  • Today Luke is reviewing a UL stool from Big Agnes;
while Lightweight and Comfortable, is that enough to justify the price?

    Big Agnes Skyline UL Stool

What it is : For those who want to pack light but yet carry with them a comfortable place to sit, this is a fairly lightweight sitting option for those who don’t want to carry with them a full size chair.

    Colors : Black Orange Yellow
Materials : Nylon with polyester ripstop and waterproof UTS coating - aluminum pole system
Weight : 1lb 4.5oz for the full kit - you can drop .5oz by leaving the storage bag behind.
    Measurements :
    Seat Height : 15"
    Seat Width : 21”
    Packed Size : 3.5 x 12"
    Weight Capacity : 250lbs
    Price : $100
    Features :
    Hubless design
Color coded frame for easy setup
For a stool, the seat is rather wide which isn’t common with camp stools. Most are very narrow.
    One directional way to sit
    Review Pros :
Comfortable - Really comfortable considering that there isn’t a back rest. When sitting in it, it’s like a chair but again, without the back.
Because the seat is large it doesn’t feel restrictive and doesn’t impact your legs or hips.
    Lightweight
    Small form factor
    Easy to set up
Can be used for multiple purposes including backpacking, bike packing, kayaking and so on.
    Durable
Can be used as a makeshift table if needed
Fairly stable for a stool - if you lean forward to grab something it stays planted fairly well. This is due to slight flexes in the frame and stretching being done in the seat.
Storage bag is big enough to house the stool and seat with no issues.
    Review Cons :
Point 1 - Can’t recline - that’s not really a con just a point to make and for you to consider.
Point 2 - feet will sink into soft soil
My only real con for this stool is the price - $100 for a stool with these materials is borderline insanity.
There are a number of lightweight stools out there with most of them being $60 to $70 less expensive.
Yes, they will be made with less expensive materials, they will feature different diving’s, won’t be quite as comfortable and won’t include a warranty that you can trust as most of these offerings will come from Chinese companies. That’s up to you to weigh and consider.
Tip : If you are a taller or larger individual, I would recommend trying this stool out before purchasing if at all possible.

I bought this stool last December and have used it all spring and summer. It's the most comfortable backpacking chair I've used. What impressed me the most is how sturdy it is. Much more stable than the Chair Zero. Also the seat is wider so I don't get the pinching effect. I went backpacking on the AT last January with this chair and used a tree as a backrest. Super comfortable. I was lucky and found it on sale for $59.00. Well worth the cost. At close to 60 years old I really appreciate a comfortable chair.

I have this stool and absolutely love it. Have had it for over a year now. I bought it on sale at REI for about $20 cheaper than what you have indicated. They only problem I have had is how to patch a hole created by a pop of hot embers from a fire pit. Melted a hole in the seat before I could knock the ember away. Need to get a patch. I still use it though-it has not torn. Also, excellent for day hikes. I’ve not done any multi-day with it but will do so in the future. It is very comfortable and what a nice relief at the end of the day to have a comfy chair! As you mentioned, there are several ways to prevent the feet from sinking into softer ground. And this is something you would have to figure out for many chairs like these on the market. Not a flaw in my book.

I have had one for a while and love everything about it. I use it for plein air watercolor painting and drawing. You’re close to the ground so you can set some of your equipment on the ground and reach it easily. You can balance the sketchbook with your paints (clipped on) on your lap. Alternatively, you can use with your sketchbook attached to a short tripod.

At 60, I really look forward to leaning back when relaxing. Big Agnes is a solid brand but I'd rather carry the extra weight for the extra comfort but that's just me. Great video, btw.

      @GetUpTheMountains Год назад +1

I'm not 60 yet, but I'm older to the point that bringing a chair & stool are worth it to me. I bring both because they serve different purposes. The chair with the back is for relaxing, leaning back, really getting into it. The stool is for when there are camp chores to be done, and I want to sit but I need to be more active than plopping way down low into a Chair Zero. Getting back up from those lowriders is a pain, which is where the stool comes into play. When I need to get up and sit down repeatedly before max relax mode, I'm using a stool. Unfortunately, this stool seems relatively low to the ground.

I have the BA Skyline Chair, which is the same design as this stool with a back added. It is very comfortable. I upgraded to it from a Helinox Chair Zero and am very happy to carry the extra few ounces to have better comfort. This chair sits about twice as high as the Helinox, making it much easier to get into and out of.

I have one and it was a bit pricey but worth it for a comfortable seat at a height I can get in and out of. My only gripe is the narrow-mouthed little storage bag that is an absolute fight to get the thing back into when youre moving on. Paul Messner in the UK suggests the use of practice golf balls, holed and stuck on the feet to stop them sinking in.

I have purchased two chairs that use this pole and sleeve design including one Tigres. If you use these several times a week the poles will punch through the fabric eventually. I only weight 160. I have made repairs that lasted about as long as the factory fabric lasted. Unless they beef up the fabric around the poles its good for use a few times a year. Use it every day it will last about 3-4 months.

I've been using this stool for about two years now. I love it! I originally bought it because I wanted a chair that was higher off the ground than the traditional backpacking chairs. After my first trip with it I fell in love. I take it on all of my multi-day trips now and it has been extremely durable and comfortable. I'm a bigger guy, I fluctuate between 245-255lbs, and this stool has always felt sturdy underneath me. Never once have I felt like it was going to give out or tip. I keep it in my car when I'm not hiking and it has come in handy for all sorts of purposes. My kids love to use it instead of the bag chairs when we go to their tournaments and other sporting events. It is pricey, but it's worth it in my opinion. If you can find one on sale it's a no brainer.

I've just received it (70 euros shipped, France).
It weighs a few grams more than the Helinox Zero and it feels different already. It can finally sit upright and do stuff like using binos or cooking. Whereas the Helinox Zero felt springy, wobbly and you had to recline, move those legs forward and find that point where it finally becomes stable and not move from there on.
With this B.A. skyline stool I don't have to find that point of equilibrium and sitting upright (with the intention of doing stuff) feels more natural. Also I don't feel any compression from the sides either, perfect for my large body.
I'll have compare them when I'm knackered after a long walk, maybe the reclining posture of the helinox zero is more relaxing than having to sit upright.
So for almost half the price (a helinox zero can cost 110-130 euros in France) it's a great deal.

There used to be a time when the weight limit advertised on any item was under the actual tested weight limit. One reason was to protect the item user and the other reason was to help protect the company from a mass of liability issues. Today we can figure that the weight limit is not much more than the listed limit. Items are engineered to use the most minimum amounts of materials to meet a goal. Look at the early railroad bridges that have been standing for 100 plus years and still in excellent condition while much the much more modern engineered bridges have a lifespan of only 30 years without needing much care and preservation and maintenance. They were built that way to save a ton of upfront costs. I'll trust my butt to a more substantial four legger seat.

You could buy an REI Flexlite right now for less money, 6 more ounces, and the ability to sit back in it, which is really incredible after lugging around a 25lb backpack all day. This stool would need to be half the price and/or lighter to consider purchase.

Give me a less rigid version of this to drop the weight to… 12oz… and I might consider, but I’ve no reason when this is slightly heavier than a Chair Zero or Flexlite Air. The pack size is great, even easier to bring, but not to carry generally less comfort.
Is comfortable, is well built, the split cross pole to stabilize on uneven ground is ground, and every element was thought out, but this is one where there are simply better options for much the same purpose for a luxury item on trail.

Things cost what they cost. The global economy has changed and prices have gone up. I've accepted the increases. Needs and wants are up to the person. There are plenty of camping items that I've placed a C-note on and I rarely use them. What I will say is that I've managed to integrate some of my backpacking items into work, be it for cooking lunch or finding a quiet place to sit during a break. This I could use all of the time between work and camping and feel justified in the cost.

I want to like this stool; I have a BA tent which I really love & they make great products. However, my current backpacking stool's seat is 18" off the ground whereas the BA one is only 15". I can see from even when you sit in it, your thighs are not parallel to the ground. Your knees are bent at

lol You can use it as a survival rainwater catcher or a sling for a broken arm but its uses are endless really with a bit of imagination, my wife could wear it to the races as a hat! now that would really be multi-purpose :)
