I was a taxi driver with Taxis Combined in Sydney when this was recorded, I can remember seeing the filming of this song. This became my theme song when I drove. Whenever this was played on the radio 2MMM I played it loud. The song motivated me whenever I was feeling like giving it all away. Thank you Paul.
I remember my Dad playing this song and others like it when I was a kid. He was not a good person. Alcohol was his vice, and it made him into a monster. He died last year, and I listen to this song among others as a form of therapy for myself. A part of me hurts and grieves, but life moves on.
This song reminds me of Aus back in the day! The road trips, cheap living, hanging out with a beer and just laid back fun. Times have changed now! This song keeps those good 'ol days alive!
Transported back in time........The streets of Darlinghurst , Kings Cross and Centennial Park, Sydney Airport and Bondi Beach in the 80's..... Fond memories indeed ............ It looks nothing like it looked back then.... Some Great times............ One of my favorite songs from that era........ How I miss those times with sweet Christine......... 🖤🖤🖤....... Absolute Magic !!!!!
Connolly was a player in the vein of Knopfler and Gilmour. The melody is your friend. Weave around it a bit, and use great tone to sing for you. That's how you tug people's heartstrings. He was brilliant, and sadly missed.
Paul came to Vancouver by himself and I went to see him with two Aussie sisters and a friend...around 1993? It was a small venue and he held us all in the palm of his hand. This song was the only one I was familiar with. The version he gave us that night was magical. I still love it dearly.
Paul Kelly’s little brother was the general manager of John Oxley detention centre when I was an inmate as a child over 30yrs ago. They are the splitting image of each other
The passing of Michael Gudinsky today bought me here 🌹 a great loss to the Australian music industry 🇦🇺 with songs and Aussie bands like this .......he will be missed by all Aussies , bands and artists 🇦🇺
1986 was a beautiful year! In case no one has mentioned this, it's Jenny Morris that sings in the background. Haven't seen this for ages! The red car is a Ford XE Falcon Taxi.
When we moved to the US from Oz one of the last things I did was buy a Paul Kelly CD to take with me as it is the one of the real sounds of Australia for me.
This came out not long after I arrived here, and to me it (and a lot of other music at the time) summed up Australia. What a great place it was back in the mid 80s. I couldn’t believe my luck. Songs like this take me straight back to those days….
Here's one for ya. I first saw Paul Kelly at the Royal Antler in 1983, a little while after Manila came out, and I'd purchased it. I was the only bloke in the pub who'd come to watch Paul Kelly. They were playing pool right in front of the stage and ignoring him.
Amazing song... My very first concert was Paul Kelly opening up for The Smithereens at a hall on the Notre Dame campus.... I wish I could go back and see it again. This song has a place on my Top 20 of all time...
I didn;t realise that was shot in Sydney until I saw the shot heading into Kings Cross at the end. I'm on the road in Sydney pretty much every day, and I didn't recognize any of that, it's all changed so much.
I love this song...and I love the music video. It makes me feel nostalgic when I recognise parts of Sydney, and the ol’ Taxis Combined taxis with their (original) phone number! 😎😻
A gorgeous tune. This was my 1st intro 2 his music. It was also the reason why I've stayed faithful 2 his music. Now, whenever I hear it, I have this natural impulse 2 cry... why? It is the perfect match between music & lyrics than either of those elements on their own. Like fellow 80s veteran Neil Finn (another enduring favorite), Paul Kelly is a born storyteller . He knows just how 2 paint a soundscape that beautifully depicts love, loss, & longing against a uniquely Australian sky.
Yes. I saw him here in Massachusetts's years back. Another good one, from little things big things grow. How to make Gravy. The troubadour of down under. Greetings from the US!!
The 80's is where I have so many fond memories from first love to first heartbreak and i had the best music music to carry me through it all, and what better country to do it all in other than Australia. We had the best music that is still played everywhere today.
First heard this on Radio Australia this morning, and have had the video on repeat since finding it on YT. Love it, love, it, love it. The RA announcer said Mr K is 57 today. Happy birthday, Paul.
Yes. We never had red taxis here in Melbourne in the 80s, most of them were white because they were purchased 2nd hand and white was easy to keep clean and fix (no mis-matched colours). Sydney always liked red for some reason.
I was 9 when this came out and l mainly remember seeing the film Malcom that year. The memories that the film and this music vid brings back. My late dad use to be a pump fitter who traveled all over Melbourne to service pumps and he would take me on a lot of call outs and would remember a lot of landmarks that are in these two films. Also another great film called The Big Steal (1989)
Haven't seen this for ages! The red car is a Ford XE Falcon Taxi. Haven't seen this for ages! The red car is a Ford XE Falcon Taxi. 1986 was a beautiful year!

Oh how I miss my country back then. It's unrecognisable now. At least Paul's tunes take us back in our minds and souls. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
I'm still having quite a few beers while listening to this video 🍺🍺🍺🇭🇲🇭🇲🇭🇲👍👍🍻🍻

Steve Connolly's guitar was such a significant sound on so many of Paul's recordings from this time.
So good, and great tone. One of the only solo's i learnt and play for fun, along with to her door and i just play rhythm and sing

Pure, unadulterated Aussie rock. Thanks for all your brilliant work Paul, love it.
Ahhh, the 80s. What a great time to be alive. Still think it was the best decade for music. Great songs like this just take me back.

Where did we go wrong Oz, where the bloody hell did we go wrong....what a simpler fantastic time.
saw PK & Coloured Girls ... Perth 87 ... loved them then and just found them again ... ah the memories ... total class
Great song, and the film clip is a great 1986 time capsule. No doubt the passengers came from Paul’s own taxi-driving experiences.
Every dog will have its day. Any dog can win ......... a life lesson there people. Always believe in yourself.
It's about a stalker.
You know it's in the 80's, having a smoke in the back of the cab. Long life the good old days of the 80's, best era EVER!
Gossip was a great album. Paul Kelly was one reason I left Brisvegas for Melbourne , all those years ago
makes you wanna cry how things have changed for the worse. we will never ever get that back.

What a brilliantly made video clip. It tells a day in the lif story and Pauls's acting is subtle. and then there's the magic song.
The taxi that pulls over before its even being hailed. Classic!
I love the back vocal.

One of the best`s from LP "GOSSIP"!!
Saw Paul Kelly at Big Day Out, smoked a doob, sat in the grass and relaxed to one of our greatest musicians
Great taxi driver, he signals to pull over before she has even hailed him.
