About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

Wow, that one guy sounds really headstrong. He really took you on.
Well, it's Glenn's fault. He didn't back off.
I know, he was wrong right?
This was way before its time lmao
Well he's the kinda guy who'd take on anyone
😆
Two things bassist wanna slap:
1. Their guitar
2. Glenn Fricker
Make that a T-shirt!
Steak_N_Bacon202 That's clever.
Don't be ashamed. Just be a person that knows what they are doing on a 4 stringed motherfucker so Glen is never talking about you when he goes on about stupid bass players.
Spending 3 hours on your Bass daily is the kind of thing Glenn would hold up as an example of being a good bassist. He hates bassists who can't be bothered to put effort into it.
3 things.. their "meat".
Agreed
I'm in London right now with my female cousins, and when they saw that first text ("there's nothing more attractive than a British accent"), they bitch slapped me and said "you're so gross!" thanks Glenn, that's the most attention I've gotten from a girl in weeks 😂
CAPTION: "Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you a new mic technique, The Deep Throater!"
LedgeTheDev genius !
That's what she said!?!?
ive been alone literally my entire life. i dont think im gonna resort to hitting on teachers trying to make a living
damn it's almost like... you aren't a sociopath
If no one buys bass strings, does that mean that what's in stock at your preferred music store is years old?
You shamed me into ordering new strings for my Steinberger, thanks for the intervention Glen.
"you ever hear of stupid musicians texts" that's the death sentence to bass players everywhere
No. Don't pick up The Game. Don't do that.
100% this. Girls can increasingly spot a guy who's read this a mile off, and we ain't impressed by it.
Nothing more rock and roll than trying to trick people to like you instead of recognizing girls as real persons and doing a real conection
If they’ve read it right- you won’t notice... that’s the point
Exactly! It’s pickup artist bullshit
Yeah, read Neil Strauss' later book, The Truth, about how pua basically wrecked his life and how he had to pick up the pieces and learn to be a regular loving human being again.
Even though I'm a bass player, I love all your episodes. Your content fills the void in my otherwise worthless lif.
it's 2017 Glenn
MrShnoobtastic just read his shirt
It's the current year!
The original title said it was 2016
It’s 2018 dumbass duh why don’t u play bass lik ever one else
South Park characters getting pissed about band practice, Alex Jones ranting about his daughter having mouth cancer, and other horrors.
The voices on this episode had me laughin my ass off...I totally fucking lost it at exibit one of bass player....I had a really good laugh thank you guys. Much love ♥
I don't think I have ever laughed so hard at a video as I did at that exhibit A part!
... And they he flipped Gene Simmons the bird.
Ossum!
Greetings from Ohio, I needed this laugh today thank you Glenn, love the channel.
Am I the only person who thought they were having a stroke when the one "bassists" text started sounding like someone from animal crossing was yelling at me?
Funniest thing I've heard the editing at the 8:12 mark with the speed gradually bringing the text narration up to a fever pitch. I had to turn it off at work I was about to lose my shit. Hilarious Glenn! Made my day.
Caption: "This technique works on both mics and Mikes."
These SMT videos never get old! Glad to see a new one!
Yep, definitely still 2016
Hey Glen, I love watching these videos cause they are so hilarious, please keep them coming.
The girl found a brand new way to cup the mic, and practice for her other job at the same time. What a very talented woman.
So cool to see my submission open up the show. Thanks Glenn!
Also is the hater the guy from the sex kittens?
+I Hate Myself And Want To DIE Not tellin'!
SpectreSoundStudios Thanks Glenn for the tip.
That's what I thought as well, seems to fit the time (before the first stupid musiciantexts).
Link, please?
i think i know who that is... I know his voice
I purposely started talk texting all the people that dont use punctuation, waited for a bunch of replies, then reply to all messages with an unpunctuated paragraph..hahaha try it sometime. This dude is fire love it.
The vocalist was practicing that technique backstage before the show.
Koraiy Anderson oh nooooooo
FUCKING HELL
ohhhhhhhhhh
Burn!!
Been gone from the channel for a little while. I like the new SMG intro screen!!! Cool lightning effect!
Date you or kill you?...probably both, and not necessarily in that order...
Glen these texts just get better and better, its amazing how many next big things are never heard of again, I wonder if there are actualy any that have made it through considering the hard hard work that goes into being a major artist, it does not happen to posers because they are too busy looking into every mirror they pass by
Can you autotune a bass? I dont know how to actually play it so maybe you could add the notes to my sucky skills?
Better yet, just don't play bass and we'll add in the rest.
Elijah Davallos just make sure you have the line 6 spider plugin
You joke, but there's a place near me that actually autotunes live bass, since it's easier than getting them to actually tune it.
Mind you, Autotune was originally created for processing in seismology. Now if seismic waves aren't bass, I don't know what is.
You can basically autotune anything that makes a sound, personally I think you'd be better off spending at least 15 minutes a day learning how to play a bass guitar, that will only cost you your time, whereas Antares Autotune will cost you time, money, electricity etc, I was terrible at playing guitar and bass when I first started, but my playing improved a lot just by spending time practicing and getting together with other musicians, there's no short-cut to getting good at playing a guitar or bass, you have to put in the hard yards, no way around it, Autotune is a band-aid fix and should not be relied on, yes I know Skrillex basses his whole style on it, personally I'd rather sound like myself rather than Skrillex or Cher.
I haven't been on your channel in a while, but I really like the new intro! Keep up the good work man!
With the girlfriend thing, on one side, respect is always warranted between all parties. On the other hand, this kind of goes along with the venue always trying to squeeze the bands for everything they can. It is not outrageous for the band to ask for a plus 1 for each member. With all the work that goes into acquiring gear, writing songs, finding other like minded musicians, practicing, transporting the gear to and from the show, and promoting the show 10 times more than the venue does, it's not out of line to say, "Hey, can we get a plus 1?" Most of the time it is coming out of the band's pocket anyways. It's not like they're asking for a bar tab.
nolasludge Yes! This was my feeling exactly. Bands should not let these business practices lead to animosity between musicians. An owner pressing the drummer's girlfriend for $ is a dick move. Every time a band not only puts up with this but HELPS ENFORCE it we all suffer.
Sadly the way these original gigs work is the promotor gets the room for free, but has to pay a door bitch and sound guy. in Australia, that's around $300.
the typically take 10 at the door and, after the first $50 from each of the 4 bands give back $7.00 a head.
So the promotion takes a risk on booking a band that only brings 2 people, however, they will often ask the band to make the difference
The venue has to pay a staff member to man the bar for at least 6 hours. These are on loaded rates as it's weekend evening work. Let's allow say $150 for a 6 hour shift
Add to that you have cost of goods sold (drinks), rent to the landlord, electricity, water, cleaners, security, accounting and payroll processing, payments on the loan for the venue fit out, and the crazy arsed insurances a venue now has to carry. so put that at say another $250 to cover the day.
Allowing for doubling the money on drink sales, that's $800 over the bar without tips before the venue breaks even and 30 people through the door for the promotor to break even.
Who makes money ? banks and insurance companies followed by state and federal tax and licensing authorities. They always get paid first.
If you've got a following g it's not a problem, and you pull a hundred people, you're getting $650 to play for 45-50 minutes.
But that requires work. you are competing with the internet, drugs, mobile phones, poker machines, and a depressed economy......along with another hundred or so hopefuls that are doing exactly the same thing.
Wanna make money from music ? It's so much cheaper to do, as gear costs have plumited, but so much harder than its ever been.
Thank you for the rundown, but I've been doing this since 1994, so I know how it works. I think Australian musicians are getting ripped off. I know it isn't easy running a venue, but lets be clear. I'm not talking about gigs involving national acts. I'm talking about regular run of the mill local shows, normally held at bars.
In America, at least in the area I'm from in Virginia, we don't pay the bar. The bar pays us. Any local band that lets a promoter get between them and the bar for a local show is already cutting into their profit margin to begin with. I always turn down promoters who want me to play a local only show. Why the hell do I need a promoter to put together a show at a bar where I know the owner, and I know all of the bands? Nope. That promoter better do his job and get some nationals into town. I sure as hell ain't letting a promoter hand me $100 for a packed show while he gives me a sob story about how he had to pay me out of pocket.
Also, lets be honest and acknowledge that compared to what they charge, venues are paying next to nothing for their alcohol. That is where they make their money, and it's more than double what they pay. Most bars measure a shot as 1 oz. You're looking at most places charging at least $5 a shot. A 750 mL bottle (normally around $30 if paying normal retail, which most bars are not) is about 25 shots. You're looking at $125 revenue on a $30 bottle of liquor.
Personally, if I'm negotiating my own show, I will take a percentage of the bar over the door any day. In fact, I'd prefer no cover, and a percentage of the door. That breaks down the first barrier right there. People are more likely to go to a show with no cover. Certainly, for a local show, I would never allow a $10 cover charge. I'd drop off the bill before I wasted my time.
But, getting back on topic, if a bar owner tells me they can't afford for someone to walk into their establishment without a cover, they are completely full of shit. No bar has ever gone under because they let too many people in for free. What they really need is as many people in the door as they can get, buying drinks and having a good time. Besides, you know what I do with venues like that? I hand my wife a cymbal stand and tell her to walk in.
But we don't know what was the deal, maybe they are getting payed, I don't think so, but the chance exists. And if it hasn't been talked previously, you can't expect anything from them.
I have fought countless times with my dad (yes, we play together) because he never asks for food, sure, I get paid and usually well, and most times we get the food, but there are the rare ocassions when we dont get the food, and we finish playing late, we are far from the city and we have to go to eat at 2am after arriving from wherever it is that we were playing instead of going to sleep. And it's not the place fault that they don't have food for us if we didn't ask for it, because there are no obligations from them, you can call it a courtesy, but then again, they are not forced to do it same as show producers are not responsible for giving away tickets for your gf, friends, family or whatever. You can talk with them prior to the gig and discuss every aspect of the business and if you don't get what you want you can quit.
As a band, that is a decision you have to make. It seems like your dad would rather get the higher payout rather than having them remove $100+ for the bar tab. It's cheaper to hit a Waffle House at 2 in the morning than to have a venue gouge you for food. If you aren't on tour, then your dad is probably being smart.
Love the new intro. Good work, Glenn
As for the caption:
And for my next trick, I'll do bad mic techniques hands-free
"Can't cup the mic if you don't use your hands."
I just can't get enough of these videos. They are funny as anything
It's 2018 Glenn.
Almost!
It's 2019 Glenn.
Glenn, I NEVER laugh at videos, because most just aren’t funny! THEN I watched this! LMAO the entire time! Great stuff!!!
hey glenn, i'm 15 and the lead singer and rhythm guitarist in a 4 piece band. We play classic rock/metal/prog covers, whatever we want to play basically along with working in some originals to our live shows. We're in between bass players and bass players are hard to come by in high school nowadays and since i play rhythm i'm always the "backup bass player" in our band. i'm more than glad to pick up the bass to support our band so we can keep gigging but i'm worried that i'm just gonna end up being the bass player even though i've poured lots of money in guitar already and i'd have to throw all of that away to be "the bass player." Should i just keep going with it and hope we miraculously find a bass player? Also i love your work and have learned lots from your videos. Cheers from Maryland!
i wanna hear how you play live or something you've recorded i love hearing small musicians
1. "Helicopter parents beware!
This is what happens when you encourage you child too much"
2. "Mommy, daddy, i bet you are proud of me now?"
3. "Cupping the mic 2.0"
4. "Dam roadies took my mic stand"
Keep up the good work Glenn! and i hope that one day we can see a tutorial about mixing a rock band
with a hammond/electric piano. Cheers!
Caption This:
"I've been married to the music for years. I know how he likes it."
Can I just write you a comment deliberately stuffed with typos and grammatical errors just so you pronounce it deliberately wrong? That shit is hilarious. Love the channel!
Hey Glenn love your videos. From 7:11 to 7:46 I laughed so hard I nearly pissed my pants from the stupidity that this bass player had.
I think your music is really catchy bro! especially "the eagle has landed" keep it up \m/
Hi Glenn
I saw you have finally put your price up on your 1 on 1 consults to a fair value (you were far too cheap before)
I can't afford that, and as I only have one question, I was hoping you would answer it for free
Last Tuesday I broke the last remaining string on my bass. Since then the band sounds the tightest it ever has.
I was going to replace some of them, but the guitarist said "don't worry, I've bought an octaver pedal"
What should I do ?
Congratulations Chris! You've just been replaced by an octaver pedal.
Here's what you can do:
1. Start using your bass as a boat oar.
2. Go to the nearest McDonald's in your local area, and fill-out a job application...I'll bet they'll be glad to have you.
Before I forget...
Female vocalist Caption: "STILL sounds better than the last TRAPT record."
I have to fill out a form ? With a pen ? that's a lot of work.
Use my bass as an ore ? I tried swimming with my bass gear once as I didn't understand the joke "What do for your bass guitarist if he is drowning ?....A _His Rig_ "
So I tried it, and it only made it worse. I guess they were trying to be offensive.
Anyway, they let me stand at the back and strum along. Its not as much fun, but its so much better now I don't have to practice as much
9:25 I used to live in Taylor, I remember often buying CDs at that Meijer myself, lol
Bearing in an SMG video?! WHAT?!
He's been in one before. If I recall, it was another Stupid Musician Texts.
For real? That was Bearing? The guy that got his ass handed to him by Vegan Gains? *eyesroll
i think you're mistaken, electrocist. he's the guy that handed vegan gains' ass to him, not the other way around.
The Electrocist Vegan Gains? Pfft. Good meme.
animegamingdude - ?..... you didn't read and watch the links on this thread did you?
That sad moment when you realized youve watched every episode of stupid musician texts and there arent any more to watch.
"Oh, phantom power. Thought you said golden shower, Greg."
Dude these are halarious, there needs to be more of these
Has an Australian read an text about Ticketmaster UK in an English accent.
Yeaaaah.
Great video still!
+istartedaband close enough :)
@@SpectreSoundStudios literally the opposite side of the world haha. you north americans and your geography crack me up. love ya glenn.
I was so waiting for this!!!!
The Caption:

The bass on your T-shirt is actually one of my favourite models of all time
About fucking time! Just what I needed after a long nights worth if severe depression! Thanks Glenn :D
+FoxWood no problem! Hope you're feeling better.
So does Glenn select-mock rock celebs according to their political affiliation? This channel is becoming increasingly political, which is a shame since Glenn is quite the expert on recording, and quite the clueless hack when it comes to political commentary or understanding even vaguely what's going on in Canada or the U.S., let alone the world. The poor thing has been so brainwashed by the Establishment and the media, he is one small step away from joining the rabid armies of butthurt SJWs roaming the streets. Or might he even join up with Antifa, and start smashing skulls?
Simmons and Mustaine are right-wing, and that's why he singles them out. Equal-opportunity-offender, ey? Not really. That's not his cup of tea. He fancies himself the Stephen Colbert of metal. He'd rather be biased, intolerant, hateful, all the things libtards supposedly fight against.
Caption - "Line 6 research and development in action!!! The most trusted name in guitar tone makes microphones too."
Caption for the pic: "Wait this is a band audition? Shit i thought this was a porn audition!"
love your videos. hope you saw my comment on your moon on the water video. love that video. it's amazing.
2016 Glen? is it not 2017?
Greig Williamson it's 2018 get your shit right my dude
This just keeps getting better and better to the new level! :D
Is he trolling? It's funny he says 2016 in the tittle and wearing a bass shirt
Zan30 tittle
dude I've seen random videos of yours for a couple of years and just recently started watching more of them...you fucking rock! best damn channel to watch!
here´s a story. i guess this is commun...i was playing, and meanwhile, a guy was getting too fancy with my girlfriend. and i tottally understand. but the next thing i see, is this douche bag slaming his hand on my girlfriends butt. my girl just slapped him. i called security over the mic. told the guy on the microphone...you should be glad i have my right wrist broken, or i´d take care of you. true story.
Great episode, tons of great humour and tips on what to avoid when trying to produce, or even listen to music.
I have another comment somewhere in this section...
Are you really recommending a Pick Up Artist book? Wow. Most ironically is even that you did this actually after destroying a loser who was at least up front in his sad intentions. Ofc recommending books treating women as objects you can get into your bed with a some tricks is way better.
If you can make yourself fall asleep with that to hide the fact that all your interactions with woman are fake and simulated while you could also start meaning full connections with women than sure.
Really did not expect The Game by Neil Strauss to be mentioned here haha that's awesome!
Pitch correcting is apparently 'replacing art', a large portion of the video advertising things and recommending The Game? Jesus christ.
Yes. Pitch correction is complete and total bullshit. Let's hear the singer. And was I actually recommending "the game?" read between the lines.
Captions for the picture: "Kids, look how you do to sing with your interior voice." Or maybe "Cupping the mic: the only way is all the way!"
So because Trapt are playing an Australian tour, you got an Australian to read a British person's rant about Ticketmaster UK? O-K.
Also might be time to let this series rest for a while, at least until you have some actual stupid texts.
Hahaha, typical bass player.
Ah man, I needed this , thanks for the FIX! Monthly Edition PLEASE!!!!!
Glenn I know you're hair might've fallen in the way of your eyes when you were typing the title for this video but the year is 2017. I know we all want to go back to 2016 when Trump being president was just a joke but we are all gonna have to deal with it
no you are hair Kappa
Nah, I don't want go back.
i love 2017 because of trump :) SO FUCK YOU.
Trump is what makes 2017 so great. Too bad for you
He's got nothing on Simmons, had to resort to very childish hand-gesture "mockery", because none of Gene's political detractors have anything substantial on him, so they resort to desperate tactics. As for Mustaine, Fricker needs to know that half of all the music nerd-boy listens to was written under the influence of illicit substances. Glen the manipulative Liberal-Establishment bot.
" when the gig is so bad your singer strips down, dresses like a tiger, shoves the mic so far down her throught that can can hear her breakfast, and tries to fly away"
OMG YES!!!!!!!!! Glenn you used the picture I sent you for a caption contest
There was a producer who was notorious for piecing together parts of a song. Believe it or not, he was a jazz producer. His name was Teo Macero. He would take the best parts of the solos from multiple takes of a tune and splice them together. Not sure he was the only one who did that either.
That ticketmaster text was perhaps the best piece of internet I've seen today.
Caption:
Audio engineer: "There's no worse way to hold the mic than cupping it."
Singer: "Hold my beer."
caption:
forget lyrics, gets nervous, eats mic
excuse: that's the sound I'm looking for!!!!!!
"The only way to truly feel the music and to get people to hear the strain in your voice is when you're inches away from eating it; you know you're doing good when you finish the song and you can't see the mic through the spit and saliva. The only way it could be closer to the heart is if you actually ate the microphone. (If you dare.)"
Hey, Glenn, I'm so hope you'll bring that "Bass Is Lif" shirt back to shop, I missed it but it's so great, I want one. Also, I don't see any shipping info in the shop page on your site (I've doublechecked but I'm blind sometimes). What is shipping fees for delivering to Bulgaria?
Glenn I don't know whether or not it's because I'm lying on my sofa half drunk while watching this but this is one of the funniest Stupid Musician text videos I've ever seen. Though I like to think of this series as "How Not To Go About Being A Musician, And How to Make Sure Everyone In Your Music Scene Fucking Hates You" lol. Seriously, keep up the good work man you're making the world of music a better place by holding the dickheads that appear in these videos to account. Thank you for teaching me how to not be one. Greetings from the UK
+guitar19971 thanks, Man!
I haven't been here in a while. Cool intro!
I had just seen a promo for Trapt coming down here to Australia after getting ticket prices for the Cavalera conspiracy, return to roots Australian tour! 😂 Cheer from Australia Glenn
Hi Glenn, love your contant, big fan!
I have a question though; why are your monitors incased? thinking about how soundwaves travels, wouldn't it distort or alter the sound traveling trough? Could it be a special kind of glas or maybe not regular glass at all? I just finnished 2 years of sound engineer education and I got really interested in that setup of yours.
Keep up the awesome work and cheers from Sweden!
\m/ Rock on! \m/
Love these episodes.
Caption: "A gag is usually an item or device designed to prevent speech, often as a restraint device to stop the subject from singing and keeps its wearer quiet, as seen in the image above."
That long run on sentence, the way it was executed had me dying. I couldn't breathe by the end of it
i like how glenn centered the camera on the, "bass is lif" tshirt rather than his face.
Distrokid is pretty awesome! I highly recommend them.!
That long sentence test was funny stuff, thanks for the laughs.
On a side note I'm looking at upgrading my art preamps. I was looking at the focusrite one isa, or something in that price range. Do you have any suggestions? I will be doing mostly vocals and electric guitars.
thanks
Hot Head Ted
just recently bought my maiden tickets and was charged 6 bucks per ticket on top of the 86 I was paying already they ironically enough call it a convenience fee. It wasnt that long ago you buy your tickets online and print them out with no fee whatsoever.
David Sadowski for the Legacy of the Beast tour?
Can't wait for the next one...
when you were reading that one around 10 minutes thats really long you sounded really like the goths from south park lmaoo nice video i like it
Hey Glenn, so the guys in my band and I want to get matching spectre sound media shirts. Is there any chance you'll get the "1 2 3 4 - this shirt is smarter than your drummer"-shirt back in the store? Greetings from Germany and keep up the cool work!
When you can't afford going to your own show, but end up there anyway.
Hee hee hee, love the video Glenn! Cheers!
I feel like heading to Trapt when they come here to Aus as I can manage to get myself a free ticket.... Will report back on how long it takes to fall asleep Glenn!
"Can't cup the mic if I use my hands! I'm really thankful that my bass player had this idea."
Who is the guy who did the voice for the Trapt comment? The snarky, jaded tone was perfection!
Hi Glenn, do you have any knowledge about the Washburn Taurus Series of basses? Specifically the 5 string variant. I'm in the market for a 400-500 dollar 5 string and that one looks interesting.
As a bass player who has watched your videos I am now smart enough to open a door, Thanks Glenn.
Man that intro is straight thundering. Remind me not to watch the playlist of this while I fall asleep.
"What? You said to stop cupping the mic, you said nothing about using it as a ball gag"
