The work that diaphragm is doing is amazing! What technique: Perfectly still shoulders... no throwing the arms up... no facial contortions trying to place notes... no throwing the head back. The diaphragm is working and everything else is relaxed. A masterclass technique lesson right there!

I adore all the singers I post in my channel, it is just that Callas is my No1... but I adore them all: Elisabeth, Montsy, Christa, dame Joan, Oralia, Astrid, Birgit, Beverly, Lucia, Arleen, June, Marina, Renee, Lisette...
The only Elisabetta I can really listen to. Sill's completely trumps her in the act 1 coloratura obviously, but Caballe was the only one with the middle voice and musicianship to do this role justice, without the full scope of range needed. I never understood why they never tried to make her look even a little bit like Elizabeth I though lol.
The only reason Sills attempted this role is because it is an Assoluta role that Callas had not sung... and I dont think Callas didnt sing Elisabetta because as someone had said she took one look at the score and said: Hell no!... but because this role completely lacks melody.. This cabaletta above (Amore ti guida) is the only inspired melodic moment of the entire opera and even Caballe's dreamy voice can not make the Entrance aria sound as a classic Donizetti super aria - even Stuarda's arias are better than this
Actually, even though vocally speaking Sills should never have done this role, dramatically I felt she handled herself very much like royalty. Just my own opinion.
For me the best Elisabetta is Leyla Gencer... Caballe is really amazing like in everything she does, but her overuse of pianissimos is really tiring and besides the fact that she doesn't look at all like Queen Elizabeth, I mean they could at least put her a wig 😂, doesn't work for me... Her Maria Estuarda is full of pianissimos everywhere too
I can't listen to Gencer in Bel Canto or in general because of her constant glottal stops that completely ruin her vocal line. Also her intonation was always too variable for me to take seriously.
I'm so surprised you like this.. The voice just disappears in lower middle, and don't even get me started on the lack of chest. The pianissimo is beautiful, but where's the musical/dramatic logic?
this is indeed on the borderline of my liking... I find Roberto Devereux one of Donizetti's worst operas... either no lady managed to sing it well or it is one of Donizetti's idiotic operas where because of lack of inspiration he made it an Assoluta role that tortures the singer (on the prototype of some Baroque composers who were writing most difficult passages without the least melody or musical value)... thus, I dont really require much drama or... or... Given the fact that Donizetti's reputation as a composer was literally DESTROYED by soprano coloraturas who transformed his operas into a circus of idiotic acrobatisms, I hold some reservation whether Devereux has just not be sung well by anybody (and sounds so less)... as for Caballe's middle, she possesed one of the most impressive and gorgeous middle voices in history... the fact that we dont care about her lack of C6, D6, E6 is the unbelievable quality of her middle voice

She looks so beautiful in this roll, not to mention her incredible in all ways voice! I think her acting as also great. She owns this role!
So beautiful! I just wonder how is it that some people gave this masterpiece thumbs down?
it is because although this is Divine, Montsy never had Elisabetta's Voice (actually none of the singers who have sung Elisabetta up to now had it)
Just unbelievable, amazing singing. RIP, dear one.
R.I.P. and thanks for your amazing vocal legacy!
There will never be another duet like this, ecstasy to my soul

Some commenter once said there are some people who should be eternally on this earth. Montserrat top of my list!
Sublime Montserrat Caballé !
I wish I knew of a soprano today who I adore much as both Caballe and Callas. Both were supreme Soprano Assoluta’s!

She was amazing! RIP.
voice of an angel..
Ah her legendary pianissimi ! Thanks
Rest in peace. My dear diva from heaven above.

Simplemente maravillosa..¡¡
One of my fav rendition of Roberto Devereux... Is that the one of 1977? (Vagabond from the prehistorical times of the Lifanovsky's forum)

She looks Imperial nevertheless
Probably because she was much more beautiful than Elizabeth!
Sills sang the role beautifully and acted the heck out of it. Her acting made the performance great. Caballe sings it beautifully.
Superba
Gràcies !
espléndida
Thank u so much for the video. Can u tell me which opera and which aria she was singing, please? :)
Donizetti. Roberto Devereux. Act 1: L’amor suo mi fe’ beata
Yes, beautiful pianissimo in this aria. I don't recognize it. Which opera is it from? Thanks!
The opera is Doniztti's Roberto Devereux
Hi, someone knows what year is this?
Splendida , dar prea manierista !
Que quieres que se quede como una estatua ?😂
I feel like the only singer who really knew how to act as a royal was Callas (Anna Bolena and Don Carlos especially).
Actually, even though vocally speaking Sills should never have done this role, dramatically I felt she handled herself very much like royalty. Just my own opinion.

Sometimes I find her pianissimi tiring too but most of the times they are like a Balm for the Soul
Lohengrin O that's quite true... Have you heard Leyla Gencers pianissimos?
I can't listen to Gencer in Bel Canto or in general because of her constant glottal stops that completely ruin her vocal line. Also her intonation was always too variable for me to take seriously.
