Bok fan here. In my view I dont think rankings really matter especially the top 3 as its fairly even. I just find it funny when people say "but we are ranked number 1 so we must be the best team". These are the same people who say they dont care about rankings when their team isnt number 1. Unfortunately rugby has a lot of two faced rugby fans. Fact.

Yeah a lot of fans if their team are ranked 1 they are focused on the rankings but as soon as they slip they say they are irrelevant and pretend not to understand how they work lol

I checked the math method to calculate the ranking, it is very complicated and they really made an effort to make it fair, but in my opinion there is a discrepancy: the winning team gets some bonus decimal points for winning by 15 points or more but the losing team never gets anything even for losing by a single point, to be coherent it should be either eliminated the bonus for the wide margin or there should be some little consolation point for narrow defeats.

When does NZ play Ireland, that will be the decider for 2nd place on rankings unless the championship gives us an indication but I think the Irish would like to settle a score with NZ.
Rankings are fine - pretty accurately reflect the status of all the sides. Nice to see Italy doing better, and the Pacific Island sides mostly hanging in. Sorry to seeJapan on the slide, and wonder how much of it is Eddie's fault.
I played some sevens back in the day; it was fun, but it wasn't Rugby. Don't care at all about the Olympics 7's tournament, and wish the quality players 7's sucks away from full 15-a-side Rugby were back playing the real thing...
Springboks basically have to win all games against Argentina and Wallabies to stay in #1 spot, and at least get a draw against the All Blacks. Unless Argentina beat New Zealand in their first game. Then things get interesting.

6:07 I think there are 3 tiers at the top rather than the top 3 and the rest. SA IRE NZ then ENG FRA then SCO ARG ITA AUS. England and France (with their A team) are a cut above those other teams.

@@frigobar0173 The performances of England and France especially in the big events are a tier above those teams you mentioned. When it comes to beating or drawing the top 3 teams only England and France do it regularly.
Scotland, Australia, Italy vs SA NZ or IRE you are pretty sure what the result is going to be.
@@georgehornsby2075 mate Scotland beat england in the last 3 games the played, Australia is in the rebuilding phase but italy in the last year has played some wonderful rugby, the beat Scotland and destroyed wales, post by 3 to england and drew France, Scotland and Italy are not that far behind England and France, a little bit weaker? Maybe, but absolutely not a tier lower. The same weaker as England is weaker than France.
@@frigobar0173 I assume you are Scottish or Italian. A neutral can see a clear gap in past 5 years or so between Eng France and the next group of countries, the same way a neutral can see NZ SA and IRE are clearly ahead of England and France.
"Scotland beat England in the last 3 games they played". You can always look at isolated match-ups to find the conclusions you want. How have England compared to Scotland performed generally against top 3 teams, or even top 5 teams. Same with France and Italy.
"but absolutely not a tier lower". If England and France are a tier below the top 3 then Scotland, Australia, Italy etc are a tier below them. You could argue there are no tiers and the top 8-10 nations are all very close but if you are having tiers this makes the most sense.
Wales getting destroyed is sad for me but I'm not claiming they are on the same level as Scotland, Aus etc.
I think what you're saying is interesting but don't think France and England are enough behind the top 3 to make it a tier. Especially France can crush anyone on their day, they are just lacking a bit of consistency and they aren't the same without a fit Dupont. There is definitely a bit of a jump to the next group though. Yes, Scotland have the wood over England, but they always get up for England on a one-off, they are a bogey team for them. Meanwhile they have lost 10 in a row against Ireland and cannot buy a win against any of the other top teams, besides France occasionally.

What we can see with the rankings is
Ireland & SA are clearly the best
England & France are a bit behind but have potential to be in this category in future
NZL in the middle as they are still in transition but have shown enough to suggest they can be as good as Ireland & SA. I think we'll know which category to place NZL after the RC.

@@tasiletoa1037 As in not as good as SA/Ireland but better than England/France. Once we witness them in the rugby championship we'll know for sure are they in the SA/Ireland bracket and top class or if they are in the England/France category as in, still in transition.
We should not get too smug with ourselves in Ireland bud, I think 6 nations will be tight next year. I'd say we're slightly ahead of France, but dangerous to say because France are the kind of team that can roll in and put 30 on you just because they are in the mood. People say Scotland can "beat anyone on their day" but actually they can't. France are that team.

No Eddie Jones hate boils down to analysis. It's always "he's old and I don't like him". Even when he was very successful so many people wanted him fired because he is one of the few rugby coaches with a recognisable personality. Beyond parody.

Why are world rankings important, when we have a RWC every four years? Shouldn't RWC winners hold 1st place ranking (by default) for 4 years .. they've earned it, have they not? I'm not seeing why rankings are important.
It's just a measure to track which way teams have been trending I guess. It's only practically really used for RWC seedings, but I like seeing the battles for #1 like the recent SA/IRE series 😅

Winning a World Cup dosnt always mean your the best team on the planet over a period of time, however the Boks deserve their spot, when the Ferns won the World Cup England retained the number one ranking and so they should that’s the only game they had lost in like 2 years ( and havnt lost since ).
What good is winning a RWC if you can't back it up outside the tournament? A RWC only requires you to win a few games, whereas a #1 ranking requires you to keep winning every year.
Eddie Jones should just retire as he is a washed up coach and personality!! Always remember when he was caught on camera calling the Irish "Scummy"! Classy guy!

Arrogance is only somewhat entertaining when you can back it up, otherwise you start looking silly very quickly.
I think he's hilarious but the Australia business was pretty shitty and he has a huge mouth, if you talk the talk constantly you can't blame people for calling you out.
