I fucking love the messages about "I haven't changed my strings" or the weak gear shit. Like fuck off. I'm a 16 year old who worked about 20 hours a week this summer at a minimum wage-paying job ($7.25/hour) and I managed to get a Squier bass, Rumble 25 amp, a power chord and neck strap, countless lunch runs, and a used fender jazz bass. That all totaled up to almost $1000 and I still have around $400-$500. And I'm willing to buy new strings for my bass, I'm going to soon as my jazz bass is used and I don't know how long the old owner had it. Plus the strings on it are kinda trashy anyways even though the thing still sounds miles better than the Squier. But I managed to do this as a 16-year-old making $7.25 an hour and working around 20 hours a week. HOW CAN A YOUNG ADULT (20-25 years old) BE SO LAZY AS TO BRING IN A SQUIER WITH STRINGS FROM THE LAST ICE AGE WHEN I'VE DONE WHAT I'VE DONE AS A TEENAGER?!
FACTS DUDE. I need a metal bass tone so I always change the strings before recording or a major gig. And it's only about 40-60 bucks to get them put on so it's really not too, too hard
If I had a guitar that I wanted to give away, I wouldn't give it to a person who wants to break it. That's just fucking stupid, I never got the appeal of the instrument destruction. When I was a stupid teenager dreaming about being a "rockstar", I had an idea of making fun of it by putting a guitar together on stage quickly before a show or two.
Just wanted to say, anytime some dumbass on the internet comes at me with some bullshit, I always just read their text in your Bitchy Comment Voice. Makes things a lot easier.
I heard a mastering engineer who said that indie hip-hop he gets is often mixed in mono, by mistake. That and / or there is no bass, because they bring their neighborhood-shaking subwoofers in from their truck so it's bumping in the house. When you have that, you mix down the bass because all you hear is bass.
Oh my fucking god, don't smash your guitar if you cannot replace it. or even better : don't smash guitars. it stopped being cool even before guitars were invented.
Glen, thank you for being the voice in the back of every engineer's head. I think I may have one group of people, who rank lower than your bass players. My bad apples were RAPPERS. It's a whole other level of narcissism. I had to take these sessions in by necessity, as I was the financial backbone (the only engineer) for the commercial studio, I was working in. I am a music producer of different genres, grew up playing death metal, but moved into different stuff like acid rock and electronic stuff like Aphex Twin (NOT DANCE MUSIC) - so I didn't mind taking on a few vocal recordings. Real easy money. Up until I had dabs dripped into one of my day-old synthesizers, our studio raided by strangers to party all through the night, and didn't help clean up. The worst was the gun threats, received for criticizing a recording take. For some reason none of the other musicians in other genres acted this way. Didn't matter what color they were, the rappers came in and fucked shit up, on the regular.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE LINE "Middle class teenager suffering under the crushing weight of parental supervision". You Sir are Shakespeare for Metal Heads & People with something called a brain.
I've been a bass player for a long time. Even when I was a broke ass teenager I always loved the sound of new strings and tried to put fresh ones on every few months. Unless your playing Motown or something that requires a flat dull sound, I cannot for the life of me understand why bass players do not want to change strings or otherwise properly maintain their instrument. I love my bass and treat it like any other fine instrument, and always want to sound my best in public or on a recording.
It kind of went the other way for me, I started by playing metal so I always wanted a really present trebly sound, ended up playing jazz, and now I have a jazz bass that I have not changed strings on for 8 (EIGHT!) years, though they are flats so therе's that.
"I will not fix it in the mix"!!! Pure love :-) People expecting everything that seriously should get sorted out during pre-production (when applicable) and/or recording to get fixed in the mix should seriously get fixed themselves....
8:48 - I actually have to side with the musician. Open DAW Mute Drums Bus Enable Click Export/Bounce HOLY SHIT how much would I even offer you for doing that? Can I get an invoice for 5 minutes of work?
Thank you for the ride this far. It's been an experience. I'm also happy to see you are getting much better at pronouncing all that wierd spelling over time. ;-)
You think bass players who don't change their strings are bad? I've known guitar players who have never changed string before. I can't even comprehend the level of laziness required to never change strings. Even to the point of them getting corroded and rusty.
The guitarist in my band thinks it they sound better the rustier they get. We play in a punk band. I'm the bass player and have changed strings more times than he has....
I worked in a music store in the late 80's. I had 1 character who brought in his guitar from the 50's who wanted his 1st string change. Yeah I no longer work retail, never will again before we see satan skating to work.
Hi, Glenn. I'm wondering what your opinion of bass players who can't afford to change their strings is? I have been playing bass for (about) 4 years now but have never changed my strings due to the fact that I'm too poor and am in college. I get the whole "change it before you record" thing as it gives a much better tone for the track, but if I can't afford to rent studio time should I even be giving a shit about the flat tones I get on my bass that much or should I just focus on practising before I step into the industry? Hope you see this as it will help me immensely, thanks. (My bass was also a cheap as fuck knockoff for like £40)
you can take your strings off your bass and boil them in water to about 10-15 minutes. Then dry them thoroughly after they are done. Put them back on and they will sound more lively. This probably sounds like a troll, but seriously look it up.
in your case I don't really see the point if you are not recording, But if you are seriously that poor find a job. I went to college and worked a full time job it's doable.
look, i'm no glenn, but if you can't afford the strings, that's fine, on the other hand, if you are going to play at a gig or record something, you NEED to change your strings
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't know what make the strings are, if I had restringed my bass at least once with some Ernie Ball strings (or any other decent strings) I would feel a little safer doing this as they are better made and the risk of making the strings brittle is lower for good strings. But again, thanks for the suggestion.
DXP Reviews I am looking for a job, but not many employers will hire a 16 year with a bull ring (I got that done with money I got from helping a friend out, should have gotten new strings instead lmao)
8:45 Every time he hit the guitar against the wall or ground I cringed so hard. I'm 13 and I have a fuckin squier strat and Line 6 spider that i treat like newborn children(i know Line 6 sucks, i have a Boss DS-1 distortion but will upgrade to a Marshall soon for better clean tones). What's wrong with these kids...
My bass haven't had the strings changed since at least 1992, but that is mostly because it have been sitting in a closet for 13 years before I pulled it out, and I'm too lazy to go out and buy new strings.
Absolutely love these episodes. Plus, all the others are great too. Have always wanted to look behind the curtain, so to speak, and see what engineers do in the studio and its cool that I am learning more about it as well

Dude I never comment on a video on YT but these vids keep me laughing everytime. As a young music engineer and guitarist in a band I feel both of the pains. Keep up the good work greetz from the netherlands!!
I absolutely despise people who smash instruments and I usually lose all my respect for famous musicians who do this. My argument is simple. If, instead of smashing it, you took a sharpie and autographed that instrument and then auctioned it off you would be able to make a large sum of cash which you could then give to music schools and music teachers in your local city to help kids who are poor to learn music.

Oh my fucking god, don't smash your guitar if you cannot replace it. or even better : don't smash guitars. it stopped being cool even before guitars were invented.
That last text was so insane, I had to make a ringtone out of the jumbled mess of characters part just to see people's reactions. Brilliant.
Wow, that last one made my day.
When that dude smashed his guitar I could feel my heart break along with it.
Stop cruelty against tech now. It has feelings too.
This series keeps getting better each episode! Keep it up Glenn, Love from Italy!
"What is this thing?!" Too funny!
So is "Glenn fuck, *you're old!"*
James Jamerson supposedly never changed his strings.
Holy shit, that last one took the cake. Recipient stayed classy and gave really tactful replies IMO.
Do you record punk bands? If so, how has the experience been? Also have you ever had bands ask you to make their record sound like a record they like?
OldSchoolAddict reference records are very useful actually
KURT FIXED HIS GUITARS. He smashed them when he was broke and just fixed them. He even knew how to CHANGE STRINGS
God TJ with a full beard is terrifying
indeed :D
Yes, yes I am!
:D
"I will not fix it in the mix"!!! Pure love :-)
People expecting everything that seriously should get sorted out during pre-production (when applicable) and/or recording to get fixed in the mix should seriously get fixed themselves....
That last one has better vocals than most bands nowadays... xD
Been looking forward to the latest one of these for ages, these videos were how I originally came across your channel, great content, genuinely.
8:48 - I actually have to side with the musician.
Open DAW
Mute Drums Bus
Enable Click
Export/Bounce
HOLY SHIT how much would I even offer you for doing that? Can I get an invoice for 5 minutes of work?
P.D: Posting a link to this channel and saying "congrats ;)" it's cringey as fuck. It's the equivalent of saying "omg wait until my friends see this".
100% agreed.
Right? He also requested it very politely and asked reasonable questions. How can that be an example of a stupid musician?
Arin Shadows its his response afterwards. When Glenn said no the guy responded like an immature child.
David Germán Ballesteros Name one job that you do work and don't get paid for? Time is money? Where would you draw the line? 15 minutes? 20?
10/10 for Distrokid; we used that for the Gods of Hellfire album thanks to this channel.
That n.W.o wolfpac shirt! Didn't think you had any interest in wrestling, Glenn.
I bet you haven't seen a guitar player glue a string back together, thinking it would work...
bennymountain1 Elixirs are the best. I used to use them all the time, but I use Kalium now for custom gauge sets.
The guitarist in my band thinks it they sound better the rustier they get. We play in a punk band. I'm the bass player and have changed strings more times than he has....
I worked in a music store in the late 80's. I had 1 character who brought in his guitar from the 50's who wanted his 1st string change. Yeah I no longer work retail, never will again before we see satan skating to work.
can you clean strings? I'm a piano/trumpetist so I have no clue here
The last text exchange is gold. And makes me weep for the future.
DXP Reviews I am looking for a job, but not many employers will hire a 16 year with a bull ring (I got that done with money I got from helping a friend out, should have gotten new strings instead lmao)
the fact that you read these texts as written is killing me! LOL! a gift indeed
that last one had me laughing for 10 minutes straight!
That last one was fucking hilarious!
The way you read the posts of stupid people sounds even better than I imagine them to sound in my head.
Oh god I almost forgot rap exists. I wish I wasn't reminded :P
I don't even get why rap exists tbh. It's literally just a ghetto guy reading a poem about drugs and gangs.
You have a very loose definition of "poem", last I checked poetry is an art.
There is some rare rap that is enjoyable.
Radoslaw Dlugowski Yeah you are right I guess. Still just as bad either way.
Ok can't argue with Death Grips
I made the right choice to binge watch these videos
Meh... Kurt Cobain was also a master at suck-starting shotguns... poor choice of role models there...
Evilwhiteclownpunk Exactly. And what do you think of the last guy? All I can say is that was fucking gold!
Horns up people! One of our own needs us. Thoughts and prayers are with you Julie and of course Glenn!
my God I can't believe that hiphop guy was serious :O
My bass haven't had the strings changed since at least 1992, but that is mostly because it have been sitting in a closet for 13 years before I pulled it out, and I'm too lazy to go out and buy new strings.
TJ's beard is getting huge!
Absolutely love these episodes. Plus, all the others are great too. Have always wanted to look behind the curtain, so to speak, and see what engineers do in the studio and its cool that I am learning more about it as well
i know you have to make money but damn your channel has more advertisements than cbs.
The binge continues, video number 14. I must’ve been. I’ve already watched these videos, but I love watching them again and this is definitely my favorite one in this series. Anything to help the algorithm, I am willing to do my part.
Same. It’s amazing to see how far he’s come with his on screen persona. These look like bad Pawn Stars narrations compared to now. But they’re still magic.
@ yeah, and even though his persona is always you know screaming and what not, he really isn’t a bad guy, that is just his shtick . The reality is, he’s trying to help as many people as possible in different ways. I’m trying my best to do my part, even though I’m only one person to help him while he’s going through this personal matter in regards to his wife.
@@michaelhodilofficial that’s the way to look at it. Help out the guy who helps us. Hopefully enough of us do it to not only keep the channel even but improve it.
@ well said my friend, well said. And I have no doubt my mind that Glenn is grateful to every one of us who is trying our best to do our part. I know he doesn’t believe in religion and what not, but I am praying for his wife. I am religious, but I don’t go around being a jerk about it. At least I don’t think I do anyway. I hope and pray that Julie comes out of this stronger. Glenn, if you see this brother, please know that we are with you and Julie. Nothing but love for both of you.
@@michaelhodilofficial nothing wrong with that! Glad you are focusing on the good things. That’s what matters and I’m sure he does appreciate you.
that last one is fake. Some kid probably made it up to get on SMG.
Yeah, seemed pretty obvious fake to me.
+UndeadSon same
a lot of these submissions seemed really scripted/fictional
I mean I hope it is.
This is the highlight of my RUclips watching day.
Anyone got a link to the video playing in the corner during the Glenn's Children bit? That looks hilarious.
please ?
Greatest freakouts series. Look up youtube user Wafflepwn
Dude I never comment on a video on YT but these vids keep me laughing everytime. As a young music engineer and guitarist in a band I feel both of the pains. Keep up the good work greetz from the netherlands!!
Ok comparing this to the show now, you’ve come a long way bro. Keep it up!
I 'm addicted to this series. Anyone who has ever done studio work will love these.
ok... just finished the video. best channel on RUclips. don't stop. won't stop. can't stop.
I will buy things soon
awww yessss! I've been waiting for number 12!!!
last one was gold, wow but honestly i would be very curious to see what trap metal would sound like
I absolutely despise people who smash instruments and I usually lose all my respect for famous musicians who do this. My argument is simple. If, instead of smashing it, you took a sharpie and autographed that instrument and then auctioned it off you would be able to make a large sum of cash which you could then give to music schools and music teachers in your local city to help kids who are poor to learn music.
