you can break connections and BMS board by dropping it.
Replacing BMS board is normal wear and tear.
They often stop working
This is very common knowledge.
You don't need experience it's very very easy and basic to replace.
if don't know how to fix or replace basic parts.
No reason having one
It will cost you hundreds.
If you buy a new battery and when the BMS brakes. What are you going to do buy another battery lol 😂
At the moment I don't even have a BMS board in my battery pack
Learn about your battery and fix it yourself not to hard to do my bet broken connection with it .save some cash lots of information on RUclips
Appreciate all of the solid info, keep up the good work.
I know this is 3+ yrs old but have a question: if a bike is 48v & you install this 52v style battery will the extra 4v damage the ebike electronics. Please respond if you ever see this.... It would be a Hugh help to me. Thanks for producing this video.
Depends on the bike. Most will handle that small of a change, but I've seen a few here and there that will fry.
Make one for the Lectric XP and you will sell a ton! I'll buy one for sure!
Patiently waiting . . .
My ebike is arriving today and now I have some great knowledge to option my speed & range . . . Thanks Bolton Ebikes !
Hope you enjoy it!
Great learning experience! Even an idiot like me can reasonably upgrade his ebike battery.
Ideots don't ride E-Bike's
@@flatsix100 Just idiots.
You did a very well job explaining my friend. There is still a big gap in information that people want on modifying your bike. Lots of videos sometimes leave you more confused and even more unsure of disassembling your $1500 investment
Ah! My first 5-sided triangle!
Mike Karp Lol, well it’s kinda the closest primary shape, as it were. I’m still on the lookout for the rare parcel log ram...um, ok; nice autocorrect.
“Parallelogram”
Pentangle?
great video....new to ebikes.....Had motorcycles for along time and now have interest in an bike.....I am researching building the bike. Watching and listening to you gives me confidence....You are very articulate and I look forward to the education...Thank you
Tnx, exactly what I was looking for !
The title does say “easiest way”. The easiest aren’t always the best looking.
Those triangle bags are handy
Great job explaining the little and big things about EBikes. Batteries, brakes all the in's n 'out's of all of the above as well. Not just a short explanation a nice detailed description down to the littlest details.. One of my favorite EBike Peeps!!!
I just bought a Rad Rover 6 Plus step through and I'm enjoying your video's. I noticed your expensive locks on the garage door, simple but effective.
Description is very concise and I certainly appreciate your detailed explanation of volts, amp hours and watts.
Any modular airplane travel batteries out there besides Grin's discontinued LiGo batteries?
Great content, I just bought my first E bike at age 69 and love. Good cardio workout. I bought the Kona Kahuna, hope it is a good one. Thanks again
Thank you Kyle for your knowledge and contributions to the ebike community...I recently ordered a bafang freewheel removal tool from you.
Kyle, I am new to e bikes and have been watching you posts and learning a lot. Thanks for the education and please continue with everything you do for us. I will be contacting you in the very near future.
Hey ! Just got my first e bike! Loving it!
All right good job step one completed now you must start upgrading immediately
got my first e bike off amazon and the adaptor idea is great to be able to use a different spare battery
going on my fifth ebuild running a 48v battery on a 36v motor 500 watts so far it works super fast,
we will see if it burns it up or not.
Did it burn up
I sure would like to see some of your items back in stock, especially the controller and cables! Thanks!
You inspired me to make a switchable connector for my soon to be 2 battery Ebike. Currently I only have a single 20ah 48v battery on a seat mounted newspaper carrier in a bag that came with a front tire 1000 watt hub motor kit and controller.
Just got my Ecotric 26” Mountain Beach e-bike two days ago and have found your channel to be a great resource!
I have the same bike and the battery life is my only real complaint. Have you successfully swapped out the battery on yours?
Using your easy to follow along upgrades, You've made my bike more sleeker faster mysterious than anybody else's bike out there. I have more versatility. I don't know what universe you came from but area 13 is a place you need to escape lol. Have a good one your friend Tim keep the videos coming
I appreciate the way you go through the details at a slow pace. Keep these coming fir the Rad City.
Thank you for the tip on how to use a generic battery on a RAD POWER bike. I just ordered a rad runner plus bike and find this info most useful.
Great video. I was wondering if I could run two batteries at once and you just answered it. Can wait till you have those conversions parts in stock so i can do this upgrade.
I am new to e-bikes and have a rad rover , this video was great. I’m learning so much. Thanks for making them.
thanks for posting it!
videos like that helped me to make my 2nd battery (10s10p with used 18650 laptop recycled batteries) in the rear rack and keep the original one. your solution are better and maybe someday I swap the battery places. but it works and the range almost tripled. connection change is manual using xt60.
btw, never buy proprietary stuff
Great INFO - i'm in the process of upgrading my RADRUNNER 2020 both with controller and battery mounting the new 52 might be a challenge
I am impressed by your videos! Was going to get a RR but am now seriously considering the Bolton Blackbird!
Thanks.
Good stuff. Excellent info I ask that you might mention warranty's and how an owner ollows up if there is a problem!
Watching this because I just ordered a triangle 52v 30ah. Stoked
Win what ?
Great info waiting for my wife’s 60th birthday present to arrive. Hope the Brexit situation doesn’t delay too long. Love the great content
G from the East Riding of yorkshire. UK
Thank you for all your tips on ranging going farther on my bike it really helped a lot what about putting flat out in the tires though
Any such options exist for a rad mini 4? Love the idea of having two batteries, and a connector to switch between the two.
Hello could I run a 52v battery setup with a stock controller for a rad mission 1 ?
Got the new battery in last night, it’s a tight fit, but at least I know it won’t be going anywhere, excited to fly the beast latter today.
Very informative videos. I am only learning about Erikes cause I’d like to get one and this channel is the most honest reviewing bikes and parts. Keep it going!
Great information! My customers need this info! Need links to triangle battery, case and parallel connectors please. Thank you!
I am impressed by your knowledge and willingness to help people! A good reason to buy and ride a Bolton bike!
Excellent video. Only downside is the "bag" for the battery. You're a bright guy, come up with something that doesn't look so terrible.
I believe the term for the type of circuit for the parallel battery connector is a battery management system or battery balancing board.
Nice video but i wonder, can we put instead a slow discharge battery on an electric bike ?
Just did a 48v 1000w battery and motor on my bike and is a little scary once it gets up around 35 and will do it up hill too, more than enough power but can't wait to see the range. Besides hills that's the biggest problem , getting home before the battery goes.
You are the man I’ve been looking for. I need a ebike mechanics lesson.
Loving all the information you guys give. What do you feel is the best kind of helmets to wear when road riding??
I haven't even got an ebike yet...Fantastic tutorials. Where else can one go to find out about all the options, pros and cons that are available now. Thanks again..hilly country hmmm.
I have a older ebike I like a lot that is full suspension. I would love to up grade this bike. The bike has a 24v 8a frog battery and 300 watt brushless hub motor. Pedal assist still doesn't work even through I replaced the PAS sensor cadence. I would love to up grade this bike if you could help. I watch your videos and know you are one of the most knowledgeable guys in your field.
Could I fit a 48v or 52v to a Windgoo EBike that has a 36v battery currently?
I have the Discovery ebike bye Nakto . I was wondering if you could do an episode on this bike .how to hack/ derestrict it . And more helpfully tips.
