When I was in Australia in the 80s, I got to know Paul Kelly's music and was hooked.
I bought the Gossip double album and took it home.
In Germany, nobody knew Paul Kelly, but all my friends were enthusiastic and I had to copy Gossip onto cassettes for them.
Paul Kelly's music has never gone out of my focus, so I have records from all eras now. I like to play his songs myself at home with guitar and harmonica.
It's strange that Paul Kelly is still not better known outside Australia because he (and his band) is a great artist!

Only found Paul Kelly recently. I was in a club in Dandenong , and the singer was playing this, so when I came back home to Scotland, I searchd youtube for him. His songs are amazing. so much so, i've played nothing else on guitar but them. Love Australia and the people. Can't wait to go back next year.

Mate he’s an Aussie icon, another music legend that the rest of the world misses out on because he doesn’t come from America or England. Being Aussie we get the best of the great bands from overseas and the best Aussie bands and songwriters like Paul Kelly , Cold Chisel, Powder Finger and The Screaming Jets. In Australia we get the best choice of music because we aren’t bias about where you come from as long as you have a great passion and drive for the music that you play.

I went to the UK with my best mate In the eighties, I met his best friends who were all a generation on from me. They grew up seeing the likes of the stones and Elton john the stones etc in pubs. My mates best friend came to Australia staying at my place. He said to me we have the best music in abundance anywhere in the world.

I like but do not totally agree. We have many as good as Bob Dylan (maybe not as prolific as Bob) in this country. Paul Kelly, Don Walker, Pigram Bros, Bruce Woodley, John Williamson etc etc. Wonderful Poets and Musicians.
I vote this as the most Aussie song out there. 'I was Only 19' a close second and 'A Pub with no beer' at 3 but not in that particular order officially. The reason as it describes the Aussie family struggle and just a classic story that has happened to most of us , really stirs up the juices.... gets me every time. :)

Paul has a whole catalogue that could get that vote. There are lots from other artists as well "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", "Khe Sanh", "Flame Trees".

Saw him twice in Oz in 1988. Little VFW venues in little Oz towns. They shared the bill with Hunters and Gatherers. Stone cold amazing shows. Nice memories.

Many would say that Australia HAS produced a Bob Dylan, indeed two or three times over. Look at the works of Kevin Johnson from the 70's and there's no better storytellers of Australia than Slim Dusty or John Williamson
