maybe the most thorough camp chair review on youtube. really appreciate starting off talking about what makes a camp chair objectively comfortable and not comfortable, then going thru each chairs pros cons.
I have used the Helinox chair zero for 2 years now. I use the ground mat, so chair don't sink into the ground. I weigh 256 pounds and am 64 years old, and can get up and down in it. I got 3 days of rain on last trip, so I did a lot of reading sitting in that chair. I was comfortable for up to 3 hours before having to get up.
Excellent review; wish I'd seen it sooner. Very comprehensive and concise, not overly detailed which is nice. Definitely worth subscribing to your channel! Thanks.
This video got us excited to try out backpacking and camping furniture. We now have a Big Agnes Skyline UL, and a Skyline stool, two Big Agnus Six Pack chairs (not reviewed here), a Nemo Moonlight, a Big Agnus Stool, and a Camp Time Roll-a-Chair (not reviewed here). Whew…! The Moonlight is still our favorite because it’s so cool looking and comfortable, it’s absolutely unique and wonderful. The Skyline UL is our go-to for hiking to a destination to read a book. It’s super light, easy to assemble, and comfortable enough to sit in for hours. The Big Agnus Six Packs are our luxury chairs we’ve hauled around overseas. They are big chairs that pack down small and light for what they are. Assembly and disassembly is easy. The Six Pack allowed us front row seats in some of the most beautiful places, as well as serving as the most comfortable place to hang out at the hostel. The BA Skyline stool was a bit of a disappointment. We had high hopes that this vapor light furniture would be our go-to backpack chair, but honestly, without a back rest it’s not all that relaxing to hang out in after a day on the trail. That said, it makes a great ottoman for the Skyline chair. Then there’s the Camp Time line of chairs, stools, tables, and cots. This is serious camp furniture. The design is super simple, and everything is made with quality materials and is light and well constructed. Their gear will last for decades as we can attest. All of the Roll-a-stuff is amazing! Camp Time has been around forever, but it’s the best brand you’ve never heard of in camp gear- they don’t advertise.
Great review - Thanks. I appreciate being able to see them all side-by-side. I have the Mica basin, and while I haven't tried many others, I really appreciate how much easier it is to get in and out of compared to the old Crazy-Creek style. I wouldn't carry a chair hiking, but for paddling trips they are worth the weight in my opinion, and a little extra weight for a better build quality is also a tradeoff that works for me. Thanks again.
You needed to include the Helinox Chair Zero Highback, the only chair under 2 pounds that I (5'9", 180) can slide down a little in and rest the back of my head. The only chair that I can snooze in!
I went with the REI flex light air. It was an ounce lighter and $40 cheaper. Plus it came in different colors lol. Definitely a luxury backpacking piece of equipment.
@@ckgonzales6743 I got my Flexlite Air on sale too. I got it mostly for day hiking in the Sierra so when I'm at my halfway point and want to rest, eat snacks and enjoy the scenery I can relax. I just got back from my trip and was very happy with the chair, it served it's intended purpose perfectly. I will probably also take it on shorter backpacking trips, one or two nighters.
One of the biggest challenges I've experienced with these types of chairs is the assembly/disassembly. Some make it feel like you need 3 hands to do it properly. Any thoughts on which chair(s) was/were easier to assemble/disassemble? Thanks for putting this video out, as well!
Thanks Tanner! I didn't think any of these were that difficult to set up, but the Alps was probably the hardest. The Big Agnes all had grooved tubes, so they only went together one way while all the others slid together a little easier. All of them are all bungee corded together though, which made setting them up really easy. Thanks for watching!
Attach the seat cloth to the shorter legs (front) first, then put on one of the back corners, and finally, rest the front corner against your chest and pull the final leg in with one hand and slip the seat cloth over with the other hand. This makes it relatively easy to set up any of them.
Hey Matt, I have the Helinox cot and let me tell you, it is well worth the money. I had a cheaper backpacking cot that I used and it did great but I upgraded to the Helinox and the quality is far superior. And in some good cold weather throw your pad on top of the cot, literally the best sleep ive ever had in the woods.
Hey Matt! Yeah, I agree....I didn't care for the ones that lean back a lot as I didn't find them as comfortable. The Nemo was definitely one of the most comfortable options to me! Thanks for watching!
Great review. It would be helpful if you ordered the chairs by price, highest to lowest and your choice highest to lowest. Overall, very helpful info. Thanks.🌿
@Hope Springs-A-Turtle absolutely! If interested, here is our article on those chairs...a bit more detail on the article. backwoodspursuit.com/best-ultralight-backpacking-chairs/
Great review! I know this is a bit different... but if you were to use one of these for outdoor writing (go to location, setup with a short table in front of you, write storries, books etc). Which would you choose with that in mind? Comfort, and forward position priorities. Thanks!
@illinoisvalleymusicians hey there! For that, I'd probably go with the Big Agnes Mica Basin. It's the most comfortable of the group IMO. Thanks for watching!
Well. I wish I saw this ahead of time. I just bought a Nemo Moonlite, sitting on it in my living room watching this video, waiting for that part of the review, hope it's positive 😂 Edit: It was positive! Anyone here reading use these for biking or you all use for hiking?
@@BackwoodsPursuit thank you! I'll be watching more for sure! I'm just getting into this kinda lifestyle. So I'm at the point where I want certain gear to make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable but I don't want to just load up with unnecessary weight/expenses. Took a bike ride and sat by a river that I really wanted a chair for, bought some bike accessories that I like. (The cup holder may have been a waste of money😂)
I’d have liked the chairs to have had their packs at the front for comparison with each other…! For Cycle tourers/bike packers packing size is definitely important. Great review of chairs though - Big Agnes Skylight UL seems to be leading in other online reviews so very good to see other products as the BA is £££$$$
Thank you for a great comparison. Between the Mica Basin and Nemo Monnlite, which one has the edge in comfort, and in ease of putting together and taking apart? Thanks!
Thanks, Sam! Glad it was helpful! I'd say they are pretty similar in ease of setup. As for comfort, I thought the Mica Basin was a little more comfortable, hut it doesn't recline like the Nemo Moonlight, so if that's important to you, go with the Moonlight, if not, the Mica Basin has the edge for me. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I don't need think I would use the recline on the Nemo since it's not a high back, and the Big Agnes seems comfortable enough, not very upright which is great. Just wondering with me being 5' 10" weighing 180 lbs would the Mica Basin be more comfortable for me than the Skyline UL and worth the extra 1/2 lb of weight?
@@samb9542 you bet! If you plan to pack it while backpacking, ID definitely go.with the Skyline over the Mica Basin. The Skyline is still very comfortable (I'm also 5'10" 185).
I had the yizi lite and it was nice and comfortable although it did sit low to the ground and fairly reclined. The deal breaker was that the material was extremely thin and tore when I simply shifted my weight. Only used it a few times before it failed. Amazon reviews show that others had the same problems
got the moonlite. spoiled myself for my first chair. was interested in the skyline ul and helinox zero. moonlite had more features despite not being the lightest. zero looks too cheap and low quality for the price. skyline packed too long but the cleanest looking out of the 3. moonlite looks great too has that road bike sporty aesthetic w the tubes/hubs.
