About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Glenn should collaborate with Brandon Small and Cartoon Network to make a cartoon short of Glenn dealing with texts from Dethklok.
+Helium Road ok! Get me his contact info
Helium Road YES this a millions times yes
Shuts ups ands go plays your stupids grandspas guitarss
THAT WOULD BE SO PERFECT
Approved man
When the line 6 bit appeared, even my neighbors were able to hear me laughing my ass off.
I woke my gf up from her nap.... It was just soooooooo good.
Saying that wannabe bassist is a computer programmer is an insult to all programmers.
Seriously. Anyone can click a button and "program" some midi notes. Doesn't make you a programmer the same as anyone plucking a guitar string or hitting a snare drum doesn't make them a guitarist or drummer.
I think "computer programmer" refered to programming basslines within the DAW
But i totally get whst you mean XD
I really enjoyed the back-and-forth with TJ. Made it a bit more fun.
Obviously Glenn is hilarious on his own but having someone to bounce his humour off of definitely gave it a leg-up over the other stupid text videos.
every time someone says "wood doesnt affect the tone" or "its a closed circuit" a musician dies
thats why so many gream musicians died this year
My God TJ!!! I didnt think people still lived like that!!! Reminds me of that crack house with the kid on Breaking Bad. Jeez man!
+Aaron Meloccaro man that's an insult to crack houses everywhere!
Aaron Meloccaro Jesse?
Yeah that one he went to and found the kid, then the parents were trying to open the ATM.
Crack houses don't have that much furniture.
That house is fucking filthy even by my standards.
I was going to clean my apartment once I get home from work, but after seeing TJ's shithole I think I'll just leave it to another day..
Do you think the "I Won't Open For Puddle Of Mud" guy just didn't think he could cut it in that situation ?
that room was messy though 😂
My mom would beat my ass if she saw that in my room
Drummers man 😂, and I’m a drummer so I can say this
Thats just a wild drummer in its natural habitat. Nature is beautiful isn't it?
It was? I dont think so
Whenever I feel like my house is a mess, I look at TJ's house, and my house suddenly looks better.
The only reason I would open for Puddle Of Mudd is to have a free, front row seat to the shit show that their doped up vocalist would cause.
That was soo good I'm sitting in the Ottawa airport waiting for the plane to get to the next gig laughing out loud and people are starting to stare at me. Priceless. Thanks for making the wait go faster
Fun thing about the whole tonewood debate... Les Paul (yes, the father of the modern electric guitar Les Paul) once said that from his early years of testing different designs, by far the best sound he got out of a railroad track that he strapped strings and a pickup on. And the only reason he gravitated towards wooden bodies was because someone told him something in the lines of: "Could you ever see a cowboy with a piece of railroad track strapped to his back?"
I kind of think that just fully stopped the whole tonewood debate for me. Even if I am a dirty bass player.
This came across my feed after watching your previous video where you made fun of Trapt. I loved the Puddle of Mudd guy's comment as I was once hired for a fill-in spot to open for Trapt as the bassist in the band didn't want to play the show. Not only did it get me more opportunities (and money for my time) I got to see some American Legends play their hit song multiple times. That guy has no idea on what he missed out on.
I don't know why bassists get so offended by your jokes and comments :p If you're a good bassist, you should just be thinking "LOL that's funny". A bad bassist would be offended only if they're guilty of those things.. Sooo.. Okay
It's usually the useless bassists who are offended because they don't like hearing the truth
I dunno, I'm a bad-to-mediocre bass player on my best day, and I still love the videos. I guess one has be a really special (needs) kind of twat on a high horse to get mad at Glenn's jokes.
I totally agree though, morons of all breeds hate hearing the truth. :D
I'm a Bass PLayer and I love these videos.
However, not ALL of us are idiots.
Some of us do possess some form of common sense.
But we are far and few between.
Keep rockin' dudes.
Glenn, I wanna thank you for recommending Distrokid! this has made making and releasing music much less stressful!
3:42 "my morals" hahaha and the hair xD
it's been a while since I've watched these. Glad it hasn't changed! Keep it coming Glenn.
Cheers from Seattle
Your guys are the Beavis and Butthead of metal! Love it!!! :)
I'm from Windsor and I recently moved to Montreal and when you said that bit in the video about Windsor and Montreal I had the weirdest Deja Vu where I felt like you were speaking directly to me for a moment and I had to leave the room. Freaked me out man. Freaked me out. Love the videos though. If you guys are from Windsor I probably know some of the people you've made fun of on here lmao
I have a question about guitar wood; I've never been a firm believer in the wood affecting the tone, but I always assumed it would play some part, but since the sound mainly relies on the strings, pickups, and hardware, it makes sense that the wood wouldn't make a huge difference in tone. So if I took the strings, pickups, and hardware from something like a Gibson Les Paul and put that into the body of a cheap First Act Guitar, would the tone between the two be similar? Also, does a Bolt On, Set Neck, or Neck Through make any difference?
You used a sample on that punch at the end; not cool Glenn, not cool...
So if anyone was confused by the argument about pickups, using wood does affect your sound. It's true that the pickups create frequencies based on vibrations from the strings, but they don't just pick up the strings… They also pick up vibrations from the guitar body, which also disrupt the pickup's magnetic field. A guitar body made of wood is going to vibrate differently from a guitar body made of something else or no guitar body at all. Therefore the resonant frequencies of the wood do matter to your tone as well as to your sustain.
I read 'tonewood' as 'bonehead'.. then realized there is some symbiosis there...
A 7$ mic is perfect for the dude. He will be cup it anyway.
4:51 I just had a Vietnam flashback to your review lol
I love how you guys acted out the emoji's. OMG, more Line 6 Spider questions?
Glenn, give me your Peavey 5150!! i'm under 18 and can't afford it.. i'll do anything ;)
Zimorog Band
Anything huh? Anything?!?!?!
Anything? Would you... get a job and save up money for it? :D
rk6314
Depends on what kind of "job" you're talkin there bud!
Ian Alderman LOL
Ian answered for me ;D
Love the way TJ is smiling as he slides out the katana!
I love how the texts at 3:27 are blue like the guy being the idiot thought he was in the right and took screenshots only to get made fun of for it. But fr, if you think a band sucks, open for them, if they really suck, people will pay more attention to you if you were so much "better."
7:03 - "Want to conquer the world, but you've only got $4 to your name. Oh, what to do?"
"Very easy - Bring back your empties."
Words of wisdom. 😁
When exactly did computer programming become a thing someone should be ashamed of doing? I am a programmer AND a bass player.
Yan Doroshenko
When the computer programmer says they are a bassist, but they don't play the instrument. Thats when they are to be ashamed of.
I think it's less that he's a programmer, and more that he considers himself a bassist when he doesn't actually play bass. It'd be the same if he said he was a pianist or a guitarist.
Think of it this way, if I was hired to play drums in a band and showed up for practice with an MPX, they might feel as though I'd bent the truth in order to get the gig. Nothing wrong with playing an MPX, I love mine, but to call myself a drummer would be dishonest.
And really, it was his insistence on calling himself a "metaphorical" bass player that truly makes the exchange funny.
I'd tell him to find a metaphorical band to play with and get someone who really knows their shit on a real instrument.
Not even a great term for it. Unless you're controlling synths in something like Super Collider making electronic music will be more like controlling an analog synth or writing actual notation. I'd still just use terms more related to "musician" than "programmer".
It has indeed has been FAR too long since you did one of these... great job man
Love having another guy in there reading the comments with you! Please keep it that way if possible! Love the channel! Cheers
+YellowCharizar d we just might do that
SpectreSoundStudios thank you!
Opening for Puddle of Mud is the perfect opportunity for the opening band to blow the headliner off the stage
Holy shit “we can give you a couple” while pulling out a sledgehammer is incredible! Hahahaha.
I died at 4:51
Best response ever
I have to admit it. I'm a teacher and once gave a student from a poor family an old 1x15 cab I wasn't using. Figured music was a way to keep his ass out of trouble.
shit, i would fucking LOVE to open for Puddle of Mudd! 😆🤘 A crowd's a crowd
TJ looks like a roughed up version of Metatron who rarely takes a shower.
I had a line 6 once. I picked it up over my head and threw it on the side walk. I sounded really good when it broke apart. I never had one once of regret.
ahahahaha!! when you read the comment with the line6 half stack, then had the hammer and the sword, that made my day glenn. thank you
I like stock plug-ins cause they're often overlooked but more powerful than they seem.
4:51 "uhh - We can think of a couple..."
Lmao. This had me dying.
I like how even though the colored boxes cover up the names, you can still see the names behind the boxes. Look at 10:00 with "Mike Ogle" and "Jess Gunnoe"
that line 6 spyder IV scene was absolutely amazing
The epicenter of the tonewood debate is whether or not wood can influence the harmonic overtone series of a vibrating string connected to it. Its easy to prove that YES it does...all you need is an amp, a tuning fork and headphones. When you hold a struck tuning fork against the body its vibration is transferred through the wood into the strings and into the pickups...which you can hear through headphones. Different kinds of wood will sound very different.
I've got a good "chirstian love" story. I used to go to a "christian" school in Chesapeake, Virginia U.S.A.. Basically what happened is I was bullied for 4 years (even though the superintendent and his brother contantly said that bullying was bad), this caused frequent panic attacks and memory lapses. One day I had said something about suicide during a fuge state and some scrubs played a game of telephone that went a bit like this: student: "mom some kid said something about death" parent to parent to parent: "some kidd gon kil ma baby" parent to police "kid gon kil m bb". The next day I am escorted by 3 police cars to a hospital with no tangible evidence (no weapons were found in my bag or locker) and only hear-say for like the third person on an unholy chain. From that hospital i am transferred into another hospital for 5 days with a following year of counseling. Basically, a lot of "christians" that I know hide behind God and don't follow up with what they say, nothing was done about the bullies by the school, and we found out later that they used my "incident" to help the school get funding for a security project.
+Kyle Smith sounds about right. The worst thing about Jesus is his fan club.
Kyle Smith I don't see anything relating to Christianity in that story
thats because this instance isn't about the religion itself, its about the Christians that I despise, I am a Christian but I wanted to give Glenn more ammo anger the "true believers" who don't believe Christians can't be bad people
What the fuck also im sorry for you being bullied
That hair flip with 'morals'! Nice format.
The only thing I don't like about your show is that your videos aren't long enough for me, I love your videos glen, keep it up.
That Puddle of Mudd show was probably Pay-to-Play anyway. If you refuse to do Pay-to-Play (as my band does), that's one thing. Refusing to play because you don't like their music? That's just stupid. What about local shows when you've never even heard of some of the bands? Do you just pack up and leave if the opening band sucks?
Just ploughed through the first 14 of these and love them! Great channel all around, thanks for your time and effort. Just found out you guys are in Ontario too which only makes this more awesome. Have a good one!
Haha, these vids always delivers! Rock on, mon!
Must say though that I actually have been using both heavy cupping and a mic in, for example, Styrofoam cups, cardboard tubes, and tin boxes on several occasions! But then again, I did this as a movie sound designer, not a music sound engineer/producer, and one of the voice-characters I used was for voices coming through a wall in hell ;-)
Having a singer doing the same is just regular hell.
Jeez, just the banter without the Social media idiocy is enough to thumbs up. I'd definitely chill with Glenn Fricker, now.
Downloads file from rapper... Trojan horse installing 100% completion
Bass player: "I am so smart, SMRT. I mean SAMRT."
Hi Glenn.
Been watching your channel for sometime now, especially like what said about bass players. After you explained about them we began to notice everything you said was true. Our bass player hadn't changed his strings since he bought the bass, he struggled to keep time and messed up anything but the simplest rhythms. Also when we asked,, he had previously tried to learn the guitar but gave up because it was too difficult. Finally he kept on missing practice, so we sacked him. Now we've got a bass sampler on the computer. It never misses practice, never cocks up a song, keeps perfect time and as we've gone from a four piece to three piece band, we get 25% extra money from gigs to share between us. Other bands have seen what we've done and they seem impressed, kudos Glenn, we gave you full credit when we told them, and thanks to you many more bands may be inspired to convert to a bass sampler.
The only way guitar material would affect tone is if it were so flexible that it would resonate visibly with the strings. It would be interesting to make a guitar where the nut and bridge are mounted to support with big springs to test the effects on sound.
How to wake up a sound engineer: excessive snare ring coming from mate's closed headphones
You mean putting on St Anger?
Line 6 seems to work aswell
just need to whisper the word
The last text almost had me in tears. How can someone be that dumb? Hahaha.
Please never stop these videos.
More on the way!
Love the new format thanks for the video
I was dying when you guys brought out the sledgehammer and the samurai sword in response to the Line 6 text 😂😂😂
There needs to be shirt that says “Spider help recommendations?” “We got a few”
And it shows just a hammer and katana breaking an amp.
Devin Townsend does use Line 6 amps... but only for practice, not for recording his albums or live. He has a video about that.
Any opportunity is a good opportunity reminds me of the documentary "why we do this" where the band car bomb ended up on the totally mismatched tour and basically had to end the tour early because it was an utter failure. I think they ended up 5 grand in debt. That is a situation where any opportunity to play a show isn't always a good opportunity. Now for an unknown local band to play with a national band that context is ALWAYS a good opportunity so you ain't wrong.
This is one of the most entertaining shows I've seen.
3:06 wow if he is so desperate to get waves plug ins he should download the pirated ones on torrent hhhh
I'm pretty sure Mastodon's lead guitarist frequently uses a guitar with no wood in its construction, and I can almost never tell the difference
Regarding that “opening band” bit, my former band back in the day opened for about 50 nationals. No, we never made it to the Big Leagues (try as we might), but we certainly met a butt-load of awesome human beings along the way! From that perspective, I’m a much richer person for that experience alone.
The line6 spider one had me in stitches XD
Loved this format of Stupid Texts
So my family was watching Animaniacs on Netflix, and I saw my personal favorite comeback to "Do you know who I am?":
"Why? Did you forget?"
dude, best epi yet. the ending punch made my day
Getting the chance to see a Wes Scanlin meltdown in real time? And for free, at that? Dude, that shit's priceless.
The way I see it:
If you aren't too good to open for Puddle of Mudd, then you DEFINITELY aren't too good to play on a Line 6.
You and Jared Dines should do a video. His 10 styles and you yelling and giving him shit. That would be awesome. 👍
jared dines sucks.
8:43 Glenn "Folks, don't let your kids grow up to be rappers, exhibit A". T.J. *"YEAH BOI-EEEE"!!!!* 😂😂😂😂
11:12 "15-year old acne farmers who sniff glue"
Going to have to save that one.
Went to photograph one of my mates bands on the weekend at a pub gig and was told the drummer quit a week last week. THE DRUMMER QUIT THE BAND A WEEK BEFORE A GIG....
I think that first guy was just messing with the dude about metaphors. Seemed like he was just having fun with him
The whole South Park Kids Read Stupid Musician Texts bit never gets old.
:)
Hahaa!!! That rapper sequence; I couldn't breathe! You guys rule! 🤘😂
I remember getting asked to join a "band" where the vocalist didn't have a job, had no aspirations to get a job, and just wanted to make money from music.... oh and one of the guys he wanted to play was a drug dealer so.
you need a animated series with tj I'd probably die of laughter
Best stupid musician text yet, keep it up!
I'd love to open for Puddle Of Mudd, if for no other reason than to have their "stage antics" make me look good.
I like how devin Townsend (a musician) somehow knows more about recording than Glenn (an audio engineer). How does a musician know more about recording than someone who does it for a living and went to school for it!?
Windsor is a cool town. Sometimes I look at it, when fishing on Belle Isle.
Considering what a mess Wes Scantlin is currently, I can definitely understand why you wouldn't want to work with Puddle of Mudd in any way.
Going off of the "all opportunities are good opportunities" thread: what do you think of having to "pay to play"? Should a band pursue a big gig knowing they'll have to sell a certain amount of tickets to play and selling those tickets isn't a guarantee given the band's current exposure and following? How much of a risk is too much?
I love what you're doing. Id love to have a studio as good as yours one day!
When I watch these and see some of the comments on the viewer comments series I feel like I'm one of the few that re read what they type before sending
Love TJ in the videos. Great job guys, too funny.
"That's kinda lame NOLAN, won't lie". I feel like that was half assedly redacted on purpose xD
How do you know when its a singer at the door?
A; He doesn't know when to come in and can't find the key.
charging your phone so close to your face on a flammable material is a REALLY bad idea!
That hair flick at 3:45... LMAO Glen! Hahaha
I made a mute that makes basses with piezo pickups sound like a synth bass (well like a 70s synth bass but better cause a real bass)
Hi Glen thanks for all the tips and you are awsome man love the show
I was hesitant at first about these videos due to your aggressive personality. I got over it and now I'm learning a lot on what to say and what not to say to engineers in the future. I'm a solo artist who plays Old School hardcore. I honestly hate bothering Engineers. I normally let them do what they want because I trust that they know their job a heck of a lot better than I do. it normally turns out better that way anyways. I feel that I'm very easy to work with and when they ask me how I think it sounds I give them my opinion and that is that.
